Reggie Fils-Aime Talks Core Gaming
Posted by Chris Lansdell on 03.16.2010

In a recent interview, Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime was typically outspoken about a few topics:

On Nintendo's first-party focus: "The fact of the matter is we know we create great content for younger consumers, we know we've got great content for more casual players, and we want fantastic content for that more active player who loves Metroid or Zelda, but maybe also wants something like BioShock 2 as well. And we also recognize that we don't create that type of content ourselves. We're not good at it and it's not a key focus area."

On why casual games are a better investment: "Look at the most recent NPD results. I'm not sure how much was invested into a game like Dante's Inferno, or how much is invested into a game like BioShock 2, but if that sales level is the best that they will do in a particular month, and it'll fall off rapidly from there, then those games aren't going to pay off their investment."

On why third parties haven't created core content for Wii: "So to me, it's a much bigger question than 'why aren't developers creating core content for the Wii?' It's a much broader question: 'How can the development community create content that will strike a chord with consumers and be financially attractive?'"

Hell what constitutes "core games" changes over time. Right now it's all FPS like Bioshock and Action Adventure games like Dante's Inferno. But back in the day, it was platformers like Mario, and the Zelda games. And is it just me or is every major realease on the 360 and PS3 M rated?

Little Big Planet and Banjo Kazooie would argue your point.

yes but one of those games suck.

Of course the other game was considered by many to be one of the best PS3 exclusives ever.

Consumers fault for not buying classic meets new school awesomeness like Muramasa. They suck. Period.
