Two Tivos To Paradise 11.20.09: A Nearly New Moon-Free Look At The Week In Television
Posted by Al Norton on 11.20.2009
Lost & Chuck get premiere dates, Smallville's movie event, ABC gives Charlie's Angels a reboot, The CW gives Vampire Diaries a full week of primetime , a guide to Thanksgiving day programming, more raves for Curb Your Enthusiasm, a full ratings breakdown, tons of news and notes, the TV Pick of the Week and more, all in the latest edition of Al Norton's Two Tivos To Paradise.
Hello Friends. It was another it what seems like a series of crazy weeks in the Norton household, with a bit too much drama for my tastes. More on that in a bit.
Was last week's Saturday Night Live the worst of the season? Hands down. The worst in years? More than likely. Here is the biggest offender, perhaps the single worst sketch I have ever seen.
To be fair, this did make me laugh…
As I mentioned above, the last seven days were more than a bit stressful for some family reasons. My daughter has a heart problem, a correctable one that will require major surgery at some point in the next year two; when I was off two weeks ago it was because she was undergoing some invasive testing. The condition makes the Doctors rather cautious when it comes to any other health issues that come up, like this week's high fever and viral infection. She was admitted to the hospital for the night, which having twins means the family gets split up to make sure everyone gets taken care of.
If you ever notice that a particular column seems skimpy it's simply because I ran out of time that week. Please know that I really couldn't be more dedicated to bringing you the news each Friday; outside of my family there is nothing that brings me more pleasure and satisfaction that writing Two Tivos To Paradise for you every week.
Hope you caught my three interviews this week (Jenna Elfman on Monday, Mark Pellegrino from Lost & Supernatural on Wednesday, and a chat with Joel McHale and Ken Jeong on Thursday) but you can use the links at the bottom to pull them up just in case. I hope the Joel McHale – Ken Jeong interview reads as funny as it sounded because it was a ton of fun. Next week I'll have chats with Margaret Colin (Gossip Girl) and Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family).
Do that to me one more time, once is never enough from news like you.
THIS JUST IN
Right as TTTP was going to press it was learned that Oprah Winfrey would announce an end date to her long running talk show on today's episode. September 9, 2011 will not only bring her 25th season to a close but will also be the last episode of the highly rated series that has made Winfrey one of the most powerfull people in the entertainment industy. More on this story next week.
It Is A Hurtin' Thing, You Don't Want To Talk About It, Pain In Your Heart, Well It's Takin' Your Breath Away
Multiple news outlets have ABC thisclose to ordering a pilot for a revamped version of Charlie's Angels, the 70's detective series that was a huge hit for the network. Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen, who produced the two big screen versions of Angels, will executive produce along with Leonard Goldberg, who executive produced both the movies and the original series.
This news item held little or no interest for me until I kept reading and found that Josh Friedman was writing the pilot and would be on board producing as well. Friedman's last TV project was Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, a series that made my year's 10 best list the two seasons it aired on Fox. All of a sudden my expectations jumped and I was quite curious to see what he would do with the franchise. After all, he has shown a knack for writing interesting parts for women as well as creating quality action sequences on the small screen.
Not sure if this version will be perhaps a darker look at what has always previous been action-lite but one thing is for sure; Two of the three leads really need to be Katee Sackhoff and Regina King.
Well They Encourage Your Complete Cooperation, Send You Roses When They Think You Need To Smile
In an unprecedented programming move for a major network, The CW will air all 10 episodes of its freshman hit The Vampire Diaries in prime time the week beginning Monday, December 14th. Episodes will air back-to-back starting at 8 pm all week. Dairies is the networks most watched show among its targeted 18-34 demographic.
I applaud this move as I often feel the networks should do something creative with their standard rerun periods (mid- December through the first full week of January) and this certainly gives people watching other shows on Thursday nights a chance to see what they've been missing. It doesn't hurt that it will come after New Moon will have been playing in theaters for a month and stoking up people's appetites for all-things-Vampire.
Look At What's Happened To Me, I Can't Believe It Myself
NBC is airing The Biggest Loser: Where Are They Now this Wednesday, a two hour look at the lives of over 40 contestants from the show's 7 seasons. We recently caught up with Ali Vincent, the winner from season one, to chat about the special, her post-Biggest Loser life, and her new book, Believe It, Be It.
TTTP: Not that you can really sum this up in just a couple of sentences, but how has your life changed since you won the first season?
