Hands On: The war between the Autobots and the Decepticons continue as we see the Fall of Cybertron. Jeffrey Harris checks in with his exclusive E3 preview of the Xbox 360 version of the game.
One of the more exciting playable demos for me at E3 2012 was Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. I got to try at the Xbox 360 of the game, and being a huge transformers game as well as a fan of War for Cybetron, I was super psyched to check this one out. High Moon Studios and Activision displayed the demo which had several playable levels. Again you can play as both Autobots and Decepticons throughout the game. The Bumblebee demo takes you from the beginning of the game. The Autobots are preparing to evacuate Cybertron on the famous Ark ship as the planet has become uninhabitable due to the war waged by the Decepticons and their leader Megatron. The Decepticons attack you on the Ark and things quickly descend into chaos. So you start the game as Bumblebee to fight off the Decepticons invading the ship and deliver a crucial part to keep the Ark from being destroyed.
The gameplay again focuses on run and gun style third person shooting. All characters have their basic gun and also a melee attack. The Cybertron games High Moon Studios have made really do a great job of making you feel like a transformer and Fall of Cybetron is no exception. You can pick up some heavier weapons along the way as the Decepticons are trying to tear apart the Ark with giant mechanical tentacles from their own ship. The demo stage ends as you reach Optimus Prime and Megatron fighting on the hull of the ship. Megatron is about to strike down Optimus (once again voiced by Peter Cullen) before Bumblebee jumps in the way, taking a direct shot to the chest. Optimus recovers and cradles the wounded Bumblebee as the story flashes back into the preceding several days leading up to the evacuation of Cybertron.
New transformers appearing as playable characters in the game's story campaign are Jazz, Combaticon Vortex, and of course the incontestable Dinobot Grimlock. Grimlock was my favorite playable demo stage in the game. He's voiced by the original Grimlock voice actor Gregg Berger. In Grimlock's stage he infiltrates an Insecticon hive in order to save his imprisoned Dinobot comrades. Now this is a bit of a different Grimlock from the original series. He's gruff but he talks in fairly understandable, complete sentences along with the other Dinobots. Apparently these might not even be the same Dinobots from the original series, and apparently this is a big part of the story campaign. Grimlock fights through the Insecticons and Grimlock is for the most part an all melee attack character with his awesome sword. He has no long range attacks like the other Autobots and transformers. He does have a cool energy shield though. When Grimlock is finally able to transform into his T-Rex mode it is an amazing moment to be able to smash the Insections and breathe Godzilla-esque fire at your enemies.
Graphics and level design look extremely rich and detailed. I love all the art and design style of this game series as it evokes a sort of more traditional and classic Transformer style much more so than the god awful designs of the Michael Bay movies which I never cared for. The Autobots and Decepticons actually look similar to their classic versions, just more modern and technical without being huge departures from the design or like twisted up vomited metal as they do in the movies. The High Moon Studios developers also informed me Metroplex is appearing in the game and I believe you can play as the fully combined form of Bruticus which I can't wait to do if that's true. Another Transformers: Fall of Cybertron hits PS3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC on August 28 in North America and Europe on August 31.
