411 Games Fact or Fiction 02.23.09: Mobile Gaming, Legends of WrestleMania, Wii-HD and More
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 02.23.2009

Alright, alright boys and girls, it's time for another edition of Fact or Fiction and this week we get a new contestant into the mix as newbie Anthony Kennedy joins us to rumble with 411mania veteran Theo Fraser. Leo however hasn't been on FoF in quite some time now so let's see how he fares as well.

1. Legends of WrestleMania will have downloadable wrestlers at some point but none of them will be Randy Savage.

Anthony Kennedy: FACT - Whatever Vince's beef with the Macho Man is, I'm sure THQ has been giving the strict edict that Savage, much like Benoit and Lesnar, are erased from WWE history till they see fit to include him again. (As well as the fact that I'm sure likeness rights aren't owned by the WWE to even incorporate him into the game.) While wrestling gaming fans have complained of the staleness of the THQ WWE series, I'm actually looking forward to this game to see if it brings the much missed fun factor to wrestling games with all these create-a-wrestler, create-a-finisher, create-a-entrance features, etc, etc….

Theo Fraser: FACT - THQ brought in downloadable wrestlers with Smackdown vs. Raw 2009, and I expect them to continue to offer that service with Legends of WrestleMania. Legends' has a great roster as it is, but as always there's room for improvement. Ricky Steamboat, Razor Ramon, Diesel, Mick Foley, Vader...the list goes on of potentials for DLC. And whilst Randy Savage is certainly a Legend of WrestleMania, I can't see him being included as a downloadable character. Vince McMahon maintains a long standing grudge against him for whatever reason, and the Macho Man would have assuredly made the original line-up if Vince was willing to promote the Randy Savage name under the WWE umbrella again. As it stands, Savage didn't make the cut, and I don't see any of the issues being resolved between the two parties in the space of time DLC would be viable for the title.

Score: 1 for 1 - If Savage is excluded in any way shape or form (DLC, CAW, Unlock), I riot.

2. You will be purchasing a Nintendo DSi when it releases in the US in a couple of months.

Anthony Kennedy: FICTION - There just aren't' enough new features or graphical improvements to warrant a necessitated upgrade on my current DS. While the GBA, DS, and DS Lite were worthy upgrades of their predecessors, this looks like a few bells and whistles thrown on system that really hasn't ran its course. If Nintendo doesn't watch itself, they could suffer the same consumer backlash Sega did with all their "updates" with the Sega Genesis system. 32X anyone?

Theo Fraser: FICTION - If I wanted to be facetious I'd point out that I'm a UK citizen, so I wouldn't be purchasing one in the US anyway. But for the purposes of this question, let's assume I live in the US. With that being the case, I still wouldn't buy a DSi on launch day as I simply haven't seen enough support or even interest expressed towards it by third party developers and the like. Even Nintendo are being cagey about their plans for the device. If Nintendo start releasing top-notch DSi exclusive titles, then I guess I'll be forced to buy one, being the total Nintendo-nut as I am. But as Anthony said, it's more of a model upgrade than the next must-buy Nintendo handheld. Sure, the added camera is pretty cool, and I'm excited about the technical improvements, such as having four times as much RAM as prior models, but is that enough to make me fork out $170 when I have a perfectly acceptable ‘ordinary' DS in my possession? I'm afraid not. But check again with me in a few months once we know Nintendo's long-term plans for the system and it might be a different story.

Score: 2 for 2

3. You're looking forward to playing Killzone 2 for the PlayStation 3.

Anthony Kennedy: FICTION - And that's more so because I didn't play the first Killzone. There are just way too many tactical, online co-op first –person shooters coming out. If it doesn't have a Tom Clancy or Halo in the title, I'm passing on it. Gaming needs to be careful, there are only so many sequels or alike games consumers will spend money on, after a while gamers, much like moviegoers and wrestling fans, will get to think they pass on this one.

