Sony to Obtain New Revenue Stream From Subscription

Does Sony plan on charging users for its online service?
As reported by Joystiq, earlier today, Sony released the presentation report from its media and investor conference. Among the topics addressed in the report is Sony's plan to "obtain a new revenue stream from subscription" via the PlayStation Network.
Now don't get your undies in a bunch. According to Joystiq, chances are Sony is interested in "new subscription-based features such as the PSP rental service or one of Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming MMOs."
After speaking to a representative from Sony, Joystiq found out that the company has "not made any formal announcements on a subscription-based service" and that Sony is "looking into a variety of options."
So what does all of this mean? Well, for starters, Sony is interested in making money off the PlayStation Network. Does this mean Sony plans on charging its users for its online service? It's a possibility, but as Joystiq points out, Sony is probably more concerned with making money off a new subscription-based service, not online services that have been around for a few years.
If they start charging for psn the consoles will be dead to me until SEGA goes back to hardware or Nintendo gets its shit back together.

Why wouldn't they charge for the network? Sony makes no money on their console, only turns a profit on software and accessories. They need new revenue streams and charging a subscription would make sense. I'm sure they are even considering a cable model for their next gen platform, where the box itself is given away or included in the subscription price but you pay X dollars per month for the service.
