Is Final Fantasy XIII The Last Of Its Kind?

Square Enix president says it might be!
If you're a fan of the Final Fantasy series, then you've probably heard of Yoichi Wada. If you haven't, he's the president of Square Enix. In a recent interview with Edge Online, Wada was quoted as saying that he thinks the time has come to move the series forward. In other words, the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII could be the last traditional JRPG version of the hit franchise!
""...whether we are going to continue to internally create this type of game remains to be seen, because I actually feel that the team that was involved with Final Fantasy XIII should next move on to create and generate some 'next generation' forms of play. I really think that the Final Fantasy team could create something completely different, but at the moment they're strictly catering to the particular audience they have now."
Final Fantasy has an enormous following worldwide. How will they react to such a drastic change to their beloved franchise?

Has to be one more "traditional" FF first, make it like a when worlds collide kind of thing where some of the best characters of the past are all sucked into the same world or something to face a master plot by Sephiroth, Kefka, and Kuja. You can even tie FFX in by having Sin be the one that draws all of the worlds together. That would be a helluva way to go out!!!

Do not abandon the rpg format for the core series. That's a terrible idea.

Cool. All they have to do is get rid of everyone having funny asian hair styles, swords that weigh more then the people holding them, and fighting random monsters every time you take two steps. Then I'm in.

All the Final Fantasy Characters in one game and in one crew with you picking the leader and having 13 different endings. This should be the final final fantasy.

Well, they've already diverted from the traditional formula ever since Final Fantasy X. Final Fantasy X-2, while not the abomination everyone overreacts about, was drastically different with its battle system. FF XI was an MMORPG. FF XII was a major transfer from turn-based battling. I haven't played XIII yet, but unless it's a direct reversion back to the style of FF X (which it doesn't seem like) I don't see how this can come as a surprise.

didn't they say this about a few of the other final fantasy games?

The sales of FFXIII alone pretty much guarantee that they have a HUGE audience that will eat up anything they put out. It's all about the Benjamins.......or Yenjamins I guess.

Sounds to me like he plans on taking another swing into the overcrowded MMORPG market. Good luck with that.

You would think that Tower Defense game Crystal Defenders, the new puzzle rpg on the xbox marketplace, the Tactics series, and the Crystal Chronicles series was enough new territory for them.

FFXIV has already been announced as an MMO, and they're already preparing for the beta. So yeah.
