The Gamer Girlfriend 12.18.08: Halo: Combat Evolved
Posted by Greg Bruno on 12.18.2008
Have you ever wanted to get your girlfriend into gaming but weren't quite sure how? The Gamer Girlfriend will give you insight into how to get your girlfriend to play!
Welcome to the brand spankin' new column for 411 Games. In this monthly column, you'll find ways to see how you too can get your girlfriend to play some of the video games you love while simultaneously getting the girl's perspective on the games. Taking her suggestions may lead you to find a game she does enjoy, if not the one you pick out for her.
And hey, guess what? I'm going to do all the hard work for you. I've enlisted my girlfriend to play one game a month. After playing the game, I'll collect the important research on the experiment, analyze the data, and present to you the findings. Hopefully, this will give you the insight you'll need to get your girlfriends, or girls who are friends (I'm aware of who my audience is) to play some games with you.
For this month, we're starting off old-school and going with Halo: Combat Evolved. My girlfriend, Andi, has never understood my obsession with first person shooters. Therefore, I'm introducing her to the one that really got me going. Sure, 007 Goldeneye would have been ideal, but my N64 and I haven't talked for years. Not since (insert dramatic pause here)…the incident.
Anyway, we'll break this down somewhat like a review for a game, but with the female psyche at the helm.
Got your safety goggles on? Ok…let's do this.
The Game: Halo: Combat Evolved for the Xbox. This is considered to be the game that allowed the Xbox entrance into the console wars. I figured this would be a great place to start.
The Girl: Andi : Girlfriend Evolved. Not much into gaming other than Spider Solitare, Word Scramble, and Zuma.
The Review
Halo Combat Evolved is one of the highest rated video games to hit the market. As a launch title, it gave Microsoft the kick it needed to enter the console race, then primarily dominated by Sony and Nintendo. From Bungie Studios, creators of Marathon, came Halo.
Just by looking at the cover of this game, what do you think it is about? Andi:
Some type of futuristic war most likely against aliens
Graphics:
While certainly a bit outdated, Halo: CE boasts impressive graphics to this day. Texture detail is still impressive, even after all these years. The mouth animations are a bit stiff, as are some character movements. The environments in Halo: CE have continually been a source of criticism, especially The Library level (ugh). A lot of the levels feel as if they are being repeated and that you're looking at the same wall or hallways the whole way through. The assault on the beach is superbly done and a blast to play.
What do you think of the graphics in this game? Andi:
I think that they're decent for a fairly older game. The flood, covenant and chief all look good but human faces are a little sketchy and not very realistic. Scenery is alright but not very detailed or textured.
Sound:
Marty O'Donnell and company really started off with a bang with Halo: CE. The musical score is fantastic (as usual) and the sound effects are top notch. Bullets and plasma generate realistic sound when flying past your helmet, explosions boom loud and strong, and voice acting is pretty good all around.
What do you think of the voice work and sound in this game? Andi:
I think the voice acting is good. Chief doesn't say much but he sounds cool when he does. I think Cortona is humorous but can be taken seriously as well. As for guns and explosions they all sound pretty realistic, or at least similar to what I think a covenant gun would sound like if it existed.
Fun Factor:
Playing through Halo: CE again (this would be my 5th time through the game) was a treat. Regarded as the best in the trilogy, it stands the test of time. Players who have been stuck on Halo 3 should go backwards and start from the beginning to relive the story that began it all.
Do you think the typical non-gamer girlfriend would enjoy this game? Andi:
No, probably not. The controls can be a little overwhelming and are really hard to get used to. The story line is also hard to follow. I played the game hoping to finally understand what Halo is about and still feel pretty confused. I also think the maps are confusing and it probably would have taken me forever (or never because I would have walked away) to beat if I weren't playing with my boyfriend.
What would be a good way for a boyfriend to get his girlfriend into this game, if at all? Andi:
I think it would be rough for a guy to get his girlfriend into this game. Mine tried the whole "Cortana & Chief" romance thing (nice try, babe). And even if she tried it, I think most girls would get frustrated with the controls and give up pretty quickly. But if you do convince her to play, be patient. Walk her through the buttons and the joysticks. Explain things like weapons and vehicles, and most importantly HAVE FUN with it. I feel self conscious enough playing video games and there is nothing worse than my boyfriend getting pissed off and aggravated. Encourage and coach her. It'll help. All in all I'd say give it up boys. This is one for you and your friends to play at home online and you can corpse hump each other all you want and not be called gay by the girls ;-)
Final Girlfriend Approval Rating: 5 out of 10 Andi:
Girls- If you're really trying to show your boyfriend how much you love him (or lost a bet like me) don't give up. The controls seem hard at first, I know I was running into walls and looking at the ceiling. But you really do get used to it. My biggest advice- back up! When things are flying at you and you don't know up from down just back up and get your grounding. It makes it a lot easier.
Well there you have it folks, you're first glimpse into the mind of a hot girl when she plays a hot game. Tune in next month for the next installment. Special thanks to Andi for being so awesome and to my brother Dave for the kick-ass logo.
Leave some comments suggesting games you'd like to see in a future column.
Andi knows way too much about plasma guns and stuff like the covenant. She does indeed sounds like your girlfriend Greg. How about having her try out Halo 3 multiplayer so she can spend hours getting harassed by 13 year olds?? Great stuff though, compelling idea with this series of articles!

