SDCC 2009: Tekken 6 Preview

SDCC '09 Hands On: 411mania gets a try at the new Tekken game co-promoted with Tapout. Are you prepared for the absolute awesomeness that is Tekken Campaign Mode?
The folks at Bandai/Namco brought over the Tekken 6 game for Comic Con and held some gamer tournaments to promote the new brand co-promotion between the Tekken 6 video game and the Tapout MMA clothing and apparel company. The new Tekken 6 game features clothes and shirts worn by the characters designed by Tapout. The coolest thing I like about this new game is playing the new Campaign Mode. Remember Tekken Force mode? Well, Campaign Mode is basically a new action adventure mode for Tekken 6. Its a 3-D style beat 'em up game feature, think a 3-D final fight that you could test out in the playable demo version. I love Campaign Mode because I basically love any beat 'em up style action game, but this is with Tekken characters, making it even more awesome.
The Campaign Mode offers 40 levels of play and numerous bosses. There are pick-ups, weapons, and you can even play as one of the Nancy robots. The levels I got to try are fairly straight forward and easy to play. The most awesome thing is that you can pick up a Gatling gun and shoot that freaking boxing kangaroo for extreme pleasure. I was having a bit of trouble the enemy targeting system since once there's enemies close by or in your area, your view is fixed or focused on them. My only other issue is that enemies sometimes stand in rows together and are a little repetitive. But really, that's just another beat 'em up game quality you kind of have to embrace. Also, there's no grappling feature with your character moves in Campaign Mode. Doing your juggle combos and special moves in Campaign Mode is also super cool.
Getting re-acquainted with the Tekken fighting mode and my favorite character, Paul Phoenix was pretty cool. You get to start the game with all your characters, and you can customize your character online. Unfortunately, no Gon in this game which makes me a sad panda. I really like the grappling and the charged up attacks that Tekken brings to the table.
I also spoke with Tapout's Punkass while I was checking out Tekken 6, and that interview will be coming later. Tekken 6 hits Xbox 360 and PS3 on October 27, and PSP on November 24.

Seriously, I think Campaign Mode is worth the price of the game alone. You can shoot the kangaroo with a gun. Also had a bit of a Die Hard arcade vibe.
One can hope that some day we can get Gon as a DLC though.
