Product Review: Logitechís Z320 Speaker System
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 02.16.2010

The Z320s

While I have a pretty well put together PC at home, I tend to do a lot of my work on my laptop and subsequently spend more time on it than the rig at my desk. Given that Iím on it all the time, I find myself listening to music quite a bit and even doing a little bit of gaming. While my laptop gets the job done, one area where itís sorely lacking in performance is its sound. Granted, most people donít expect much out of their tiny built-in laptop speakers and neither do I, but itís nice to be able to use something better which is where Logitechís Z320 speaker system comes into play.

The speakers come with a nice glossy finish with a well built knob for volume in the front and a side jack for headphone use. They fell well made too as they have a bit of heft to them and donít appear to be some cheaply concocted speakers that could break from a little tip-over. At 10 watts, they dish out some pretty good sound, specifically with mid to high frequencies. Having played a variety of Michael Jackson music, along with some hip hop, I was pleased with how well the speakers performed; capturing the vocals quite nicely. Of course, itís not a full test unless I dig into some gaming which is why I pulled out Battlefield 2, Fable and Battlefield 2142 Ė yes I like Battlefield, so what?

Again, the sound effects, ranging from a magazine full of ammo to tanks blowing stuff up and various battle sequences, I felt fully immersed with what I was experiencing. The speakers claim they have 360-degree sound, so I made sure to place them in different locations and positions and the results were pretty much the same. Regardless of where I put them, I managed to get quality sound.

If I had one complaint, it would be the lack of a subwoofer. Though they do give you a little bit of bass, thereís no sub to give it that extra pop especially when playing them very loud. At extremely loud volumes, I got a bit of a crackle when my source had a lot of bass; whether it was from music or from a game. It wouldíve been nice to at least have the ability to play with the bass/treble to fine tune it but alas, it wasnít an option.

The 411

All in all, the speakers are pretty good, and I even used them on a few occasions on my desktop just to give them more play time. If youíre searching for a good pair of speakers that wonít break the bank (at $59.99) while still getting your moneyís worth, the Z320s are a solid option. Just be weary of turning them up too loud when thereís plenty of bass expected.
