Babes, Bombs, and Blockbusters Movie News Report 9.15.09
Posted by Mike Gorman on 09.15.2009
Who just confirmed his role in Spiderman 4? Which Watchmen joins the Wolverines? What are the Ten Types of Movie Nazis? Check out this week’s edition of the 3Bs News Report to answer these questions and more.
The 3Bs News Report staff is happy to report that they have arrived safely at their new east coast headquarters. The exact location must be kept a secret so the armies of Cinnamon Pop Tart Zombies out there can be kept away. This raging battle will however have no effect on the column's quality delivery.
After getting her start on MTV's "The Real World: San Diego," the Babe of the Week, Jamie Chung, has gone on to cameo on several TV shows including Castle and Greek and had supporting roles in films like Dragonball Evolution and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. She can next be seen in the recently released slasher flick, Sorority Row. While she may not be up for an Oscar anytime soon, we are glad to have her gracing this week's column.
Check out today's news bombs!
Back and bigger than ever
Bruce Campbell told Access Hollywood that he has been asked to return for the fourth Spider-Man flick. While his appearances in the first three films were just barely cameos, Campbell says that this time around the filmmakers have bigger plans for him though he had no real details at this point. Spider-Man 4 is to begin shooting in January 2010. Could he be the lizard (one of the rumored villains for this venture)? Dr. Connors has been seen before but who says there cannot be a recast? Campbell would bring a great manic energy to the role.
Will this one be set in space?
Dark Horizons reports that Harrison Ford is talking Indy 5. According to Ford, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have "agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern and George is actively at work. If the script is good, I'll be very happy to put the costume on again." Hopefully this means that this next film will not be a Shia LeBeouf led Indy Jr. adventure that ends up in space!
The Comedian to join Red Dawn?
Jeffrey Dean Morgan, recently in Watchmen, is in talks to join the cast of the remake of the 1980's Cold War classic, Red Dawn. Dawn is about a group of American teens who rebel when the US is invaded by Russian and Chinese forces. Variety reports that Morgan would play, "the leader of the U.S. Special Forces team who discovers the teens' stronghold while behind enemy lines," which seems similar to the role originated by Powers Boothe. Interesting because it is the Boothe role that I immediately pictured Morgan filling when his name was mentioned. Seems like a role that Morgan could easily portray though it is the rest of the cast that I am still not sure about.
McAvoy and Penn to star in Redford's next project
James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn will co-star next in Robert Redford's The Conspirator. The film will be a historically accurate portrayal of the events following the assassination of President Lincoln. Penn's character, Mary Surratt is the only women amongst the group charged with conspiring to kill the president. McAvoy will play her defender. Sounds like an interesting project. The production group behind the film firmly believes that there are stories in our history that are as gripping as any fiction. I believe that a presidential assassination definitely fits that bill.
9… 10… Never Sleep Again
Several members of the team that brought us the excellent documentary His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th are regrouping to tackle the man of our nightmares, Freddy Krueger. Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy will be narrated by and star Freddy's original nemesis Heather Langenkamp, aka Nancy. Filming began this August in and around LA, and should be released sometime next year. Producers are promising the "definitive look at the making of this iconic horror series and the enduring legacy of its wise-cracking, razor-gloved villain." Cannot wait to see this one!
Season Two of HBO's "True Blood" came to a close Sunday night and left us with as many questions as the jam packed hour answered. Here's a quick look at the episode's highlights. SPOILER'S AHEAD!
The Vampire Queen Loves Yahtzee?: How egalitarian of her. I dug her take on this once cheesy party game. 'buster!
Bon Temps' Selective Amnesia: How convenient that everyone "forgets" the near disasters of the past season. Such an overused cliché. Would have been more interesting to see them all freak out and deal with it.Busted!
Arlene's Kids: They survive on their own once their mom goes as creepy eyed. Later, they are shown to know more than their simpleton mother. Go kids!. 'buster!
