Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (PS3) Review

Mortal Kombat’s history cannot be denied. Ever since the original was released in arcades Mortal Kombat has been a crucial part of the video game industry. Hell, it’s often credited for the formation of the ESRB. Personally, Mortal Kombat 2 and Mortal Kombat Trilogy stand out as the best of the franchise. I seriously want to ask the folks at Midway why they keep porting Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 to consoles such as XBLA but they constantly forget about the far superior Mortal Kombat Trilogy *a lot more characters, more moves, more fatalities, ect*. Honestly, I highly doubt it would cost Midway a lot of money to make a new version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Hell, take the existing game, clean up the sprites, and add in more characters and my friends and I would gladly pay whatever amount of money Midway would charge for it *and I think we’re all aware of Midway’s financial state at this point*. But we don’t live in a perfect world and so we are left with Mortal Kombat vs. DC. How does the game hold up? Let’s find out.



Graphics


The god of thunder vs… some douche who uses lame lightning attacks.


I must say, considering how bad the graphics have been in all of the previous 3D MK games I am quite surprised at how MK vs. DC turned out. MK vs. DC sports some pretty nice looking character models *although not superb* and while I do not find the backgrounds all that interesting, at least they also look good. Animations are rather smooth and besides a few minor problems *mainly with things like Free Fall Kombat* MK vs. DC is nothing to sneeze at. Of course some people will be pissed that The Joker doesn’t look like Heath Ledger but in my opinion it’s not that big of a deal. Most of the characters look good and sport some nice moves to boot *minus Wonder Woman, I hate her*.



Gameplay


Looks like even Superheroes use performance enhancing drugs.


Well, MK vs. DC is a fighting game. If a fighting game doesn’t control well, it’s bound to fail. While MK vs. DC won’t set the world on fire, it’s not that bad. Some characters have moves that are fun to pull off *Green Lantern* while others are just clunky and stupid *Shao Kahn*. MK controls like any other fighter, face buttons are attacks, L1 and R1 block, and R2 and L2 are reserved for special situations *Close Quarters Kombat and Rage*. When I first heard about MK vs. DC and found out that up would be jump again and down would be crouch, I was praying that Midway had made the right decision and made MK vs. DC a 2D fighter with 3D graphics. Sadly, I was wrong. Hold L2 or use the analog stick and you once again move in 3 dimensions, making ranged attacks such as Shang Tsung’s fireball useless to skilled players. MK has no right to be in the third dimension, here’s hoping Midway gets it right with the next game.

New to the series is the Rage mode, which is explained via the story mode. Basically Rage mode makes your character supercharged, and is activated via filling up a meter at the bottom of the screen. While you can still take damage in Rage mode, you character cannot be caught in a combo and does extra damage with every connected strike. It’s not a terrible addition, although I do think it’s unnecessary *basically once both characters have a full Rage meter it’s useless* and I wish there was the option to take it out of the game.

Another new addition to the game is the Free Fall Kombat and Close Quarters Kombat. Free Fall Kombat is specific to certain stages *about half of the 14 stages* and is activated by hitting an opponent while near the edge of the screen. Close Quarters Kombat on the other hand is activated by pressing a button *I believe R2 but it might be R1* right next to an opponent. Both in-game mini-games basically boil down to trying to outguess your opponent, as the player on defense will have to guess what the player on offense will press and if done correctly will either end the mini-game or reverse positions *offensive player becomes defensive*. Again I appreciate what Midway was trying to do in adding variety to the game but I wish I could have removed it, as I didn’t find it all that fun.

Finally there is the Test Your Might in-game mini-game where players can knock an opponent against the wall in Superman’s stage which will start a mini-game where players button-mash to determine the amount of damage done. And just like the other mini-games I don’t like Test Your Might and wish it could be turned off.

Overall MK vs. DC is a decent fighter although I am not a fan of any of the new additions to the series and wouldn’t mind seeing them all taken out in the next MK game *assuming there will be another one*. Hell, I hope this is the last time Midway does a versus game, as personally one of my big complaints with the game is the roster. 22 characters are simply not enough and both rosters suck. The MK side is missing classic characters such as Johnny Cage *an original*, Smoke, Noob Saibot, Quan Chi *although he’s in the story he’s not a character*, Reptile, and many more while DC is missing characters like The Watchmen *it would have been an awesome movie tie-in*. I mean come on, who was itching to play as Wonder Woman or Princess Kitana?



