Coming Attractions: Little Big Planet (PS3), Fallout 3
Posted by Drew Robbins on 10.25.2008

Last time…on Coming Attractions – *Cue Dragonball Z Announcer* Drew Robbins thought he knew everything about the week going into his column writing, but as he prepared to hand over the award to Little Big Planet, his plan was derailed by an offended group of Muslims. The Muslims forced Sony to push back Little Big Planet for an extra week, and Drew was forced to give his award away to Fable II as his wait for Little Big Planet was extended. But now with a new challenger – Fallout 3 – on the horizon, can Little Big Planet win the #1 Pick of the Week? Or will Fallout 3 come out of nowhere and take the gold? And will Drew Robbins ever stop playing the latest Madden? Find out this week on another exciting episode of Coming Attractions!

- To answer my final question, as to whether or not I have quit playing Madden, no…I have not. Do you really want to hear me ramble on about how I lost the Super Bowl in my second season, but in my third season I've started out 7-1 with the highest rated offense in the league? Probably not.

- Something awesome happened last Sunday, and it involved a certain team from St. Louis. No, it isn't the Blues, I'm talking about the Rams! That makes two wins in a row…I swear, if they can beat the Patriots this weekend, I will probably shed tears...

Photobucket

- …dino tears. In case you couldn't tell, this is a picture from Mother 3 (but the cancelled N64 version.) I haven't played as much as I had planned, probably because I know the whole story, but nonetheless, awesome game is awesome.

- There is a lot of talk about how Little Big Planet will end up at the center of controversy for its User-Created content, and in all likelihood, it will…because of a few morons who decided it would be funny to make the Twin Towers, or make Sackboy shoot up his school. I have no doubts about either of these being created, because I know that such morons do exist, and those morons enjoy spoiling the image of a game that would be otherwise adored.

Coming Attractions – Week 16

Well, this week is big. Not only is Little Big Planet coming out, some people's most anticipated game, Fallout 3, is coming out as well. Oh yeah, and a little game called Guitar Hero. I hope you don't care about that game; I like to think my readers have a decent IQ and are playing the superior Rock Band 2.

Motorstorm: Pacific Rift (PS3) - What better way to start out this week than with a game I don't know much about, other than the fact that the original was about racing in the desert. Sounds…decent. That isn't my latest attempt at sarcasm; I actually do enjoy games of the racing variety. Usually those games take place in a futuristic car or a go-kart, but what the heck, monster trucks/ATVs/ are awesome. How could you go wrong with monster trucks (lets ignore that WCW game.)?

The newer Motorstorm clearly offers a pacific setting, which means you can expect forests, gang violence, and beaches. From the brief video available on the EB games website, the stages look beautiful. Forest/jungle settings are always a win in my book, and these look to be no different. All in all, the game features 16 new courses, which seems a little small…but then again, F-Zero GX had about…I think the same amount. Let us all remember how that game was, and if your memory is anything other than ‘awesome,' then you are owed one (1) punch in the face.

Apparently, the aforementioned monster trucks are a new feature to this game, and these trucks can roll over anything in their paths. I imagine these must be slower to make up for the obvious advantage, we need balance in our racing games! Nerf those darn motorcycles while you're at it, Sony, their "Cruise Control" ability only has a 5 second cool-down…come on!

My Opinion: Thumbs Up - A fun racing game that doesn't take place in A.) the future, B.) a go-kart, or C.) Paradise. So if you are tired of either of those three, this is for you!

- Oh shi-

Guitar Hero: World Tour - Guitar Hero has made many appearances in my column before, and each time I lambaste it by saying vile things. My problem with Guitar Hero goes back to last year, which as you may know, was the debut year of Activision's ultimate takeover of Guitar Hero, and eventually, a takeover of the entire industry. The year started up with a "new" Guitar Hero called Rock the 80's, a game that featured all of your favorite 80's tracks (if you have no good taste in music.). Nobody really took kindly to the game and it ushered in an era of bad feeling towards the new masters of Guitar Hero. Later on in the year, Rock Band and the new Guitar Hero both launched, and while one of them was an instant classic, the other was just Guitar Hero. Nothing new, nothing special, nothing good. Every song seemed to be a mixed jumble of notes that failed to play in rhythm with the music, which was clearly a side-effect of losing Harmonix.

