Epic Mickey (Wii) Preview

How's Epic Mickey looking? 411's John De Large checks in with his preview of the highly-anticipated Wii game!
While at PAX, I checked out Epic Mickey, an epic game in it's own right. As many know by now, Epic Mickey is the story of the 3D (mis)adventures of Mickey Mouse as he explores The Wasteland, home to Oswald The Rabbit and other long forgotten cartoons and ideas. Armed with a brush, paint and thinner, Mickey can create or deconstruct different parts of his environment or even use the paint and thinner on his enemies. If Mickey uses the thinner on his enemies, they will predictably disappear, but if he uses the the paint, he can turn his enemies into friends!
Can Bob Ross do this with a brush?
There is a drawback to using the paint and thinner however, as both can only be used a certain number of times before they run out. There exist two solutions to this problem though: you can wait for your reserves recharge, little by little or you can also acquire containers that will refill your reserves, eliminating the need to wait.
The use of the paint and thinner also affects Mickey's karma, or in game morality system. If Mickey uses the paint, he will be considered a hero for his pacifism and friendliness. However, Mickey can become quite the fearsome entity if he relies on too much thinner and begins erasing his enemies and environment en masse. Your reputation as a hero or something more fearsome will decide what side-quests and allies will be available to you and even whether or not you can skip certain boss fights.
This game isn't all about the 3D action, paints and karma though, Epic Mickey also features a sizable portion of 2D sidescrolling platform action! Players can travel to new 3D worlds by clearing challenging 2D platform levels based on classic Mickey cartoons. While these fun levels test your skill and sense of timing, there aren't any methods of fighting back against aggressors in these 2D worlds, so you'll be doing a lot of jumping.
2D goodness!
Whether you like 2D or 3D action, good or evil, Epic Mickey has something for everyone to enjoy. You can pick up Epic Mickey when it comes out this November!
I have a friend who's on the developing team for this game here in Austin and he keeps bugging me to get it when it comes out (despite the fact that I don't have a Wii). Hopefully I'll have one by then, but if I do, it does look like a good enough game to pick up for sure!
