Product Review: Logitech’s Play Gear Pocket Lite (DS/PSP)

Convenient cases take the fear out of dropping your handheld.
To protect and serve
I’m sure some of you have already been there. You’re walking along with your DS or PSP in hand and BAM – your handheld hits the ground. Yeah it’s painful to see and if you’re lucky nothing too destructive happened but if you’re one of the unfortunate souls who’s handheld just broke apart, then you probably wished you had a case to protect it. Well enter Logitech with their Play Gear Pocket Lite.
The case comes in two flavors; one for the Nintendo DS Lite, and another for the PSP (2000 series). Both cases have a polycarbonate construction around the rubbery material encasing the handheld. It’s quite sturdy and after purposely dropping it on the ground with both cases, neither of them broke or damaged my units. There is a secure snap on the front end to close the cases so you don’t have to worry about it popping open – that is of course unless you drop it from your roof in which case you’re an idiot. Both cases also have what Logitech calls a “Play-in-case design” which means that there’s no need to ever take your units out of the cases. They provide access to sound controls, the headphone jack, any other connector that it may have. Also you can insert the UMD or DS game card without taking the unit out. The DS version also has four slots on the upper part of the case that allows you to pop in DS games to carry around. Since the inner part of the case is a sort of rubbery/plasticky material, it fits quite snug. Since the DS is closed, there are two small indentations on each side of the bottom case so that you can easily lift the DS open. The PSP case conveniently fits Sony's 2200 mAh Extended Life Battery as well. Both cases, particularly for the PSP provide much needed cover to avoid direct sunlight as well.
The cases come with two templates included; one for the top and one for the bottom part of the case so that you can customize your own skins and fit them perfectly.
With the PSP case retailing for $14.99 while the DS version goes for $19.99 given the extra storage for games, the Logitech Play Gear Pocket Lite is an excellent case that doesn’t increase the size of the handheld. It’s simple enough to insert while providing very sturdy protection for those accidents waiting to happen. If you’ve got a $20 laying around and don’t yet own a case, then these are well worth the money spent.
