Two Tivos To Paradise 8.07.09: Man vs. TV News
Posted by Al Norton on 08.07.2009
Paula Abdul leaves American Idol, Alyssa Milano returns to primetime, the Seinfeld reunion on Curb, Adam Richman stops by to talk about Man v. Food, PBS fall programming, a Criss Angel giveaway, raves for Web Soup, tons of news and notes, the TV Pick of the Week and more, all in the latest edition of Al Norton's Two Tivos To Paradise!
Hello Friends. A very busy week all around, with multiple interviews running on the site, including Bollywood Hero's Pooja Kumar (yesterday) and Army Wives' Sally Pressman (today); use the links at the bottom to pull them up, and see the end of this column to find out what extra special chat will be up on Monday. I also did 411Movies Fact or Fiction this week, which you can find on the main Movies/TV page as well. Saturday is the annual Futures at Fenway doubleheader, where two minor league Red Sox teams have game at Fenway Park. It's a ton of fun and one of my favorite days of the year. As with most things I really enjoy, I can't wait for the twins to get old enough for me to take them as the day if much more geared towards kids than a regular Sox game.
Man v. Food's Adam Richman drops by to chat later on in the column, an occasion which earned him official "Friend of TTTP" status. What's it take to get such a prestigious honor? The bar is set at three appearances (in the column itself or a separate interview), with an exception or two for those who have gone above and beyond to spread the work about the column. Here is the current list:
Adam Richman (Man v. Food)
Alison Sweeney (The Biggest Loser, Days of Our Lives)
Bill Simmons (ESPN)
Joel McHale (The Soup)
Mark Schwahn (One Tree Hill)
Matt Iseman (Clean House, Sports Soup)
Neal Baer (Law and Order: SVU)
Sally Pressman (Army Wives)
Those on the cusp of getting a TTTP blazer and a key to the executive washroom include Danielle Fishel, Michael Emerson, Grace Park, and the Ikki Twins.
The following is a list of publicity people whose names you might not recognize but whose efforts have helped make the column what it is and therefore have qualified for "Friend of TTTP" status as well: Amanda Ruisi, Michelle Rosenblatt, Michelle Sisco, Mike Liotta, Sarah Fuller, Carrie Simmons, Kannie Yu LaPack, Lee Wallman, Megan Tantillo, Morgan DiStefano, Tracy Speed, and Annie Chen. I am sure I will open next week with a few names I accidently omitted.
Check out the TV Pick of the Week for a cool give away!
Boom boom news.
All My Bags Are Packed, I'm Ready To Go, I'm Standing Here Outside Your Door
Paula Abdul used her Twitter account on Tuesday night to announce that she would not be returning as a judge on American Idol. Abdul, who has been with the show since it started in 2002, was rumored to have come to terms earlier in the evening on a new deal that would have given her a 30% increase in salary but at the last minute asked the producers for $20 million a season. The show's host, Ryan Seacrest, recently signed a 3 year, $45 million extension, and Simon Cowell is thought to be in for a huge payday later this year. Abdul's agent told the LA Times that he thought she wouldn't be returning to the show last month but at the time most thought it was a negotiating ploy. Fox is planning on replacing her on the panel, using celebrity guest judges for the audition process (Victoria Beckham and Katy Perry have already signed on) and then having a permanent person in place when the Hollywood rounds begin.
This is what is known in the business as a lose-lose. Abdul will never do anything that comes close to the popularity of Idol, which has been far and away the most popular show on television since its premiere 9 years ago. While the other big networks will surely be taking meetings with her soon, it would be foolish for them to pony up big bucks in the hopes of catching some of Idol's glory. The odds that she gets the $10_ million that she was offered to stay are less than Hey Paula getting a DVD release.
The other half of the "lose" is Idol's, which has lost a large part of what made the show what it is. Good or bad, she played a major role in who won and lost and her bizarre ramblings and odd, second-grade-romance chemistry with Simon was just as talked about the day after as the performances themselves. Was she worth $20 million? I have no idea since I don't know how much the show actually makes, but there will be a whole round of stories next January about how the show just isn't the same without her.
In my opinion Idol's best bet is not to add another judge and stick with Simon, Kara, and Randy, having faith that it's the show's rags-to-riches format that will keep 20+ million coming back week after week.
THIS JUST IN – So You Think You Can Dance? executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe told the press that he is in talks with Paula Abdul to bring her on as a judge on the upcoming fall season of the popular dance series. This will be the first time SYTYCD has aired out of the summer and could use the bump in publicity that Abdul will surely bring to give it a push as it goes up against a full slate of original programming.