Now, in the year of our lord, 2008, Guitar Hero: World Tour is coming out and taking a few hundred pages from the book of Rock Band. Instead of just strumming to lousy Metallica songs, you now drum, sing, and strum to the lousy Metallica songs! Wow, it is like I'm really playing Rock Band. Of course, the game has to have its own feature to have any semblance of legitimacy, and that mode is music creator. You can create anything you want, and upload it onto the internet as long as it isn't a licensed song. This seems like the perfect opportunity to get remixes of NES classics, but do you really see the frat boy crowd sitting around their TV creating Super Mario?

My Opinion: Thumbs Down - Just think about it for a second. Rock Band 2 is awesome and it costs about $190, Guitar Hero: World Tour is a Rock Band rip-off (I'm just waiting for someone to say that Guitar Hero created guitar games…JUST WAITING), it features random note patterns, and costs the same amount. Guitar Hero is now down to 0 advantages over Rock Band, so just keep that in mind.

Photobucket
- I-i-I, wanna Rock and Roll all ni-i-ight, and play Rock Band 2 instead!

Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 (PC) - While I do enjoy the RTS genre, I've never actually played a Command and Conquer game. Blasphemy, I know, but I am but a man, a mere pile of flesh and bones (have at you!). Most of my RTS experience is with Starcraft, Age of Empires, Rise of Nations, Warcraft III…I think you get the picture. So it is plainly obvious that I am afraid to try anything outside of the Blizzard-Ensemble axis of evil. Many RTS fans have tried to sell me on this series, claiming it to be the finest example of the genre, so let us take a look at this third Red Alert game.

Red Alert is about the Russians, who I am sure are fighting for the great pride of "Mother Russia." Well, that alone pretty much convinces me, I can't remember a single game about Russians that I didn't love. Metal Gear Solid 3, Grand Theft Auto IV…uh…Russian Wars: Revenge of Mother Russia?

Outside of Russians, and confusingly live action cutscenes, I don't see much else to say about this game. Without Starcraft II, and with the latest Civilization already released, this looks like the year's last big strategy game.

My Opinion: Thumbs Up - I hope these cutscenes are as bad as Resident Evil's *crosses fingers.*

Photobucket

Fallout 3 (PC/360/PS3) - There are few things that I can honestly say I enjoy about Fallout. I think the story is amusing, but in the past, I thought the gameplay was boring, and I'm not really sure that this will change my mind. Yes, it is now a real-time game, but the combat is largely based on Oblivion…causing many to deem Fallout 3 "Oblivion with Guns." Let it be known that I really dislike Oblivion, to the point where I'm surprised that anyone finds it enjoyable. It takes place in a boring fantasy environment, with the typical collection of knights, warriors, thieves, etc. You can look at your armor, but the most effective way of battle forces you to use the first-person view. Everything about Oblivion bored me, so will Fallout 3 be any different? Probably not. However, this game isn't targeted towards me. It is just targeted to every sane person in the world.

I'm not going to run down the features of Fallout 3, because I can rest assured that most of you already want to buy it, so anything I say wouldn't bolster your desire for the game. Instead, I'll talk about how well it is going to get reviewed.

