Movies/TV's 3R’s 11.17.09: Rainn Wilson, Michael Caine, Sheneneh, Spencer Pratt, More...
Posted by Shawn S. Lealos on 11.17.2009

Welcome to Week 21 of The 3 R's for the Movie/TV world.

Without any further ado, here is...

  • The Right

  • Movies pulled off the line: Two upcoming movies, both of which I was dreading, have had their life support plugs pulled. The first is the adaptation of the Stephen King series The Dark Tower and the second is the remake of the Korean thriller Oldboy. Oldboy was going to be directed by Steven Spielberg and star Will Smith and I couldn't see how those two men were going to remake this brutal movie. Spielberg can do brutal, but it is always rooted in reality (Schindler's, Munich) and Will Smith does not scream ultra violence to me. It didn't seem right. The Dark Tower, on the other hand, I never want to see as a standalone movie. The story stretches across seven books and trying to make it into one movie is ridiculous. I was slightly interested because it was J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof who were circling it, but it needs to be a miniseries or sold as a series of movies. Lindelof says he was "terrified of screwing it up." I can definitely relate to that. - Source

Things are about to get Super: James Gunn, who I love and some of you don't, is about ready to start work on his next feature film, Super. The movie will be shot down in Shreveport, Louisiana and star Rainn Wilson (The Office) as a superhero with no powers. As a huge fan of Gunn's last movie, Slither, I am very excited to hear news of another. Gunn also wrote Tromeo and Juliet, Troma Studios best movie, and Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake. Also starring in the movie is Ellen Page (Juno) and Liv Tyler (Steven Tyler offspring). Be afraid. Be very, very afraid. In the meantime, here is a video Michael Rooker (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer) and Rainn Wilson made for Gunn before he sets off to make this movie. - Source

Duncan Jones searches for the Source: This year has a great one for Science Fiction fans. The new Star Trek gave mainstream fans a fun, roller coaster of a sci-fi movie but die-hard fans had two movies that got their brains working: District 9 and Moon. Moon is the closest I think we will come to a 2001 type movie and first time director Duncan Jones must be commended for his work. He has now found his next project and it is based on someone else's script. The film is Source Code and is a Twilight Zone sounding film about a U.S. soldier who wakes up in the body of a civilian commuter on a train and is forced to relive the bombing of the train until he can find out who's behind the attack. Jake Gyllenhaal is signed to star and I can't wait to see what Duncan can do with this. - Source

Michael Caine's Swan Song: The British thriller Harry Brown will go down in history as Michael Caine's final starring role. He has stated he will only take supporting roles for the remainder of his career. The actor, known to most kids today as Alfred, the butler of Bruce Wayne in Chris Nolan's Batman movies, stars as a former Marine who seeks revenge when his best friend is killed. The film, directed by first timer Daniel Barber, is getting good reviews following its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. There is good news for U.S. film fans as Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. rights and will release the film theatrically in 2010. For U.K. fans, you get your chance to see it now as it opened on 350 screens this past weekend. To get an idea for the feel of the film, think of Jack Carter (Get Carter, 1971), forty years later. Here's a trailer to whet your appetite.

  • The wRong

  • The Lion might fall: MGM was founded in 1924. It was, at one time, the most dominant film studio in the world. The studio is responsible for films as diverse as The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, Singin' in the Rain and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The company has been in trouble before, being shut down in 1973, but has always rebounded. Let's hope this is also the case this time around because they are sinking fast and it is expected that their assets will be auctioned off in the next few weeks. It is speculated that one company could buy the MGM library, another could buy the logo and even another might purchase United Artists. The company is in debt for the amount of $3.7 billion and it is speculated they will receive as little as $1.5 billion in the present market for their assets. The MGM library contains 4,000 titles but many are old and, unfortunately, not worth much to the buyers. It is sad to see such a great, historical studio house fall but it is to be expected in today's tough economy. ** Update: MGM has been granted its second extension to repay the forbearance owed on debt payments, this one until Jan. 31. They are attempting to rebuild themselves and turnaround their debt. This remains a wRong because I still don't see this ending well. ** - Source

