Two Tivos To Paradise 07.17.09: Same Format, Now With More Affleck!
Posted by Al Norton on 07.17.2009

Hello Friends. Summer has finally arrived in Boston – we've actually had multiple days in a row of beautiful weather. I took in a game at Fenway last Sunday, getting to see Josh Beckett pick up win number 11, although the more impressive achievement was my avoiding sunburn. Along with work and regular life stuff, the big thing in our house is the planning of the twins first birthday party; hard as it is to believe, the turn one next month. I wanted to spend our electric bill money on getting Wally the Green Monster to make an appearance but Mrs. Tivo talked me out of it. And by "talked me out of it" I mean "rolled her eyes and walked out of the room."

Lots of TV news to catch up this week as we return to our regular format after two weeks of "event" columns.

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine, he gets me my news for free.

For Your Kindness I'm In Debt To You And I Never Could Have Come This Far Without You
I wanted to create a special news item as a way of thanking everyone for all the positive feedback to last week's big anniversary column. It was a joy to put together and despite my setting the bar ridiculously high for next year's 200th, I wouldn't have changed a thing.

Of all the emails I received during the week, one in particular stood out, with the writer apologizing for missing the deadline and wondering if I could still make use of his list of favorite TV moments. Well, who am I to say no to an Oscar winner whose movies have grossed close to $3 billion worldwide? Ladies and gentlemen, here are Ben Affleck's favorite TV Moments

Red Sox game four against New York in ‘04

Cheers finale

Lost season finale reveal that the flashbacks were flash forwards—I think it was season three. Pure genius.

The Sopranos. All of them. Best show ever to be televised. Favorite episode was maybe the one where they got lost in the park in the snow chasing the Russian. I think Imperioli wrote it and Buscemi directed but I could be wrong. The one where Adriana gets squeezed by the FBI and throws up on the desk is brilliant. There are too many to name. Allen Coulter did great work directing that show. Gandolfini was amazing.

The season finale of the British office was incredible.

Pilot of Mad Men where Jon Hamm gives a monologue about the nature of advertising and its appeal was spectacular. He is brilliant.

Watched a lot of MASH with my father as a kid.

My brother and I loved Simon and Simon when we were really little, that and Magnum PI were on back to back. You had to love a show with a character named "Ice Pick" who always had the "go to" exposition from the street.

The Richard Hatch "snake eat the rat" Survivor finale was the best reality TV ever got.

The greatest TV docs came from HBO:
High on Crack Street (America Undercover)
Paradise Lost: The Child Murders of Robin Hood Hills

Any game Barkley does on TNT

Kimmel (I have to say that or I can't go home tonight)

Thanks, Ben; hope to see you next July for the 200th!

All The Gold In California Is In A Bank In The Middle of Beverly Hills Under Somebody Else's Name
Nominations for the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced yesterday. What follows is a rundown of the major categories.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men (CBS)
Kevin Dillon, Entourage (HBO)
Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
Jack McBryer, 30 Rock (NBC)
Tracy Morgan, 30 Rock (NBC)
Rainn Wilson, The Office (NBC)

Analysis: Jeremy Piven's lack of a nomination is surprising considering his winning track record. I'd put Chi McBride in over Jack McBryer in a heart beat. Not a bad group at all, and it's great to see Tracy Morgan get recognized for his insane brilliance. Let's hope Emmy host Neil Patrick Harris finally gets the win.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY
Kristin Chenoweth, Pushing Daises (ABC)
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock (NBC)
Elizabeth Perkins, Weeds (Showtime)
Amy Poehler, Saturday Night Live (NBC)
Vanessa Williams, Ugly Betty (ABC)
Kristin Wiig, Saturday Night Live (NBC)

Analysis: Very happy to see Kristin Wiig here, especially since she won the Norty for this category. The lack of anyone from Better Off Ted is disappointing.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA
Christian Clemenson, Boston Legal (ABC)
Michael Emerson, Lost (ABC)
William Hurt, Damages (FX)
Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad (AMC)
William Shatner, Boston Legal (ABC)
John Slattery, Mad Men (AMC)