i must start by saying.. ur gf is really hott.. who cares if she likes videogames?! lol, jk! i think this column is awesome & very well written. im excited to see what games u try out next? im thinkin halo was a big step.. how bout mario kart or somethin next? haha
Posted By: jujus (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 12:38 AM
The logo came out awesome! This is a great article. I remember when I attempted to get my girlfriend to play Halo she immediatly shot a full round off, looked straight down and whipped two grenades at her own fett. I then removed the controller from her hands and put Viva Pinata back into the console...

I don't want my wife to play Halo. Halo is man time! I had a friend that got his girlfriend into Halo and He regretted it for the next 2 years. She would get mad at him and his friends because he would want to play Halo with the guys and not always with her. My then GF and now wife did however buy me my first Xbox and a copy of Halo CE. Yea that's right I married her.

Maybe instead of trying to get your gf to impress you, you should do something you both enjoy IN REAL LIFE! I like games too bro, but put the fantasy world to bed when you are around her and dont try to force her into doing something only you enjoy doing.
Posted By: guest (Cody) (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 10:32 AM
Hey Cody, it was her idea to play since she knows it's something I'm interested in :)

pretty cool, it was fun to read. My gf will never play halo, she calls it Gaylo..... sad face. But she does love hexic.
Posted By: David (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 12:26 PM
I'd smash
Posted By: Midget (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Great article. If your girlfriend is aggravated by the controls, you should try Assassin's Creed because the controls are fluid and easy to learn.
Posted By: Pete (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 01:33 PM
I play Halo with my boyfriend all the time... Or, rather, Halo 3 online anyways. Don't really play the orginal now. Should do, though... Just prefer the online thing.
This girl's off her rocker though. Five out of ten? Pfffft. Ten out of ten to play with your boyfriend, if you ask me... Until he starts throwing controllers around. :P
Posted By: Chloe (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 01:39 PM
Ok this is really stupid. I'm a girl and I play halo because I like it. Not because any guy told me to.
Posted By: Grace (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 01:46 PM
Grace...you totally missed the entire point of the article. No one is making any one do anything.
Posted By: Greg Bruno (Registered) on December 18, 2008 at 02:02 PM
I would disagree with your girl's assessment. For example, my wife plays Halo all the time. Even when I'm not there.
Posted By: Eric (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 02:03 PM
d00d, ur gf is smokin! if it was up to me i'd do what SHE would want me to do lol. but all jealousy aside... i would have to admit that the xbox was quite overwhelming for myself, i mean super mario 64 was mindbottling when it came out and it only had one thumbstick. but she's got a good attitdue towards trying to learn and thats more than anything one could ask for. I tried to get my gf into the gaming scene, but to avail. Good luck on upcoming intallments!

