Graphics Company Creates 3D Gaming
Posted by Scott J. Simpson on 01.08.2009

Have you ever dreamed of playing your videogames in 3D? Have you ever fantasized watching Mario pop out of your television set? What about playing a Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat game where it felt like Chung Li or Scorpion were fighting right in your living room? Well, if you have, than a new device from Nvidia might make your dreams come true.

Nvidia's GeForce 3D Vision system makes it possible to play video games, and even watch movies in 3D. The system, which consists of software and special glasses, connects wirelessly to your PC and sends separate, slightly offset images to your eyes, resulting in a 3D illusion.

Being able to play video games in 3D, with glasses, is nothing new. Both the Sega Master System and even the original Nintendo had 3D glasses available for purchase, but Nvidia's system promises to create a realistic 3D experience on the PC.

One beauty of the Nvidia system is that it can create 3D images from any software that was produced using depth information. Most existing games were created with some level of depth, so they become 3D without any modification. The same is true for 3D computer-assisted design drawings.

The GeForce 3D Vision system retails for $199.99, but unless you have a top-of-the-line computer, you'll need to upgrade your desktop. In order to run Nvidia's system, you'll need a monitor that has 120hz, a Windows Vista PC and of course an Nvidia graphics adapter. The entire package could set you back at least $600, give or take.
