Movies/TV's 3R’s 08.18.09: District 9, Wolverine, Battlestar Galactica, Stewie Griffin and More!

From District 9 ruling the weekend, Robert Downey Jr. as Lestat, and White Chicks getting a sequel to Jerry Seinfeld appearing on Leno, Reno 911 being canceled and the Glenn Beck controversy, 411's Shawn S. Lealos breaks down the Right, wRong, and Ridiculous from the week in Movies/TV!
Welcome to Week 8 of The 3 R's for the Movie/TV world, I am Shawn S. Lealos and you have entered my world.
You read my review of District 9 (if not, read it here), now read what 411 commenters thought about it...
I will admit I was pretty bored about 45 mins in...then the shit got real. I don't think its worth a "9" maybe an "8.6". Original. Fast paced. Shit blows up. A few things that I thought just didnt make sense...but still a very enjoyable film. But what do I know...Just go see it for yourself! :) - Posted By: James E (Guest)
I love the film, and thought it was awesome in every way. Please note, the following did not affect my enjoyment of the movie: I did not like the alien designs. Every scifi movie has aliens that either look like gray humanoids or insects/insectoids. There has to be a director with an original idea for what an alien might look like. It is time for a break from this two stereotypes. - Posted By: Guest#9875 (Guest)
watched earlier tonight & was extremely impressed. i couldn't compare it to any movie i've seen which is a good thing. i thought the creature designs & visual effects were outstanding but the best part was the depth the film had to it as well. i really hope this does well because it is worth your time & money especially if you spent hours waiting to see that transformers 2 trash. - Posted By: mj (Guest)
Great movie, really enjoyed it. Refreshing to watch a sci-fi movie that does not have a cum-ba-yaa, happy clappy with models standing around giving one liners. After seeing this I just hope Spielberg does not make Halo into a family movie like ET. Blood and guts baby, that is what Halo is all about. - Posted By: Danie (Guest)
I'm not saying this is the greatest movie ever, yet everyone should see it. Here's why: if you can watch Transformers, you can watch District 9; and if you didn't watch Transformers, then you're highly intelligent and you SHOULD watch District 9. : ) One of the great things about this movie that hasn't been mentioned is the path of redemption that the main character takes. Biggest nerd ever to the biggest badass ever! - Posted By: Sam! (Guest)
One of the most intelligent sci-fi movies Ive ever seen quite frankly and the best one since the original star wars trilogy. There was a story, great plot and action and explosions, not just for the sake of them being there, but being germane to the story itself. it was an original story idea unlike every remake or rehash being done in hollywood nowadays and it was very well executed by everyone involved. wilkus turns into quite a sympathetic character in the movie and you actually care about what happens to him after a time. and****spoiler alert*** I can see either a sequel(christopher did tell him he promised to be back in 3 years to "fix him" and "free" his brother in district 10 or a prequel explaining how and why the "prawns" came to earth in the first place...I'd gladly sit through either one of those films. All in all it was a great scf-fi movie, and for me the best movie of the summer if not the entire year so far - Posted By: faceman802 (Guest)
And to be fair...
Meh. It was OK. It was unique and yes, it had an intelligent story. But there wasn't enough plot to fill out a film. It was still an overblown action movie... just one that had some interesting social commentary. I'd give it a 7.0. - Posted By: Guest#3885 (Guest)
Without any further ado, here is...
The Right
District 9 Takes Top Spot: I never expected this to happen in a million years. District 9 is one of the smartest to come out in years. It joins this year's Moon as a throwback to science fiction that means more than just giant robots or war movies. It is a movie with a deep underlying story and one that actually makes you think about what you are seeing. It is brilliant and those movies usually fail. The film was shot on an amazingly low $30 million budget but looks like it was made for twice that amount. Its opening weekend was $35 million and a first place finish and for that I applaud you, movie goers. It's nice when something this original can have a happy ending.
Welcome back Mike Judge: In the same week I learned King of the Hill is concluding its run with 4 unaired episodes, I saw this fantastic trailer. Mike Judge is the man responsible for the nineties TV show Beavis and Butthead as well as the cult classic Office Space. His last movie, the underrated Idiocracy was met with the same studio interference as Office Space and I never thought I would see him make another Hollywood movie. Thank God I was wrong.
