Soul Calibur IV (PS3) Review
Posted by Gregory McDougal on 08.13.2008

Publisher: Namco/Bandai
Developer: Namco/Bandai
Genre: Fighting
Players 1-2 (Offline and Online)

When it comes to 3-D fighting games, the Soul Calibur series are some of the best. Ever since its introduction as Soul Edge (or Blade) on the Playstation 1 in 1997, it has earned the title as the “premiere weapons based fighter.” Many, including myself, consider it Tekken with weapons. Coincidentally, Namco made both. There have been a few weapons-based fighters released to give the game some competition, however, none came close to matching the game’s depth or speed. Before Soul Edge, I loved the Tekken series, but once it was released, those games played second fiddle.

While Soul Blade put the series on the map for Sony’s first system, it wasn’t until 1999 with the launch of the Sega Dreamcast that its sequel Soul Calibur truly brought the series to new heights. It took everything its predecessor had and amplified it by ten. The graphics were amazing (even to this day they still look good), the gameplay was deep and the replay value was remarkable. To this day it is still considered one of the best fighting games of all time. That game (along with Resident Evil: Code Veronica) was the deciding factor for purchasing Sega’s short-lived system. Four years later, with the Playstation 2, XBOX and Gamecube already released came Soul Calibur 2. It was available on all three systems with each version receiving an exclusive character. PS2 owners received Tekken alum Heihachi, XBOX got Spawn, while Gamecube owners got the chance to play as Link from The Legend of Zelda series. While it was for all intents and purposes a better game than the original, it didn’t quite have the same impact.

Then there was Soul Calibur 3. In my eyes it was the weak installment in the series. It wasn’t a bad game by any means because it introduced the much needed “character creation mode.” However, at this point it seemed the blade was beginning to dull. Now here we are with Soul Calibur 4 for the Playstation 3. Now that Namco has entered the stage of history on next-gen, has it regained its luster? Yes it has.

Gameplay

The core of Soul Calibur 4 has remained the same; fighting various opponents to reach the final boss in a number of modes, and this game has a variety of them. There are three modes for single play. First, there is the story mode, which chronicles each characters quest in search of either the mighty sword “Soul Calibur” or the devastating “Soul Edge.” The story mode is a bit on the lame side, especially when compared to how Namco handled it on the Dreamcast version. The endings are nice to watch though. Then there is the standard Arcade mode. However, the solo mode that you will be playing the most is the new “Tower of Souls.” This mode has you ascending 40+ floors fighting various opponents, while performing certain task to earn treasure for your created character (more on that in a bit). The tower also has you descending once you ascend at least 20 floors, and those challenges can be a bit tougher. Another addition to the series is the ability to destroy a character’s armor. There are three mini bars on the screen next to the character’s health. Each time a character continuously blocks, a bar will disappear along with a piece of clothing. Once that person looses all three bars, he or she will be susceptible to that person’s ultimate attack, which means instant K.O. This is a hit and miss feature. While I like the feature of characters clothing being removed (just the female characters), the fact that you have to deplete all three bars to do a finisher makes it frustrating. For the record, I have only been able to pull off one finisher.

Talim is ready for some fightin'.

As stated earlier, there is a create-a-character mode similar to part three, but more detailed. It seemed Namco put more thought into the level of customization the player could put forth for his or her character. From the type of skills you want to clothing to even your fighting style, the developers got it covered. Also, new is the addition of leveling up your character depending on whose character style you chose for that person. For example, say you chose Taki for your character’s style and you use her a lot. The more you play as either Taki or your character, the more extras you unlock such as new weapons, outfits and new skills. It’s a great concept that amps the replay value a few notches.

Speaking of replay value, now its time to mention what many fans of the series have been waiting for…ONLINE PLAY!!! That’s right, for the first time in the Soul Calibur series; you can see how you fare against players from around the world in the comfort of your own home. Not only can you take the original characters online, but your own creations as well. While there aren’t many online options, what’s there is good enough. I was playing into the wee hours of the morning just online. I think that’s all there is to mention about Soul Calibur…. Oh, how could I forget about another addition…STAR WARS. Yes people, the empire has invaded the “stage of history” with the inclusion of three characters. Since Yoda is exclusive to the XBOX 360, I will only discuss Darth Vader and his apprentice from the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. While Vader is a bit slow compared to other characters, he is fun to use and just as balanced as the main roster. He is not someone I would take online for constant use, but fun nonetheless. The Apprentice on the other hand, while a great character to use, is cheap when fighting against him. Not only does he use projectiles, he uses them while floating in the air throwing his light saber.

And so is he.

