411 Fact or Fiction Movies/TV 09.11.09: Week 194
Posted by Ben Piper on 09.11.2009
Will 9 be the best animated movie of the year? Are people stoked about the prospect of a Pixar/Marvel big screen collaboration? Will Whiteout be a superior action thriller? Are people interested in Bad Boys 3 if the main participants return? 411's Matthew Motiuk and Tim O'Sullivan debate these and other topics in week 194 of 411 Fact or Fiction: Movies/TV!
And we're back! Yup, you are in store for some Fact or Fiction. This week Matthew Motiuk and Tim O'Sullivan are here for you to kick around. Let's see what they have to say…
1. 9 will be the best animated film of the year.
Matthew Motiuk:Fact. In a year filled with a couple really strong animated movies and a lot of sub-par ones, this one stands out among the rest. It's a completely different style and story than the rest. It looks absolutely beautiful and the trailers at least make the movie look like it will be an action-packed ride the whole movie. Part of it is probably just how good the trailer is, but I honestly think this has the potential to be an amazing movie, and definitely the best animated one of 2009. The Pixar elite will of course say that Up trumps this easily, but for me, Up is nothing new. It's typical Pixar, a typical story, while this breaks into new territory and looks like it will do it well.
Tim O'Sullivan:Fiction. I have only seen the trailers for this and Up, so it's always hard to comment with any sort of confidence, but in my opinion the latter looks like a much better movie. 9 could be one of those interesting and freaky movies that garners a healthy portion of enthusiasm because it's quirky (oooh) and different (double oooh), but from what I've seen and read about Up it may have to settle for second best this year.
Score: 0 for 1
2. The most exciting thing about Disney acquiring Marvel Comics is the prospect and possibility of a Marvel/Pixar big screen collaboration.
Matthew Motiuk:Fiction. I honestly don't think I have a most exciting thing about the Disney/Marvel deal, besides maybe the potential for a Kingdom Hearts-type video game with Marvel replacing Final Fantasy. Whatever I'm looking forward to, it's not this. Pixar has its niche and it does it very well, but I don't think it's overly compatible with the Marvel set. Maybe there's some comic somewhere that would work, but none that I know of. Pixar makes pretty, wholesome movies aimed toward families. Marvel produces burdened superheroes who fight crime and are aimed at young men. If this did ever happen, I think it would miss both marks, and not really succeed in any way.
Tim O'Sullivan:Fiction. I agree with Motiuk here. There's not much to get excited about in any aspect of the deal. If they made glossy animated movies of the comic book stories then I wouldn't watch them. If they released different types of games because of the deal, then I wouldn't play them. If they made an animated porno of Hulk f**king Spiderman, then I wouldn't watc.....actually wait a minute, that could actually be funny. The point is that the deal doesn't interest me.
Score: 1 for 2
3. Sorority Row will be terrible.
Matthew Motiuk:Fact. Yeah, I can see this one being pretty bad, at least if the trailer is anything to go by (and it usually is, to some extent). First off, the cast is entirely made up of attractive young women in a sorority, a fairly transparent attempt to reel in as many young men as they can, and none of them are particularly big names. Couple that with the rather unimpressive trailer and the fact that it doesn't look like it will be breaking any boundaries in horror, or really doing anything original for that matter, and I'd say you've got a flop on your hands. But who knows? Maybe Carrie Fisher will be just fantastic.
Tim O'Sullivan:Fact. Wow, this was a bad week for me to get involved in Fact or Fiction - seriously. This is another thing that doesn't interest me one bit. I can't fake it. This is my truth. I f**king loathe movies like this with a passion, which is a burden considering the missus seems to be intrigued by every bullshit modern horror that comes out. Then again, she hates me watching football all the time (even though it's my job, but whatever), so I guess it evens out. Anyway, I've gone off on a tangent. The point is that it'll be f**king terrible, the acting will be over-the-top, and the production will be as pathetically gratuitous as ever.
Score: 2 for 3
Switch!!!
4. Another Blair Witch movie is unwarranted and unnecessary.
Tim O'Sullivan:Fact. I'm actually crying here. Real tears, and they're pissing down my cheeks like an angry river. These movies suck so, so, so, so, so, so bad! To answer, YES, it is unwarranted. YES, it is unnecessary. The first movie was hideously overrated and this will be much of the same. If it happens, I hope it makes no more than $67 at the box office.
Matthew Motiuk:Fact. I think you'll be hard pressed to find someone who thinks another one of these is actually a good idea. I mean, come on. The movie was a joke in every circle for years after it was released, and now it's just fallen out of everyone's consciousness. And even though the handy-cam style has had some success with Cloverfield, I still think this would be a terrible idea.
Score: 3 for 4
5. Even if Michael Bay, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence all agreed to return, you would not be interested in Bad Boys 3.
Tim O'Sullivan:Fiction. Oh, I would. I would be all over that glossy piece of popcorn bullshit like a mother f**king rash. The first movie is very good, the sequel is ridiculous but fun, and the third would be welcomed as long as Smith brings some enthusiasm to the table. You've got to love Smith. Hancock, Seven Pounds, I Am Legend, I Robot and Hitch have all been pretty crap movies, but I still find it very hard to dislike him. It would be good to see him in a movie like this again, believe it or not. I think it could be fun.
Matthew Motiuk:Fact. I'm a fan of ridiculous action movies and even I don't want to see that. Maybe it's my borderline annoyance with Martin Lawrence, maybe it's how over-the-top these movies were, maybe it's Michael Bay, I don't know. I differ from Mr. O'Sullivan, not on the fondness of Will Smith, because he is a damn fine actor and likable at that, but on his direction. I think I actually prefer Smith's serious roles. I loved I, Robot and I Am Legend, and even though I despised Seven Pounds, Smith was excellent in it. It would be nice to see Smith in a more action-oriented movie, maybe, but not this one.
Score: 3 for 5
6. Whiteout will be a superior action thriller.
Tim O'Sullivan:Fiction. Superior to what? Either way, I'd never heard of this movie, so I watched the trailer before writing this. Beckinsale is hot, but I'm not 14 anymore - I can't base the potential of a movie on the hotness of the lead actress. 'Action Thriller' is such a powerful-sounding genre, but the trailer to this didn't make it look that spectacular. I want an 'Action Thriller' to grab my balls and try to rip them off. This doesn't look like it'll even tickle them.
Matthew Motiuk:Fiction. This may be good, this may be bad, but it's not going to change the world of cinema in any way. Most likely, this will be an average thriller, nothing special but nothing terrible, either. I think Beckinsale has proven over the years that she's more than just a pretty face, that she can carry a movie, but in a thriller, the story is far more important than the acting, and I just don't see this knocking anything out of the park.
Final Score: 4 for 6
Bonus Non Fact or Fiction Question: What was your favorite movie of this past summer?
Tim O'Sullivan: Is summer over? ***looks outside window to see gray skies at 3:30 pm*** Yes, it's over. Good question, then. Nothing has gripped me to the level where I would give it the 'best summer movie' accolade. Public Enemies was good if a tad undewhelming. Moon was very good, but not a five-star classic or anything. Inglorious was okay. I haven't seen Hurt Locker yet, so I can't jump on that bandwagon. Star Trek didn't give me the same awkward chubby as it did everyone else. I'm probably forgetting something good, or maybe I'm not, but until I remember it I don't think I can answer this.
Matthew Motiuk: This summer had some great offerings, and a lot of not-great offerings, but hands down the winner of the summer goes to The Hangover. I honestly didn't expect it, believe me. I expected a funny comedy, maybe a really funny comedy, but not the best movie of the summer. And yet it was. I know people of all ages and types who loved it, and I found myself laughing the entire way through it and impatiently waiting for its DVD release because I cannot wait to see it again, and I know I've missed and forgotten so many great parts. Besides that? Angels & Demons. Loved the book, and while the movie didn't surpass it by any means, it was still amazing.

