Street Fighter IV (PS3) Review
Posted by Gregory McDougal on 02.26.2009

Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: Fighting
Players 1-2 (Online and Offline)
Also available on the Xbox 360

Every genre of video game has a recognizable character or series that one would instantly think of when it comes to the specific genre. For RPGs (Role Playing Games) it has to be “Final Fantasy.” For sports it’s “Madden.” However, when it comes to fighting games, none and I mean no other series is more recognizable than “Street Fighter.” Sorry “Dead or Alive,” “Soul Calibur” and “Tekken,” I love you guys to death, but in terms of recognition, “Street Fighter” is the king. Ryu, Ken and the gang have been around for nearly two decades, showing the world that it’s possible to fuse MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and supernatural forces to have a great experience. No other word in gaming history is more popular than “Hadoken.” If there is, post a comment, as I am curious to know myself.

It’s interesting because while I enjoy the likes of “Soul Calibur,” and “Dead or Alive” a bit more, “Street Fighter” gets more respect. This is because if there were no Ken or Guile, there would be no Kilik, Maxi, Lei Fang or Hitomi. It laid the groundwork for what fighting games could and should be. However, there have been some stinkers in the franchise. Does anyone remember the “EX” installments? To me, without a doubt, the best iteration is the “Alpha” series. It introduced great new characters, less intimidating gameplay and a great art style. While the games were still 2-D, they could hold their own against any 3-D fighter. When “Street Fighter Alpha” was released, it received as much playtime as “Tekken 3” in my household. I must admit that was the last “Street Fighter” game I truly played for a while. “Street Fighter 3” did not entice me like the others, and like I said before, the “EX” installments were lame.

Now, 10 years after “Alpha 3,” Capcom has finally released the fourth iteration in the most revered fighting franchise. Now that the times have changed, can the series keep up with the current fighters? I can answer that with a resounding HELL YEAH!!! Normally at this point in the review, I mention the plot of the reviewed game. However, while there is one, it will go in one ear and out the other to you guys as the appeal of this game is about fisticuffs. Besides, I will leave that up to the individual once they play the game.

Sakura, One of The Console Exclusive Characters

Gameplay

As far as fighting games go, this is a well-oiled machine. The combat is seamless as executing moves are easy enough for an amateur to pull off, but deep enough for veterans to explore the infinite realms of possibilities. Each character has three sets of attacks. First, there are the special moves (Ryu’s “hadoken”). Second, there are the “super combos,” which would be the “shinku hadoken.” Third there are the “ultra combos.” These are simply the character’s signature finisher move that can change the outlook of the battle. Each character has a “revenge bar” at the bottom of the screen that will fill up once the person receives damage. When the character’s bar is lit up, he or she can perform their “ultra combo.” All I can say is it is a sight to behold. It is interesting because the moves do not seem as hard to pull off as previous games in the series (with the exception of certain characters). I feel more confident challenging people in “Street Fighter 4” than I ever did in “Alpha 3.” Even though experts will still own me, confident nonetheless.

New to the series is the “focus attack.” This will stop an opponent dead in his or her tracks, allowing you to pull off a chain combo. This is another deciding factor in battle, as knowing when to perform a “focus attack” at just the right time can separate the button mashers from the vets. Also, charging a “focus attack” can allow you to absorb up to one enemy attack. Performing this allows your vitality gauge to change color and will regenerate over time. Keep in mind that, while it is a great move, if your opponent performs a move that has the “Armor Break” property, it will be almost like not having performed a “focus attack” at all. Then there are four new characters. C. Viper, Abel, El Fuerte and Rufus are welcome additions to the roster as they are fun to use as well as balanced. I have become an Abel fan however, because to me he feels like a "Dead or Alive" character brought over to "Street Fighter."