Wolverine goes East: HELL YES! After a very light take on Wolverine with Origins (and a completely wasted appearance by Deadpool), the success at the box office has guaranteed the franchise a sequel. There is great news here - Christopher McQuarrie has signed on to write the script, great news for the franchise. McQuarrie also wrote the brilliant Usual Suspects and helped with the first X-Men film before voluntarily removing his name from the credits out of respect for fellow screenwriter David Hayter. The better news? Logan is going to Japan, the country where his most exciting adventures took place. He will fight ninjas while trying to uphold the samurai code of honor and respect. This is the Wolverine movie the comic's fans have always wanted. Don't mess this one up boys.
More Robo-geisha: Remember that amazing trailer I clued you guys in on for the Japanese movie Robo-geisha last month? Great news! There is a second trailer. Enjoy...
Sony Pictures: Savior: Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group is in talks to pick up The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. There is also a chance it will get a theatrical release this year! Heath Ledger was set to star in this Terry Gilliam vehicle but died before filming could be completed. His friends Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell all stepped up and replaced Ledger in various scenes which fit in with the fantastical story. Forget the fascination of seeing Ledger's final role, I am excited to see a new Terry Gilliam film. This movie looks like it could be the next Baron Munchausen.
Zombieland Poster: This poster makes me smile.
The wRong
Needless Re-Imagining Underway: I love Bryan Singer and think he did a fabulous job of creating the X-Men movie universe. I also am a big fan of Usual Suspects and think Superman Returns is a good movie as well. Well, his next project is a feature film version of Battlestar Galactica and I would be excited if this was 2001 with his original idea. It has been described as if the Jews had stopped at Mount Sinai and set up Las Vegas. The survivors gave up their hunt for Earth, re-colonized and then the Cylons attack. Awesome, huh? Well, since that time, the greatest sci-fi TV show EVER debuted and just ended after 73 episodes. There is no reason to ever re-invent the series after that bout with perfection but Singer's version is being called a "complete re-imagination." There is no need to re-imagine perfection.
Is there more Blair Witch to come?: In 1999 I saw three new horror movies on back-to-back-to-back weekends. Two of them were really good movies: The Sixth Sense and the excellent Stir of Echoes. The third was the overrated and annoyingly bad Blair Witch Project. The movie was successful thanks to viral marketing and the fresh idea behind the gimmick. At the end of the day, it sucks. There was a sequel that also sucked. Now, ten years later the writer and director of the movies are making an addition to the franchise. They originally thought they might make it look like a Kubrick film (RIGHT!!!) but now think it will be more about what happened after the first movie ended. Here is the thing - I don't care. Let the franchise stay dead.
America shuns Ponyo: The Miyazaki movie has made $169 million worldwide and yet when it debuted in America is only brought in $3.51 million. That is less then The Ugly Truth for God's sake. Even G-Force made $3 million more in its FOURTH FREAKING WEEKEND. Maybe some of the good people who supported District 9 this weekend will give Miyazaki some love next weekend when it goes wider (it only had 972 locations this last weekend). At least Bandslam was ignored also.
Three Stooges will never get made: The Farrelly Brothers (There's Something About Mary) are hitting one obstacle after another. There next movie is a remake of The Three Stooges and the cast looked incredible with Benicio Del Toro as Moe, Sean Penn as Larry and Jim Carey as Curly. First, Penn dropped out because of his self imposed exile from Hollywood. The Farrelly's rebounded by signing the always dependable Paul Giamatti to replace him, only to have Jim Carey drop out next. They just can't seem to catch a break.
Iron Man wants to suck your blood: Wait a minute... I love Robert Downey Jr. The guy is cinema gold. I love how he has rebounded after conquering his demons and his recent roles in both Iron Man and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are amazing. With that said, I can't figure out what they are doing offering him the role of the vampire Lestat in Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles. I loved Tom Cruise in his portrayal of Lestat in Interview with a Vampire but Lestat is a twenty year old man turned into a vampire and I don't see how Downey can pass. He is a great actor but this just might be out of his reach. At least he's a step up from Stuart Townsend in Queen of the Damned.