Analysis: I was a huge Boston Legal fan but neither Shatner and Clemenson belong in this group, especially with guys like Josh Holloway, Michael Hogan, and the two Ryans (Hurst and Kwanten) being absent from the list. Aaron Paul's nomination was one of the highlights of the morning, and I think it's a two horse race with him and Michael Emerson.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA
Rose Byrne, Damages (FX)
Hope Davis, In Treatment (HBO)
Cherry Jones, 24 (Fox)
Sandra Oh, Grey's Anatomy (ABC)
Diane Wiest, In Treatment (HBO)
Chandra Wilson, Grey's Anatomy (ABC)

Analysis: No one from Big Love?!?! No Anna Gunn or Katey Sagal? And most criminally, no Connie Britton?

BEST LEAD ACTOR, COMEDY
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock (NBC)
Steve Carell, The Office (NBC)
Jermaine Clement, Flight of the Conchords (HBO)
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
Tony Shalhoub, Monk (USA)
Charlie Sheen, Two and a Half Men (CBS)

Analysis: I was really hoping James Roday would get recognized with the additional nominee this year but no such luck. As overrated as I think Big Bang Theory is, Parsons is great and I am happy to see him here.

BEST LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY
Christina Applegate, Samantha Who? (ABC)
Toni Collette, The United States of Tara (Showtime)
Tina Fey, 30 Rock (NBC)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, The New Adventures of Old Christine (CBS)
Mary Louise Parker, Weeds (Showtime)
Sarah Silverman, The Sarah Silverman Program (Comedy Central)

Analysis: Not a lot to dispute in this group, all talented women who deserve to be here.

BEST LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA
Simon Baker, The Mentalist (CBS)
Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment (HBO)
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad (AMC)
Michael C Hall, Dexter (Showtime)
Jon Hamm, Mad Men (AMC)
Hugh Laurie, House (Fox)

Analysis: Simon Baker is clearly the biggest surprise, taking a spot that rightfully should have gone to Denis Leary. Or Michael Chiklis. Or Damian Lewis. Or Ian McShane. Or Bill Paxton. Or Benjamin Bratt. Or…

BEST LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA
Glenn Close, Damages (FX)
Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters (ABC)
Mariska Hargitay, Law and Order: SVU (NBC)
Holly Hunter, Saving Grace (TNT)
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men (AMC)
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer (TNT)

Analysis: Hands down the worst choices by the Academy this year were in this category. Glenn Close, Holly Hunter, and Mariska Hargitay simply do not belong if we are basing it in simply the performance they gave in the previous season. Jill Scott's lack of a nomination for The #1 Ladies Detective Agency is probably the single biggest omission of the year, and Regina King and Mary McDonnell were much more highly qualified candidates as well. I am a little surprised to not see Anna Paquin here, too.

BEST SERIES, COMEDY
30 Rock (NBC)
Entourage (NBC)
Family Guy (Fox)
Flight of the Conchords (HBO)
How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
The Office (NBC)
Weeds (Showtime

Analysis: Family Guy becomes the first animated series in this category since The Flintstones back in 1961, so hats off to them! I'd prefer Chuck or Better Off Ted in the spots held by Flight of the Conchords and/or Weeds, but it's not like the latter two are bad nominations by any stretch.

BEST SERIES, DRAMA
Big Love (HBO)
Breaking Bad (AMC)
Damages (FX)
Dexter (Showtime)
House (Fox)
Lost (ABC)
Mad Men (AMC)

Analysis: A very strong group, one that is a testament to the quality of dramatic television in 2009. Rescue Me would get the nod over House in my vote, and Friday Night Lights over Dexter would be an easy swap as well. I actually enjoyed this season of Damages WAY more than last year so while I wouldn't have put it in the top 7, I am ok with it being on the list.

Overall Analysis: Since frustration over snubs always plays well, let's start with that; how did Rescue Me, Friday Night Lights, and Battlestar Galactica combine for exactly ZERO nominations in the major categories? How did no one from the cast of Big Love make the cut? I am not a regular viewer but everyone loves to tell me how amazing The Shield's final season was and that got no love, either.

On the plus side, Breaking Bad and Mad Men got all sorts of love, as did 30 Rock, and How I Met Your Mother finally got some series love. I would call this set of nominees a mixed bag but more on the positive side than the negative.