Why the fuck does every dork on the planet think that if Pixar made a Marvel movie, it would be a pussified family version of whatever character it was based on? And a Kingdom Hearts type crossover video game is what you hope for?! Jesus...

What a pathetic article.... You have some Disney/Marvel haters ragging on the Disney Marvel deal while at the same time, saying how great 9 was, when the movie was absolutely horrible....

"And who cares if Sority row sucks? It has hot women getting killed.Grow up virgin neards."
But isn't a person excited about a movie because "It has hot women getting killed" the ultimate definition of a virgin nerd?

The Blair Witch Project is a masterpiece. It utilizes great atmosphere and doesn't rely on cheap tactics or gore to be "scary". Its psychological horror at its finest, and also personal, best viewed alone in the dark. People cried about how it wasn't typical, and so the sequel was a more typical horror film, not as good as the first but still a bit underrated. I'd love to see a return of the franchise.

How does someone who has only seen previews and read reviews of 9 and Up come to a conclusion that one is better that the other? How does someone who does not watch movies get into fact of fiction?

Put the kool-aid down kiddo. The first film blew chunks the second film ate the chunks and blew them again.

Somebody should explain to this Tim O'Sullivan person that the first indication of a person who is very uneducated is when they use curse words alot. How the fuck many times does he say fuck in his writings.
C'mon, some of the writers on here are pretty good and pretty talented. So you can't tell me that someone like him is the best you have for this column. Nothing makes a person look stupider than when they rely on cursing that much.

'I really hate fact or fiction. '
then stop reading.
there, isn't that easy? and it will save you thousands of dollars in therapy when you hit your late teens.
9 was like a Peter Jackson movie...all style, no substance. i am not saying don't see it, i can't even say i would not recommed it to someone but i would say don't expect anything more than pretty pictures if you do go see it. if that is all you go in expecting, you won't be disappointed cause that is all you will get.

So nobody, while looking at the Disney-Marvel deal, hopes that Howard the Duck is retconned as coming to earth from Duckburg (Disney characters get their own part of the Multiverse).

Blair Witch Project = A bunch of kids who grew up in the city, who then get lost in the woods. But.. to each their own!