This game will receive 10 out of 10s from the majority of media outlets. And why not? The 10 has lost all meaning, with both Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4 taking that award. Those games were great…but 10? My stance on the 10 is that a game should never get it. The argument against this is that "It doesn't mean perfect." Sure, maybe you don't mean it that way, but that is the literal meaning of it. What is 100%? Perfect. 10/10 = 1, which equals 1.00, which ends up as 100%. To say that it doesn't mean perfect is silly, but most reviewers tend to swear by the fact that it "doesn't." MGS 4 isn't perfect, huh? So maybe it should get a 9.6? GTA IV apparently wasn't perfect, so what is wrong with a 9.7? It may not look as snazzy, but it gives a clearer meaning of the review. How many people were let down by GTA IV because it was given a perfect score? I wasn't, but I'm certainly outside of the norm on that one. On the other hand, I was slightly disappointed with MGS 4, mostly in the story area. The gameplay was great, but that story was built up a lot more than it deserved. The final boss fight may be classic, but the ending just about deflates it of all meaning.

My Opinion: Two Thumbs Up - You're going to like it…just take my word for it.

This Week's #1 Pick

Little Big Planet (PS3) - Are you really that shocked? Considering that I've been pushing this game for several weeks now (Let me think…I started the hype around E3 so that would make it 13 weeks? That is a rough guess.), you shouldn't be too surprised to see this charming little platformer on the list. The keyword there is platformer, a term that gives me the "warm fuzzies," unlike RPGs, which give me the bubonic plague. See, I have reason to hate them…

Little Big Planet is, as I already said, a platformer. You guide your own customized Sackboy through a variety of pre-designed worlds, and once you've done that, you can take him online to see the wonders of user creation. Now sure, most of these wonders are probably shaped like a penis, but once you filter through it, you might find gold. Heck, I've already seen a Shadow Moses level, a Green Hill Zone level, and a working calculator (which will blow your mind). All of these levels can be created in the simple yet deep level creator, which allows you to tinker with any item you've seen throughout the game. While I'm not 100% sure that I'm right (but I usually am), I believe that this game uses a system similar to the one found in Warcraft III's map editor. Of course, in that game, triggers they were called, the system in place wasn't exactly user friendly, and only the most dedicated map makers could come out with true gold. One of my friends was particularly good at this, but no matter how much he showed me, I couldn't come up with anything close to his work.

Now with Little Big Planet, the simplified creator opens doors to those who aren't quite dedicated enough to look up the functions of triggers, but are dedicated to the point of putting together a fun little level. Remember Brawl's level creator? It was simple, now take out all the suck, and add in the features of the WC3 creator, and you have Little Big Planet!

My Opinion: Two Thumbs Up - If you own a PS3…you would be doing yourself a disservice not to get this game.

Photobucket
- This reminds me, I reserved LBP at Gamestop, so I get a free Kratos. The newer commercials promise Medusa and Zeus…but my little download sheet doesn't say anything. It doesn't really matter, I doubt I'll use Kratos once I have decent parts. By the way, my PSN ID is Kikind if you crave to run around giant phalluses with your favorite 411 writer.

Quick Previews

Bella Sara - Horses…
My Opinion: Thumbs Down - I just…really don't like horses.

My Sims Kingdom - Did you ever play the original My Sims and wish you could play as them in royal times?
My Opinion: Thumbs Down - I doubt it.

Nerf N-Strike (Wii) - It is a first person shooter, with nerf guns?
My Opinion: Ehhh - I mean, if you are going to buy shovelware, why not get this one. Much like Chex Quest, it could be good based on the hilarity of the game's subject. Also it comes with a BRAND NEW NERF BLASTER, EFF YEAH!

Console War Scoreboard

Xbox 360 8
PS3 6
PC 4
Wii 3
DS 3
PS2 2
PSP 0

Much like Jim Rome, I am anticipating with great joy, for the PSP to run the table for the year backwards. Don't pull a 2007 Dolphins on me and win a week…why win now when you have all of next year (in particular the summer, which is the recommended time for striking) to win.

