Babes, Bombs, and Blockbusters Movie News Report 9.01.09
Posted by Mike Gorman on 09.01.2009

As a huge fan of Marvel and Disney, this is a big week! Who knows what the future holds? Today we see what "secrets" are leaking already in addition to your usual news Bombs and one heck of a Babe of the Week.

Australian glamour model Emily Scott is your Babe of the Week. Emily has been featured in the UK, Australian and American versions of magazines such as FHM, Stuff, Playboy and Maxim. In addition to her modeling work she also tours the UK as a club DJ and was recently kicked off the Australian version of "Dancing with the Stars."

Check out these latest Hollywood news bombs!

In case you missed it!

Monday morning it was announced that the Disney Co. would be purchasing Marvel Entertainment in a deal worth $40 billion. The internet was soon abuzz with news sites and fans speculating on what this will mean for the future of both companies. As for why this purchase occurred, Disney head Bob Iger was quoted saying the following on CNBC, "We'd like love to attract more boys, and we think Marvel's skew is more in boys' direction. Although there's a universal appeal, we think, to a lot of their characters and a lot of their story. Just look at Spider-Man and Iron Man films. This is a great fit. But we obviously know Disney has a lot of products that are more girl-skewed than boy. And we'd like the opportunity to go after boys more aggressively." Hearing this from Iger I think this could be a truly genius movie on Disney's part. As a season pass holder at Disneyland and fan of the Disney Co., one complaint I often hear is the focus is too often on the Princess properties and young girls, leaving the boys out. I think this acquisition could indeed be used to create some more focus on the boys, not forgetting that the population of girls/women getting into comics is also clearly on the rise. I do some speculating about the results of this transaction in this week's Top Ten List.

Whatchu gonna do?

Columbia Pictures has tapped newbie Peter Craig to pen a script for a third Bad Boys film. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the studio would ideally like to see director Michael Bay, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return. No deals have been worked out yet to bring any of them on board so this project seems to be in a wait & see holding pattern. With a fair amount of fizzling blockbusters of late, I can see this idea having some legs when you look at the success of the first two films. If they cannot get the original stars or production staff back this might just have "Direct to DVD" stamped all over it.

Rambo V is a go!

Variety is reporting that the fifth Rambo film has been greenlit with Sylvester Stallone attached to star in and direct the sequel. Variety adds, "The upcoming project's storyline revolves around Rambo fighting his way through human traffickers and drug lords to rescue a young girl abducted near the U.S.-Mexico border." Does there really need to be a plot after the last one? Guns, explosions and gore seemed to be the story of the last film and look how well it did. Stallone will be able to write this one in his sleep I am sure.

Is the third time the charm?

After a lackluster opening weekend for the second film in Rob Zombie's Halloween reboot, it is a bit surprising to see that the Weinstein Company will be going ahead with a third chapter, this time in 3D. According to the Los Angeles Times, the studio already has a new director lined up for the project as Zombie will not be involved. The last time someone attempted a third film in the Halloween series we got the delightfully terrible (sarcasm noted) "Season of the Witch." Are we doomed to repeat history here? I hope not. Wait, I meant to say, probably so.

Cage is Angry

Director Patrick Lussier, of My Bloody Valentine will be returning to the 3D arena with Drive Angry, a "revenge action film" starring Nicolas Cage. The Nu Image/Millenium Films production focuses on a man chasing the people who killed his daughter and have kidnapped her child. Production on this bloody thriller is set to begin of April. 3D films are all over the place now it seems and this one could be a unique take. We know it won't be opening at Cannes but it sounds like it will be a fun ride for us all.

Two horror movie sequels were battling at the box office this weekend and their not so stellar reviews got me thinking about some of their predecessors in that genre.

Jaws 4: The Revenge: We're supposed to believe that one family of sharks would track down and systematically kill the human family that stopped their matriarch from terrorizing a New England island. This time, all the way to the Bahamas. Sure. Right. Sounds great. Busted!

Dawn of the Dead(1978): Romero kept us on the edge of seats as the zombie apocalypse raged on. I speak of course of the original, not the remake. Who didn't want to live in a mall after seeing this one?'buster!

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge: Freddy possesses a teenage guy and makes him kill people. Much more messed up than that simple description this one brought Freddy out of the place he is at his best, the dream world. Busted!

Aliens: Sigourney Weaver once again kicked ass and so did the bad ass creepy aliens. Builds on the original. ‘buster!

Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2: Thinking about this one makes me queasier than the camera work did in the first one. So not necessary.Busted!

Friday the 13th VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan: A complete disaster with most moments keyed to cheesy gimmicks. They don't even get to Manhattan until the last moments of the film. Plus we are supposed to believe they could sale from Crystal Lake to New York City?Busted!

Scream 2: The franchise that revitalized the horror genre used this one to send up the sequel. They followed all the "rules" and were quite successful. 'buster!

Leprechaun 4: In Space: Perhaps it is the ":" in the name that wrecks sequels, or the number "4" (See Jaws 4 above). Or it is just a novelty film stretched way too thin when brought into space? Either way, this one will make you demand the 90 or so minutes of your life back.Busted!

So Disney is buying Marvel… cue hysteria! Or not. However you feel about this purchase you have to admit that there are definitely some interesting possibilities out there now. How will the marketing machine that is Disney affect the day to day operation of Marvel Entertainment? Is anyone else psyched about Pixar getting involved with some Marvel properties? Who knows what the future will bring but for now I will present you with my Top Ten Unconfirmed Rumored Results of the Mouse Buying Marvel!

10. Fantastic Four vs. The Incredibles film announced.
4 on 4 (well 5 with the baby Incredible), this one seems like a pretty fair team up. Hope the writers can keep straight who belongs on which team seeing as there are copy cat powers all over the place. Personally I look forward to the rumored love scene between Mr. Fantastic and Mrs. Incredible.

9. Sad news for Mickey
Minnie will be leaving him for Lockjaw of the Inhumans. She's always had a thing for the strong silent type and who wouldn't choose a teleporter over a mouse that can pilot a Steamboat?

8. Hannah Montana to join the Great Lakes Avengers
She would fit in perfectly with the GLA for several reasons. First, her power to convince people she is someone else by putting on a wig is ridiculous enough for their requirements. And second, she is definitely someone who should disappear and no one fades into obscurity faster than the GLA!

7. Mary Poppins and Peter Pan revealed as mutants
During next summer's big comic crossover event, "Mouse Reign," we will learn that Mary Poppins and Peter Pan are mutants who will have to turn to the X-Men for sanctuary when TinkerBell and Burt turn out to be Sentinels.

6. New Gear for Marvel Employees
Marvel Comics writers and artists will now need to refer to themselves as Imagineers and will be forced to wear mouse ears and Mickey gloves at all times in the office. Though it appears several of their artists have been wearing gloves while drawing for years!

5. Great Team-ups ahead
Namor will definitely come in handy the next time that Nemo goes missing. And I hear that the Punisher is going after the Hunny dealing Kingpin in the 100 Acre Woods. There will also be a new animated film where Emma Frost of the X-Men help the Princesses update their wardrobes.

4. Goofy and Donald Duck MAX Series revealed
They've always seemed like more than friends and Warren Ellis will be ripping these two icons out of the closet next fall.

3. Doctor Strange finds a new Sorcerer Supreme and a new love
Will Cinderella's Fairy Godmother be able to make it as the new Sorceress Supreme in a world without talking mice or magic pumpkins? With Stephen Strange at her side she will definitely succeed, at least until midnight.

2. Cryogenics take center stage
The recently deceased Captain America will be found buried in cryogenic stasis in the Disneyworld Rose Garden, next to none other than Walt Disney himself. When both men are revived will they be allies or bitter enemies (C'mon, you all know what they say about Disney and who Cap fought in WW II…)? Tune in next Fall to find out!

1. Wolverine, Wolverine, Wolverine!
Disney is known for over saturating the market with their characters and who better to fit in with them than the king of over saturation himself, Wolverine. Immediately animatronic Wolverines are being added to every attraction at the Disney Parks around the globe. In order to make him a little more kid friendly however, they are replacing his cigar with a churro (A park staple!) and his claws will officially be referred to as "tickle sticks."

Keep your eyes peeled next week for some real info as the details of this deal start to solidify.

Apparently people are giving some deep thought to a Marvel/Disney mash up… at least this person on You Tube is:

Did you see what Todd wrote over in the Hush Hush News?

"have either of you men involved in this poptart war ever tried the Apple strudel pop-tart? I think if you tried them, you wouldn't be having this war."

That's like Guam interjecting into the USA/Soviet Union Cold War. Apple Strudel Pop Tarts? WAR CINNAMON BROWN SUGAR!

BTW, Great Top 10!