Theo Fraser: FICTION - I'm in agreement with Anthony on this one. I didn't play the first Killzone; it never really appealed to me, and I have no burning desire to try out the sequel. I do hope it turns out to be good, however, as I know of quite a few people who bought a PS3 in anticipation of Killzone 2. For the diehard fans of the original, they deserve an equally satisfying follow-up, so I hope it delivers in that respect. But no, I'm personally not too fussed about its release, and I certainly don't see it as the PS3's next ‘killer app'.

Score: 3 for 3

~SWITCH!~

4. The iPhone will become a major player in the handheld market.

Theo Fraser: FACT - ‘Major player' is the key word here. I'm confident that it'll never see the kind of success the DS has seen, but I think Apple will comfortably stand their ground. The iPhone is said to be extremely developer-friendly, making sustained support from third parties a likelihood. Rolling out a constant stream of new titles will help it to compete with the ever-expanding DS catalogue, and the fact that it's an all-purpose multimedia device means you'll always have it on you, making gaming on the go more accessible than ever. In that sense, it has the potential to do well with the casual market. Holding it back is the price of the machine itself, but there is one big plus: digital download. For those out there too busy or too lazy to go to the shops to buy new games, you can simply connect to the online store and download new titles; a feature severely lacking on the DS. Admittedly, many of the iPhone games are casual, ‘quick fix' titles, and the DS is still the place to go if you want deeper, more complex titles, but the iPhone has a good chance at holding its own against the proving commodity of Nintendo's handheld.

Anthony Kennedy: FICTION - Have to disagree here. The majority of teens that would even think about purchasing an iPhone game already have a DS or PSP. While the adults will only that need a distraction while standing in line somewhere or take a break from work, will, more than likely, stick with the non-complex freebie titles. Theo makes a good point with its accessibility to new games through digital downloads, but ultimately its unconventional control set-up does not lend itself to cutting into Nintendo's handheld market share with the limited games available.

Score: 3 for 4

5. An HD version of the Nintendo Wii will be released within the next two years.

Theo Fraser: FICTION - It's constantly rumored but I just don't see it happening. Nintendo have shown zero interest in accommodating the hardcore crowd, and software sales aren't exactly lacking (minus the disappointing sales of Wii Music, but that was more to do with the design of the game itself rather than the hardware it was created on) so there's no need for them to raise the stakes and entice people with new hardware. If you've ever had any interest in buying a Wii, you've most likely got one already. Factor in Nintendo's focus on offering a gaming system to the masses, and an HD Wii seems rather unlikely. The casual market won't give it a second glance if it's a pricey bit of kit, which it would have to be to include the necessary HD-upgrade. It's hard to tell how the market will change in two years, but HD isn't a priority for Nintendo right now, and I don't see their attitude changing.

Anthony Kennedy: FACT - While I agree that Nintendo doesn't let the hardcore dictate their strategic move and the limited graphics of the current Wii won't be improved by a jump to 1080p HD, there may be a market for an HD Nintendo Wii, even if just for limited number of them. It's been proven in the past that hardcore tech heads will shell out money for even minute hardware upgrades (360 Elite anyone.) I can see it coming and also see them passing.

Score: 3 for 5

6. Resident Evil 5 will surpass RE4 in sheer awesomeness.

Theo Fraser: FICTION - This is based on two factors. For starters, preliminary reviews have been pretty mixed. Official PlayStation Magazine gave it 5/5, calling the co-op mode ‘revolutionary'. Certainly high praise indeed. However, Xbox World 360 Magazine gave it 81%, and whilst this is a respectable score, it's nowhere near the highs of Resident Evil 4. This particular review stresses that the single-player mode has been gutted, with everything being geared towards co-op play. As a series previously aimed solely for solo gamers, this is quite a departure from the norm, and could be a bit of a misstep on Capcom's part. Secondly, you have the issue of meeting expectations. Resident Evil 4 was so good that the bar has been raised exceptionally high for all future Resi titles, forcing expectations into the stratosphere. With that in mind, is it even possible for Resi 5 to surpass its predecessor? With the amount of hype surrounding the game, I get the feeling there could be a ton of disappointed gamers come launch day.

