Mad Ramblings of a Movie Geek 05.27.09: Summer Movie Trailers - August

The last of my summer movie trailer ramblings...
Welcome to this week's Mad Ramblings of a Movie Geek! The summer movie season has barely begun, so it might come as a surprise to some that I'm already commencing with my analysis of the August movie trailers. Nevertheless, I am. Once again there aren't a lot of popcorn movies slated for this month, but there is a new outing from Quentin Tarantino… oh yeah, and a GI Joe movie… with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander? More on that later…
This week Mad Ramblings presents the third and final outing in the summer movie trailer series… Summer Movie Trailers- August…
My Mad Ramblings
Normally I would be skeptical, since we're talking about a movie based on a cartoon (actually it was originally a comic book, just in case the purists want to bitch at me). But since Transformers worked so well, there's hope for this. My main complaint is why is Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing Cobra Commander? I know the dude wears a mask all the time, but they still could have found somebody other than the kid from Third Rock From the Sun! Then again, Marlon Wayans as Ripcord isn't exactly an inspired casting choice either. There's not a whole lot lined up for the month of August, so this will undoubtedly be the major end-of-summer blockbuster.
My Mad Ramblings
Brad Pitt and Mike Myers in a Tarantino flick? Bet you never thought you'd see that. This is a remake of an obscure 1970's Italian-made flick. Good old Quentin and his encyclopedic film knowledge. It looks good, based on that minute and forty second run through. Unfortunately, this is likely to be judged solely as a "Tarantino" film, meaning that since it's not Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction, it will disappoint a lot of people. That's really not fair either- nobody bitched at Spielberg when E.T. wasn't just like Jaws. Of course I'm comparing apples to oranges here. I for one am curious to see how Tarantino handles a WWII flick. Knowing the heavy levels of carnage and graphic violence in his films, this could make Saving Private Ryan look like Driving Miss Daisy, and I mean that in a good way.
My Mad Ramblings
Rob Zombie swore he'd never make a sequel to his Halloween remake. He ended the first one by having Michael Myers get his head blown off. And now, here we go again… People will die, Michael's evil, etc. etc. If this trailer is any indication, Zombie seems to be attempting to break the record for most grab-from-behind scenes in a horror movie. And why do these movies no longer come out in October?
That's it for this week's edition of Mad Ramblings. Until next time…
Sorry, but "the kid from Third Rock From the Sun!" is one hell of an actor. Check him out in Brick, Mysterious Skin, or even The Lookout and you will see that you have no reason to complain.

Saw is the only horror franchise smart enough to release in October and the series continues to make bank.
