Bonsai Blast (iPhone) Review
Posted by Greg Bruno on 02.10.2009

Title: Bonsai Blast
Developer: Glu Mobile
Genre: Puzzle
Platform: iPhone, Google Android

The iPhone has certainly become a contender when it comes to gaming options for the casual gamer. Bonsai Blast from Glu Mobile is an excellent example of what the iPhone’s App store has to offer customers looking for a fun, pickup and play gaming experience. Gamers looking to find an affordable time passer for their phone should look no further than Bonsai Blast. Reasonably priced at $3.99, this Zuma-like puzzler will keep you entertained for quite some time.

The concept of the game is very simple. You control a device which shoots out colored orbs. The object of the game is to connect those orbs that you shoot to those coming through the level in order to clear the string of orbs. In order to shoot the orbs, you guessed it; simply tap on the screen to where you want your orb to go. The level completes when enough orbs have been cleared without allowing them to reach the end of the trail. It may sounds more complicated than it actually is.

The levels in Bonsai Blast are very unique due to the interactivity with the level items. For example, bouncing your orbs off of walls in order to reach certain treasure chests will raise your point level. You can also shoot your orbs into a chute will allow your orb to travel around walls and other structure you may not have been able to get past otherwise. Points are tallied up after the completion of a level and the player is given bonus points for combos, bounces, chutes, shooting through gaps, and getting chains of orbs.

One of the more exciting parts of Bonsai Blast is the ability to ear certain power-ups upon completing orb combos. These can certainly turn the tables on a tough level. The wind power up will reverse the flow of the oncoming orbs, giving you much more time to eliminate them from the level in order to clear it.

Bonsai Blast has two main modes of play; Adventure and Survival. Adventure mode allows you to move to the next (often more difficult) level upon finishing the current level. Once you beat a level in Adventure mode, it is then unlocked in Survival mode. In this mode, you are able to chose a level and try to, well…survive as long as possible without letting the orbs reach the end of the trial. This adds loads of replay value to an already addicting game. Survival mode will keep you coming back to beat your scores again and again.

If you enjoy puzzle games, Bonsai Blast is the game for you. It is a fun, addicting puzzler that will keep you entertained for quite some time.
