Four Player Co-Op 5.13.09: Remakes, Movies, DLC, Food and More
Posted by John De Large on 05.13.2009

Photobucket

Player One – John De Large - John De Large (that's me) is awesome. I write for the brand new webcomic "Cavalcade of Whimsy," I can make my own games, I can save the world, rebuff unsavory offers from hoes and if I have time, I write for 411mania.com.

Player Two – Ramon Aranda - Ramon Aranda is the 411 Games editor, which makes him the higher power that all of us in the gaming department answer to/beg for free shit. Ramon is also the go-to guy for anything Boxing related. Whether or not this means he can punch you out, I don't know. Just call him sir and no one gets hurt.

Player Three – Sean Garmer - Sean Garmer handles a lot of reviews, reviewing just about all the games I wanted to review, but that's okay, he gave MadWorld a nice review, ensuring that I'll enjoy it. Sean is also a soccer fan, but that's okay, at least he doesn't like curling…. I think.

Player Four (yes, four!) – Shylo Elliot - Shylo Elliot…. Well, there isn't much I know about Shylo, so I talked to him and by his own admission, he "watches wrestling only a lot," and Mick Foley is one of his favorite wrestlers, so he's cool in my book.

Three Four Player Co-Op – Week 2

Topic #1: Last week, I mentioned a Resident Evil re-make in the works. This week, I'm going to bring a Turtles In Time re-make to your attention. Also, Capcom is rereleasing Marvel vs. Capcom 2! On top of that, Kotaku is reporting that there'll be Pokemon Gold and Silver remakes for the DS! Rank these re-makes/re-releases from the title that has you most excited to the one that has you least excited.

John De Large - -Actually, the Pokemon remakes have me most excited, since I never played Gold or Silver and always wanted to.

Close second is MvC2. The Wet Dream Team of Wolvie, Akuma and Strider? On my Xbox Live? Oh yeah! What I'm not looking forward to is the MvC2 tournament my local Play 'N Trade will likely have to commemorate the release. JDL HATE TOURNEYFAGS!

A distant third is Turtles in Time. I love the Turtles, but I have a computer program that lets me play old games (I dare not say the E word) so there's no rush for me to scoop up a remix with bells and whistles. Count me in though if there's an extra level or something.

Last but not least is the Wiimake REmake. I got that shit on Gamecube and I can play it in my Wii. If I want to wag a stick at a screen I'll play Wii Sports or Zelda, thank you.

Ramon Aranda - This one's easy... TMNT, Resident Evil, Pokemon, Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Turtles In Time was all kinds of awesome at the arcades and the SNES version was pretty good too. Been waiting to play this again, hopefully over Xbox Live.

Sean Garmer - Well, I've been stoked for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 coming out for quite a while now. In fact, I'm working on getting a bigger hard drive so I can fit that on there as my 20 GB that I have right now is almost full on Rock Band DLC. My 360 got the red ring of death last week and they've already repaired it and I should get it back Tuesday or Wednesday. A updated Turtles in Time would be great as I loved that game when I was a kid. I would love nothing more than to play it with updated graphics and a cool new look. I'm not too impressed graphically with the Pokemon Platinum that I have right now, I do not really much care for an updated version of two old games. I understand that they want to stall on working on new games for a while, but I don't know, personally I already played and beat Gold and Silver, that's more for the people that didn't play that batch.

Shylo Elliot - The Turtles in Time remake excites me most. Four player action in 3D and online? Hell yeah! Marvel vs. Capcom 2 rerelease seems like it's just a measure to put more copies out there on the market, as it's pretty rare. People who don't have it yet will enjoy this; resellers won't. The Gold and Silver remake excites me the least, because as though there is much that can be done to improve the game, I don't have any desire to go through the Kanto trek again. I guess it's necessary to have a way to import the Generation II legendaries into Generation IV (please don't flame me in the comments if this is already possible).

Topic #2: There's a Gears of War movie in the making. Excited? Are you gonna see it since the Dragonball and Street Fighter movies were so good?

John De Large - -Here, have this instead, it's already made and it's fucking AWESOME (no pun intended):

Ramon Aranda - The Dragonball and Street Fighter movies suck ballz.

(Carter Pewterschmidt: Thank you Ted, that was the joke!)

Gears? I'd have to see a trailer but I think the material that the director would have to work with given what GoW is all about - it would probably be easier to make an entertaining flick.

