Trion's MMO takes a daring journey into the MMO world. Can it hold its ground against the reigning champs?
The MMO space can be a difficult one to break into. With so many free-to-play games gaining popularity and some of the bigger names already established, it's a brave venture to wander into the realm of the MMORPG. The journey is unforeseeable, and the future is decided by the gamers. That's where Heroes of Telara currently stands.
Heroes of Telara, is a Trion-developed and published MMO with some cool ideas. There are events that are triggered seemingly randomly throughout the world at different times. Some of the events are set to timers while others are thrown in by the developers at random times. At one point of the game, we were shown a skirmish between the character and a small troop of undead soldiers a-la Army of Darkness. The character then accuired a special ability after the fight that allowed her to raise the dead and use them against foes, which came in handy for what happened soon after the fight.
Beautiful Enviornments
In another example of one of the events that can be triggered, demons and imps overran a nearby village. Buildings burned and collapsed, the player killed a few imps, RPG stuff. Then, we encountered the super devil dude. It was a giant, hulking devil-looking beast with impressive horns and a lot of fire. The player ran up and attacked, only to be tossed aside by the demon guy (good throw, I might add). The player then summoned some undead helpers who emerged to fight the mean demon thing. More fighting, and a few minutes later, devil-dude was defeated. Peace was once again restored in the village, as the buildings regenerated and the sun came back. NPCs ran out to cheer for our hero, and the demo was over.
Ugly Dude
Aside from the game's dynamic world, players don't have to stick to one character class if they don't want to. So if a player begins as a warrior-type then decides down the line that they would rather be a magic user, they do not have to restart their game and create a new character. Things are as simple as switching classes at will. They will, however, have to level up their new class. It's just nice to have the option to be able to jump back and forth.
Ride the Beast
The fight for MMO space is a tough one. The development team seems to have a good idea of where they are going with the title, but upon release, we will have to see where the players go.