We're Coming To Your Town, We'll Help You Party Down, We're An American Band
Larry David told the Television Critics Association last week that the Seinfeld cast reunion that takes place on the upcoming season of Curb Your Enthusiasm will be based around a fictional Seinfeld reunion project on the show. The storyline goes that Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Michael Richards, and Julia- Louis Dreyfuss all agree to do a reunion special, with Larry back writing, and throughout the (at least) five episodes they appear on we will see the special being put together. Other Seinfeld alumni like Wayne Knight (Newman) are expected to appear as well. When asked if Richard's much publicized racial outburst while performing stand up would be addressed, David said, "it's possible."
Seinfeld fans, of which there are many, should be thrilled with this news as the reunion-within-the show is being written as if it were a real reunion special, and everyone will find out what the characters are up to 11 years later. Considering how big Seinfeld's ratings were, I expect Curb to set series highs all year. In particular I am looking forward to seeing Jason Alexander as George again in that he was the person on the show doing the most acting (i.e. the least like his character) and when I see him on talk shows or other parts there is almost a physical difference between him as George and him as anyone else, including himself. I would love to do see a scene where he goes from himself to George and back again to really appreciate the metamorphosis.
Rising Up, Back On The Streets, Took My Time, Took My Chances
The second season of Travel Channel's Man v. Food kicked off on Wednesday night with all the same food and fun that made the first season so great. I caught up with the show's host – and official "Friend of TTTP" Adam Richman for a brief chat about eating, resting, and the new season.
TTTP: How did you spend your off-season, gastronomically speaking? Was it hard going back to eating regular portions?
Adam Richman: First off, I slept as much as possible - after a whirlwind tour of 18 cities I was exhausted and missing the comforts of home and my bed. I also worked out, lost 22lbs, hugged my Mom, saw some friends around the country, caught up on my DVR'd shows - did I mention sleeping? It was very easy going back to normal portions as that's what I eat when we're not filming. I found myself craving salads, sushi and fruit.
TTTP: Were you and the producers inundated with restaurants wanting you to come film segments? Did you have certain geographic areas in mind when you were lining up season two?
Adam Richman: Oh my gosh yes - BUT THAT IS NOT A BAD THING! I love the fact that the show engenders such a great symbiotic relationship with its viewers. We were narrowing a list of like 60 places down to 20. It was nigh impossible. I think that we don't focus on regions per se - I know we just wanted the widest variety of locales and a greater breadth and variety of challenges and cuisines represented.
TTTP: Having set the food challenge bar so high in season one, was it hard to find new and original challenges this time around? Any places creating challenges with you in mind?
Adam Richman: We've heard that some establishments are creating challenges for the show - which is not only amazing, but deeply flattering and testament to the far-reaching appeal of Travel Channel's Man v. Food. As it stands, there are so many existing challenges out there already, that I think (and hope) we could do 20 seasons! The task for us is finding challenges with a lineage, a real history to them that also have an intriguing angle and are different from other challenges that we've showcased.
TTTP: You got to do The Tonight Show earlier in the week...Did you ever think you'd make the big couch? And for eating?
Adam Richman: Never. It's been a dream for me and to appear on the Tonight Show and to be invited to be on with both Jay and Conan is just superb. No job like this has existed to my knowledge - so to both have this wonderful, weird job and have it bring me face-to-face with two idols / icons of mine is just insane. But insane in a good way - like Salvador Dali.
TTTP: Can you give me a preview of season two?
Adam Richman: Because we make it a point to stay in such close contact with our audience, and truly value and feed upon their feedback on the first season, we're able to bring them more of what they love: even more great locations, challenges and restaurants. The new locations are sweeping and dynamic in scale (Alaska, Hawaii to name a few) and the challenges are even bigger, badder and (as if it were even possible) more delicious than before. We've paid attention to the things that both we and our audience love about Man v Food and are making sure that we focus on those elements constantly. Even within the film crew I travel with, there is a feeling that we're really doing something special - I can honestly say I'd be excited to watch it even if it weren't me on the show! Season One was the beginning of an amazing journey - Season Two takes it all to the next level bringing viewers even more unbridled joy, unfettered exploration and delicious fun.
Don't miss Man v. Food, Wednesdays at 10 pm on Travel.
