Game makes $550 million worldwide.
Activision Blizzard has announced that Modern Warfare 2 has set a five-day sales record for the entire entertainment industry.
The game, which has grossed approximately $550 million, has broken six first day and fifth day records. This includes the five-day worldwide box office figures by Harry Potter and the half-Blood Prince ($394 million), the five-day domestic box office figures by The Dark Knight ($203.8 million) and five-day worldwide game record by Grand Theft Auto IV (6 million units, $500 million).
First day records broken were domestic box office figures by The Dark Knight ($66.4 million), book sales by "Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows" ($220 million) and game sales by GTA IV (3.6 million units, $310 million).
"In just five days of sell through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon," said Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc. "The title's success redefines entertainment as millions of consumers have chosen to play Modern Warfare 2 at unprecedented levels rather engage in other forms of media."
MW2 has done some impressive numbers on Xbox LIVE as well. More than 5.2 million multiplayer hours were logged on the first day alone, with over 2.2 million unique gamers playing the game on Nov. 10. Also, over 11 million achievements were unlocked in the game on the first day.

It also helps that the game costs five to six times as much as a movie, but hey. It was worth the cash.

Other games which also cost the same didn't beat out those other entertainment numbers.

This seems a bit unfair, one game costs about 5 or 6 times as much as a movie ticker

A book also costs more than a movie ticket as well, but you guys are not pointing that out. Sales numbers are sales numbers, and this game is breaking records regardless.