As far as single player modes are concerned, there is the traditional “Arcade Mode” that allows you to view each characters prologue and ending story. Then there is the “Training Mode,” where you can practice your moves on a standstill character. While, I would have liked this mode be similar to “Virtua Fighter 4’s great training mode, where they explain how to each move is done, it is still not bad. The “Challenge Mode” is fun, as it has players going through “survival,” “time attack” and “trails.” This, along with playing online (more on that later) is the main ways to unlock new icons and titles that customize your personal stats. There is honestly nothing wrong with the core gameplay except for one thing…. SETH!! He is hands down the cheapest SOB I have fought against in the past decade. Even on a lower difficulty he can still be cheap. I bet you will see a lot of Seth’s online once players have unlocked him.

Good Ol' Thunder Thighs Is Back

Graphics

Graphically, this is one of the most stylized fighters out there. Each character has a unique look to them and is never forgettable. Seeing the look on a character as an “ultra combo” is about to be performed on them is classic. The backgrounds, while not bad or horrendous by any means, are just plain in comparison to the characters. Maybe this was Capcom’s decision in order to keep that 2-D feel, which is what “Street Fighter 4” is at its heart. In terms of presentation, it is easily on par with “Soul Calibur 4.” As great as the in-game engine graphics are, the anime endings leave much to be desired. They seem more like an afterthought and included just because. I love anime and that’s why it hurts me to say that. They also don’t do anything to enhance the story.

Sound

Typical “Street Fighter,” which is to say it is a great thing. When characters shout out their signature moves, it takes you back to the good ol’ days. Also, each characters theme music has been remixed and sounds great (my favorite is Sakura’s and Cammy’s). I know I will take some heat for this, but I love the main intro theme. I never skip it whenever I put the disc in. You can also switch between the character’s Japanese and English voices, so either way it is a win-win situation. I thought the English voices were not bad. I don’t even mind the announcer, as he is nowhere near as annoying as that weirdo from the “Soul Calibur” series.

Cammy's Ultra Combo

Lasting Appeal

Endless. Not only can you challenge friends locally, but now globally. That’s right people; “Street Fighter” is now online. As stated before, fighting online is one of the ways to earn medals, battle points, icons, etc. So far, I have not encountered any lag while fighting online. It’s as if the person is in my house. Even though the online is great, local matches are still the best way to play any “Street Fighter” game. The series is still in regional and international tournaments, and this installment will further cement its place among the elite. Years and years will go by and this game will still be in consoles.

The 411

If you love fighting games, BUY THIS GAME (you probably already have). Heck, even if you like having fun, this game is still worth the price. Capcom has found a way to bring in newcomers while not forgetting about its fan base. Until Tekken 6 is released, we are looking at the premiere fighting game of 2009. Bravo Capcom. Bravo.

Graphics10.0Great character designs make this fighter a force to be reckoned with.411 Elite Award
Gameplay10.0Pure Street Fighter. Enough Said.
Sound10.0Great Intro as well as the option of switching between the Japanese and English Voices. Hearing the characters shout their moves is priceless.
Lasting Appeal10.0Long after you are finish with the single player challenge mode, there is online and local multiplayer which will last for years.
Fun Factor 10.0The only reason I am not playing now is because I am writing the review. A worthy purchase for anyone who wants to play a fun game.

Your reviews are pretty good, but damn man, enough with *this* and *that* every other word.

This game INDEED deserves the a perfect 10. Never had so much fun playing a SF game in years. Also, remember the tournament download and possible Deejay and T Hawk downloads coming soon.

For some reason, I enjoy using Sakura online. X-D She is an excellent character.

Ok this game is good and I have been playing it a lot but there is no way this game deserves a perfect 10. There are plenty of minor complaints especially with some of the console exclusive characters like Cammy.

Totally agree, perfect 10. I haven't been playing this much playstation since GTA 4.

Sakura is exclusive to the PS3? Then how did I unlock her on my Xbox360 on the release day>?

Not a big SF guy, can someone explain the Dan joke.

Are you kidding me?
"THIS GAME IS PERFECT!"
Piss off, there is no such thing as a perfect game, and from what I heard of SFIV, the final boss is a master of cheap teleportation...