Anthony Kennedy: FACT - Theo mentioned the early reviews, as we all know there very subjective, and could be more reflective of a reviewers preference to single player than co-op. I have all the faith with the latest RE, based on two words: next-gen consoles. (Or is that three? I'm not sure when it comes to hyphened words.) Between the graphical and hardware power of the 360 and PS3; and Capcom's creativity,(check out Dead Rising) I believe Resident Evil 5 can and will surpass its predecessor.

Final Score: 3 for 6

Well there you go for this week's FoF. Miiiiiiisteeeeerrrrrr Kennneeeedyyyyyy..............Kennnneeeddyyyyy has just popped his Fact or Fiction cherry and thanks for participating once again Theo.

Check back with us next Monday for a brand new edition! See you then!

Why are we still calling PS3 and 360 (and sometimes Wii) next-gen consoles? I think they're current-gen by now.

Will Legends of Wrestlemania have DLC? the real question is will SvR 2009 ever have DLC for the 360. Getting an answer from THQ is frustrating.

Wow, "If it doesn't have a Tom Clancy or Halo in the title, I'm passing on it." What does it take to be a writer on here? Apparently not much. The reason there are so many sequels is BECAUSE of people like Anthony Kennedy who refuse to branch out to other titles. And really - that is a HORRIBLE stance to take, especially in a genre so rich with titles. To be that close-minded is ridiculous.

I'm not going to be an idiot and call out fanboy bias, but I am gonna call you out on not being qualified as a game-writer or even an official opinion-giver. Why should anyone on this site trust the opinion of a guy who states in plain black and white that he will not consider any games that don't exist outside the umbrella of two franchises that have barely been around for 10 years? And by Tom Clancy games, I'm sure he is starting his experience at Splinter Cell, which makes this even worse. Of course,, to prove his cred, he'll claim he played Rainbow Six, but I seriously wouldn't believe that seeing how closed your gaming periphery is...

Seriously, I popped in Halo 3 for like the first time after playing some games like Gears of War and Resistance 2. And after playing those epic games, I get to the first level of Halo 3. And I'm in a fucking jungle, just chilling and jumping around basically doing jack-shit. It was pretty garbage.

Killzone, on the other hand, looks fantastic and looks pretty damn epic at it you're gonna missing out if you don't play it.

Drone is a fucking lame insult that nerds like you use, and most people can afford a PS3, the problem is that it has fuck all good games.

DangerousK, BiggStankDogg – Hold up on the flaming for a moment there guys! You’re taking what Anthony Kennedy said completely out of context.

He wrote that he felt there were too many “too many tactical, online co-op first –person shooters coming out”. There are a lot of them, and unfortunately a lot of them are sub par, or lacking in quality. The Halo and Tom Clancy franchises however, have had ample titles and time to refine and hone the gaming experience.

I don’t believe he was writing off all games not Halo or Tom Clancy – simply saying that they’re the only good ones, and the ones he has time for!

Actually, it looks like he may be a hidden character along with Strike Force, IRS, Demolition, and others.

As far as Savage in DLC, THQ sent back a response to me saying that he may be part of it.

Also, WWE has started to show Savage more and more (i.e. the cover of the Saturday Night's Main Event DVD case) AND they have a Macho Man DVD set coming out in June.

"If it doesn't have a Tom Clancy or Halo in the title, I'm passing on it."

So how exactly DOES Bill Gates penis taste?

Seriously-- get off microsofts dick. You know there's plenty of people out there who are primarily Wii or PS3 players, but you wouldn't know it from how EVERY FUCKING REVIEW on this site is for a 360 game... why don't you get some actual PS3 reviewers since only like two of you even seem to have the system?!