The Fourth Kind Pays Big: Remember the viral marketing for the recent alien abduction movie The Fourth Kind? Remember the debate about whether it really is based on true life occurrences or not? Well, it isn't. If you saw the viral marketing, you may have noticed news stories attributed to real newspaper The Nome Nugget. These stories were fabricated and the marketing team may have been smarter to fabricate the newspaper as well. A lawsuit was filed and Universal has been forced to cease and desist using bogus stories attributed to real publications and pay $20,000 to The Press Club, while also donating $2,500 to the Calista Scholarship Fund. When the editor of The Nome Nugget contacted the webmaster and demanded the stories be removed, he refused and demanded that she prove she was really "the owner of The Nugget" They refused to remove the content causing legal charges to be filed. You know, these fines could have been avoided if a certain webmaster hadn't been so arrogant to believe themselves above the law. I'm sure someone will be looking for a job in the near future. - Source

  • The Ridiculous

  • The Weekend Box Office is a Disaster: 2012 made $65 million at the U.S. box office this weekend and $220 million worldwide. A film critic I respect gave the movie a positive review. I find the movie to be preposterous. The dialogue is horrible. The action sequences are unrealistic to the point of absurdity. The characters are poorly developed. The movie makes it impossible for any character to make an impression or be cared about at all by the audience. It is just a really bad movie, yet people paid their hard earned cash to see it. I don't get it. Maybe people prefer to see a violent, destructive movie that kills everyone and destroys everything as a sort of escapism. That is sad. I know I am not alone in my dislike of the movie since it is sitting at 39% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Top Critics opinions are even worse, ranking it at 23%. I have been accused of choosing not to like the movie before I even saw it which is stupid. I like Hollywood blockbusters and usually give them more of a break then many other critics. But I absolutely hate 2012. By the two hour mark, I was tired of everything blowing up, tired of all the characters they "wanted" us to care about dying, tired of other characters not giving a shit about anyone but themselves. Thanks to the masses racing out to see this movie we will now get a television spinoff of the film. Thanks.

John Travolta is bat shit crazy: Apparently someone started spreading the rumor that they were remaking Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and it is going to star John Travolta and Tom Cruise. When Travolta heard about this, he perked up and believes it is a "good idea." He then said to his fellow Scientologist that "it's not a bad idea." Actually, John, it is a bad idea. It is a horrible idea. It is, dare I say, a Ridiculous idea. - Source

Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence to rob our intellect: Martin Lawrence dressed in drag on his TV show to portray a character named Sheneneh Jenkins. Jamie Foxx dressed in drag on In Living Color as a character named Wanda Wayne. The two will be reprising these roles in a movie together called - are you ready? - Sheneneh and Wanda. What started out as a fake trailer at the BET Awards this year has been fast tracked by Screen Gens to be a crime comedy. Comedy might be a stretch here. - Source

  • Something Awesome This Way Comes: Ray Bradbury is one of science fiction's greatest authors and news he has signed on to develop a miniseries based on six of his short stories is incredible news. Bradbury is best known for Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles but is also famous for classic sci-fi movie adaptations It Came from Outer Space and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. The guy is an icon and John Dayton, the man who will executive produce the series, says the show is a chance to pay "homage to a man who has inspired us all." No network is attached yet but I'd like it to be a cable network or premium channel because I don't trust network TV with projects like this. - Source

The most popular shows on TV are: NFL football games. The NFL has easily become the most popular sport in America and the ratings prove it. The average audience for NFL games is sitting at 17 million viewers. Through the first nine weeks of the NFL season, a NFL game has been the #1 primetime program for adults 18-49 eight times. The national 4:15 p.m. ET game on Sundays is averaging 23.5 million viewers this season, and is the most watched program on all of television this fall. Let me repeat that: the late afternoon NFL games are the most watched on all of television. Monday Night Football is the most watched show on cable, with an average audience of 14.6 million viewers. This is the most viewers the NFL has had since 1989. The average audience for all NFL telecasts (17 million) is more than two times the average viewership for all non-NFL primetime programs on ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX (8.3 million). Are you ready for some football?

