Sony Expecting Profit On PS3 Soon

Will company finally stop losing money on each PS3 sold?
Sony CFO Nobuyuki Oneda said during a press conference today in Tokyo that Sony has gotten its PS3 losses per system down to 10%-20% of the system's retail price, and expects to be finally profiting on each system sold sometime during the next fiscal year.
Meanwhile, Sony's games division once again lost a lot of money this quarter (July 1st to September 30th), recording an operating loss of 41 billion yen, 6 billion yen more than the same period last year.
PS3 sales were up to 3.2 million in the quarter, 800,000 more than last year.
Let's take 20% loss and the $300 model. That's $60 per system...at 3.2M systems sold, that's $192 million in loss leaders? Even at the nicer 10% figure, that's still $96M is losses in just a single quarter? And this is an IMPROVEMENT???
Is that right? How can they lose so much money?

They have always intend to lose money on the systems. They intend to make the money back from the games they sell. Most people who owns a systems have between 7-12 games by 3 years into owning it. Where they are really losing money is the gamestops buying used games. That hurts sony in that before they would sell a game and people would just hold on to them. I had countless crappy games before I moved to a town with a gamestop. But I'm with you Anon its funny to think losing that much money is an Improvement!