Ali Vincent: Honestly how has my life not changed. I take care of my self on a daily basis physically & emotionally. I have received thousands of emails from people all over the world, I travel the country speaking to communities and corporations, I just wrote my first book Believe It, Be It, I've participated in all kinds of events such as runs, rides, and triathlons, I'm working on an active wear clothing line and I'm am planning on starting a foundation to encourage and empower woman of all ages to create their destiny.
TTTP: How did it feel to catch up with your fellow competitors?
Ali Vincent: I always love hearing how the BL family is doing and how they are making a difference on a personal level and community level.
TTTP: Do you think that those who have kept the weight off and maintained their new healthy lifestyles will be perhaps more inspirational than the actual winners as they have succeed in a real life setting?
Ali Vincent: I believe that every contestant from TBL is inspirational and that America will see that is because we are all just normal people who had an extraordinary experience and have returned to our lives and continue our journeys. I believe my journey is one of the rest of my life. Sure there are those who have maintained or even lost more weight since the show but I believe that truth inspires so even those who have gained some weight and are struggling to continue to figure it out will be even more heartfelt. TBL is a success because it shows success but more importantly because it shows the struggle people go through in achieving their goals, the rest of their life.
TTTP: What were some of the common themes you heard from people talking about their post TBL life?
Ali Vincent: Some of the more common themes amongst all BL's after the show is that we all realize that our lives will never be the same. You will often see BL's in 5k's, 10k's, 1/2 marathons, marathons, centuries, triathlons, speaking at health and fitness expos or at community events. What you don't always hear that we share usually amongst ourselves is the day in day out battle to feel comfortable in our new bodies, new world and new celebrity. TBL is changing the conscious of America and we as former and current contestants are their ambassadors, to me I take it as a honor to some it feels overwhelming.
TTTP: Here's a chance to plug your book - what can people who pick up it expect?
Ali Vincent: When people read my book Believe It Be It; How Being The Biggest Loser Won Me Back My Life, they will have an opportunity to feel what it's like to be a contestant. To understand the feelings and unconscious decisions made by someone who feels victim to their circumstances and finds confidence and triumph through 1 minute on a treadmill, 1 minute off. Believe It, Be It is my journey of forgiveness and falling in love with myself as I collect evidence for "why not me?"
Don't miss The Biggest Loser: Where Are They Now, Wednesday at 8 pm on NBC. Ali Vincent's book, Believe It, Be It is available at www.Amazon.com.
Me Used To Be Angry Young Man, Me Hiding Me Head In The Sand
Two series in development that were of particular interest to us here at TTTP already made moves this week to ratchet that interest up a few notches. Delta Blues, a TNT drama produced by George Clooney about a Memphis Cop who moonlights as an Elvis impersonator got its series lead when it was announced that Jason Lee who just finished a four season run as the title character in My Name Is Earl, had been cast.
Meanwhile Fox's Jack and Dan added Norty Winner Diana-Maria Riva as Bradley Whitford & Colin Hanks boss as well as hiring Tim Matheson to direct the pilot. Matheson has directed episodes of Burn Notice and several feature films to go with his long resume as an actor.
Riva won the Best Supporting Actress, Drama Norty two years ago for her fantastic work on Side Order Of Life and worked with Whitford during West Wing's final season. Jack & Dan, created by Burn Notice's Matt Nix, is shaping up quite well.
Lee may most recently be associated with Earl – a role he did not get enough credit for – but his previous film work shows his ability to handle the kind of quirky drama that Delta Blues looks like its going to be. Another major thing the show has going for it is that Clark Johnson will be directing the pilot; Johnson is an accomplished actor and director who was behind the camera for the pilot and the finale of The Wire as well as helming seven episodes of The Shield.
Obviously we won't really know anything until we can see the finished product but so far these look like shows to pay attention to.
You've Been So Kind And Generous, I Don't Know Why You Keep On Giving
For those of you who will be spending at least some part of Thursday in front of the TV, here are just some of your Holiday viewing options.
*For sports you've got three NFL games (Packers-Lions at 1 on Fox, Cowboys-Raiders at 4 on CBS, and Giants-Broncos at 8 on the NFL Network), a college football match up with some serious regional pride at stake (Texas-Texas A&M, 8 pm, ESPN), and two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference hooping it up (Magic-Hawks, 8 pm, TNT)
*ABC starts off the night with the traditional Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and then follows it up with concert specials from Beyonce and Paul McCartney.
*NBC airs it's NBC People of the Year special at 9 pm.
*Lifetime celebrates the night by running one of my favorite movies, Love Actually (9 pm). I don't think it would be possible for me to watch the last 40 minutes of this movie too many times.
*My Fair Wedding with David Tutera (WE), 10 am, 7 episodes
*Band of Brothers (Spike), 9:30 am, full series
*Home Alone (FX) Noon, six consecutive showings