His name is more marketable than just about anything: Last Tuesday I received the new Stephen King book Under the Dome in the mail. Two days later it was announced the book will become a film and those right have been sold to HBO as a miniseries. How the hell a book gets optioned before it is even released to the public is beyond me but it is all thanks to the author's name. I am a fan, a dollar baby director and a diehard "constant reader" so this is great news to me. HBO is the perfect place for Stephen King and I can only salivate at how much better The Stand could have been on a premium TV network. In other news, King has written a script for an adaptation of The Cell and has announced that he will write an eighth Dark Tower novel called The Wind Through the Keyhole. The new Dark Tower book will be about the supporting characters and revolve around what happened between Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla. - Source

Another Day, Another Reboot: Wait, am I talking about the revival of yet another classic TV show in the ever decaying world of "lack of original ideas" television? And if I am, why the hell is it a Right? People seem to be annoyed when I bitch about the remakes, reboots, rehashes, and rebuilding of classic TV shows and movies. Well, tough shit, this is my column and if you aren't bothered with the complete lack of original ideas in Hollywood then enjoy the same old shit you are fed every day. However, this is a reboot that I can't really complain about. Charlie's Angels is close to getting a pilot order from ABC and I am fine with that. The original show was a campy, fun series that introduced most of the world to Farah Fawcett and made me fall in love with Cheryl Ladd. Then it was brought back with a campy, fun movie starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. I am sure the new show will cast three beautiful young girls as the Angels and give us campy, fun action. I can live with that. - Source

  • Dollhouse closes its doors: This is not a surprise and I have talked for the last few weeks that the end was near. When Fox yanked the show from its November sweeps, the writing was on the wall. What bothers me is that Season 2 was starting to pick up steam and it is obvious the underlying theme was coming to surface giving the show more than just a "case of the week" feeling. However, there are two things that stood in the way of the show's success. The first is Joss Whedon is not a mainstream storyteller and the second is Fox stuck the show in Friday night hell. Fox has not had very much success with any show on Friday nights for the last ten years or so. I read an interesting editorial over at Chud.com that mentioned that the future for Joss and his television shows might be In-Demand or online. The shows would need to be made for a lot less money but Joss' fans follow him anywhere he goes and if they are good enough, audiences will follow (see Dr. Horrible for proof of that). If Joss is allowed to worry less about network problems and concentrate on his shows, he might be able to give us something great that won't be yanked before we can get into it. Dollhouse may not have been anywhere near as good as Firefly but television needs storytellers like Joss Whedon. For fans of Dollhouse, the final nine episodes will air on Fox, beginning Dec. 4.

  • More Special Interest Fun!: GLAAD's favorite TV show Glee has found a new enemy. The show, which has earned a lot of kudos for its diversity, is under attack from advocates for the disabled. See, there is a character that is in a wheelchair and a recent episode had all the glee club members spend time in wheelchairs to get a feel for what that character is going through. Instead of seeing this as a positive, the advocates are angered that Kevin McHale, the actor playing the wheelchair bound glee club member, is not disabled. They wanted someone who really is disabled to get the role. Glee's executive producer says they attempted to find a disabled actor to play the role but none that auditioned "could really sing, really act, and have that charisma you need on TV." I swear, when the most diversified show on TV gets attacked, you know people are going overboard. - Source

I had a dream...: It was a beautiful dream. I dreamed that two ignorant people, who believed they were famous, went on to a morning talk show. This couple was trying to promote themselves, despite no one in the world giving a damn. Then a crazy weatherman pulled out a taser and zapped them both, causing instant death. I woke up giggling. Some time back, Spencer and Heidi Pratt went on Today, following them "bowing out of" I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!. Now, they say they bowed out but I have the feeling they were asked to leave when no one considered them celebrities. Well, the always awesome Al Roker asked them about their controversial behavior, causing Heidi to cry. Spencer asked why "the weatherman" was even trying to talk to them. Because they are famous, you see. Well, now they have a book called "How to be Famous" and are going on Today again. They have already said they forgive "the weatherman" because "the devil gets into all of us sometimes." I did not watch it this morning because I am afraid it won't live up to my wonderful dream of the encounter. - Source

