Modern Warfare 2 Was 2009's Biggest-Selling Game

A recent report from Top Global Markets, which combines data from NPD, GfK Chart-Track Limited and Japan's Enterbrain Inc., has revealed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the biggest-selling game of 2009 across all formats. No big surprise there, but perhaps the next four titles on the list are more surprising: Wii Sports Resort, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Fit Plus and Wii Fit, in that order.
Sales of software were down 8% overall, mainly due to a 57% drop in Playstation 2 software sales. NPD analyst Anita Frazier says that even with companies focusing on releasing fewer titles to ensure more quality, we still got more new titles in 2009. "With the huge investment needed to produce software for this generation's consoles, many publishers talk about releasing fewer titles each year, which will allow their teams to better focus on maximizing the success of each title," she said. 778 titles were released in 2009, as opposed to 764 in 2008.