Fantastic article! really good work..I just wonder what bet she might have actually lost to be put through such torture?haha that's not a real question..anyway I definately want to see more article up..good work playboy!

Being a girl gamer, I had the same thoughts about Halo 2 when I first picked it up. It was really discouraging, getting negative kills =[ But lo and behold, now that Halo 3 has been out for a while, I like to sit back on the couch, pop a beer, and beat the crap out of my husband on Halo =]. It's funny..he used to make fun of my aiming skills..now he can't get out of my line of fire when I am in possession of a battle rifle.
Good article!
Posted By: Amy (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 03:28 PM
Maybe it's just that picture, but your girlfriend is not hot. And her answer make her seem like she doesn't know what she's talking about.
Posted By: BMan (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 03:58 PM
BMan, I'm sorry your eyes are broken. Also, the point is to get a girl who DOESN'T play games to play games. Hence why it seems she doesn't know what she's talking about. It's because she doesn't.

I'm a gamergirl, hence my GT. I've been into Halo since day 1. I am the one who got my boyfriend into Halo and other games like COD and Gears. So not all GF are like that. My BF was used to games like Mario for Super Nintendo and older games and really not into gaming at all. Not We both fight over what we play so every game we get HAS to be co-op. He is even trying to get his 60yr old father into gaming.
Oh, BTW, hi URK
Posted By: BAD GamerGirl (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 06:23 PM
hay grate artical dude. im a gamer who hapends to be a girl (i dont like the girl gamer term). there are good point and bad points in havin ur partner play games with u.
THE BAD
A) He always wants to play somthing u dont
B) He gets annoyed when u p0wn him all the time
THE GOOD
A) u always have somethin to talk about or debate about :)
B) it's easy to buy gifts cos 9/10 u want the game he does YaY us lol

try we love Katamari or Beautiful Katamari, those have easy controls and if the gf likes cute things, then both have plenty.
Posted By: Jhales (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 10:39 PM
I'm impressed your GF was willing to at least try it. There is no way my wife would ever play Halo with me. She just rolls her eyes when she sees me powering up the 360. One suggestion though that might help a little - they make a pink wireless controller now!
Posted By: Snipercidal (Guest) on December 18, 2008 at 11:09 PM
ha true that getting aggrivated ends it pretty quick
Posted By: Joey (Guest) on December 19, 2008 at 12:16 AM
I finally convinced my girlfriend to try playing Halo, but she just can't get the controls figured out. The use of two sticks really throws her off. I don't understand... it just comes naturally to me.

Hey that was really fun to read and very intresting, I was sad when I figured out that's all you typed. I've tried to get my sister and all my cousins. They got discouraged and quit on me when I beat them 50 2 16 when it was 3 on 1:) I tried to get my old man to play it but he sucked. He did exactly what yer girlfriend said, run into the walls, stare up at the ceiling, waste a whole clip of ammo and get like -7 kills. The comment about somebodys girl getting pwned by 14 yr olds, that would be me:p Us 14 yr olds have LOTS of time on our hands and my friends have live. This Christmas I gotta go to Arkansas to see my moms side of the family. Seriously do they even have electricity there! Luckily my messed up uncle has an xbox O (

It's funny because just the other day my friends and I got schooled by 4 chicks on team objective. I couldnt believe a level 45 veteran got pawned by someone called 'hot chief' xP good times...wish I would have sent a friend request to em >.

Hey great article. I happen to be a gamer girlfriend and I always think its awesome to see other girls playing. I suggest BURNOUT REVENGE for a next game. Its tons of fun and very easy controls. Will definatly be tuning in next month.
Posted By: Sara (Guest) on December 19, 2008 at 07:46 AM
Alright, here's my 2 cents. My girl got me my 360 and about half of my 10 games, so props to any ladies out there stickin by there guys through the great gaming era. In a time when alot of guys still want to be 8 years old and play games until 3 in the morning the women who love them get nothing but love from me. That being said, I too, have tried to get my girl into gaming, need less to say, that was a belly-flop of an attempt. I think if you can get them into a game for more than 30 minutes, you are a pioneer. Keep the posts rolling and I can't wait to see what you get into next. Oh, and My girl played halo 3 online once...Rumble pit...k/d ratio...well...0/16, but man do I love her though

All i can say is, beware being put on the opposite team from your girlfriend and winning. . . or even worse. Killing her!