Graphics

Visually this game is great. Even though the max output for the Playstation 3 version is 720p, its still one of the best looking fighters around. From the environments to the character models, this is a visual treat. I can only imagine what Namco will do for Tekken 6 once it hits consoles.

Sound

What you see is about as equally good as what you hear. The weapon clashes are great as well as the sound when bodies hit the ground. I will even go as far to say I didn’t even have a problem with English voice-overs, as cheesy as they can be (the option to change it to Japanese is still present). However, there is something that’s got to go or should I say someone…that damn voice announcer. For a decade he has been in every installment saying the lamest statements such as “The Gods have granted you a sword to cut your own path,” or “she rides the winds of the east to make her way to destiny.” Namco, get rid of it for the next game, please.

The force is strong with this one

The 411

With online play, character customization and that balance of gameplay for casual button mashers and hardcore players, it’s hard for me not to recommend this game. Although the amount of unlockables have tremendously been cut down, especially since its Dreamcast iteration, the soul still burns brightly with this one and players will be having fun with this game for months and years to come.

Graphics9.0Great visuals put this one ahead of the fighting competition. Soul Calibur in next-gen. Enough said.411 Elite Award
Gameplay8.8It does not re-invent the wheel, but nevertheless it is the best Soul Calibur since the original for the Dreamcast.
Sound8.9Great sound, lousy voice announcer.
Lasting Appeal9.6Character customization and online play will keep players busy long after the single player modes are through.
Fun Factor 9.3If you have friends this is the game for you.
Overall9.1   [  Amazing ]  legend

I personally have to disagree with your overall score. Whilst it is a good game, you can't say that the developers put much thought into single player play. Story mode and Arcade mode are lame and will last you about 10 minutes. Tower of souls is good but can be quite infuriating in parts. I feel that they should have included more single player modes or at least make the story mode longer with branching paths and different endings. Overall, I'd have given the game about an 8 or so. Good review though.

P.S. The Apprentice is 7 different shades of cheap.

Eh, I have to question the validity of your review, seeing as how your description of how to get a critical finish is incorrect. It has nothing to do with armor remaining. You are only vulnerable to critical finishes when your soul gauge is depleted (flashing red). While in most cases you will have lost all armor at this point, the critical finish depends on the gauge, not the armor.

You also failed to mention the loss of the ability to soul charge your character, which was a huge part of playing certain characters (nightmare) in SC III.

In addition, this is the first game in the series to have a tag mechanic, which mind numbingly only works offline.

I'd give it an 8, as it is still a very good fighting game, but a lot of the additions (critical finishes, falling armor) seem too much like bell and whistle type things devoid of any true substance. Story mode is beyond unacceptable for a game that has been in dev this long. Character creation is about the only thing they nearly got right, though they really could have taken a page from oblivion and given us a super detailed facial generator.

It's a fine fighting game (duh), but looking beyond character creation, graphics, and game play, this game feels rushed (which it was not).

I respect both of your opinions, but I will disagree. I found that almost all of the single player modes to be satisfying. The only exception would be the criminially short story mode; however, you still have the much longer arcade mode.

All in all, I think it is a worthy addition to the Soul Calibur franchise. There may be additions/subtractions that will frustrate long time fans (like myself), but the overall package is not something that can be brushed aside.

In short, I was satisfied with the game, and the overall score. A fan should not runaway from this entry, it is a worthy edition to the franchise.

Maybe you meant the Tower, because the Arcade mode is about 10 minutes long.

The Arcade mode is typical. You go through 10 opponents/ending. It is the same as Tekken, SF2, etc. The Story Mode, on the otherhand, is only five fights. Unless, the 360 version is DRASTICALLY different from the PS3 version.... :-/

Five fights, against multiple opponents. In the end they both work out to being about 10 minutes of gameplay.

I "undershot" the number? Dave - I just used your number assuming you'd be correct. Obviously, I should have known better judging by your history.

The two games are, aside from a single character exclusive to each, identical in terms of content.

It doesn't even matter - my point was that both Arcade and Story mode are extremely short. You're just trying to turn it into one of your fanboy rants.

I will give you a breakdown of your comment crayola-style.

"I "undershot" the number? Dave - I just used your number assuming you'd be correct. Obviously, I should have known better judging by your history."
--You admit that you have no idea of what you are talking about? You have no other reason to chime in besides to disagree and make a personal attack? *slow clap* That one was for you.

"The two games are, aside from a single character exclusive to each, identical in terms of content."
--Thank you, Captain Obvious. Wow! I didn't know they were exclusive. I thought the fact that Vader is displayed only on the PS3 version meant that it was exclusive. Well, thank you for clearing that up for me.