The Ridiculous
A note to Michael Douglas - It's never too late to abort this: Remember all the way back to - uhh, last week - when I listed Cameron Douglas, the spawn of Michael Douglas, under Ridiculous for his meth arrest? Well, last week his girlfriend was arrested for bringing Douglas an electric toothbrush with seven grams of heroin in the battery compartment. She claimed to be unaware there was heroin in there but a search of her room uncovered glassines with what appeared to be heroin, meth and marijuana. This kid is a freaking joke and brings shame to his father and grandfather every day.
Poltergeist Remake Coming November 24, 2010: And they keep coming, and coming and coming...
The Sub-Mariner?: Are you kidding me? Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) has announced the cinema debut of Prince Namor, The Sub-Mariner. Rights to the character are owned by Universal so he won't be part of the Marvel Universe currently being built around The Avengers. That is fine with me since Namor is more connected with The Fantastic Four but he is a niche hero that would be best as a supporting character in the next F4 movie. I just have to ask, why?
Creatively Bankrupt: The Wayans Brothers and Sony are developing a sequel to the 2004 movie White Chicks.
Jerry O'Connell hits the books: As a new father myself, I can really respect someone who puts his family first. When it is a movie star, I am even more impressed. Jerry O'Connell and his wife Rebecca Romijn-Stamos-O'Connell recently welcomed twin girls into the world. Romign is currently starring on Eastwick so O'Connell is playing a new role - stay at home dad. That isn't all he is doing. Since he is spending the day at home with his girls, he is taking night classes at the Los Angeles Southwestern Law School. When asked about it, he joked "it's either that or play video games until 2am." I give him props both for being a father and raising his girls and also for going back to school.
Stewie Griffin is gay: Let me tell you why this is funny to me. A few weeks back I mentioned how GLADD was blasting certain networks because there were not enough representation of gay characters on network shows. An example is Scy-Fy getting a failing grade because there were not enough gay people on their shows. Now, FOX got a decent grade but not without points taken off for the antics of Family Guy. Shortly after this, the interview with Playboy is released where Family Guy creator Seth McFarland explains that Stewie is in fact gay. This interview had to be done before the GLADD nonsense but the timing is hilarious. Is it news? No, but it made me laugh.
A Reason to watch Jay Leno: Jay Leno will return to television on September 14 in his new time slot and there is actually a reason to watch the unfunny man. For music fans, Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West will be performing "Run this Town," which I couldn't give a crap about. However, his first guest will be Jerry Seinfeld. Seinfeld will be talking about his new NBC reality show The Marriage Ref and more importantly about the Seinfeld reunion on Curb Your Enthusiasm. It might be one of the only times I care to watch Leno, so this is his one chance to make an impression on me.
The wRong
Reno 911! signs off: Actor Thomas Lennon tweeted some distressing news last Thursday. Just in time for me to finally dig into the excellent TV show The State on DVD, the actor's recent TV show Reno 911 has been cancelled. The show lasted 6 seasons, 88 episodes and a movie. It is now time to say goodbye to the Reno PD, which also included The State alum Ben Garant and Kerri Kenney.
The Ridiculous
More Jon and Kate madness: Last Thursday Kate Gosselin showed up unannounced at their house and Jon denied her entrance. She called the police and they responded to the call and had to calm the tensions between the two. See, Kate was pissed Jon was allowing a 23-year old cocktail waitress to babysit the kids. Jon's attorney said he sent the babysitter to bathe the kids while this was going on but damn if these assholes aren't destroying the childhood of those cute kids. I hate both of these people.