A review is supposed to also point out the negative parts of a game, this just came off as nothing but an add for SFIV.

I disagree with this review entirely. By giving a game 10 you suggest that this is the pinnacle of video gaming and it can never get better. You are also suggesting that this game will transcend genres and get fans from all walks of life... which I doubt.

Give it high marks but be careful with your 10's.

"the anime endings leave much to be desired. They seem more like an afterthought and included just because. I love anime and that’s why it hurts me to say that. They also don’t do anything to enhance the story."

If there are flaws, the game is not a 10/10 sorry

First,I don't consider myself to be a really good SF player. With that being said, I don't think Seth is THAT tough of a boss. Cheap- YES! Otherwise, he actually drops his defense quite often and can be a sucker for many attacks. You just need to figure out his patterns.

Honestly, I beat him without taking a loss in my first two playthoughs of Arcade mode. (Although it took me quite some time to beat him with a few characters.)

Gill from the SF3 games, and pretty much every SNK fighter boss are FAR more difficult than Seth in my opinion.

"A review is supposed to also point out the negative parts of a game, this just came off as nothing but an add for SFIV."

I agree. These reviews are only important to the person reviewing the game and the ass kissers that want to kiss up to them to try get on their good side.

Exclusive characters? Standard TE characters to be downloadable?

EPIC FUCKIN FAIL!

"Not a big SF guy, can someone explain the Dan joke."

When Street Fighter got popular it spawned imitators - including SNK's Art of Fighting and King of Fighters series. Dan was added in to ridicule those...mostly the AoF guys. His one-handed fireball imitates their motion.

There are not console exclusive characters, everyone, don't get too excited now!

And lay off him, guys, this game shines in comparison to most fighting games. You honestly aren't going to get much better out of the genre than this, so I can see the 10 as a reasonable ranking.

I stand by my score. If those who are hating truly read the review you would have noticed I mentioned a few issues with the game. It deserved a 10 because it fundamentally does everything right.

Posted By: Greg Mcdougal (Guest)  on February 27, 2009 at 12:25 AM

Can we please have this game reviewed by someone who isn't a fanboy? Seriously, a 10?

"When Street Fighter got popular it spawned imitators - including SNK's Art of Fighting and King of Fighters series. Dan was added in to ridicule those...mostly the AoF guys. His one-handed fireball imitates their motion."

Ummmm...Yeah and no.

Dan Hibiki was mocking ONLY the Art of Fighting/King of Fighter's character Ryo Sakazaki. Dan's Gadoken, and Dankukyaku were similar to Ryo's Koow-ken and Hienshipu-kyaku.

There is a bug when you install SFIV to the PS3 HD. Seth goes from cheap but beatable to the equivilent of HARD even on Easiest...
http://uk.gamespot.com/ps3/action/streetfighteriv/show_msgs.php?topic_
id=m-1-48245485&pid=943711&page=0
I'd still give this a 10 even with the bug and other issues mention as it hasn't stopped me playing at all and IMO is the best fighting game available now.

Posted By: Guest#8691 (Guest)  on February 27, 2009 at 06:18 AM

I thought that I was the only person experiencing an issue with Seth. I can handle the entire game except for Seth on Normal, and then I can only beat him Ryu or Ken. He is just too cheap.

Posted By: Dude (Guest)  on February 27, 2009 at 11:36 AM

I also agree about rating that game a 10. That's a bit extreme if you ask me. The game lacks a tournament mode and the anime cutscenes are not highly favored. I'll say a 9, but definitely not a 10. This is your same SF since '91, with updated graphics. Now that's not necessarily a bad thing. Stick to what's tried and true. Just nothing revolutionary. So yeah, I'm calling "fanboy"-ism

Posted By: swiftychampleone (Guest)  on February 27, 2009 at 12:54 PM

I don't like the graphics, they look like cardboard cut-outs against the background.