Your GF sounds pretty amazing your a lucky guy!

Posted By: Ribbons (Guest) on December 19, 2008 at 02:09 PM
Shit man, she is willing to give them a try just because she knows you like them? Why is she a girlfriend and not a wife? This is a great read, you and Andi offer a unique perspective on the subject of getting a girl to play. I have to know though, what is the incident you refer to with your N64?
Posted By: Todd Vote (Registered) on December 19, 2008 at 02:49 PM
I think you can get your partner to play video games and if they're cool with that fine.
However promoting the idea that this is the solution to a real life problem with women and men who deal with gaming issues is a little ridiculous.
Sometimes there are more problems to real life then the simple solution and as a women who once was on the receiving end of neglect due to video games, seeing stuff like this pisses me off.
Its not a joke to some of us, so go ahead with your little experiments, not that they'll mean much in the long run.

Girl Gamers are a rarity. Points for the article dude. My GF is a gamer in training and is getting an xbox 360, Halo and Gears 2 + XB Live for Christmas...shes really excited. not to brag but shes also very damn well attractive, we are lucky guys Mr Greg! Looking forward to the next article!
PS. She Kicks my arse at mario Kart =P

try rainbow 6 vegas 1 or 2
midnight club los angeles
me and my wife game together, she loves halo 3 and rainbow 6.
Posted By: LokiShinigami (Guest) on December 19, 2008 at 11:26 PM
haha, i remember the first time i tried halo 1. i played the campaign by myself (with all my guy friends watching, who had already gotten use to the controls) it was really annoying and it took forever to get use to the 2 joysticks, even though i love goldeneye and perfectdark.
that was the best way for me to learn how to play. if we had played multi player, i would have hated it. it is in my experience that (most) guys are horrible teachers with video games because they just get too competitive and want to win. :P
anyways, i wasn't new to gaming, but i now have only 2 games for my 360: halo 3 and beautiful katamari (yes, i love cute things too, ha...ha?)
Posted By: shizah (Guest) on December 20, 2008 at 08:01 AM
Personally I would suggest starting off with "Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2" as its Coop, and allows for the introduction of realtime use of two sticks at once, and also an introduction to the concept of shooting the crap out of things without overreaching.

Funny thing is, I kinda feel like I got my boyfriend(more)into Halo (he probably played it with his friends a bit, but not any more than anything else). I, however, have a freakin' Halo shrine in my room. XD
I once spent $200 in one day on Halo things. ._.
Only problem is, my boyfriend doesn't have any game console at all, so he has to be my guest all the time.
It's great to see your girlfriend's at least trying games - and don't worry, Andi, I went from SNES to Xbox, and I always fell down stairs until I got used to first person. When you get a good game that you both like that you can play co-op on, then you'll have some real fun.
Posted By: Skeah (Guest) on December 20, 2008 at 11:12 AM
im a gamers wife and he got me into halo before anyhting else. i wasnt very into it until he showed me the online play. now im in love with halo 3 and call of duty on live and wouldnt wanna go a day without it! :p

lol, my husband and i find this article amusing. when we were going through bungie.net, he saw the opening quote to "the gamer girlfriend" on bungie he laughed and totally agreed. he just finds it nice that on top of not getting yelled at for playing video games, he has someone to play with at home. :)

Notice that there are beers on the table. Some rating low on really good games under the influence (RLRGGUI)is the most relevant information to apprehend here. Speaking of apprehending, someone should make a law pertaining to RLRGGUI. If DUI is illegal, why isn't RLRGGUI?
PS: Nice column