You Who Are On The Road Must Have A Code That You Can Live By
PBS has unveiled a host of original programming schedule to air over the coming months, with such a wide variety of subject matter than there is the proverbial "something for everyone." A few selections…
*Families Stand Together: Feeling Secure In Tough Times is a prime time Sesame Street special that helps offers assistance to families with young children dealing with not just economic issues but the emotions that can go with them. Elmo, Deborah Roberts, and Al Roker host.
*The National Parks: America's Best Idea is the latest documentary series from Ken Burns, a 12 hour, six part look at some of the most incredible beauty the country has to offer.
*Latin Music USA, a four hour two part documentary narrated by Jimmy Smits that traces the roots of Latin music and its influence on jazz, hip hop, blues, and rock and roll.
*Austin City Limit's new season – its THIRTY FIFTH, featuring concerts by Dave Matthews Band, Ben Harper, Kenny Chesney, and M Ward.
*Nova: Becoming Human, which travels the world to show the latest discoveries in the search for more information on our earliest ancestors.
I am a huge fan of public television and am pretty sure if you spend any time at their web site checking out their full fall/winter schedule you'll find yourself looking forward to more than a few programs.
As an aside, is there anyone who saw the Nova special with the drops of milk while they were growing up that has been able to get that clip out of their heads?!?!?
Afternoon In The Homeroom, They're About To Let You Go, And The Locker Slams On The Plans You Had Tonight
This is part three of a recurring feature here at TTTP where we will be trying to give you an inside look at how a show gets on the air. Where we last left off, Sex Ed: The Series had a finished pilot, and this week series writer and creator Ernie Vecchione talks about the marketing aspects of trying to launch a series.
TTTP: Ok, you've got a finished pilot, so what do you do next? Print a ton of DVD's and send them around?
Ernie Vecchione: That was exactly the plan. Of course, the challenge was getting them into the hands of the right people. And without representation, that proved incredibly hard. But we are relentless.
TTTP: What was the process to get into the LA International TV Festival?
Ernie Vecchione: I had heard about the festival from Tamela at the last minute. I had exactly a day before the deadline to submit the materials. It was a no-brainer. ITVFest is practically the only festival in the U.S. that showcases indie television, which is a rising phenomenon.
Our pilot was longer than the requested length - we had topped out at 61 minutes. I was hoping that the quality of our material would supersede any rule in length. But I knew cutting down the pilot would help our chances in the marketplace. We were aiming for pay-cable networks, which have hour long formats, but if we could to trim it down to a more network-friendly length, like say 44 minutes, it would only increase our chances of selling this show.
When I got the phone call from Jenny Tesler saying ITVFest would love to showcase our show, but we would have to shorten it, I was happy to do so - even though we only had two weeks to do this! The show got better, tighter, and the characters really stood out. It's at 44 minutes now. It was truly a blessing.
TTTP: What were you feeling in the days/hours leading up to a large audience get to see what you had worked on for so long?
Ernie Vecchione: We had previously shown it to groups of people, no more than 12 at a time. When we got word that our 1st screening was sold out, I was incredibly flattered... and nervous. What if no one laughed? No one applauded? On top of that we decided to treat our 1st screening as our World Premiere, with a red carpet and an after party, in order to attract attention to the show. That added a lot of pressure to get things right. Luckily our publicist, Lee Wallman, is a pro. She got things done right.
TTTP: How did the screening go?
Ernie Vecchione: Very smoothly. No one walked out! I stood in the back of the theater the whole time. I went through every conceivable emotion. By the end of the screening I was drained. When it came time for the Q & A, I faced the audience, expecting hostile faces... but everyone loved it. They wanted to know what happens next. They wanted more. They got the show.
TTTP: What happens now?
Ernie Vecchione: We want to spread the word that here's a show, independently made, that can be as funny, moving, and important as any other TV show. We made this on pennies and passion. We want to be developed. We have a vision, a world we created with characters that audiences really respond to. Imagine what we could do, with real money, with real support from a network that believes in us! The sky is the limit.
That's it for now but we'll chat with Ernie over the coming weeks and let you know as soon as there is an update. For more information on Sex Ed: The Series – and to see a trailer - please visit www.sexedtheseries.com.

Turns Out Not Where But Who You're With That Really Matters
The top thing I watched since the last column went to press AKA The Best Of What's Around…In a very short amount of time Web Soup has become one of my favorite half hours of television. Chris Hardwick shines quite brightly as the host, with the writers seeming to have his sense of humor down perfectly. This past Sunday night's outing was the best they have done so far, including this bit that really needs to introduction…
If I have to explain to you why that's funny than I'm afraid there's nothing I can do. Also, how awesome is his tee-shirt?!?
