Mass Effect 2 Save May Not Work in Mass Effect 3
Posted by Adam Larck on 02.08.2010

For people wanting no spoilers about Mass Effect 2, all you need to know is that choices in the game can make your Mass Effect 2 save worthless in Mass Effect 3.

For people who don't care about a slight spoiler, choices made in the last mission can result in Commander Shepard dying. If this happens, Casey Hudson, BioWare producer, explained that the dead won't come back to life when the next game releases.

"Dead is dead," Hudson said to Game Informer. "Mass Effect 3, as with the rest of the trilogy, is Shepard's story. If you have a dead Shepard at the end of Mass Effect 2, that saved game won't import into Mass Effect 3. You can play Mass Effect 3 if you died in Mass Effect 2 of course, but you'll have to create a new Shepard. Harsh? Yes. But we wouldn't be serious about the concept of a suicide mission if you couldn't die and your death didn't have serious consequences."

I actually just finished this yesterday with the full team alive. What about the rest of you?

I finished with everyone still alive at the end. It isn't really that hard, provided you take the time to properly select your squads and upgrades.

There should be some type of penalty for finishing the game with a dead Shepard. Like when you start Mass Effect 3 you owe someone money that you otherwise wouldn't and you have to pay off debt. Or you're marooned on some unexplored world and have to fight off a bunch of Husks with only melee and no resources.