Sean Garmer - Hey, the Dragonball movie was not horrendous. I actually thought it was ok, sure they kind of made up a storyline for it, the best part of the film was probably Yamcha with his ridiculous laughs, and Goku for being utterly clueless, the rest was a wash really. Both Street Fighter films were awful, but for some reason I feel that they have to try hard to mess up the premise of Gears of War. It's a bunch of jocks killing off the Horde in various locales and grungy places, how hard is that. This is also a game where they can come up with their own storyline and I wouldn't be offended either. For some reason I feel like they will get this one right because it's an American type story and characters, it is also Microsoft & Epic's big franchise they want to make sure this turns out well.

Shylo Elliot - I'm not an avid movie-goer, and while my Spidey senses tell me that DB Evolution and the SF movie are atrocities put on film, I can't say until I've seen them. Game movies aren't promising, but a Gears of War movie should have enough violence and explosions to make the average Spike TV viewer happy.

Topic #3: Speaking of Gears of War, Microsoft and Epic are releasing all of its DLC, updates and content, PLUS new content for Gears of War 2..... on a disc! All of the updates together would normally cost $40, but this package is only going to cost gamers $20! Regardless of how much you like or dislike Gears, you got to admit this is a smart move that'll save gamers cash and let 'em get what they want for Gears while Microsoft and Epic get to make some coin. Companies should bundle DLC more often.

John De Large - DLC bundled on a disc works for me: less hassle with the MS Points and I can return it if it's fucked up or flawed. Easy.

Ramon Aranda - I say just bundle it online. DLC bundled on a disc - meh. Just another reason to have to drag my ass to the store. Call me lazy but I'd want to download it.

Sean Garmer - Unfortunately, I still only have Gears of War the first game, but maybe one of these days I'll get to buying the new one. I'm so behind on games it is not even funny, but I kind of wait till stuff gets to about 35 bucks to buy "the new ones" anyway. I think this is a good idea by them to make DLC affordable to those that may not have XBOX Live, or for those that don't like to have their parents asking them why they bought this XBOX thing on their debit card all the time, like me. I wouldn't have a problem with people doing it like this more often, the only people it could hurt is the game companies because they could have another box laying out there, but if they release them in-stores at the same time as online they can fix this problem. The ones that actually spent the money online may feel ripped off, but sometimes good things come to those who wait.

Shylo Elliot - It's convenient and it helps gamers save money. As a semi-frugal gamer, I appreciate this measure. DLC should be bundled more often, I don't see what kind of controversy this statement could make.

Topic #4: Smackdown vs. Raw released another batch of downloadable wrestlers (....ok, Superstars) not too long ago. Next up, you want to see Jack Swagger and Christian available for download AND more moves, counters and reversals from England, Japan, Mexico and the indies (see also: CHIKARA Pro, PWG, etc).

John De Large - I wonder if Sean Altly will troll me again for this.

Listen, I think Swagger is a pretty cool guy, he outwrestles Cena, boots people in the face while they're in mid-air, looks like Biff Tannen and doesn't afraid of anything. Christian is my hero for succeeding in the wrestling world despite NOT being especially intimidating looking and generally being awesome. He just has "it."

Downloading moves separately would suck, but I think downloadable move sets as opposed to or in addition to unlocking them would be awesome, especially if we're downloading wrestlers whose moves may not already exist in the game or for those of us who want to make some Colony CAW's.

Ramon Aranda - Jack Swagger? That guy's a joke. Christian - now there's a guy that needs to be in the game; seriously! As for more moves/counters/reversals I mean yeah I guess that would be a nice addition but who really wants to download moves? The thought of it just makes me sick.

Sean Garmer - I bought the first pack of DLC wrestlers, but I really didn't care to have the semi-legends pack because for one I thought that should have been Legends of Wrestlemania DLC, and 2nd because I really didn't care about the wrestlers on it, except Vader. I'm fine with anything that brings more moves to the game, I don't really care where they are from either, and it would be cool to have Swagger and Christian, I think since the WWE Smackdown vs. RAW 2010 is up in the air, maybe we could see another DLC Pack before this 09 run is over. However, for some reason I feel like it won't come because they want people to buy the new game, and these are two characters that fans really want in the game.

Shylo Elliot - Jack Swagger and Christian make lots of sense being added as downloadable content, and I'm surprised he wasn't added right when he became one of the cornerstones of ECW (plus he has that awesome theme music!). Christian is a perennial fan-favorite. There's no downside to having new moves, counters, and reversals, except possible glitches due to DLC having less play testing time than the main game. Although wrestlers like Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne have exotic move sets for WWE, the indies and Japan generally have insane-looking moves that would appeal to fans.