People Say I'm Crazy Doing What I'm Doing. Well, They Give Me All Kinds Of Warnings To Save Me From Ruin
What's flashed before my eyes the last few weeks…As the twins get older (their first birthday approaches) it gets harder to watch as much TV and so I made some cuts this past week, taking The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Drop Dead Diva, and Dark Blue off the season pass. Secret Life just wasn't as entertaining this time around and the other two series, while being fine, just didn't grab me enough for me to keep finding the hours….I had to know that as soon as I praised Royal Pains for not creating only-on-TV obstacles in Hank and Jill's relationship, they would break up the next week. Of course, in this case, the stumbling block is legit in that Hank really did just call off a wedding two months ago and has no plans beyond September. This week things sort of picked up and they seem to heading towards the conventional "ex returns to cause problems" storyline…Great to see Callie Thorne in a TV roll where she keeps her shirt on, as she did on last week's Burn Notice. They even left the door open for her to come back. Hey, don't get me wrong, I am not complaining about her attire during her brilliant performance as Sheila on Rescue Me, but when she stopped by Royal Pains a couple of weeks back and was having sex and losing her top in the first few minutes I was starting to wonder how she picked her scripts…Speaking of Rescue Me, how amazing was the Sheila-Janet showdown from last week? Such a great show…The Closer continued it's very strong run this week and has cemented itself on my list of top 10 dramas. I don't think the show has ever been better…Each week 10 Things I Hate About You improves and at this point I'd have to call it the best thing on ABC Family…Melissa was a very deserving winner of Next Food Network Star. As a lead-in to next season I'd love to see a special that catches up with previous contestants…Not to kiss up to this week's guest star but the return of Man v. Food was awesome; watching Adam sweat during the Four Horseman burger challenge was horrifying and hypnotizing…Mrs. Tivo wanted to make sure I added in that she has greatly enjoyed this year's batch of new Shark Week programming from Discovery…
TV Pick Of The Week The Five Lives of Criss Angel Mindfreak premieres this Wednesday at 10 on A & E, a different spin on the series that has run the last four seasons. This time it's a five part mini-series, with each hour focusing on a new, death defying stunt. Let's go right to the press release for a description of each episode:
"White Death" – Criss takes the "Buried Alive" escape to an unprecedented level as he is shackled and placed in a transparent coffin that is buried in ice and snow. Will he escape or succumb to hypothermia, suffocation or the risk of the ground collapsing on top of him?
"Death Field" - Criss is challenged to safely traverse a field of live explosives in less than five minutes where the risk for serious injury, if not death, is extremely high.
"Terminal Velocity" - Criss attempts to teleport himself twice, first he drops an object from more than 250 feet above the Las Vegas strip and reach the bottom in time to catch it in one continuous camera shot. And in front of hundreds of spectators he attempts to vanish in mid-air and reappear in an impossible location.
"Death Crash" – In his most death-defying illusion to date, Criss will hide in one of five coffins and the spectators, unaware of which coffin he has chosen, will send a merciless driver to smash the coffins into splinters.
"Mass Levitation" – Criss takes levitation to new heights by levitating an entire Las Vegas crowd whose safety he is responsible for. This demonstration requires intense concentration, should he fail some will fall and face certain injury.
Even more exciting news is that we've got three Criss Angel prize packs to give away, each one containing Criss Angel: The Most Dangerous Escapes DVD, Criss Angel Mindfreak: The Complete Season Four DVD, and an A & E tee shirt. Simply email me at twotivostoparadise@yahoo.com with "Criss Angel" in the subject heading and you'll be entered to win!
I know Criss Angel sometimes gets more publicity for who he is dating than he does for his illusion but I have always been fascinated by his work, in particular the flying/levitating thing he does. Put aside any pre-conceived notions you have and just enjoy the thrills.
Don't miss The Five Lives of Criss Angel Mindfreak, Wednesday at 10 pm on A & E.

I would have preferred Jeff to win Next Food Network star and was a bit shocked when he didn't win. I think they just wanted to pick a winner that didn't have a penis.

I don't like American Idol, but I will miss Paula's big rack. Only good thing about the show.

Seinfeld is the greatest show of all time. People who don't watch it are either too young, too dumb, or both and need every joke to be spelled out for them.

You said LA International Television Festival. Do you mean The Independent Television Festival?