2. You will be purchasing a Nintendo DSi when it releases in the US in a couple of months.

Of course not. They took away the backwards compatibility with Gameboy Advance games.

"If it doesn't have a Tom Clancy or Halo in the title, I'm passing on it."

All your credibility just went right out the window.

How can you expect anyone to respect your opinion when you so openly say you rule out more than 90% of a genre because they are not sequels of your favourite game, then in the very next sentence state

"Gaming needs to be careful, there are only so many sequels or alike games consumers will spend money on"

You sir, are a Jackarse.

Jonny Richardson -

Even the assertion that Tom Clancy and Halo titles are the only worthwile ones in the bunch only reinforces what I was saying. That is the most ridiculous assertion for someone writing in a videogame related field could make. I'm not flaming, I'm stating a truth. If any published VG writer were to write something like that, they would be fired and ridiculed by the community.

With an attitude like that, PONG would have been the pinnacle of gaming because nobody would believe that a game could get any better and refuse to play new ones. No matter how you interpret what was said, it all leads to ignorance and the mindset of someone whose opinion should not be printed in a videogame section.

Well it's been said before, if you think you can do better submit a piece to Ashish or Ramon, I'm sure more great writers are always appreciated.

I seriously laugh my ass off at the way people throw around the word credibility on the internet. Bottom line, 411 is a site for fans by fans. 90% of what is posted on this site is that of fans with opinions who enjoy sharing them with other people. If 411 were to start posting things that we knew to be untrue, but posted it anyways just to get more hits, that would ruin the credibility of this site.

Anthony's statement about not touching a tactical game without Tom Clancy, or Halo in the name is no different than Sony fans creaming themselves anytime they hear the name Kojima. Seriously, it is an opinion in a basic true or false opinion article. Throwing around the word credibility like that doesn't give your comment any more of it.

Oh... and Jerk and a half... What the hell does Tom Clancy have to do with Microsoft? Last time I checked, Clancy games get released on all systems...

On a different note, I hear that the legends from SVR2008 will be able to be imported to the new Legends of Wrestlemania game. Any one else heard this?

FACT OR FICTION: 411 games section is too focused on 360

FACT. No arguing, it's true-- you need better coverage for Sony & Nintendo.

Posted By: M:-X (Guest)  on February 23, 2009 at 01:29 PM

Todd: my comment was directed towards the HALO portion NOT the Clancy portion. Or are you selectively ignoring that? Just because you didn't want to see it doesn't mean it's not right there.

I could get it if he said Gears or if he said Call of Duty (which is multi plat) but HALO?!?!?!?!

Halo is pretty much the M$ flagship franchise no? So yes, saying you will only play that is an obvious 360 bias, just as if I said RESISTANCE ONLY!

Posted By: Jerkandahalf (Guest)  on February 23, 2009 at 01:33 PM

"Also, WWE has started to show Savage more and more (i.e. the cover of the Saturday Night's Main Event DVD case) AND they have a Macho Man DVD set coming out in June."

Yep...and in the case of the first comment, the only person you can say that's 100% accurate about is Benoit. Brock and Savage have it GOOD compared to him. Brock was even on Mr. Perfect's DVD, and I think they congratulated him on his MMA success on WWE.com or something similar. He isn't edited out of past PPVs as far as I know either. And things look up with Savage on DVD (SNME, his set, he's on a few of the Legends Roundtable discs too IIRC) and he's ALWAYS been all over 24/7.

But Benoit...you know. And yes I maintain that I understand why and wish other fans would get over it already.

P.S. and remember you CAN use CAW to make anyone you want in there.

Posted By: James (Guest)  on February 23, 2009 at 01:36 PM

P.P.S. the more and more I think about it, now that someone mentioned it I think the Savage issues are due to him owning his character and not giving the rights to WWE (for a reasonable cost at least). That would make sense...but then how do you explain Warrior (also, you know, the guy they went out of the way to release a burial DVD on as well?)

