Fable 2 Feature - Walking the Path of a Hero: The Finale
Posted by Ty Huston on 11.13.2008

Fable – the name itself sparks controversy in the gaming world. After years of hyperbole and finally the release of the original game, designer Peter Molyneux – best known up until this point for his works with “God games” Dungeon Keeper, Populous, and Black & White - was heavily criticized for over hyping the game due to the long development period and lack of dozens of ideas that he had for the game yet were never implemented.

Released in 2004, Fable received praise for being a fun, quality adventure game yet was met with a horrible stigma thanks to the over eagerness of Molyneux to tell the world of his fantastic ideas and failure to follow through. Now, the highly anticipated sequel has arrived and yet again Molyneux has hyped it to death. It’s time to see if it lives up to the expectations.

As part of reviewing the game, I’ve been asked to provide sort of an ongoing commentary of my first couple of weeks playing the game. Here, I’ll give a little insight into how I’ve played the game and what my experiences were like. Unfortunately, I don’t have the set up for taking screenshots of my handy work unlike some other 411 columnists *cough*Oracheski*cough*.

The Hero of Skill

Finally, I reached Bloodstone and the Hero of Skill. Of course, he’s some pompous ass named Reaver who wants me to gain more fame (renown) before he’ll work with me. So, I run around and do some boring tasks, like working for good old T.O.B.Y. and then killing him for being a douche. Really, all of these tasks are remedial and have grown tiresome as I’m finally ready for the big fight. What will it be like? Will it be some serious shit like the end of Fable: The Lost Chapters? We’ll see.

Oh and hey! I guess my wife did glitch out for a while, but now she’s back. That’s cool. My little girl says the cutest things too. Nice touch.

I go back to Reaver, and he agrees to work with me except … the bastard turned me in to Lucien. What an asshole. So he and I escape through the tunnels under his mansion, and end up fighting a ginormous shard along with Garth and Hammer. We defeat the thing, and now, its time for the big one.

The End?

Holy crap. Alright, so the four of us go back to the guild where we do some sort of ritual to gain an ultimate weapon and Lucien shows up, “kills” me and takes the other three hostage. Theresa saves me, I make a comeback and the music box makes its return. Apparently, the music box is the greatest weapon ever. What the fuck? Alright, I’ll learn to deal with that. Also, Lucien kills my dog, my wife and kid. You son of a … I use the music box to suck out the magical juice from Lucien who was siphoning it from Hammer, Garth and Reaver and … and …

I won’t give it away. I can’t. However, I will say this.

BULLSHIT.

Anyway, at the end I get to choose if I want to bring back all those who died to help Lucien’s plan, bring back my dog and family or make myself super wealthy.

Well, the wife and kids are nice but I want my dog back the most. So there. Screw the money and piss on all those innocent people.

What’s next?

The full review, duh. It’ll be up tomorrow.

I agree... very bad ending. I nitpick at this game all the time about it's many, MANY flaws, but there is still something that draws me to it, I don't know what.

Nevertheless, I should have just waited a bit longer for Fallout 3 in hindsight.

That dog must REALLY be something special to chose it over being super wealthy. The wife and kid, I can understand.

Can you use the wealth in your next time playing?

The "wealth" card only gives you one million gold. If you buy real estate like a mad man you should be well over a million by the end game. Personally, I bought every building in Albion and was making nearly 16k every five minutes so wealth wasn't an issue.

At the risk of avoiding a spoiler what does everyone think of Theresa's last line before your let loose on the world again?

Theresa's last line leads one to believe that via DLC we may actually get a decent ending to the game.