Topic #5: Activision has announced both Guitar Hero: Van Halen and DJ Hero. Admit it, you just threw up in your mouth a little and you kind of wish Activision would go back to making Pro Skater games (y'know, the good ones, so anything before American Wasteland).

John De Large - Dammit, is nothing sacred? Van Halen (with Diamond Dave and NOT Hagar) is awesome. "I'll Wait," "Hot For Teacher," "Unchained," all of those are awesome songs and now all of them are going to get butchered by drunk frat kids.

Meanwhile, DJ Hero sounds like a good way to encourage wiggers, rave kids and techno douche bags to pick up gaming, then break their fingers off when they try scratching on the Expert level. With the exception of Rhythm Heaven (which is awesome, because it's fun and doesn't take itself seriously, unlike the hardcore fucktards who play games with "Hero," at the end of their titles), DJ games should be sent to jail, then Hell, then Double Hell, then Wisconsin.

Ramon Aranda - I'm done with any new GH or RB games for the immediate future. I love Guitar Hero III and Rock Band 2 and those will do just fine. DJ Hero could be interesting if done right and that new Armin Van Buuren title for the Wii kind of has me interested; maybe more so because I dig his music. Generally speaking though, publishers need to slow their rolls on those bi-yearly music titles. Enough's enough.

Sean Garmer - Guitar Hero also announced Guitar Hero 5 in all of that too. I hate Activision at the moment because I feel like they do not really care about the franchise itself and are just trying to whore out any game with the title "Guitar Hero" on it to make a quick buck. Personally, I'm someone that started out more with Rockband and worked my way backwards to the Guitar Hero franchise, and now I own all the GH/Rockband games that have come out for XBOX 360. I love music and enjoy buying new Rock band DLC every week (cause you know GH World Tour decided they don't even wanna try and compete in that department.) Regardless, I threw up in my mouth because I do not wanna see probably my favorite franchise (hey, I love music, I love fake rocking out to my favorite tunes, there is nothing wrong with that.) Become this washed up fad because Activision tried too hard to slam it for all its worth. For as much as Rock band started the band thing, the GH name is still more well known, and if they whore out games, they make the Music genre look bad. I don't know what to make of DJ Hero, I'll have to wait and see on that, I give them credit for trying to reach a new audience, but with Band Hero already announced this is just getting ridiculous. Before you know it, we will have a "Hero" for every damn instrument that ever existed and people will be confused as hell, and wonder what the shit happened? Technically, Rockband is also shelling out two games this year, but at least they are focusing their attention on the Beatles, and something different for the kids. I would probably be less pissed if GH 5 wasn't announced with the other two games, just because this screams "we are desperate to one up Rock Band in getting our newest game out first." When in reality I don't know what else you could put into the four instrument game to make it "new again." (new instrument maybe?, I'm still waiting on the possible Keyboard accessory) That may be another reason why it is good to wait on things and see what the market is for your current game, Van Halen, and DJ Hero, before you shell out another prized Guitar Hero game.

Shylo Elliot - Granted, I'm not the most technologically-knowledgeable guy around, but I don't know why Activision continues to release "expansion packs" instead of releasing all the new songs, skins, venues, etc as DLC. While Van Halen's songs are better suited to challenging gameplay than Harmonix's Beatles Rock Band, Activision's habit of poorly charting songs ruins my desire to play the songs. Oh, and anything before American Wasteland? How about anything before 4? 4 was a good game, but it introduced the horribly broken flatland tricks that made the game's challenge a joke.

Topic #6: Warner Brothers is BAWWW-ing that the release of Batman Arkham Asylum has been delayed "to ensure Batman: Arkham Asylum is of the highest quality for gamers." What kind of excuse is that, does this game have confidence issues or something? Anyway, what are you playing/going to play in the meantime?

John De Large - They couldn't release this game and fix it later with a patch or an update? I mean how much damage can they fix in a month anyway?

For games, I play Tee Eff Two everyday and twice on the weekends.

Also, the new ASUS boasts 4GB of RAM, so I can play Left 4 Dead with this girl I know who begged me to get it.

Outside of that? New Fable 2 DLC is coming out, I'll be sure to snap that up. I've also been playing the original Gears of War, thanks to a good friend. Note: I play Gears for the Multiplayer experience ONLY, since the storyline can fuck right off.

