A ratings aggregate site has named 2012 one of the lowest-scoring year for games. Metacritic released its year-end summary and found that of the many games released in 2012, only fourteen console games earned an average review score of 90 or over, which is what they consider to be a a "great" game. 2011, by comparison, saw twenty-three console games hit the mark. When adding in PC and handheld games 2012 had eighteen to 2011's thirty-two.
The site notes that it is the lowest amount of games in a year to hit 90 or above since it started compiling year-end reports in 2009. Of all games, The Walking Dead had the highest aggregate score for 2012. Hit hit a 95 average, which makes it the lowest-scoring Game of the Year for the site since Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 2003.
Among the other games topping a 90 average were Persona 4 Golden, Mass Effect 3, Journey, Xenoblade Chronicles, Dishonored, Mark of the Ninja, Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3 and Trials Evolution.