And there you have it. My picks for who should and will win will come the Friday before the awards themselves, which will be telecast live by CBS on Sunday, September 20th.

Every Time I Think Of You, I Always Catch My Breath
Let's run down the headlines we have missed over the last two weeks…

*Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni signed new deals to stay with Law and Order: SVU not only next season but for the 2010-2011 season as well, if the network renews the series for 12th season. In other SVU news, Oscar, Emmy, and Golden Globe winner Christine Lahti will appear in the first four episodes as a new ADA. Also, Wentworth Miller (Prison Break) will guest star in the season premiere.

*Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are writing and producing a new series for Comedy Central that will star Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) as an IT specialist who gets laid off and has to move back in with his parents and brother in their small hometown. Ferrell and McKay teamed to write Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers and also together created the web site Funny Or Die. The initial order from the network is 10 episodes but if a ratings minimum is hit during that run it will trigger an immediate 90 episode renewal. The deal is similar to the one that worked to great success for Tyler Perry and TBS with both House of Payne and Meet The Browns.

*A health crisis for Parenthood star Maura Tierney has caused NBC to push the premiere of the series back to mid-season. Tierney has a tumor in her breast that will be removed via surgery before any further diagnosis is given. The drama, an adaptation of the hit Ron Howard movie, co-stars Peter Krause, Craig T Nelson, Bonnie Bedelia, and Erica Christiansen. In its place the network is bumping the nursing drama Mercy up from mid-season to the fall.

*Hilary Duff will guest on multiple episodes of Gossip Girl's upcoming season, playing a famous actress who tries to escape the limelight while going to NYU, where she becomes Vanessa's roommate. Her first episode will be in early October.

*Emmy winner Drea de Matteo will take up residence on Wisteria Lane this fall, signing as a full time cast member of Desperate Housewives. Last seen on Sons of Anarchy, she followed up her award winning Soprano's gig with a two year stint on Joey. Jeffrey Nording (Dirt) will play her character's husband Beau Mirchoff (The Grudge 3) her son. In other DH news, Maiara Walsh, who appeared as Gabby and Ricardo's niece at the end of the season will be a regular on the upcoming season. Also, Andrea Bowen (Julie), who was absent most of last season, will return as a regular for the new season.

*Daneel Harris will reprise her role as Rachel on at least 7 episodes of One Tree Hill this fall. Also appearing on the show will be recent 90210'er Jana Kramer, playing the lead model for Brooke's clothing line.

*FX announced that Sons of Anarchy's 13 episode second season would debut on Tuesday, September 8th at 10 pm, with It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia returning on Thursday, September 17th at 10 pm. The network also said that Nip/Tuck's second-to-last season would kick off sometime in October.

*Mark Pellegrino, who made a very strong impression as Jacob on Lost's season finale, has been cast as Lucifer (as in, the Devil) on Supernatural, a role he will begin playing on the show's season premiere. Speaking of Supernatural, the character of Meg is returning, now played by Rachel Minor (the role was originated by Nicki Aycox). So far she is only set for one episode but that could turn into more.

*Lost's upcoming final season gained an hour when ABC announced the last batch of episodes would total 18 hours.

*Eric McCormack is recovering from Trust Me's cancellation quite well; not only will he guest on Law and Order: SVU's second episode this fall but he's also landed a recurring role on The New Adventures of Old Christine as the title character's new love interest.

*Weapons of Self Destruction, Robin Williams' first HBO stand-up comedy special in seven years, will premiere in December. The show will be taped in Washington, D.C. in November.

*Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me, 30 Days) will produce and direct The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special In 3-D On Ice, a documentary look at the show's impact on the world that is the culmination of Fox's yearlong celebration of the classic animated series first 20 years. The special is set to air in January.

Turns Out Not Where But Who You're With That Really Matters
The top thing I watched since the last column went to press AKA The Best Of What's Around… I am not sure words could fully do justice to how much I loved this opening segment from The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (which I only saw because TTTP official singer-songwriter Will Dailey was supposed to be the musical guest that night), so I am not even to bother trying other than to say I have watched it multiple times since and it has yet to leave me without a huge smile. Please to enjoy...