Hey guys! Just wanted to say thanks for all the great (and not so great) comments! Keep em comin! :-) We still haven't decided on a game for next time so keep the suggestions rolling...
Posted By: Andi (Guest) on December 22, 2008 at 02:43 AM
I started playing games with my man... just to have time with him!
When we married I was still in college studing all the time, so he was used to having MONDO gaming time. When I finished, he wanted me to get into computer games and such. So, I tried a few games, but when we finally bought our first XBOX with Halo 1... the rest was history.
It was hard for him to be patient for me to learn the controls, (so BE PATIENT!!! Laugh and say "it's ok honey" a lot!!!) but the first time I ever beat him in Halo 1 mano y mano... was video documented by moi, for my everlasting enjoyment.
Since then, he's taken a week off for the release of both Halo 2 and 3... and our firstborn responded to Halo music like, "Hey... I know that sound... VERY well!" (I couldn't play during the second preggo, cause I got too mad all the time.)
After I got over the "first timer" console contol gaming issues (like accidently sticking my man, Joker, during co-ops in Halo 1, followed by an "opps, your glowing honey")... it's been a mainstay for us. However, we have found playing on two different TV's helps reduce negative or slightly abusive physical contact during gameplay. But all in all... I LOVE playing 360 now. I'll try any game once. But Halo takes the cake.
AND, I LOVE playin' with my man. For all you single hopeful young pups out there, God did make a few of us who cook, clean, and play. Keep your chins up, and remember to run a few laps now and then. 'Cause, we like to play more than just XBOX. K?
Side bar (Can I add... quite frankly being a girl on live... alone... can really suck sometimes. Guys online find out you're a "chick" and they can act like real pigs! I mean come on guys... a girl likes Halo, plays it, and beats you. Get over it! And if I didn't beat you... all the same... have an ounce of class why dontcha? K? And then, maybe someday you'll get a nice (or not so, to each their own) girl who will game with you too... AND IN PERSON!) ;0)
Now, I donate my time counseling women who are married to the gamer generation. (Don't laugh, it's true.) I tell them it's better to play with... than to craft alone.
Some try it.
Others... they ain't buying it.
Pick wisly.

My girlfriend is your typical hot white chick. She loves playing Viva pinata,I tried the whole halo thing. She despises Halo and Halo 2, but loves Halo 3 matchmaking!!! No b.s., she's not that good but could hold her own. Her favorites are King of the Hill, Stab out, Fiesta and Rumble Pit (for some reason she can't tell the difference between her and her teammates, Hence rumble bit, she can shoot whoever she sees). On the Downside she Hates everything else. She would rather be shopping or watching the Hills.

My gf is awesome, she loves halo and she can even beat me at it sometimes (And i'm pretty good at halo =])
Posted By: Adam (Guest) on July 22, 2009 at 05:32 AM
I guess I lucked out, my girl LOVES halo and kicks ass at it also. She beats me half the time, she's a level 46 and she also loves RPG's and Racing games so we have alot in commen and have alot of fun. Girls like it best when you dont take it so serious and just fuck around. we do alot in halo 3. we'll get drunk and drive around the elephant we call our pirate ship and people are mermaids and the vehicles are little boats. We have alot of fun doing that, ARGH!!!!
Posted By: xBWOMPx (Guest) on July 22, 2009 at 09:19 AM
this girl I've been talking to ASKED ME to teach her how to play. And she's super cute. She usually plays Mario, but she wants to shoot stuff. She might just be looking for an excuse to cuddle up on the couch though LOL. I'm not complaining though =p
Posted By: OMGwtfROFLlolz (Guest) on July 22, 2009 at 11:43 AM
My boyfriend got me so into Halo 3 that I got my own 360 and proceeded to complete all three Halo games, and spend quite a bit of time on Matchmaking. I always tease him about turning me into such a geek but he's just a giddy fool when I mention it, bless him :P
I think any girl who's found love with someone so into gaming can take the plunge and she'll probably learn to enjoy it too.
All I have to do now is beat him at it :P (Which might take a while)
Posted By: Ali (Guest) on July 27, 2009 at 07:44 AM
The column is great but as imagined it would be a bit overwhelming with the controls. Maybe you should try gears of war. My ex and her friend use to love it. The controls dont seem too hard. They also enjoyed ripping people apart with the chainsaw, specially if they were stressed about something.
