Super Paper Mario (GC) Preview
Posted by Ashish on 07.28.2006

Nintendo looks to be wrapping up Mario's run on the Gamecube with Super Paper Mario, due out October 9th.

The game will have standard 2D platforming gameplay with Paper Mario 2D style and a little bit of RPG elements mixed in. Much of the game will follow the old-school Mario side-scrolling formula but allows for 3D elements as well.

The game also allows for Mario to be zoomed to super sizes ala DS. The more star power he gets, the bigger he gets, eventually being the massive 8-pixel Mario that can smash through stages like in New Super Mario Bros.

Princess Peach and Bowser are also playable characters and gamers can switch to them on the fly.

The 3D elements are interesting because gamers will be able to press the R button to change a side-scrolling level to 3D. Everything from the 2D world becomes 3D but being in the 3D world drains power and thus can only be done for short spurts. The main focus of the 3D world is to solve certain puzzles (for example, in 2D a block could be in the way, but in 3D you can just go right around it).
