Less Sex in Mass Effect 2 Was BioWare's Choice
Posted by Chris Lansdell on 02.06.2010

The original Mass Effect was the subject of some controversy based around the suggestive scenes that could take place between party members, which included some partial nudity. When Mass Effect 2 had even less nudity, the speculation started: had Bioware lowered the level to avoid any more controversy? The company says not. The response to the question on BioWare's official forum came from staffer Stanley Woo:

"It's kinda funny that this topic keeps coming up over and over again. People who claim to be old enough and mature enough to handle sex and nudity in a game seem to believe that any lack of sex and nudity in the game is a sign of self-censorship. They generally don't believe that a game can be called 'mature' without explicit sex and/or nudity."

Woo goes on to say that the decision was entirely theirs.

"Let me tell you, folks, that as a developer full of mature individuals, we are also free to not have explicit sex and/or nudity in our games, no matter what you, Fox News, the government, or Bunky the Wonder Clown has to say about it. We have never considered it a 'problem,' it is simply a choice we have made and we have every right to make that choice."

...not to mention, they can garner more press and attention by NOT having it this time... and if needed, could bring back more in a further sequel.

This is actually a brilliant commentary on censorship in the video game industry utilizing logical game ratings. If the sex and/or nudity makes sense in the context of the story they are trying to tell, then by all means include it. If it doesn't, there's no reason to forcibly include it just for the sake of having sex and nudity. They are making a very valid point about the correct way to use any elements in a video game, whether they be sex, nudity, violence, profanity, etc., and I applaud them for it.

Coming soon from Bioware:

Where you take the role of Bucky to take back the circus from Bello the Clown. Also featuring boss balles against both Ringling Brothers and a chance to have a romantic Storyline with Grandma the clown!
Bunky the Wonder Clown will be rated T for Teen.

There's nothing quite as erotic as a suicide mission.

Tough people solving their problems with violence and not idle threats is already something that the nerds who play this can't understand, why put something else completely foreign to them in?

So you decide to make your point regarding passive resolution to a problem by inciting a demeaning tagline to the people who enjoy playing games.

Their not the ones getting drunk and beating people like you up in the street.

Can anyone spell Hypocrisy?

Hypocrisy. H-y-p-o-c-r-i-s-y.

Defined as enduring a controversy due to attempting a certain amount of mature-rated content, and then claiming that said controversy had NO part in the decision to remove said content from a consequent product.

Yeah, Bioware's crazy hard.
