WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009 (Xbox 360) Preview
Posted by Chris Lansdell on 09.23.2008

Five years ago, if someone had told me that wrestling video games would become mainstream fighting games, and that they would be accepted as such, I would have laughed loudly. Then I would have gone back to tweaking the eyebrows on my create-a-wrestler to make them just…like…Macho Man's. Yet here we are, 5 years later, staring both the end of 2008 and the newest instalment of WWE Smackdown vs Raw right in the face. THQ's wildly popular wrestling franchise is back with the 2009 incarnation promising all sorts of upgrades and changes.

Will SvR 2009 put a chokehold on the competition?

Most fans of the genre look first to the story mode. Recent versions of the game have been panned for having only one path through the story mode, and only one title to chase on each show. The problem was partly rectified last year with the introduction of star ratings for your matches, the goal of becoming a Legend, and non-linear storylines. This year they look to have gone even further. The story mode has always had the ultimate goal of reaching the main event of WrestleMania, and the trend continues this year with added depth. The major change is the introduction of co-op storylines for the first time. This also opens up the opportunity to win the tag team titles in the storyline, which is something that has been asked for several times.

There's a story here. I believe it contains the word "Ow".

Tag teams are a focus of the latest episode in the SvR series. There are more double-team moves and finishers, the possibility to build team chemistry, momentum and other tag team attributes with your partner, and a new "hot tag" feature, which provides a boost to the incoming partner when executed. Details on how this will work are not yet available, but it will likely involve a stored finisher.

Hot tag imminent!

The other big draw of the series is the create-a-wrestler (CAW) mode. There are entire websites devoted to telling people how to create their favourite stars using the CAW editor, from moves to hairstyles to forearm-to-bicep proportion. That's all staying, but a major addition has been made in that we now have the ability to create our own finishers. From what I've seen, you will be able to create a sequence of steps in your finisher (up to 10), combining set-up moves with taunts and other moves. The choice of moves at each step is tied to the one you chose before, so as to make the move flow nicely. For example, if step 7 is to lift your opponent up in a suplex, then step 8 can't be something that doesn't follow from it. This is something I've been crying out for in wrestling games, and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

What? I'm a wrestling geek.

The online functionality of the game has also been tweaked and improved, enabling downloadable content and better online play. One of the knocks on the series has been that the rosters are often outdated by the time the game hits shelves, and while it seems unlikely that the online updates could be used to remove someone from the game, they could certainly be used to add new wrestlers, clothing, titles, tag teams and so on.

November 9 is the day. From the video trailers online, this iteration of the franchise is looking to be the best yet.

Create a finisher? Somebody smash me in the face with a rock and wake me up when this game has been released.

2nd pic is EPIC

I've always thought the create a wrestler has too many options when it comes to body type etc. I mean who cares what eye brows your guy has or if there forearms are 15 inches rather than 10?

And it's good to see that Triple H doesn't look weak in that pic. What a superstar.

Just a shame that he is brandishing a weapon. The E isn't going to like that AT ALL.

Any news on the wii version? Does it feature the same story mode this year?

More people than you think care about that kind of stuff. When it comes to Create A Wrestler you can NEVER have too many options.

I have a feeling this "create a finisher" thing will end up disappointing people. There will be people thinking it'll let you create some puro or indy finishers but I don't think that's what its for.

Emphasis on tag teams? Tag matches are usually THE WORST part of these games, so I'm a little worried about that.

You know, you can just skip those options and leave them for the rest of us, right? It may not matter to you, but I like having an almost photo realistic 93-era HBK or Ted DiBiase. Based on the Caws.ws (or whatever the url is) site, a lot of other people do too.

I just hope they fix commentary this year so that it doesn't you know...suck.

I'd like to hear all new commentary, not the same stuff we've been listening to for years.

I definitely hope the Wii version is acceptable this year. Last year, my wife got me the game, and I've never been more disappointed than when I went through it and saw how much it was missing.

At the very least, give the Wii a story mode this year! Or, hell, if it's that much trouble to do, don't even bother to release on the Wii. I'll buy the XBox 360 version instead.

I guarantee you that this game is gonna suck, just like the last two did. The roster's probably going to be like, 10 people.

What about a story mode for CAWs? If that's not in the game, then this game is complete garbage.

Posted By: swiftychampleone (Guest)  on September 23, 2008 at 10:32 AM

These additions are all great. But why can't they have commentary like NHL, NBA or Pro Evo Soccer. They manage to do it and it makes the game that much better. Until then i guess i have to keep on waiting instead of buying the same crap over and over again.

hpefully you can make a canadian destroyer

Two things, 1. I really hope that they do have a Diva story mode. They should deserve to have their own storied road to the women's title, and 2. Just a personal favorite of mine but I'd love for them to put the old Brood Entrance in there as an unlockable. That would be sweet!

How does it play? And am I the only one who thinks they looks like WWE action figures? Anyway should be better then last years disappointment

tag matches in the smackdown series has traditionally been pure garbage due to poor ai and the propensity of the smackdown engine to generate a winner in under 5 minutes. no smackdown match by computers last longer than 5 minutes, unless it is an ironman match. good tag wrestling can be found in no mercy, fire pro wrestling returns, or all star pro wrestling 3. they will all generate simulated matches that will last upwards of 15-25 minutes. almost on the standards of big ROH or puro tag matches

Eh...can't be worse that last year's.

you ignorant idiot,if you didnt know the roster is going to be over 50 wrestlers, why dont you read some info before you come up with stupid things like that and until you people play the game(jajajaja get it?)you cant say that it sucks,so dont be idiots

And once you actually watch the game trailers, the game looks to play exactly the same. Create a move is going to be worthless when the game is not worth playing

Posted By: Guest#3510 (Guest)  on September 24, 2008 at 01:29 PM

The gameplay will be the same as previous games. The Road to Wrestlemania (Story Mode) is only 3 months of shows with 6 characters. Create a Finisher is only from the front groggy position and all of them will do the same damage regardless of what the move is.

im sorry but wrestling games have been going down hill for years...it really stinks but i feel as tho the graphics get a little better each year but the overall game play never really improves..there just not exciting i think its because wrestling is no longer exciting..not like it use to be..cage fighting is the future..wrestling needs to step it up