If your worried about the quality than perhaps knowing that the production company doing the show is the same one that did Project Runway along with Top Chef (and its spinoffs)…
Turns Out Not Where But Who You're With That Really Matters
The top thing I watched since the last column went to press AKA The Best Of What's Around…I am not a huge fan of singling out the same show two weeks in a row but Curb Your Enthusiasm gave me no choice last Sunday with it's brilliant 36 minute outing focusing on the table read for the Seinfeld reunion. First off, there was the sheer nostalgia of seeing the whole gang back together, on set and picking up the characters that brought us such joy. Jason Alexander in particular deserves specific praise for the way in which he just turns George on like flicking a switch, not to mention the way he allows himself to come off like more than a bit of an ass on Curb despite being incredibly nice in real life. Jerry's interaction with Marty was also a great moment.
The way in which Michael Richards recent history was dealt with bordered on brilliant, and the "I wish there was a word I could call you …" scene was amazing. The silliness of him buying that Leon was an accountant with Groat's disease whose hat saved his life did ever-so-slightly take away from the overall effect but I will choose to focus on the things that made the episode an A, not what kept it from being an A+.
Let's not forget Larry David himself, who managed to find moments to shine despite being surrounded by the Seinfeld cast. Yes, he was quite funny as always, but what was really nice was how much his love for Cheryl came through when he they were talking on-set.
People Say I'm Crazy Doing What I'm Doing. Well, They Give Me All Kinds Of Warnings To Save Me From Ruin
What's flashed before my eyes the last two weeks…The Wheels episode of Glee from last week was truly amazing, a great mix of the comedy, emotion, and music that makes the show so unique. Mike O'Malley continues to open eyes while helping to make Kurt and his Dad's relationship one of the best of its kind you will see on TV right now…Love Eric McCormack's spots on The New Adventures of Old Christine, matching the regular cast dysfunction for dysfunction. This past week say Dave Foley reprise his role as Christine's suitor Tom, and the TV world is always a better place when Dave Foley is on screen…I enjoyed the premiere of Bravo's new Chef Academy in that everyone seemed to be being themselves, a rarity for reality television. Yes, the group of students was clearly chosen by casting directors but the first hour came off quite well…Cougar Town gets better each week, perhaps because some of the harsher aspects of the show's humor work better as we get to know the characters more…The Playbook episode of How I Met Your Mother was an instant classic...If it's Friday than I must be raving about Katey Sagal's performance on Sons of Anarchy, one for which she deserves a lot more mainstream coverage. Her conversation with the Priest this week was a major highlight, as was perhaps the only sex-on-a-desk scene in TV history that could be called both romantic and healing…Ghost Hunters Academy opened with a strong episode showing how seriously these guys take their job, which is why the original GH is still the standard against which all other supernatural reality series (and there are a LOT of them these days) are judged…Regular readers know I am not a every week Supernatural guy but I have seen most-or-all of the last month and come away with a full understanding of why this show has the passionate following that it does. The stuck-in-TV-hell episode was obviously a favorite of mine, but overall I am extremely impressed with the acting and writing. Is it odd that I want to compare the show to Veronica Mars in that the show is much smarter, darker, and funnier than the average person would expect from the network they air/aired on?...I have to admit the build on Gary Unmarried this week was pretty funny, culminating in what may be the ultimate white trash scenario; dealing with the cops on your front lawn on Thanksgiving (wearing an undershirt and jeans)…I've watched the last couple of Bones and my issues with the show remain the same, as in the lack of growth in the title character. I mean, am I really supposed to believe that someone as smart as Temperance simply can not allow for others to make decisions based on things other than rational reasoning? She writes these books that are best sellers so clearly she has some idea of the way people think yet still views the world from a Vulcan-like point of view. That aside, not enough can be said about David Boreanaz, who is quite likely giving the best performance by a man on a procedural drama on the air right now…The Soup is in the middle of running a bunch of The Soup Presents specials that remain laugh out loud funny despite using clips that they have already mined for comedy…This past Tuesday's SVU was a major improvement over the rest of the season but overall it was decent at best. Why has this once high quality series become the definition of overwrought?...
TV Pick Of The Week
I am frequently singing the praises of The Closer on these pages, calling it the top police drama on TV right now – by a wide margin – and TNT is giving you the chance to catch up on the current season before it returns with three final episodes next month. Starting Thanksgiving morning at 8 am you can watch 8 consecutive episodes in a row, a run that may be the strongest in series history. Mary McDonnell joined the cast in a recurring part that gets better every time she appears on screen, and Brenda's niece shows up on the scene, a move that seemed like a horrible mistake by the show's writers at the start but turned into another stroke of genius by the end of the run.
Of particular note is the last of these episodes, Waivers of Extradition, directed by Kevin Bacon and singled out by me as the best thing I watched that week when it aired. It features a tense – and believable – action sequence as well as a fantastic guest turn by Xander Berkeley as a Texas lawman. Along with the writers and actors, the casting director for the series deserves huge accolades as the next time I see someone give a bad performance on The Closer will be the first time.
Don't miss The Closer marathon, Thursday at 10:00 am on TNT.
Hope You Need My Love, Babe, Just Like I Need You

Also, I noticed there's one show I enjoy that isn't on your Tivo list there. Have you watched Fringe at all, and if so what are your thoughts on it?

No mention of your feelings on the Colts/Pats game. Odd.

Hey Al, I wish your daughter the best...
Hope everything works out.

Two of the three leads really need to be Katee Sackhoff and Regina King.
It's Charlies Angels, not Charlies Bush Pigs.

SNL wasn't funny because it didn't have Keenan on it. Was far from the worst in a few years though. I liked the fart sketch, even though it went on too long and it was, well, a fart joke.
Hope all goes well with your daughter.

The CW announced that the upcoming two part Smallville episode that focuses on the Justice League has been turned into a one night event titled Smallville: Absolute Justice, which will air on February 5th…
Actually it focuses on the Justice Society, a group of heroes that preceded the Justice League...
