A Q&A With the Deca Sports Developers at Hudson Soft
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 04.24.2008
We dig into the developers to get some answers on Hudson's answer to Wii Sports.
We recently spoke to the developers of Hudson's Deca Sports which releases on May 13th. in our Q&A session we got into specifics over online play, a DS version, Mii integration and what Deca Sports brings to the table.
------------------------------------
1. How long has the game been in development?
A: About a year.
2. Did the success of Wii Sports persuade you to develop this type of game?
A: Not really. We just tried our best to make the game as fun as possible.
3. How big was the development team?
A: About 20.
4. In regards to multiplayer, was there ever a plan to include online play or Mii integration?
A:Since this is a brand new game and not a part of any series, we concentrated mainly on establishing what DECA SPORTS was all about, so that the people can understand what kind of a game this actually is.
5. Did any games/competitions get left out?
A:Oh yes, there were plenty of them. But some of the nominees may become candidates once again for the possible preceding product, so I won’t go into specifics here.
6. There have been a few games out there that look to mimic what Wii Sports was able to do as far as ease of use, fun factor and re-playability but haven't quite been able to do so. What does Deca Sports do right that other titles such as EA Playground or Carnival Games haven't been able to accomplish?
A:First off is the fact that there are 10 sports featured here. That’s twice as much as Wii Sports!! Not-so-familiar sports, such as Badminton and Curling, haven’t been seen in a stand-alone title, but can be featured here in a very unique sports compilation. You’ll see that some of these unfamiliar sports can be extremely fun to play, too. The game is also filled with various single play modes as Tournaments and Leagues. These modes add to the depth of the over all game and what you get is something not seen before in a sports game.
7. What about the game, are you most proud of?
A:We tried to put focus on the very core elements of each sport in terms of gameplay, so that everyone, regardless of their age or sex, can play. I would have to say that that is what we’re most confident about.
8. Though the game has yet to be released, are you already thinking about a sequel? If so, is there anything off the top of your head that was left out of Deca Sports that you'd like to bring into a possible sequel?
A:If we were to make a sequel to this, we would like to consider a function where the users can create their own team and characters.
9. We've seen a few Wii party games, get ported onto the DS. Any plans on bringing a handheld version?
A:Since the main aspect of this game is the interactive controls using the Wii remote, consideration for DS is not on the table at this time. But, there is always a possibility if we could come up with a unique idea to express that.
10. What would you like to tell prospective buyers of Deca Sports?
A:This is a Sports Compilation that is proudly brought to you by Hudson.
Anyone can become a star athlete here, whether you are a child, adult, male, or female. There are also various features for single players like the League Mode, to multiplayer aspects for both competition and cooperation.
Our hope is for everyone to enjoy DECA SPORTS, whether it is with friends, family, or a significant other.