Yesterday's Attractions

Super Mario World - Hey, Little Big Planet comes out, and one of the biggest comparisons I heard during its gigantic hype wave was "Super Mario World." Usually this was followed by someone stating that LBP is better, which would be a pretty impressive accomplishment. The fact is, Super Mario World is still one of the greatest games ever to be released, and set the bar extremely high for how a sidescrolling platformer should play. Whenever a new one comes out (extremely rare), people will pull out the trusted Coolometer and see how many mega-fonzies the platformer emits, to see how it stacks up with Super Mario World. Usually the game is way off, so to see many proclaim LBP to be better is a bold statement.

Mario World took the format of Mario Brothers 3, putting Mario on a map and having you navigate which way you'd want to go. This game, though, uses the map much better, giving several different secrets as opposed to just a few items. Many will remember the secret map which allowed you to go all the way from World 1 to the final area to face Bowser, as well as allowing you to find different kinds of Yoshi.

Another well-noted feature of Mario World was the cape power-up, which is awesome beyond words. My jaw dropped when I first got it and saw how much better it was than the raccoon suit. Mario Bros. 3 has nothing on this game.

Related To - Little Big Planet
My Rating - **** ½ out of 5.

Reader Feedback

David - I won't buy Dead Space but consider it on my rental docket. I'm not sure how high on said docket it is, it might be behind Wario Land, but rest assured, I shall rent it.

spacefight - I can see that, my preference for Mario Strikers is mostly that I enjoy sports more when they have a time limit. It adds to the sense of urgency when you need to make a comeback but only have 2 minutes left to do it.

Reality - I'm not sure how I should respond to a comment that calls me out for something I didn't do, and I'm not sure how you expect me to respond. Do you think calling out my flaws is going to make me…melt or something?

aussiegamer - Fable II does look fun, though it looks very similar to the original. Which is fine, I just don't know that Fable II will be a long-lasting experience that many expect it to.

Mike - No, Mike, I have not played SKATE. Could you be more specific on the controls, though, I'd really like to know how they change up the formula from the Tony Hawk games. I'm sure the game is great; it must've been pretty good to take a popular franchise behind the barn and shoot it.

The 411

Unfortunately, my column probably isn't enough to satisfy you for a whole week, so why not fulfill yourself with the many other great columns on 411?

The 10th Hour by Derek Robbins. This week Derek breaks down the top 10 "PSX" games, and fails to mention Crash Team Racing, the best kart-racer of all time.

The Full Circle by Joe Roche. Apparently Japan and Germany are banning Gears of War 2, which is fairly surprising. Especially considering that Epic went the extra mile to avoid being banned with its special censorship features.

Working Title by Jordan Williams. The Ogre couldn't come up with any ideas so he scrambled around, like Marc Bulger in my Madden franchise mode. One of the topics he hits is Starcraft II being a trilogy, an idea I am universally opposed to.

Nintendophiles by Theo Fraser. It is a pretty slow news week for Nintendo…but I kind of expected that, because Nintendo is going to have a pretty slow winter.

Achievement Unlocked by Rod Oracheski. I'm really proud of Valve for making an achievement in Left 4 Dead that one-ups Dead Rising. Just…dangit Valve, you are reaching high levels of awesome.

The PC Spotlight by Chris Vicari. Bioware officially announced the Star Wars MMO, now called Star Wars: The Old Republic. It looks pretty good, but it would be near impossible to get my friends to convert from WoW to this.

The Hall of Shame by Vincent Chiucchi. Bomberman Zero, Hudson's attempt to kill Bomberman in one swift blow. Sega does it gradually with Sonic, but these guys are just jumping way ahead.

The PC-Centric Extravaganza by Chris Evans. Far Cry 2 has DRM, a feature that has been little more than a failure. Spore was cracked a whole week before being released with its "groundbreaking" DRM…and most games get cracked pretty quick despite all of this protection. Except for Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, which I heard took a whole year to crack.

Fact or Fiction starring Mark Salmela, Derek Robbins, and the king of being better than you, Drew Robbins. See, even Fact or Fiction thinks that the PSP is a joke!