Carrie Prejean needs to go away: I wasn't as offended as the rest of the world when the former Miss California said she was against gay marriage at the Miss USA pageant because the other alternative would have been lying and pretending to be someone she wasn't. It is her beliefs and she should stand by them. However, her actions since then have been ... disturbing. First there have been reports of eight sex tapes she has made. That is not Ridiculous, but that does appear to be quite hypocritical for someone who claims to be religious. Then she was recently on Larry King Live and things got shaky when he asked her why, if religious freedom is so important to her, did she agree to settle her lawsuit with the pageant. She refused to answer because terms of the lawsuit are controversial. I think she misunderstood the question. Then King cut away to a call from a gay viewer who asked about her stance on gay marriage, causing her to take off her mic and say she was going to leave. She claims to have religious beliefs she is "standing behind" but isn't standing behind any of them. I had no problem with her at first but now realize she is a joke. - Source

Does GLADD stand for Gays and Lesbians Against Drunk Driving? Because I thought it was GLAAD: Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. - Posted By: Guest (Guest) - Might as well be.

Leo Di Caprio is a great actor but Scorsese is going to be dead before he gets the chance to work with other leading men like Christian Bale and Ed Norton. That's my point. - Posted By: Propagandhi (Guest) - I can agree with that. I'd love to see Scorsese working with Edward Norton, Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr. and more. But I hope he doesn't die anytime soon. On a positive note, look at how long it took him to hook up with Jack Nicholson and that ended up being a great movie!

Good point about the Office hanging gag. People who are complaining either 1) don't watch the Office and therefore don't know that Michael Scott's character is a wildly offensive idiot who thinks he's tolerant and enlightened or 2) think it's funny when he says offensive things about blacks and gays but get pissed when he offends their group (think Isaac Hayes leaving South Park). - Posted By: Matt (Guest) - That is the thought I get when any and all special rights groups speak up. Everyone is so preoccupied with their own rights that they don't understand when they are trampling on everyone else's.

As a huge Joss Whedon fan (Buffy and Firefly are two of the greatest series ever) but Dollhouse just didn't do it for me. It was on thin ice at the end of the first season and the second seemed to go back to the drawing board sucking away all the momentum it required which was its death knell.

It's too bad though, the show had a great premise, Eliza Dushku, and the Topher character. Seriously. The Topher birthday revelation convinced me to tune in for the second season.

I now believe that you are actually a venture bro fan. i believe i owe you an explanation on why i got all hot and bothered about it. i thought you a hypocrite sir. You go on and on about great shows that never get their due, when the should be 3x Emmy Award winner for best animated series was totally ignored. I just have a chip on my shoulder where i have to get the word out on things that i find underrated and ignored...i do the same thing for mello yello.

I officially apologize for being a slightly crazed superfan (and massively annoying, no doubt). I now have my head on straight as the venture brothers has been talked about enough in this column.

Really?? They are pissed at Glee??? Really?? My girlfriend works with special needs kids and she thought it was an AMAZING episode!! Wow, some people need to chill the fuck out! It's a television show with singing on every episode...the obviously need a great actor who can sing!! Jesus...it's not that difficult. Some people can never be happy, even after such an uplifting episode

Honestly this guy needs to get a reality check on what constitutes hating a movie. 2012 special effects are top notch (not the best! but pretty damn good), nothing better or worse than THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. you wanna talk about characters not worth caring for? why don't you watch FIGHTING or then new version of PROM NIGHT, terrible characters, unlikeable to the core, shittier stories on both movies and there isn't really a positive thing to say about either of them. again! CHECK YOURSELF, stop bitching and enjoy a popcorn flick every once in a while. and do us all a favor be prepared to reference somenthing better than your opinion what constitutes shitty special effects, or did you already forget that shit like Van Helsing has been thrown into a movie screen?

