Nintendo Looking to Give Developers the Choice of HD or SD Games
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 11.06.2009

Apparently still not 100% convinced on the necessity of HD gaming on a Nintendo platform, the bigwigs are mulling around some ideas as to how to approach the follow-up to the Wii.

During a recent Q&A session, Genyo Takeda, the Research and Development General Manager at Nintendo said that they are looking at both HD and SD graphics.

"Since our division has been reviewing and developing a number of hardware, we are looking into many different things, including HD and SD," said Takeda. "Also included is the review over the systems with which the creators can easily create video games with limited budget and resources."

Takeda did however state that with the current trend of programs shifting to high definition, they realize it would be the natural flow of things. But with a penchant for trying to please everyone, Takeda mentions that they are looking "at something that caters to both SD and HD audiences, which will add consumer flexibility."

Miyamoto himself also delved further into the subject saying that he'd like to give developers the ability to choose whether to develop their titles in HD or SD.

"For example, we have to ask ourselves if HD is really necessary to develop Wii Fit. Won't HD be better for the games like Pikmin?"

"The developers should choose the most appropriate graphical format depending on the software they make. To Nintendo, our theme is how we can prepare the SDK library to cater to the needs of the developers, with which the developers can more easily develop their games," Miyamoto added.

What say you? Does he have a good point?

So... Family Party Games = SD - Actual Real Legitimate Gaming Companies = HD?

I say they are lazy & the gimmick didn't outlast the lack of grapics. A lot of consoles were sold because they were so hard to find & now since that's far from the case, they are piling up on shelves even at $199.

You can't sell all of the white back stock, so you can't release the black one here in the US. They need to realise a WiiSi or WiiHD or some crap to at least upscale the current games to 720p & have future games supported at least to 1080i or something.
