Sony Patents Emotion Emulation Engine
Posted by Joe Richardson on 07.02.2009

In an effort to drop the production costs of the PS3 Sony dropped the Emotion Engine on newer PS3's which had allowed for PS2 compatibility. Well it looks like the feature may now be on the way back. A Siliconera report states that Sony may be bringing the feature back thanks to software emulation. A new patent suggests that Sony has developed code to emulate the Emotion Engine on the Cell processor.

A firmware update could potentially be used to allow for PS2 games to be played on PS3, or Sony may be going the route that Microsoft has gone by selling PS2 games via PSN like Microsoft did with X-Box Originals.

PS2 BC coming back would be a wonderful thing (as long it is free and not like the silly Xbox originals). Heck I might actually buy a PS3 if that happened.

About time too! One of the reasons that the PS2 was a huge hit was because of the backwards compatibility, people don't like to get rid of stuff they don't have to and can go back to. Still might be too late for PS3 though.

I've seen a lot of complaining about this. What I don't get is why get rid of your PS2 if you love playing the games so much? I'm sure SOME of them are complaining just for attention

I laugh at people like Kedrix, who think Sony is just going to give these games away for free. Hate to break it to you, but Sony loves to suck your money away, as they're showing with the PS3, and the new PSP. What they're going to do, is basically what the 360 is doing with the X-Box Originals, and just like Microsoft, they will CHARGE you.

"What I don't get is why get rid of your PS2 if you love playing the games so much?"

Having backwards compatability lets you sell/junk your PS2, and have 1 less device taking up space (and ports on your TV) while still enjoying your old games. I played Twisted Metal on my PS2 pretty regularly, and it was nice to not have to have my PS1 plugged in to do it...

Since the PS3 HAD BC support, which they then removed, they really brought this on themselves...

I can understand selling the PS2 before when the PS3 had BC, but I've seen ppl(comments) sell their PS2 and then buy PS3, then complain about it not having BC when they knew it didn't have it

Having BC was the reason I bought my PS3 as a refurb, just to have the 20 GB version, which has BC.

If they release another new one with BC, I may buy another. It would truly become the Media center of my entertainment systems.

My bro's PS2 won't read DVD rom games, anymore, just CD roms. He didn't realize that ps3s had dropped backwards compatibility when he got his (luckily, it wasn't the main reason he got it). So if they just update the firmware to add this, that would be boss.

OR....You can be a smart shopper, go to Amazon, ebay, craigslist or whatever and buy a 20gb or 60gb PS3, which are fully backwards and play japanese games