People Say I'm Crazy Doing What I'm Doing. Well, They Give Me All Kinds Of Warnings To Save Me From Ruin
What's flashed before my eyes the last few weeks…Really enjoyed the premiere of 10 Things I Hate About You, taking enough from the movie to be familiar but being original enough to not feel stale. Larry Miller clearly needs to be a regular on a TV show - any show - at all times…Rescue Me continues to have its strongest season to date, with too many highlights to list here. I don't think there has been a bad line reading or a false emotional note all season…Watching these last few Samantha Who? episodes makes me even more sad the series got cancelled. I saw a quote from one of the producers where he expressed mock shock that ABC's strategy of pulling the series off the air for months didn't succeed in getting a larger – and younger – audience and it made me laugh…Even when The Cleaner doesn't hit on all cylinders, Benjamin Bratt makes it a worthwhile hour of television. He is giving one of the more natural performances you will see but that ease in his character's skin isn't at the cost of depth of personality or intensity…The scene from last week's episode of The Closer, when the guy who fired his gun in the air to scare off would-be carjackers learned that his bullets had gone on to kill an innocent bystander, was as good as anything the show has ever done. You could see what was coming – the breakdown after he learns the truth – and the actor (Don Franklin) still managed to pull it off…Coco's Twitter Tracker continues to be genius…Eureka FINALLY returned, with Colin Ferguson in fine form. Each season the show gets better. I hope that (former Sherriff) Andy becomes at least a recurring character; seeing him try to find his way in the world after deciding he wasn't cut out for the town's law enforcement staff would be quite amusing…This past Monday's episode of The Closer was highlighted by the work of Andrew Daly, who I previously only knew from his funny bits on Lewis Black's The Root of All Evil. I am keeping my fingers crossed we see Detective Richard Tracy again in the future…One of the things I am enjoying about Top Chef: Masters is how many of the participants know each other. It makes the competition both friendlier and at times more intense, and that makes the show stronger. Still not sure about the whole stars rating system but I'll get over it…Speaking of cooking reality shows, I wish Chopped would take a hint from TC:M and steal the tournament concept; since each week of Chopped has a winner, why not do 16 regular episodes and then do a five week tournament of champions?...Each new week of The Philanthropist has me less and less interested in the show. I loved the pilot but I don't feel like anything has changed since then, and some of the ways Teddy gets around security – like sneaking by an Army – strain even the farthest regions of credibility…Better Off Ted continues to impress, leaving me with a huge smile as they take scenes in ways I was not expecting. "Too bad you had to start work during 60's week" was one of my favorite lines of last week…Hung works on all levels for me, one of my favorite new comedies of the year, by far. The cast is excellent and the show is a lot more than its 30 second summary would lead you to believe. It's great to see Thomas Jane finally get some good Ghostbuster things to do…I always forget to mention Terry Serpico's unsung performance on Army Wives. His Frank is always believable and the little things he and the writers do to keep him consistant with his code of respect and honor, like admonishing his son to not speak ill of his Mother despite her affair, are what goes into why the show rises above the level of adult soap opera...Leverage returned this week without losing an ounce of the cast chemistry that makes the show so much fun. My only issue is one of location; if you are going to set the show in Boston, film it in Boston!!!!...

TV Pick Of The Week
Torchwood – the best science fiction show you may never have heard of – does it's third season a little differently than most; instead of a full batch of episodes they went with a five night mini-series, each episode airing at 9 pm on BBC America. The reviews have been fantastic and you don't need to have ever watched before to enjoy. The only down side is that they didn't bring James Marsters back for this go-round but I can live with that because I do so enjoy the event programming style they are using.

For those of you who aren't familiar, ,b>Torchwood is a Dr. Who spin-off about a secret organization that investigates alien activity. It's funny, sexy, violent at times, and doesn't make you feel even the slightest bit guilty about watching. If you need to be sold on it more, I'll put it to you this way: there is nothing on US television that even comes close to resembling Torchwood.

Don't miss Torchwood: Children of the Earth, every night next week at 9 pm on BBC America.