Sound


The only character in any fighting game who should be allowed to use a gun is Stryker.


The good old angry MK announcer is back and as pissed as ever. He makes his presence known without over-doing it, and he’s probably my favorite announcer in any fighting series. As for the characters themselves no one comes to mind as terrible or annoying although I wasn’t overly impressed with anyone either. Considering they were trying to build an epic storyline the voice actors all did their jobs well enough but none of them will be up for any awards. The stage music gets its job done, although MK has never been known for having the best soundtracks to their fighting games *I might even argue MK 1 has the best stage music of the series*. The sound effects in MK vs. DC also get the job done. Every hit sounds bone-crunching and helps get the feel of an actual fight across. So overall nothing is done terrible well, but nothing was offensive either, just like every other MK game.


Lasting Appeal

In my opinion the lasting appeal to MK vs. DC will depend upon how much you want to play this game online. Personally, I have already moved on from MK vs. DC and in fact have moved back to playing MK Trilogy for the PS1 *a far superior MK game*. The online mode is done well with little lag *given that both players have decent connections* and the rooms are rather large so you won’t have to fight the same people again if you don’t want to. While I will always prefer to play my fighting games locally I do recognize that there are people who don’t have that option, and for those people MK vs. DC will provide a fun multiplayer experience.


Fun Factor


It might not be Heath Ledger but at least they gave him a lot of awesome moves.


For the most part Mk vs. DC is an awesome game. If you are a fan of the genre or have friends to play with *especially locally* than you should pick this game up. For example my friends and I picked this game up, played around with characters until we found our favorites, and for the most part we’ve had a great time. There are some balancing issues with certain characters such as Shang Tsung *just mash the square button to win* and Lex Luther *his missiles are too powerful, especially his homing missile and straight missile*, but they’re not game ending bugs necessarily. Most people have complained about The Flash being invincible online, but to be honest I have yet to ever lose to The Flash, so I don’t know what they’re talking about.

One thing that I do want to bring up however is the violence. Call me a sucker, but if I’m playing a Mortal Kombat game, I want violence. If you had told me ten years ago that I’d be playing MK for babies with some of the worst Fatalities in history, I’d laugh at you. MK has traded the violence for a comic license, and I’d have rather seen Babalities than the Fatalities in MK vs. DC. Hopefully the next game will bring back honor to Mortal Kombat.


The 411


Ok that’s pretty sweet.


MK vs. DC actually managed to bring two different universes together rather well. While I initially hated the concept *and still do* the storyline especially considering that this is a fighting game was done well. Completionists will have to beat both sides of the story mode *which runs for 2 to 3 hours each* to get every character and then run through the basic arcade mode with all 22 characters to see every ending which makes for a rather long fighting game. One final complaint I have about the game *and boy this is a nerdy complaint* is that the storyline that has been built up for the past several MK games has been completely ignored in MK vs. DC. In the last couple games Scorpion has been in a war with Quan Chi but in this game he is actually working for Quan Chi to battle Sub Zero despite the fact that Sub Zero has moved on from Scorpion and is involved in a war with Noob Saibot and Smoke *both of whom are unforgivably absent from the game*.

In my opinion the decision as to whether or not to pick up Mk vs. DC relies on two questions. Can you pick it up for a reasonable price *$60 is too much* and how big of an MK fan are you? If you can find MK vs. DC for a discount and if you’re a fan of the series than MK vs. DC is a worthy pick-up. For everyone else, just go find a copy of Mortal Kombat Trilogy, it blows every fighting game for the current consoles out of the water.

Gameplay7.5Almost every character has a couple of cool moves to pull off but too much garbage like Close Quarters Kombat gets in the way. 
Sound6.0While nothing is offensive there aren't any award winning performances. The sound effects are well done. 
Lasting Appeal8.0The single player is actually pretty long for a fighter and if you have friends to play with or enjoy fighers online than you'll get a decent amount of enjoyment out of MK vs. DC. 
Fun Factor 6.5The violence has been toned down and the game is missing some of the series' best characters like Reptile and Noob Saibot which makes this reviewer very angry.

