Original Xbox Live Service Ends Tomorrow
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 04.14.2010

Tomorrow morning (April 15) will see the end of the original Xbox Live service as Microsoft will finally pull the plug.

A letter was sent to XBL members of the original Xbox back in February that read:

On April 15 we will discontinue the Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox consoles and games, including Xbox v1 games playable on Xbox 360 and Xbox Originals. I want to start by saying this isn't a decision we made lightly, but after careful consideration, it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox LIVE community.

Seven years ago we laid out our vision for the connected console when we launched Xbox LIVE. We believed then that the power of the Internet to connect people would revolutionize living room entertainment. It started with amazing multiplayer games, and we've since seen that bet pay off again and again with the launches of Xbox 360, Marketplace, Netflix and powerful social features like Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm. None of this would have been possible without the success of LIVE as a multiplayer gaming network.

Microsoft has come to terms with the original Xbox Live. 411mania wishes XBL the best in it's future endeavors.

And here we see the problem with videogames as a medium compared to films. With films, the format may change, but prior works still are very accessible.

Without resorting to piracy, many games are simply no longer accessible to most people. We are dependent on the whims of the developers. It is even worse when it is dependent on service like this.

This is exactly why the era of consoles will come to an end, as soon as a workable solution exists.

say what you will... I am happy about this... sad that you will be unable to play some xbox games but, the time has come... maybe the connections with 360 game titles will improve... you just can't keep kicking a dead horse. I am all for leaving old shit in the past.