"It doesn't even matter - my point was that both Arcade and Story mode are extremely short. You're just trying to turn it into one of your fanboy rants."
--Now, it is a fanboy rant? Is that the best you can do? You cannot state factual information. You only say that it is fanboy rants. Good job, partner. Way to show us Americans!

The fact of the matter is this, it is a FIGHTING GAME! How long do you want the Arcade mode to be? Are you new? Since it states A-R-C-A-D-E, that alone allows a person to assume that it reflects the arcade experience. The last time time I checked, the arcade is there to make M-O-N-E-Y. The creators do not want the person playing the game for hours.

How ****ing long did you want it? Jesus.

"You admit that you have no idea of what you are talking about?"

No, I admitted that you had no idea. I couldn't recall offhand if it was five or six fights but assumed you did.

Again though, that doesn't really matter. The point - which you completely avoided here - is that the mode wasn't, as you said, considerably longer than Story Mode at all.

"You have no other reason to chime in besides to disagree and make a personal attack?"

I didn't want people basing their decisions of your claims, as they were clearly wrong.

"Thank you, Captain Obvious. Wow! I didn't know they were exclusive."

You were the one saying you didn't know if the 360 version was the same, weren't you? Yeah, thought so. I tried to make it very clear, so you couldn't do your normal thing - you know, where you try to twist everything I say and...oh yeah, exactly what you just did again.

"Now, it is a fanboy rant? Is that the best you can do? You cannot state factual information. You only say that it is fanboy rants."

You were the one that keeps pushing the agenda, dude. You were also the one to get it wrong.

"The fact of the matter is this, it is a FIGHTING GAME!

Jesus."

More than 10 minutes is too much to expect? And again - that wasn't even the point. Stop trying to muddy the waters with these pathetic attempts to make it personal.

You were wrong, and I corrected you. Then you flipped out - as usual. You should really work on your ability to take criticism.

Dave you're starting to look pretty stupid here. Trying to turn everything he says into some kindo f attack is making you look more and more like a fanboy.

You were the one that said "The only exception would be the criminially short story mode; however, you still have the much longer arcade mode."

Arcade mode is not longer than story mode. I don't know how many fights there are but who cares? Quit being such an idiot for whatever your cause is.

Troll,

1)Let me get this straight, you tried to form a rebuttal and you didn't have the information? Wow! That must be a special moment for you.

2) And your correction was right? Pfft...please.

3) No offense but are you honestly that stupid? Do you HONESTLY think I was confused on who was exclusive? I check ALL the gaming websites (usually the websites that PAY their writers). I was being sarcastic.

4) You think I'm pushing an agenda? You are the person that is featured on www.xbox360fanboys.com (which is part of joystiq). Hell, you have a website dedicated to your 360 exploits. You need to quit projecting your reality on me, thank you.

5) Let me get this straight, I was wrong and you corrected me? Let us not forget that you provided inaccurate information. Everything is alright. He was RIGHT all along.

If you are going to correct me, you need to use correct informaton next time. It just makes you look like a idiot.

LOL,

If you do not know, then how can you form an opinion?

Posted By: lateralus81 (Registered)  on August 16, 2008 at 10:44 AM

For the last time, Dave - all I said was that the Arcade mode is only about 10 minutes worth of gameplay, roughly the same as Story mode. I didn't know how many fights it was, but that doesn't really matter as that wasn't the point.

Keep up your crazy ranting though. It's entertaining.

Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered)  on August 16, 2008 at 01:28 PM

Do you even know the definition of the word rant? Jesus. I think you are a bit crazy. You must be hearing voices, man. Since Canada provides free health care, you may want to see a shrink, because you cannot hear my voice. If the words are "talking" to you.....what else is "talking" to you? Little puppies, the dead, furniture? What? Inquiring minds want to know.

Posted By: lateralus81 (Registered)  on August 16, 2008 at 01:55 PM

You're posting multi-point diatribes in response to me pointing out the Arcade mode can easily be completed in 10 minutes...and you say that's not ranting?

Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered)  on August 16, 2008 at 02:17 PM

Nope. I was breaking down and answering EVERY one of your points. It is called being precise.

Posted By: lateralus81 (Registered)  on August 16, 2008 at 02:40 PM

Everyone just shut the fuck up, can't we all just agree that this game got overhyped and didn't deliver?

Posted By: Guest#3882 (Guest)  on August 22, 2008 at 04:27 PM

Right...

I guess that you didn't get the message. God still has your brain. He was upset that he rushed you out sooo quickly, and he wanted to make amends.

Seeing your this response, it seems to be a very urgent matter. You need to call God ASAP!