Joe Satarini wood pawn ALL those lusers if he were in dis game! Cuck on tat you Ryu loving losers!

And if you look at the legend, a 10 means "Virtually Perfect". If 10 meant the pinnacle of gaming and it can't get better, then no game would EVER deserve a 10. There is always going to a game viewed as better, and if no game deserves a 10, why bother having a 1-10 scale? Of course, with a 1-9 scale, every time a game got a 9 people would be all, "BOOOOOOOOOO, 9 IS TOO MUCH!!!!1!!1!! YOU IS FANZBOYXORS1!!!1!!!"

Let the review be. Is anyone even arguing that it isn't a fantastic game? Any review, ever, is going to be colored by the reviewers opinion going into the experience. So Greg says 10 because he loves the SF series. I bet someone else who hates the series would give it a 1 in their heads before even playing it. I'm sure everyone has already made up their minds about buying the game anyways.

Posted By: Wildkarrde23 (Guest)  on February 28, 2009 at 12:33 PM

The is a 10 or a TEN if that helps, good job Greg. This game is sick and the anime stuff would only bother you if your really into anime, I care more about the game and this is the best fighter in a very long time.

P.S. I'm not a "fan boy" either, so suck it.

Hey moron above me anobiumpertinax happens to be a Youtube buddy of mine end when you mess wit him you mess wit me! He's right abut Street Fighter IV being fur complete pussy's like you self end that Joe Satarini is the man who would whoop all dose over rated characters butts especially Chun'Lis who doesn’t even fart (really loud and smelly) fireballs anymore like she did in the pass I really miss her "My farts smells better than yours!" quote from previous games! So fock Street Fighter IV end fock people who like this pile of garbage! My man Joe Satarini could take all you losers one thousand two one and STILL give better head dan all of you! i should know because I’ve experienced it before! Hopefully street fighter iv flops while Joe Satarini still sells out venues like he does!

Birland77 Street Fighter IV sold over 2 million units WHAT THE HELL ARE U TALKING ABOUT U INCOHERENT JACKASS?!!

"{Birland77 Street Fighter IV sold over 2 million units WHAT THE HELL ARE U TALKING ABOUT U INCOHERENT JACKASS?!!"

Tell me about it, Birland77 and all his Youtube moronic buddies would rather go blab about what a god Joe Satarini is all day long and defend him at all costs, even when he does something stupid like what he's doing to Coldplay (and I'm not even a fan of theirs) never mind the fact that ALL artists copy each other whether it's a coincidence or not (there's only so many notes musicians can come up with before running out). So it's quite obvious Satarini's doing this because his career has tanked and is desperate for cash. Remember the time when the Romantics went after Activision (I'm also not a fan of theirs either) for some stupid your cover sounds too much like the original BS? Same thing here, career has fizzled and is desperate for cash.
Anyway I'm getting off topic here so let's go back to the subject at hand.
smh, while I appreciate the response to that dipstick Birland77, he was actually HOPING that Street Fighter IV bombed not CLAIMING that it sold poorly. Luckily, Street Fighter IV did do well (and is a great game), so Birland77's hopes of Street Fighter IV doing poorly didn't come true, thank you very much.
Also smh forget about Birland77's hoping about Street Fighter IV doing poorly, there's other stupidity in that message of his that should be addressed!

"Hey moron above me anobiumpertinax happens to be a Youtube buddy of mine end when you mess wit him you mess wit me!"

Hey Birland77 the "moron" above you wasn't even talking about your moronic pal from Youtube you retard! Learn to read other people's messages next time!

"Joe Satarini is the man who would whoop all dose over rated characters butts especially Chun'Lis who doesn’t even fart (really loud and smelly) fireballs anymore like she did in the pass I really miss her "My farts smells better than yours!" quote from previous games!"