Why does something that happend in someone's past make them hypocritical? Can she not be repentant for her actions that happened years ago and still have an opinion? Granted, it's a shame she made a bad decision years ago, but it's not as if she made these tapes last week and is still saying these things. Forgive her, and respect her courage for standing up and making a statement about a very controversial topic.

So you hate 2012 because you "find the movie to be preposterous. The dialogue is horrible. The action sequences are unrealistic to the point of absurdity. The characters are poorly developed.", yet you are okay with a Charlie's Angels remake? Okay, you lose cred points. 2012 is a fucking movie. It wasn't supposed to win Oscars or anything. And looking at your list of top movies...you lose more cred points.

Lots of people do things from the past!! Shit we had a billioin people on here ripping Michael Jackson about being a child molester (never found guilty of course) and that was in the past....yet he couldn't escape it! But this woman should be allowed to escape hers so easily and JUDGE other people based upon their lives and it's ok?? You nor Ms. Prejean or anyone else has the right to tell someone they can't get married...how would straight people feel if it were the other way around? And homosexuals got to vote on our rights...that's ridiculous! You don't people's rights up for a vote! That is wrong and disgusting my friend

Posted By: Erik (Guest)  on November 17, 2009 at 12:43 PM

Erik, you've missed the point. She has no right to tell anyone that they can't get married. It was her opinion that that act is wrong. The only rebuttle to her opinion was "oh, you made a sex tape", which somehow makes her opinion invalid. Be careful when the government dictates what your opinions are allowed to be and how we are allowed to express ourselves. Yes, Michael Jackson could never escape that stigma, but at the same time, you have to ask yourself what he did of his own violition to make that accusation go away? Not much. I guess ultimately I'd ask, had she come forward before making these statements and said, "Hey, I've got this in my past" then made the statements, would she be any less crucified? Mistake, yes, hypocritical...I think not

It's a shame about Dollhouse, and I hope Joss isn't giving up on the show entirely. I'd like to see him get a shot on a cable network, where the pressure is less, and he might get more freedom. There have been some very solid shows to appear on TNT and USA, and even ScyFi, and Dollhouse could be one of them. Fox (and other networks) are clearly in the "do it now" mentality that would have gotten Seinfeld and Cheers canceled long before they became hits. I'm just glad Flash Forward is doing well right now.

Why are you offended unless your gay yourself? Gay marrage is wrong and disgusting. I respect her for saying that in front of the world. And her actions have not been disturbing. She did those tapes in the past. Obviously she has learned from her past. Stop being a Hypocrite yourself. People can't express there opinions anymore because people too easily get offended. Yet your on here a couple of weeks ago making front of groups who got mad at the office. But your doing the same thing to her.

Rampant typo's and errant use of grammar does not do you any favors in this case.
On the other and i also do not agree with gay marriage but not on any moral high ground.

In my eyes with civil union laws and such why does the wording of "married" matter so much?

If you have all the same rights, liberty's,and tax benefits-why you feel the need to pressure the already reticent religious to treat you like any other couple when what you engage in goes against the tenements of most organized religions?

Not saying it's right or wrong.
It's a belief not an idea, therefor not as easily interchangeable.

Speaking of Carrie Prejean and things taken "misunderstanding" something....

Just watched the King interview to confirm it: she didn't say "controversial," she said "confidential." As in, there's a clause in the settlement stating neither side is to discuss the matter publicly.

As in, she CAN'T talk about it, or she's reneging on the agreement and loses the settlement. As in, she'd face continued legal action.

As in, Larry King as a "journalist" really should've understood there are some things people can't legally discuss on the record.