The Egg: Lots of build up online over the last two weeks about this ovoid. Turns out it was just an ostrich egg. Like many True Blooders, I was hoping for more but pleased at the "non-twist." ‘buster & Busted!
Sookie Goes Wild!: Finally someone took down that creepy meat man and breaks the egg!.'buster!
Sam stops Maryann: First he becomes an ox to deceive her, then a nice fist through the chest. He deserved to be the one who took her down.'buster!
"Scrambled" Eggs: Last season Jason was presumed to be a killer by Andy. Now Andy covers it up when Jason actually does kill the confessing Eggs. You gotta feel bad for Tara, she can never catch a break! Busted!
Bill's proposal and Sookie's response: Interesting way to end a crazy season. Cut through the supernatural chaos with a touching moment. Well acted and felt truthful to both characters.'buster!
The kidnapping: Who took Bill? Was it Eric? The Queen? The Church? Why do we have to wait so long for an answer!!.Busted!
Inglorious Basterds got me thinking about other films featuring Nazis and their evil ilk. When I began to really get into it I realized that movie Nazis share many characteristics, their ignorance, racial intolerance, etc. but there were also some things that set them apart. It seems that there are all kinds of movie Nazis and here I present you with ten varieties I have encountered. This is the Top Ten List of Different Movie Nazis:
10. Dr. Strangelove
Peter Sellers made some unique acting choices and showed us that some films feature comedic Nazis. His character was a wacky mess taking the idea of a master race to the next level. The playwright in The Producers was in a similar vein.
9. Chicken Run
The animated poultry of Chicken Run live in a coop run like a concentration. Here we see the metaphoric Nazi. There are no swastikas or uniforms, but the message is clear. Watership Down presented a more serious take on this dramatic topic.
8. The Sound of Music
In this classic musical we meet the next variety, the singing-sympathetic Nazi. His girlfriend was sixteen going on seventeen when young Rolfe made his choices and stuck to his alliance to the Nazis. He had the chance to reform and run away with the Von Trapps. Forever we will wonder, what if?
7. Dead Snow
As if the Nazis weren't ridiculous enough in reality, in this film a group of skiing friends accidentally unleashes one of the most ridiculous forms of movie Nazi, the Nazi zombie. Evil and hungry for the flesh of the living, the Nazi zombie has existed in multiple forms over the years if you can believe it. Dead Snow is the latest film in this niche market.
6. The Dirty Dozen The Dirty Dozen is a star filled military buddy film that pits a rag tag band of lifer prisoners against a fortress of high ranking Nazi soldiers. In this film they are the sitting duck Nazis who don't become especially relevant until the last third of the film when the platoon completes their training and embarks on their mission.
5. American History X
Here we see the neo-Nazi with chilling performances by Edward Norton and Edward Furlong. This film shows just how easy it is for someone to be brought into a community of hate and how hard it is to escape in the end. Once you see this film you will never look at a street curb the same way.
4. Schindler's List
Ralph Finnes' "Amon Goeth" is a superb example of the charismatically evil movie Nazi. Strong in convinction with the tongue of a devil, this type sends chills down your spine when you realize the true machinations behind their eyes.
3. Hellboy
Now you might think that I am highlighting Hellboy to showcase the demon raising-adoptive parent Nazi… but you'd be wrong. Instead this film features the first appearance of the unusual clockwork ninja Nazi. There has got to be an easier way to reach immortality.
2. Apt Pupil
Based on a story by Stephen King, Apt Pupil stars Ian McKellen as the manipulative retired Nazi. Discovered by a teenager in his neighborhood, McKellen's character soon begins a battle of wits with the youth that leads the teen down a dark path he may not be able to escape. Another one to give you chills.
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones finds himself up against a series of more traditional Nazis who in the end do something I am sure we wish that they would all so, that is melt. Once the Ark of the Covenant is open those Nazis start to melt like Velveeta in a microwave, and not at all in the tasty way.
One last glimpse of Jamie before you go…