The Classic Flashback by Ty Huston. Ty finally moved up to the ranks of column writer, and his column is filling our much needed nostalgia void. We update on the same day (so much for having Saturday all to myself), and this week he will talk about Fallout 2.

Oh wow, Gamestop called…and I can pick up Little Big Planet…tomorrow? That is pretty awesome, and unexpected.

That is it for this week, if you want to give your feedback, just leave a comment below or email me at drew_robbins@hotmail.com.

GH:WT does have a pretty awesome songlist.

Aside from that though, yeah, it's pretty much a ripoff. Still going to sell like hotcakes though.

Actually, you are wrong, 10 does not mean perfect, it means anything 9.5 and up in those reviews. If it is a 9.5 or higher, simple math dictates that if you are only using hole numbers, it rounds up, not down. 10 is not perfect.

Well, Sony has augmented the Terms of Service for PSN. They can view, banned, call law enforcement, etc on your basic activities on the PSN. You need to agree to the TSN before you use Home, LBP, etc. They can legally record everything you say or do online.

Finally, someone who agrees with me that Mario World was just that much better than Mario 3.

You mention the game, yes. Do you talk about the game or speak anything about it other than it was made by the people that did Oblivian, no! Best advice shut the hell up and report about the game not opinion. You sound like an ass clown, that loves to be anal raped. Do 411 a favor and shut the hell up so you will never ever be heard from again!

"They can legally record everything you say or do online."

Now if that was Microsoft, I bet people would be freaking out.

If you do melt, please make sure to post the Youtube video!

But seriously, the inherit bias in *some* of the previews is obvious. Maybe I'm missing the point of a preview column but you have to understand that yes some people will like your classic fantasy based JRPG or Western RPG.

I'm not saying to stop bashing them, you as the writer deserve the freedom to. However, I guess what I'm trying to say is try to keep the opinion away from the preview. After all you have a bolded section for your opinion so keep it there.

Posted By: Reality (Guest)  on October 25, 2008 at 08:21 AM

Not on IGN it doesn't, Duncan. I believe they have given a 9.9 before, to Mario Galaxy. I understand when Gamespy gives a 5 (though Gamespy sucks), because they do have to round. But with Gamespot and IGN's scale, there is no rounding at all.

But otherwise, yes, you are right, Duncan.

And yeah Spacefight, Guitar Hero has a great tracklist.

Hey Cousin Oliver, how was your beating in FoF *cue evil laugh*.

Just so you know most Gamestops are selling Little Big Planet today, so be sure to call them.

Oh, and thankfully you didn't list Motorstorm as a PS3 launch title. I am legit surprised IGN, Gametrailers, and 1 Up have all called Motorstorm a PS3 launch title when it came out in March *maybe February* 2007, 4 months after the PS3 launch.

Wait, Fallout Boy, I don't think I really even stated my opinion...well actually I did, my opinion is that YOU would like it. Why are you complaining, it isn't like I said Fallout sucks. Because if you really want me to...I can.

And a tip, calling someone an "ass clown" who loves "anal rape" pretty much makes your argument void.

Oh and thanks for having a legitimate argument, Reality. It is much appreciated :)

Could of, should of, would of......but they didn't do that. You can speculate all you want. Hell, you can speculate that Canadian Footbal will be as popular as the NFL, or the 360 will outsell the Wii. Unfortunately, speculations rarely equal reality. All you have to do now is beg the big man to remove my comments, as you want to do.

On a side not, LittleBigPlanet will be available today! Booyah Grandma, Booyah!

Posted By: David (Guest)  on October 25, 2008 at 11:35 AM

I don't get how people like you can say rock band is better than GH. Sure its entertaining for 5 mins when youre with friends but I play xbox mostly on my own. I want to play a guitar game. I dont want to sing. I dont want to drum.
And the bottom line is thsat the guitar part of Rock Band is shit. Its not fun to play.
Im not being funny but I think the problem you have with the "mixed jumble of notes" stems from the fact that youre probably not very good. I am good and I dont see a mixed jumble of notes that dont fit the song. And I think most people would agree.
Oh, and Oblivion is the greatest game ever made. Fact.