One other thing worth mentioning, since the PS3 is region free, if you import the game from Europe, the fatalities were not censored like they were in the American version, so the game is more violent.

Yeah but that doesn't change the fact that all of the fatalities, uncensored or not, are all jokes. There's nothing creative or cool looking. Even the Joker's fatality uncensored is terrible. If you want cool fatalities play MK Trilogy.

Sorry, but Trilogy had some of the lamest fatalities ever. Rain's Upside-Down Uppercut, Noob Saibot's Teleport Flurry, Jax's Giant Stomp, and Classic Sub-Zero's Fade to Black rank as some of the dumbest in the series in my book. And don't even get me started on the A.I.

Coming from a man, nay, a Warrior, who has played and loved every game in the series, I think you might be looking at the game through some slightly rose colored glasses.

Make sure your PS2 is hooked up, get 15 dollars, go to your local game store and ask for 'Mortal Kombat Armageddon'. It's basically Mortal Kombat Trilogy Turbo 3D.

One final complaint I have about the game *and boy this is a nerdy complaint* is that the storyline that has been built up for the past several MK games has been completely ignored in MK vs. DC.

That is because the story takes place after the second game and before the third. I think the merging of the two universes is what leads to Kahn being able to merge Outworld and Earthrealm in the 3rd game. A lot of the characters you talk about were not involved with the series at that point. That is how I took it to be anyway. They mention the first and second tournament, but none of the others. They did this with Shaolin Monks too, where it took place between the first and second game of the main series.

To his bubbliness: Considering every character *out of like 35* in the game had 2 fatalities, a babality, a brutality, and an animality, yeah, some were bound to be dumb. But Jax's giant boot was awesome, leave that off the list. But Trilogy still had dozens of amazing fatalities and animalities *come on, eaten by an ant eater?!*.

To Guest 5059: Sorry but Armagedon was garbage. I own and I've played and beaten every MK game made *including Special Forces and Mythologies* and all of the 3D fighters with the exception of MK4 suck. And Armagedon runs at a crawl compared to MK Trilogy. There's no way it would be considered "turbo".

And to Todd: You bring up a great point. I shall meditate for a great while this afternoon and formulate a proper rebuttal. But instant analysis says that Quan Chi was not around nor knew Shang Tsung until after killing Shinnok in MK4. So to focus the story around Quan Chi and having the entire cast know Quan Chi if the story is set between 2 and 3 is ludicrous *Quan Chi first appeared in Mythologies but no one knew of his powers until after MK4 when he took the amulate*. And not to mention the portal Shang Tsung opened for MK 3 has nothing to do with the merging universes for MK vs DC and I don't accept your answer.

I really enjoyed this game, i'd give it an 8 out of 10. It controls really well but the fatalities are rubbish i have to say.

Haven't played the game, and based on this review, I don't think I will. I've already got Armageddon, this just sounds like that with a couple of needless mini-games thrown in.

On a textual note, your constant use of asterisks is really distracting. Parentheses would have worked just as well. I know it's the internet and it's not like you need to conform to AP style, but I think parentheses would be more clear.

I'd only import the game if it were fairly cheap to do so. Only one or two fatalities were changed (Deathstroke and the Joker) and even the unchanged versions weren't all that violent.

I am not picking on Mark in specific, as this is the style of many reviewers on this site, but it is difficult to respect "because I don't like it" as a good reason to down something in a review. A review is an opinion, true, but a GOOD review should give the basis of the opinion. To put it another way, "because I don't like it" should be the FIRST thing said, not the last. "Because it isn't fun" falls under the same category.

For example, in talking about Free-Fall Kombat, you describe it, which is great, and then say that it isn't fun, which is fair. However, you never say WHY it isn't fun. It sounds like you want to say "I didn't like the Free-Fall Kombat because the 'guess what your opponent will hit' method comes across as random with no strategy." The problem is that I am spitballing on why you didn't like it, and, since I don't know why you didn't like it, I don't know if I'll like it.

