Mad Ramblings of a Movie Geek 05.20.09: Summer Movie Trailers - July

Judd Apatow tackles cancer, John Dillinger dominates the 4th of July weekend, and Harry Potter finally sees the light of day...
Welcome to this week's Mad Ramblings of a Movie Geek! In the past few weeks I've presented the 411 audience with an analysis of summer movie trailers for each month of the summer. My original plan was to do one of these a month, but I've found that I'm just too anxious to discuss the topic to spread the columns out that far. Having already done May and June, I might as well go ahead and finish it off.
As I look at July, I notice that, much like June, it too is short of movies that would typically be considered summer blockbusters. May was a jam-packed month, so the studios no doubt wanted to begin the summer with a bang. The only problem is, that leaves things a little thin for the remaining months. In fact, the only July release that has the potential to be a bona fide summer popcorn flick was supposed to be released last fall. Still, I've managed to put together a (small) list of some of Juy's most anticipated releases. Is it premature? I don't know and I don't care. I want to jump on the summer movie bandwagon before it gets too crowded.
Mad Ramblings presents Summer Movie Trailers- July…
My Mad Ramblings
I'll go on record and say I've never read the books, so go ahead and stone me now. But I've followed the movie series from day one, and I'm pretty excited about this- my level of anticipation is much higher than it would normally be since they pushed this back from last November. By now most of us are probably aware that one of the series' most beloved characters bites in this one, which will set the stage for the epic final installment, so event-filled and action packed that it had to be split into two movies. I'm excited that Half Blooded Prince will offer a back story on Voldemort, and add some more ambiguity to the nature of Snape's character and motivations. All I can say is, by the time it's all said and done, we'll know what side he's really on. This movie will be a huge hit, that's a no-brainer. And the fact that it's been given a PG rating, as opposed tio the PG-13 of the previous two, shows that David Yates is striving to make it family friendly but still maintain the building level of intensity.
My Mad Ramblings
I've been waiting for this one since it was announced, and it looks like it will deliver. Then again, with a director like Michael Mann and an actor like Johnny Depp, expectations are no doubt pretty high. The studio's faith in this project is evident by the fact that it's opening on the coveted Wednesday before the Independence Day. With no Will Smith movie opening that week, audiences will have to choose between this and Ice Age 3 for their 4th of July movie fix. Anyone who isn't a small child or doesn't have any small children will likely choose this one.
My Mad Ramblings
Judd Apatow is back! But has he really gone anywhere, since he's had his name attached to practically every major comedy release of the last three years? By back, I mean back in the director's chair. And he's tackling some pretty daring subject matter, but it looks as if it's handled pretty sensitively. At no point in the trailer does it appear that Apatow and Co. are making light of terminal illnesses. Sandler and Rogen should be a good team, as Rogen's knack for uproarious improvisation should suit Sandler's comedic style very well. Judd Apatow's bank account will continue to grow this summer. And bonus points for the use of Ringo Starr's "Photograph" in the trailer.
That's it for this week's Mad Ramblings. Next week I'll be back with the August trailers.
