Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection Preview (PS3, Xbox 360)
Posted by Armando Rodriguez on 01.24.2009
Over 40 Sega classics are coming back to a system near you!
I am convinced Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 was developed with the intention of making Wii Virtual Console fans cry. I mean, Sega is promising more than 40 Genesis classics and a few Master System and arcade unlockables for around $30. People that paid $6 a game in the Virtual Console have to be crying right now.
So what's inside Ultimate Genesis Collection? Here is the list so far: (All game are Genesis titles unless otherwise stated)
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Alien Storm
Alien Syndrome arcade
Altered Beast
Bonanza Bros.
Beyond Oasis
Columns
Comix Zone
Congo Bongo arcade
Decap Attack
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Dynamite Headdy
E-SWAT: City Under Siege
Ecco the Dolphin
Ecco: The Tides of Time
Fantasy Zone arcade
Fatal Labyrinth
Flicky
Gain Ground
Golden Axe
Golden Axe II
Golden Axe III
Golden Axe Warrior (Sega Master Systerm)
Kid Chameleon
Phantasy Star sega master system
Phantasy Star II
Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
Ristar
Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force
Shining Force II: Ancient Sealing
Shinobi (arcade)
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Sonic 3D Blast
Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic Spinball
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Space Harrier (arcade)
Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage 2
Streets of Rage 3
Super Thunder Blade
Vectorman
Vectorman 2
Zaxxon (arcade)
That is a pretty impressive list. However, it is yet unconfirmed if the "lock-on" feature of Sonic & Knuckles (that allowed you to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic 2 as Knuckles and Blue Sphere) will work in the game. Outside of this, you get the entire 16-bit series of Sonic the Hedgehog, the entire Phantasy Star series, both Shining Force titles and a lot more. All the games will feature graphics updated to high-definition as well as trophies on the PS3 and achievements on the Xbox 360. Glaring omissions from the list are a couple of Sega published 16-bit classics, most notably Gunstar Heroes and Eternal Champions. Also, getting Sonic CD and Shining Force CD could have been a treat, since it is highly unlikely that we get a Sega CD collection someday.
We will keep you updated on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection as it comes closer to release. In the mean time, check out 20 screenshots of the various games in action.
Man this is gonna rule All the streets of rage, sonic, golden axe and Phantasy Star games on 1 cd. I would pay full retail for these alone the rest is just extra.

Where the hell's Revenge of Shinobi? It always gets the short end of the stick on these Genesis collections.

I think they have screenshots for Revenge of Shinobi over at the game's official page. Hopefully it will be one of the yet unnamed unlockables.

All those Phantasy Star and Shining Force games...I'll probably have to get this.

The unlockable games have been announced, a few cool ones but no revenge of shinobi. In fact no megadrive games at all.
This is a great collection, would have been nice without altered beast, space harrier, flicky and alex kid... again. Seriously they could have put others in there. Alex kid in shinobi world, wonderboy, eternal champions, landstalker, shining force CD. But hopefully these can be sorted if there's a sequel.

Heck, I just wanted to play Shining Force CD so badly that I would pay for it as DLC. Also I own Landstalker and another Sega RPG, Light Crusader...those would have been awesome as well.

Comix Zone alone sold me. Sux how the lock on feature does not work would have been the best sega collection but now it is a great collection.

Really?? I just seen xplay on G4 give this game 4 out of 5 stars. $30 for old ass games that have been available to play on any PC within the last 10 yrs for free??? Come on, other than the acheivements/trophies, what is the big deal? Oh, they'll be in HD? The same was Sonic 1 is in HD on xbox arcade? Still looks like shit, so you might as well do the right (but shady) thing of downloading any genesis emulator & getting any game you want.
Heck, even the old gameshark(or proaction..I don't remember which one it was) PS2 came right out of the retail package with PCGEN on it! All you had to do was burn whatever roms you wanted to a CD & you could play them right on any PS2. No mod chip or flip top needed.
Now Sega why don't you focus on something a little more challenging to emulate like a Saturn or Dreamcast compilation???