Kourtney Kardashian is almost as dumb as Kim: I put this here because I had to work at my computer while my wife watched their wretched TV show marathon. Here is Kourtney's excuse for her unplanned pregnancy. "This probably sounds so dumb, but there's so many times I'll forget to take my pill and I don't think it's that big of a deal," she said. "It's just so stupid." Yes, yes you are. To make it even worse their step dad, Olympic Gold Medalist Bruce Jenner (how the hell did I not know this???), is angry his daughters are talking about the baby like it was a puppy on the way instead of a child. These girls are idiots. It's no wonder Reggie Bush ran far, far away from the family.
Glenn Beck loses his insurance: Glenn Beck is a radio and television host who stated that President Obama has "a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture." This was in response to the Henry Gates arrest incident and Obama's remark that there is a long history of racism in this country by law enforcement officials. Well, Beck has cost his network and his show money. Geico and Lawyers.com have both pulled advertising from the show. Fox has said the show will not be hurt because they will just rotate other advertisers into the spot but Geicko spent a quarter-billion dollars in the first half of 2009 for advertising so that is a tough break. Additionally, Proctor & Gamble, Progressive Insurance and SC Johnson said their ads should never have run during Beck's programming. A Progressive rep said they didn't want their ads during a show that was possibly "extremely offensive." When asked about the comment, Beck slightly backed off and said "I'm not saying he doesn't like white people. I'm saying that he has a problem, This guy is, I believe, a racist." Here is proof from the horse's mouth that he did in fact say Obama hates white people:
I don't "get" Jeremy Piven or Entourage, and that pretty much excludes me 100% from the movie's target audience. - Owain J. Brimfield
I am not picking on Owain here but based on a lot of what I have read lately, people only seem to be talking about Piven's role on Entourage when discussing his acting. I just don't get that. The guy has been around for years and has given us some great roles, even before Entourage. He was in Say Anything... , The Grifters and Singles before his breakout role in the very funny PCU in 1994. Following that, it was more supporting roles in Heat, Grosse Point Blank, Black Hawk Down and the underrated dark comedy Very Bad Things. In 2003, he starred in Old School as the evil school administrator, a role made even better based on his performance as the rebellious student in PCU. It was after all this he earned his role on Entourage. Jeremy Piven is great on Entourage but that role should not solely define whether you like him or not.
From my District 9 Review: Went to the 12:00 show and left half way through this movie bored me to death.. - Guest#2220 (Guest)
I will give anyone the benefit of the doubt when they leave a movie they don't like (or get). However, if a person leaves at the halfway mark, their opinion of the movie has ZERO merit. You can't judge a movie based on part of it, you need to see the entire movie to have a qualified opinion. I understand some people being bored with the start of this movie, there are not giant robots running around blasting things. District 9 requires you to actually think and those people are rewarded with one of the best sci-fi movies you will see.
1 - District 9...i will download it before i decide to see it in a theatre. I had hopes for it before i noticed that jackson was attached. i still have hopes for it, but jackson is a talentless hack who got lucky with LOTR and with George Lucas open sourcing the CG technology that made them possible.
2 - conan o'brien should go back to the simpsons. not only were his years on that show the funniest, but it would also make it possible that someone who could do something funny when hosting an interview show could take over. - Posted By: Darth Mortis (Guest)
Man, I can't disagree more with this entire comment. First of all, Peter Jackson is not a talentless hack. He may have got lucky to direct LOTR but he knocked it out of the park with his work on that franchise. Even before LOTR he made great movies from Heavenly Creatures to the very fun The Frighteners. I believe Sam Raimi is the more talented director, but the two men are cut from the same cloth and Jackson is one of the most visually talented artists working in Hollywood today. As for Conan O'Brien, I do think his work on The Simpsons was great but to allude he is not funny on his talk shows is ludicrous. His late show was so much better than any other late night show and he consistently brought the funny. I haven't seen his new gig but if it is not as funny as his last show, it is not because he isn't funny.
I hate gay Stewie. Nothing against gay people. I just prefer Stewie as a psychopathic evil genius rather than a one note gay joke.