I know this myself, because I'm a reporter who just had a story essentially killed by a SNAFU involving a confidentiality statement a litigant didn't understand when she sat down for a post-court interview. Discussing something that's "controversial" is a matter of choice, in which case I could see criticizing Prejean to a certain extent. However, though I can't say for certain that there's a confidentiality clause, I can say from my experience I would be extremely, extremely surprised if a big organization like that didn't include one. In which case, she couldn't have legally discussed the terms on PRIMETIME CABLE and kept the settlement. In fact, that might've constituted Breach of Contract.

King should've taken the hint and maybe redirected his questioning. He could've addressed a lot of the underlying issues without her having to halt questioning because of a legal brickwall

(Though at least Carrie and the wall would be on a comparable intellectual level, it seems...)

Oh, one more thing: the call screener letting the caller through after Prejean nixed the questioning on (presumably) legal grounds reeks of an attempted "gotcha." I don't blame her for drawing the line, honestly.

Most religious people are self-righteous, judgmental hypocrites. It's no big surprise that this fame whore is too.

And this atheist is completely and blissfully ignorant.

It is not hypocritical to believe something is wrong, then fall to the urges of those things. We all sin. Any Christian will tell you that if you ever bothered to strike up a conversation with one. The difference is that we are repentent for our misgivings and acknowledge that what we did was wrong. Doesn't mean we won't do it again, we most likely will. But that doesn't block us from proclaiming that what we are doing is wrong.

He didn't ask her about the terms, though. He asked her about her reasons for settling and then followed up by questioning if the confidentiality clause said she can't discuss *why* she settled. If it does, she should have said yes and that would be the end of it.

"The difference is that we are repentent for our misgivings"

Except for Carrie Prejean, who is seemingly unrepentant about *anything*.

Posted By: Jeff (Guest) on November 17, 2009 at 01:15 PM

So it was Michael Jackson's job to make us not think the way that we did?? I'm pretty sure with the thousands of lame jokes Leno did over the years, it's pretty much impossible....nor was it his responsibility. It was our responsibility as a society to let his past be the past, just as is being asked of Ms. Prejean.

And yes I find it hypocritical of anyone that is making comments about a disagreement with gay marriage because it's against their religious beliefs and upbringing while making low-budget adult films in her spare time. If i'm not mistaken, pornography and lust are typically frowned upon within her belief system.

And I believe you missed the point. Yes, she believes gay marriage is wrong...but the fact is that we DO tell people that they can't do it! It isn't our right to do so, especially to vote on it! It's amazing people will so it's morally and spiritually wrong for gays to marry, but in 19 states and Washington DC you can marry your cousin?? In all FIFTY states you can marry your 2nd cousin!! Hmmmm...I'm not sure the Bible is too cool with incest either. The point is people fight against gay marriage for the wrong reasons and truly DO prevent it from happening

"In my eyes with civil union laws and such why does the wording of "married" matter so much?"

Because to the movement, it's more about "being right" than anything else. They've been told they can't have something, so naturally nothing short of getting lock, stock and barrel will satisfy them. It's human nature.

J.D., sorry, as I recently found out, confidentiality clauses CAN, in fact, include asking about why a settlement happened. And again, this is coming from someone who also thinks Prejean is a dense hypocrite. So I'd say she got some sound legal advice, but is catching Hell for being far short of elegantly spoken in telling King off. She still could've very well ended up in legal hot water for what answering that question. In my opinion as a journalist, she did the right thing and King did a lousy job of trying to get AROUND that roadblock with his questioning.

To the one who clamed that the caller getting through was a kinda "F-U" to her, the caller was asking about gay marrage, NOT the settlement. She didn't say anything (in the clip mind you I didnt watch the show) about not answering questions about gay marrage, only about the settlement and such. If she really wanted her oppinion known, she would've answered the questions instead of claiming that King was "Being inappropriate" and storming off. I guess she said it all in her book ;)

And for those who back her and say that she isn't to be judged for past discressions, and claim that she's not jsut promoting herself, why is it that she did any of this stuff? If she made these vids/took those pics for her BF, she was promoting herself to him, and now suddenly when she has a BOOK to sell, they find the light of day? HMMM
