Hands-On: We check out MoH2 at EA's Studio Showcase!
This past week, 411mania had a chance to visit the EA headquarters in Redwood Shores, CA to preview some of their upcoming titles. One of the first games we had a chance to get our hands on was Medal of Honor Heroes 2 for the Nintendo Wii. At first glance, the game looked very pretty. The graphics stood out among one of the best looking Wii games that EA had on display and it ran in 16:9 widescreen and 60 fps.
Medal of Honor Heroes 2 has three different game types which are Arcade Mode, Single Player Campaign and Multiplayer. Arcade Mode was the first mode that I had a chance to play. This mode resembles an arcade shooter in that you are on rails as the game guides you through the various levels and you are simply in charge of blowing the hell out of the incoming enemy. The Nintendo Wii Zapper (name subject to change) was on display here as the game will support it for this mode. The game controlled very well as the reticule moved pretty accurately. The arcade mode has different gestures than what you'd see in the single player or multiplayer mode. To shoot, you simply pull on the Zapper's trigger while snapping it in a downward motion will reload your weapon. If you want to pick up a health pack, you shoot at it and moving the analog stick down will allow you to duck. It's a very simple game mode that should make it appealing to the casual crowd as well as those looking to get their Rambo on without playing the campaign mode.
The single player mode will take you through various locales and will take you roughly eight hours to complete. There are some gestures that are unique to the single player mode which uses the Wii remote and nunchuck such as disarming a mine or tuning a radio. You'll also have different weapons to use such as grenades.
We spoke briefly (but did not get to try) about the online multiplayer. Medal of Honor Heroes 2 will be the first to offer 32 online multiplayer on the Wii and on any other console to date. I was assured that the online matches would run at 60 frames per second as well and you'll be using EA Nation for the online structure. MHH2 will not feature split-screen multiplayer so you'll have to get online to gun down friends and foes. The resources were all given to online play as the developers felt it would be an important feature to have.
Though I only had a chance to play Arcade Mode during our visit, I'm hopeful that this will be one of the premier first person shooters on the Wii and gamers will get a chance to have their online fix that Metroid did not provide.