And just so you know, Owen Hart is unlikely to be there due to Martha Hart wanting nothing to do with WWE and barring them from making money off of his name.

BiggStankDogg – fair points! At the end of the day it’s important to remember that FoF represents our personal opinions – not our professional ones. Perhaps it wasn’t the wisest remark to say, but we live and learn!

Remember the old days when someone could state an opinion without being attacked by PS3.

Posted By: Guest#8816 (Guest)  on February 23, 2009 at 04:04 PM

"Todd: my comment was directed towards the HALO portion NOT the Clancy portion. Or are you selectively ignoring that? Just because you didn't want to see it doesn't mean it's not right there."

And my comment was directed towards the Tom Clancy portion of the statement. Just because you chose to call him a Bill Gates fluffer based on half the comment he made, by your own logic, it doesn't mean that the other half of the comment isn't there, right?

"Halo is pretty much the M$ flagship franchise no? So yes, saying you will only play that is an obvious 360 bias, just as if I said RESISTANCE ONLY!"

Exactly!!! He didn't say he would play Halo only, he said he is not one to touch those types of games unless it has the name Tom Clancy or Halo attached to it. So you only chose to comment on half of his statement. and it just so happened to be the portion that was relevant for your dig at Microsoft. Same principals, right?

My point is to say that the above is a question and answer opinion based article. You came in just blasting the guy for his views, apparently just becuase you are as passionate about the PS3 as he might be about the Xbox360.

If you disagree, by all means, debate. But if your only response is to call someone a Bill Gates penis licker just because they like Halo, it doesn't make you look cool or intelligent. It makes it seem as if you are playing to the lowest common denominator jsut to get a reaction.

Todd -

I love how someone will shout "You have no right to critique an opnion with your own opinion!" Or the old standby "If you can do it better, do it yourself".I DON'T want to do it. I want someone who knows what they're doing to do it so I can read a decent well formed opinion. That's why I come to this site for the wrestling news, but become disappointed when I read stuff like this in the gaming section. This has nothing to do with Sony or Microsoft. It's as if these statements absolve the writer from ignorant writing. There are plenty of FPS titles on both systems to warrant a look, not just Tom Clancy or Halo titles. I agree with on the point of being a fan of games running this section, I just wish they didn't like a handful of games and ignore the rest of the world. To go to someone for an official opinion on something gaming-related when that someone is closed off to the majority of the subject is a bit counter-intuitive, wouldn't you say?

Also, perhaps you should read my comment and show me where I threw around the word "credibility". Maybe I don;t know my own strength and threw completely off the page, but I can't find it.

I can also recognize veiled fanboy trolling like with that Kojima comment. I find it funny that Sony bashers will downplay the importance of titles like MGS, but the mere rumors of it coming to the 360 will result in axious rejoicing. We all saw it with the FF13 megaton - all the people that were indifferent with Final Fantasy became insta-fans when it was announced as multi-platform. So please, spare me your ass-laughing.

Please, PLEASE stop being his apologist.

Well Mr. Stank Dog, I am pretty sure my conversation was with Jerk and a half, and I never used your name in anything I said, did I? Also I never said "You have no right to critique an opnion with your own opinion!"
I said if you disagree with someone by all means tell them, but do so in a respectable manner. Calling someone a penis licking troll because they like Halo is pretty childish. Where in my statement did I say you shouldn't argue someone's opinion with your own opinion?

And my Kojima comment was not to troll but to show the other side of the fence. I was trying to illustrate how sony fans get just as much up in arms about anything Kojima related as 360 fans do about anything Halo related. You can take it as trolling if you want to, I promise not to give a rats ass.

All he really said was that he wasn't going to take a chance on unknown games when there are titles you KNOW will have the budget and polish to be good - guaranteed.

Trying to spin that as being a 360 fanboy is retarded, but look at the sources.