Boy you sure make that dipstick Glenn Hauman look like Einstein by comparison! I don't even know what's going on through that head of yours but last time I checked, Chun-Li DIDN'T FLATUATE (REALLY LOUD AND SMELLY) FIREBALLS IN ANY VIDEO GAME!, let alone that stupid win quote you came up with! You must have some really sick fantasies to come up with that crap! Oh and the worst Street Fighter character would mutilate your "boy" Joe Satarini's ass any day of the week! (let alone Chun-Li)
Oh and use a friggin spellchecker Birland77 your spelling is bad!

Anyway, Street Fighter IV is a great game and I hope that it's looked back upon as a really good video game in the future and with that I'll end this message right now, thank you very much.

(continued from last message)

"{Birland77 Street Fighter IV sold over 2 million units WHAT THE HELL ARE U TALKING ABOUT U INCOHERENT JACKASS?!!"

Actually Street Fighter 4 SHIPPED 2 million units NOT SOLD big difference. However as of this writing Street Fighter 4 should have sold close to a million about now. You either didn’t research this properly or you spinned the numbers to make it look like it sold 2 million smh, if anything YOU ARE THE INCOHERENT JACKASS!!!

“I stand by my score. If those who are hating truly read the review you would have noticed I mentioned a few issues with the game. It deserved a 10 because it fundamentally does everything right.”

And people like you are fucking retards, if you can’t take the criticism then disable the comments or better yet DON’T WRITE ANY REVIEWS, if people don’t like your score that’s their problem not yours. Defending your score like that makes you an even BIGGER retard than they are! Now crawl back into the trash can you came from!

“Luckily, Street Fighter IV did do well (and is a great game), so Birland77's hopes of Street Fighter IV doing poorly didn't come true, thank you very much.”

Indeed, I think Street Fighter 4’s numbers are pretty good for what they are, let’s hope it continues to sell strong for the rest of the year because it really is a great game.

“Anyway, Street Fighter IV is a great game and I hope that it's looked back upon as a really good video game in the future and with that I'll end this message right now, thank you very much.”

Amen to that brother, amen to that.

Ok, you got me, I just checked out the numbers for Street Fighter IV and the game has only sold 1 million so far but still, that’s a great number and I’m confident that it will sell 2 million before Summer is here because Street Fighter IV kicks all sorts of ass!!! WHOOO!!! And what’s with the language? You sound like Seth MacFarlane on one of his Family Guy DVD commentaries. Please tone the language down for ALL our sakes!

“Anyone who thinks this game is overrated should go back to their posts polishing Master Chief's minor chief.”

And you should know that your post is the equivalent of a Britney Spears rehab program U INCOHERENT JACKASS!!!

“Oh, and Sakura is NOT console exclusive. I play on 360, and have everyone unlocked excpet Seth, Akuma and Gouken.”

What McDougal meant about console exclusive characters is CHARACTERS THAT ARE NOT IN THE ARCADE VERSION OF STREET FIGHTER IV!!! NOT CHARACTERS THAT ARE EXCLUSIVE TO ONE SYSTEM OR THE OTHER!!! My gosh you are such a fucktard!

“Oh and I totally suck at Street Fighter IV when I play the game at the second easiest difficulty setting let alone other people because I'm a fag that likes to fantacise about Zed and Maynard all day long man I wish I could marry them...”

Listen to track 3 of Twisted Sister’s Stay Hungry album because that’s what’s gonna happen to you and your kind!!!

A 10? are you retarded, this game deserves like an 8. The graphics on the characters are weak as shit and nothing new has been invented here. Its virtually just SF2 with new graphics. WOOOOPEEE?!? Seriously, not worthy of perfect score, i think we are all over excited that its bringing us back to our childhoods and the first time we got out ass kicked by Vega, Saget or M Bison and how we rose up and beat that hitler look a like. But not a perfect score, i will never agree with you. This also hurts your rep cause i now know that when YOU really like a game for whatever reason your going to up the score. This game should have been review as if we never knew anything about Street Fighter, not freaking out in amazement because its a redone game.