Also, Ramon is supposed to score me inFAMOUS to review, so provided I get it, I'll play it.

Ramon Aranda - Hey, I don't mind seeing a game delayed if it benefits the gamer! That being said...right now I'm playing The Godfather 2, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, WWE Legends of WrestleMania and Call of Duty 4.

Sean Garmer - I'm gonna be reviewing the new Klonoa game for the Wii pretty soon, so I'll be playing that. Of course, gonna keep playing FIFA 09 and Rock band 2 (I play mostly Expert Vocals,) especially now that my sister and a friend of hers are coming into town. I just feel bad cause I offered to join some bands, and now those people probably think I just left them high and dry since I got the red rings unexpectedly. I'll probably also try to beat Pokemon Platinum, since I'm pretty close to beating it, and I'll be out of classes for a little while, so I can then take it back for something else. I'll probably start really trying to beat Mirror's Edge too while I'm at it. Gamertag is: Crazy Sean05 if you wanna hit me up to chat or play a game.

Shylo Elliot - I don't know why the author of this question is attacking Warner Brothers for doing something that more game producers ought to be doing. I'd gladly wait for a game's release if it means that it won't be released in a glitchy almost-finished almost-playable build. If Warner Brothers says this, and Arkham Asylum has control or bugginess issues, then grab the pitchforks and torches. I'm not a big Batman fan, and playing Batman games doesn't really excite me. I still have a backlog of PS2 RPGs to complete, starting with Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.

Bonus! You like eating, you like gaming, you like eating and gaming together (or else you just aren't human). What's your favorite snack while gaming and/or indulging in media?

John De Large - Favorite snack food: Munchies Cheese Mix with Coca Cola (canned, not bottled).

Runner up is Taco Bell's cheesy double beef burrito.

Ramon Aranda - Cold Stones! (Runners up were Doritos, no flavor specified, with Tapatio Chile and lemon and homemade chocolate chip cookies with milk. All of them sound like tasty combos.)

Sean Garmer - I don't think that statement is true, I personally don't really like eating when I'm gaming because my favorite thing in the whole world, Ice Cream, tends to get controllers sticky and what not. The only time I probably eat while gaming is when I'm playing a console RPG (not one on the DS), because watching cut scenes usually allows me to eat while I'm waiting for the game to start again. I eat more when I'm watching a movie then playing games. For some reason too, if I eat and play games it makes me feel like I'm not doing anything important, as opposed to me just playing. Ya'll may think I'm weird, but I just feel that way.

Shylo Elliot - I don't really eat while I game. If I get hungry, I take a break. My favorite snacks are Lays potato chips, white cheddar cheese popcorn (which does not go well with gaming), and good old fashioned microwave popcorn. I'm also a big fan of ramen, and a big fan of Diet Dr. Pepper, but I'm NOT a big fan of the two mixed together.

SUPERFIGHT!

That last question was pretty cool. I'd have to say my favorite gaming snack is pretzels, because you can eat them without getting your controller sticky and/or oily, plus they're very simple.

I guess Ramon didn't catch that this column was placed in News and not Columns. I don't check the news section of Games often, but glad I did since I like the column itself (seems like another Fact or Fiction). I don't snack much when gaming either, but I enjoy the occasional supreme-flavored Pizza Rolls snack. A little messy and greasy when gaming though, so I have napkins nearby when gaming (I haven't had them in months though).

It's only a minor bummer that Arkham Asylum was delayed. I watched a preview video of it on X-Play and I noticed that the enemy AI is rather poor. Enemies were swinging at you when you were NOWHERE near them. Also they would attack you one at a time, very slowly. Batman easily disposed of them, and it didn't look fun in doing so. I like the Dynasty Warriors series, but I don't need that kind of mindless enemy troop gameplay in this Batman game. The stealth gameplay looks awesome though, so I hope they are using this extra time to fine tune the action-oriented combat, since the stealth-oriented combat seems fine.

A Gears of War movie would seem like terminator: Salvation, but with aliens replacing the much cooler robots.

I still play Turtles in Time on the SNES to this day, and I'd love to play the arcade version of the game with friends on Live. Unfortunately, much like TMNT: the Arcade Game, it'll be shorter than the console version (the NES version of Turtles II had extra levels in it, like the SNES version of Turtles in Time had). I've also never had the chance to play MvC2 since it's so damn expensive to buy, so I love the news of this coming to Live.

I spend a lot of time dead during multiplayer games, so I like to cook a turkey and do the dishes between games.