you know you shouldn't completely hate on bandslam. you obviously didnt see it but go to nikki finke's site and read the article about bandslam and how it was compltely mismanaged with its advertising and isnt the movie they sell it as and you will find out it actually is a good movie that got shafted because they wanted to disney-fy it.

I thought he hated his mother so much because he was gay? Isn't that the reason behind stewie. And he's been pretty gay since the beginning maybe you just didnt notice it. (stewie eating a bowl of cereal with retraded horse sperm instead of milk) lol yeah he's pretty gay. Plus didn't stewie from the future pretty much say he was gay too?

Personally for me the news of a proposed Blair Witch thrid installment would go in the right category, but to eah his own. I will agree that the sequel should never have been made. Not even the great Jeffrey Osbourne could save that one.
Posted By: Mario (Guest) on August 18, 2009 at 03:23 AM
Yeah... I meant Jeffrey Donovan, not Osbourne.

I was watching the Colbert Report and he was talking about Glenn Beck losing advertising dollars. Sargento's was one of the companies and Colbert said that they should put him in ads that read "Loved by crackers."

GLADD is getting as annoying as PETA. You know, because having more gay characters on tv shows is SUCH an important issue. Layfayette from True Blood needs to bitch slap the hell outta them.

Ponyo is in limited release. It is only playing on 750 screens, not 2,000 to 3,000. That may be the reason it only took in $3.5 million this past weekend.

Why aren't there more white people on any of Tyler Perry's shows? Is it because the show is about a black family? Still - couldn't they introduce a few white characters (a redneck, an insurance salesman). You know - something to keep the white man happy since they are underrepresented on that show.
Sorry GLAAD - the reason that some shows don't have gay people on them is because it doesn't fit into what the show is about. And guess what - when a network gears themselves towards one demographic area - they probably won't be including a lot of characters outside of their target audience.
The problem is - the shows (and networks) that feature primarily gay characters (or people that are sympathetic to the gay community) lack in overall ratings. Hence - why include something that will hurt my ratings - TV is a business.

I take it that Seth McFarlane calling Stewie "gay" is tongue-in-cheek. Stewie has been straight in some episodes and gay in others. It just depends on the mood of the writers in any given episode.
Posted By: NoirFan (Guest) on August 18, 2009 at 11:08 AM
"Plus didn't stewie from the future pretty much say he was gay too? "
No, future Stewie ends up sleeping with a female co-worker and getting fired as a result. (However, Meg is transgender in the future. LOL) In another episode Stewie is in love with his baby-sitter and in another he's in love with that girl toddler. So, it really depends on the episode as to whether Stewie is gay or not. It's not consistent.

I agree and disagree. Family Guy has sucked since it was brought back and making Stewie completely gay isn't gonna save it. However changing him back to megalomaniac who is also gay might help it suck less. Keeping Stewie as the go to gay joke (enjoying horse semen, trying to screw Brian's son, etc.) seems worse toward gays than better.

Although I am conservative to the core, Glenn Beck (and Rush Limbaugh)is a complete idiot. I remember channel surfing and coming across him crying for the cameras because he was so worried about the Obama regime's attack on *his* America. Ugh...

You kind of missed the point here. In the earlier seasons (the first 3 or 4 I think) Stewie was a megalomaniac who hated his mother and wanted to kill things
Only recently has he been the gay character. Who often borderlines straight as well
Posted By: Guest#9157 (Guest) on August 18, 2009 at 02:06 PM
Personally, i'm glad that reno 911 got cancelled. i used to love that show, until all the characters got inconsistent. it's the same reason i hate family guy. plus, they killed off some of the most important and funny characters so fuck em.

Boy, does Glenn Beck have it wrong.
Just because he attended a church led by a racist pastor(who preached regularly that the government created AIDS to exterminate all blacks in America, among other insane racist rants)for twenty years... or calling his grandmother (the only person who loved him enough to raise him after being abandoned by his Communist father and, later, his Communist mother) a "typical white person" whose ideas of people different than herself "bred" into her... or that he cracked jokes about his low bowling score being comparable to that of Special Olympics competitors... DOES NOT provide ANY evidence at all that Obama sees himself genetically superior to anyone else.
Nope. No evidence at all.

I think what he meant was , If you didnt see the whole thing just say i didnt like the way it was going so I walked out and didn't see it. You cant say it sucked unless you sat through the whole thing. There have been a bunch of times where I liked a movie then they lost me at the end. I cant say the movie sucked because I hated the ending but I can say it was a good movie I just didnt like the ending..... Thanks for clarification on gay Stewie to all the other posters. Since Alot of the family guy I watch is based on reruns on TV i'm not really sure what episodes were from what season. Maybe Stewie is bi? :) he's a ladies man (sexy party) with a few gay tendencies (like shaving his coin purse) although that may go either way :)
Posted By: Alfredo Lara Jr. (Guest) on August 18, 2009 at 07:37 PM
Shouldn't Cartman from South Park count? Wasn't there an ENTIRE episode about him putting his wiener in Butters' mouth? Oh wait...according to the GLADD that doesn't make him gay, just confused.
