Atlus brings us only the second game in the popular and long running Super Robot Taisen series to be released in America.
The Super Robot Taisen franchise started out on the Game Boy in 1991. Since the beginning, all of the entries in the series have been turn-based strategy games that featured characters and mecha units from several Anime and Manga titles. The games also featured storylines from said titles which were modified enough to make them fit into the general storyline. As the years progressed, more titles were included, adding their characters, mechs, and storylines into the mix. Some of these series include the likes of Full Metal Panic!, Gundam, Martian Successor Nadesico, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Rahxephon, and Macross. In addition, Banipresto, the company that developed the games, brought more to the table by including their own original characters and mechs. Unfortunately, because of the licensing nightmare associated with bringing all of these series into one game, the Super Robot Taisen games never saw the light of day in America. This all changed earlier this year when Atlus brought Super Robot Taisen:Original Generation to our shores in August. While not containing any of the licenses the franchise is known for, the game was able to stand on its own using the original characters, mechs, and storylines used throughout the previous games in the series. Now, only a few months later, Atlus has unleashed the sequel - Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2.
Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2 follows the ATX team from the first game. Kyosuke, Excellen, and Bullet return and are joined by Lamia Loveless. The story takes place a few months after the events in the first game. Despite the threat of alien invasion, what remains of the Divine Crusaders, along with several people in the government, wish to stir up trouble. In addition, other forces and entities are at work trying to throw the human race into chaos.
SRT:OG2 features over forty hours of turn-based combat. As with the other games in the series, players can start their turn by issuing a spirit command to enhance their abilities. After, they are given the chance to move their mech to an appropriate area on the map. If the enemy is within range, the player can choose to attack. The enemy can either counter-attack or defend itself. Once the player has given orders to all of his or her units, the roles are switched and the computer has a chance to go first while the player is given a chance to counter attack or defend.
Each mission has its own goals which must be accomplished before the player can proceed further. Experienced players are often given a chance to put their skills to use by trying to complete special conditions called Battle Mastery conditions.
Before and after missions players can upgrade their mechs, add parts, and change weapons as well as teach the pilots new skills by using earnings and Pilot Points gained during battle.
Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2 was released On November 14, 2006. If you are looking for a portable turn-based strategy game featuring mechs, an involving storyline, and interesting characters and dialog, this game might be up your alley.