I'm very glad you feel that way about perfect scores for games. Of course, it does depend on the reviewing system - for instance, if you're doling out scores out out of five, then a full rating makes sense. But since a lot of people tend to uses percentages/decimals, a full score should come along once every Mario 64 or so.

Carl, guitar hero 3 had terrible note maps. There were points you were hitting notes whilst there was no fucking music being played. The first two games and even rock the 80s had some relation between the song and the notes you had to play.. GH3 not so much.

Yeah Gamestop called me too. But when I called my local store to see if I could pick up my preorder, they had absolutely NO IDEA of what I was talking about when I told them that, and stood firm that they don't have a single copy of the game.

I have to wait until Tuesday to pick up LBP from my Gamestop. I waited too long to reserve it. Oh well.

Rock Band 2 rules, but I probably will at least rent GH:WT to have more songs to play.

And to the poster a few posts above mine. Oblivion being the best game ever is opinion, not fact.

GH4 pretty much has the same setlist as Rock Band with around 10-15 songs unique to each version. only songs i would want for GH4 would be Hotel California by the Eagles, and Do it Again by Steely Dan, but other than that, it's Rock Band 2's setlist. if transfering over rb1 songs and DLC wasn't enough, i STILL hold a grudge against activision for not allowing GH3 guitars to be compatible with Rock Band 1 on the PS3. For that, activision never ever deserves my money again.

I have to agree with Drew regarding the GH: Rocks the 80s tracklist. The 1980s was a prime period for hard rock/metal. The likes of Heaven and Hell & Mob Rules by Black Sabbath were released in the 80s. Ozzy Osbourne's solo career (with Randy Rhodes on lead guitar) started in the 80s. Number of the Beast, Peace of Mind and Powerslave by Iron Maiden were released in the 80s. Walls of Jericho & Keeper of the Seven Keys by Helloween were released in the 80s. Instead of any stuff from those albums, GH: Rocks the 80s gave us the likes of Seventeen by Winger, Heat of the Moment by Asia & No one like you by the Scorpions. That's quite a nosedive.

I thought everyone knew to take reviews with a grain of salt... even more so after the whole Gamespot drama.

Personally I use Gamerankings to see the averages across the board. Its not a perfect system but its better than relying on one score.

Dangit, Toddo, thanks for filling up my daily rage quota.

That is almost as bad as kids saying "iPod invented the MP3 player" or "Halo invented the FPS"

I can trump that. If it wasn't for Harmonix, there wouldn't be a Guitar Hero series .

There's not much difference between Guitar Hero Vs Rock Band and Civilisation: Call to Power Vs Alpha Centauri: The former outsells the latter on brand name. However, the latter was created by the people who were originally responsible for the former. On top of that, the latter is generally considered superior.

Alpha Centauri was SOOOO ****ing awwesome. I loved Civ 2, and that game was an upgraded version (in the future). My mouth literally dropped when I created a man-made lagoon with the planet buster. **** nuclear weapons, the planet buster was were it was at....

To play an updated/"improved" version of Fallout in Fallout 3 was something that could almost circumvent my view of LBP being #1, but the total options in LBP twarted Fallout. The up-and-coming challenger bested the prominent veteran.

On a related note, you should talk to your brother about getting a 360. The price is cheaper...and you an buy the arcade unit and the 60 GB HDD bundle for $299. Seriously, that would be my recommendation.

You get:
-A headset
-60 GB HDD
-A 3 month subscription to XBL

GH: WT cannot is overshadowed by the F-I-R-S-T Rockband. I was going to buy the game for the exclusive Tool content (I love me some Tool...also Maynard lives/has a vineyard in AZ). However, I am hearing about all problems with the game's structure and "touring mode," I figured that I will wat for the price to drop....or I'll pick it up used at some point.