Hope You Need My Love, Babe, Just Like I Need You

Come on Al, you can't possibly believe that Family Guy deserved a nomination, I got more faith in you than that.

I have a question for you oh king of the cable box. Premium movie channels are advertised as Non interrupted movies...no ads. Well lately Starz is doing pop up commercials across the entire bottom of the screen advertising upcoming specials. IS THIS A NEW PERMANENT THING TO LOOK FORWARD TO? Are other premium movie channels doing this to?

No nominations for The Shield has to be one of the biggest snubs in Emmy history. Michael Chiklis, Walton Goggins, and the show itself deserved recognition. Terrible...I won't be watching the awards. And Al, have you watched The Shield yet? Your TV Writer cred is out the window until you do.

All I have to say is that Craig Ferguson is hilarious! Best late night host there is now!

I like Mariska Hargitay but for some reason her Olivia Benson character sometimes annoys me. And if the episode deals with a rape victim, it'll be another Olivia-centered episode because she was the product of a rape. How original.

I wish Belzer was on there more. Munch rules.

i hate to be "that guy" but the show is titled Doctor Who, not Dr. Who.

i know it's a minor, silly little thing, but there ya go.

It is completely ridiculous, but I get so frustrated with these damn award shows. Granted, I don't watch everything that comes on tv, so I would never claim to be an expert, but I feel like I do know quality when I see it. I find it absolutely ludicrous that The Shield got zero noms. That show was awesome all the way through, with only the season before the final season being a bit sluggish. The final season more than made up for it. You couldn't have asked for a better conclusion to a show about cops who live tenuously on the line between good and bad. It was the kind of show that was able to have an "artistic" ending that was still wholly satisfying. If you think that is easy to pull off, go back and watch the last season of the Sopranos. That ending made tons of sense, but wasn't very gratifying. The acting on the Shield this last season was second to none, with great performances and logical character actions from all of the primary actors. I love the Sopranos, I love Lost, I loved Cheers and MASH and Seinfeld, but I can honestly say that the Shield was the best piece of tv work that I have ever witnessed. For it to get totally snubbed is a total joke.

I can't believe that Family Guy actually got nominated, the show has certainly seen better days. Watching even two minutes of it is torture for me.

I'll be rooting for How I Met Your Mother come Emmys time, glad to see that show finally get some love.

"*Hilary Duff will guest on multiple episodes of Gossip Girl's upcoming season, playing a famous actress who tries to escape the limelight while going to NYU, where she becomes Vanessa's roommate. Her first episode will be in early October."

yes

"*Daneel Harris will reprise her role as Rachel on at least 7 episodes of One Tree Hill this fall. Also appearing on the show will be recent 90210'er Jana Kramer, playing the lead model for Brooke's clothing line."

and hell yes

I agree with DT and dusty. Its bull that the Shield did not get a nod. The last season was awesome. Like Dusty i dont watch a lot of other new shows but this show was great. At the very least Walton Goggins should have got nominated for best supporting actor. His work in both seasons 6 and 7 were brillant and some of the best acting ive ever seen. There will never be another show like The Shield. All of the actors were great with there characters, the writing was spectacular, even the way the show was filmed made you feel like you were standing there with them along for the ride.

Family Guy's nomination is worth it just for how much it pisses off the people who hate it. GO SETH!

I never got into the Shield though I have heard it was quite good (I just don't typically care for cop shows).

Parsons absolutely deserves to win-- I think the Christmas episode of Big Bang is the one that proves it best of all

Whoever wins in each of the 'Comedy' categories should be bombarded with pineapples!!!!!

Unless it's Kevin Dillon, glad to see him get some love for Johnny Drama..

I definitely would like to hear your thoughts on Kings. While its been moved to Saturday's to die and be DVRed, its a great show with a great cast. Ian McShane is really good and deserved better.

Also would like to hear your thoughts on Royal Pains.

The Late Late show is becoming the funniest show on television.

The monologue is always funny, and makes you think as well as chuckle along, and maybe a bit more cerebral.

If they stopped doing those stupid skits and instead replaced it with more viewer mail and or more stand up comedy, I'd call it the best late night show.

The White Lines opening was just so uniquely entertaining, that I had to go out and buy the song on Ituens.
