E3 2012: LucasArts Exploring Grittier Side of Star Wars
Posted by Adam Larck on 06.11.2012

LucasArts is keeping extremely tight-lipped about the next entry in the Star Wars universe.

In fact, the demo shown for Star Wars 1313 didn't even feature the main character, using a placeholder model instead. The team stated they did not want to get too in-depth with the plot right now, saving the big reveals until later.

What we do know is that the game will be one of the darkest entries in the Star Wars gaming universe. Taking place on Coruscant's Level 1313, the game will have you controlling a bounty hunter trying to make his way out of the underbelly of the planet. Because of the location the game takes place, the developers said that there won't be Jedi residing down there, meaning that the Force won't be a factor.

As far as the gameplay goes, the game's a mixture of a third-person shooter with cover mechanics and a platformer. The small bit of gameplay we saw had the character jumping around a destroyed ship using wall-climbing and other acrobatic abilities.

Another feature that will be in the game that wasn't shown off too much was the gear the bounty hunter will have. The developers know how big gear is for a bounty hunter and plan on showing it off as much as possible. All that was shown at this time was a standing grenade and a pulsating one that slowed down enemies, almost similar to a stun grenade.

While only a few minutes of both types of gameplay were shown off, LucasArts did detail a few other points of the gameplay they're hoping to accomplish during development. The team stated that they're trying to not put the exciting moments in cutscenes. They know how much gamers love playing those moments themselves, so they would rather let players experience it firsthand while seeing cutscenes that expand the storyline through dialogue or other means.

Also, the team did add, to the relief of many in the room, that there will be no quick-time events. They plan on letting a player's skill dictate what happens during fights and around the world.

While the game's still in early alpha, the graphics look impressive already on the small set piece they've made. Transition between a cutscene and gameplay is so fluid that the only thing that gives it away is when the HUD with ammo appears. Plus, the game kept a constant 30 frames per second throughout the demo, meaning the action looked smooth as well.

My only concern is the possible development cycle this game may have if all the cutscenes are to be as smooth as what is shown. However, with the multiple teams that LucasArts has working on the game, plus their previous experience with other forms of media, they could still have no problem getting this out without a problem.

No release window was given, but look for more information about the game to start coming in the upcoming months.