Saying that something isn't fun is appropriate in a review, assuming we get a reason. That way, we as readers can make our own decisions.

Dude, you forget the otherside of the fence in this review. You looked at it as a pure MK fan buying it.

I'm a DC fan, I've never owned a fighting game in my life, and I enjoy the fuck out of this game. Every once in a while, get bored, kick some ass as batman. I *DIGGED* the DC side of story mode I'm plowing threw.

I think this is like the perfect game for the noob fighting game.

Based on it just being a MK game and that it has a lack of violence and good fatalities (if you want to just check them out you can watch them all on youtube) you should drop it down to a 6. I mean its above average, but your not going to want to play it more than a few times unless your a fan of the series and there are better fighing games out there.

I followed the news leading up to the release and most of it was not forgiving. This is probably the most forgiving review I'll read on it.

I do see your points Hawkeye and A-train. The asterisk thing is just something I'd always done since my first days of writing the SIXAXIS Report, it's basically a bad habit now. I guess it'd be a good new years resolution for my writing style.

And Jam you bring up a valid point as well. I've noticed it with others and looking back I was foolish enough to fall into that. I'm willing to admit that I could have spent more time with this review.

I wish it was Buzz Lightyear in the last picture. Man that brings back memories *realizes that Derek still uses i...

errr... Man that brings back memories, too bad nobody uses it anymore...

Mortal Kombat Trilogy was a hacked-up, bug riddled turd that was nothing more than a slapped together rush-job made for no other reason than to cash in. It may also have some of the most ludicrous, lazy, unintentionally (I hope) funny Finishing Moves ever. The ONLY thing that game has going for it is its incredible roster of characters, but since the game is so rough around the edges its hard to play anymore.

MK: Armageddon is probably more your cup of tea. Its like Trilogy but its better. It was underwealming, but not bad (except for the lazy fatalities. You wanna complain about MK vs. DC?)

Also, your writing style leaves a lot to be desired as well.

Did they outright say that everyone knew who Quan-Chi was? It was openly acknowledged that Raiden, and Scorpion, and maybe a couple others knew who Quan-Chi was, but I don't think the rest knew him as anything but a sorcerer. Add this to the fact that: *SPOILER*


Quan-Chi sacrifices all of his power to help the cause. That would explain why nobody knew of his power until the fourth game.

Now having said that, I wasn't implying that Tsungs Portal in MK3 had anything to do with the events of MK vs. DCU, I was simply implying that if the MK vs. DCU game takes place between MK2 & 3, Kahn could have used the MK vs. DCU events to inspire the portals in the 3rd game. Below I listed some reasons for why I think the game takes place between the second and third MK:

-Tsungs Portal is meant to merge the two realms, not for Kahn to be able to take over Earth realm, as was the case in the first two games.

- Look at the backgrounds in MK3. Notice how they seem to be mash-ups of Earthrealm and Outworld? That is what drew me to think maybe Kahn got his inspiration for the plot of MK 3 from the merging that happened in MK vs. DCU.

- No Johnny Cage. Cage was dead between the second and third games, which was why he didn't appear in MK3. If Cage was dead, he couldn't really be around for this game.

- Sub Zero's scar. Sub zero is sporting the scar that he didn't have in the second game, but does have in the third game when he unmasked.

- Looking further at Sub Zero, he has to tell people that he is the brother of the original. As far as I can tell this was common knowledge amongst the combatants by the third game.

Those are the reasons that I came to put MK vs DCU into the continuity where I did.

MK Trilogy was a glitchy, unbalanced mess. If it were online, everyone would be Noob Saibot, Motaro, and Shao Kahn. I'd prefer new versions of the original MK3, or if it has to be UMK3, fix the terrible AI that was introduced in Ultimate.

I love this game, as a matter of fact I live for it, the only problem I have is with the flash, if you make a sudden move the same time as him, your character freezes and gives him advantage over you, please fix this glitch.
also the number of people on line at one time affects your game, knocking you off line as your playing and having to refresh the rooms everytime you do, it's annoying, what is this game used by aol?
