Two Tivos To Paradise 2.12.10: Your TV News Valentine
Posted by Al Norton on 02.12.2010
The Howard Stern - America Idol media frenzy, 24 gets closer to the big screen, a huge update on pilot season including stars from Lost, Friday Night Lights, and The Shield getting new shows, backstage chaos at Flash Forward, raves for SNL, tons of news & notes, the TV Pick of the Week and more, all in the latest edition of Al Norton's Two Tivos To Paradise!
Hello Friends. While here in Boston the snow turned out to be all hat and no cattle, I hope those of you reading in the Northeast have managed to dig yourselves out after Snowmaggedon and Snowmaggedon 2: Snow Harder.
Being the huge Burn Notice fan that I am it was a riot to see this sketch on SNL last Saturday. Some of the answers are hysterical, and any publicity is good publicity!
This being Valentine's Day weekend I thought I would offer a tip to all my male readers looking for some romantic music to set the mood; Tamela D'Amico's Got A Little Story is one of my favorite jazz vocal albums of the last few years (available at www.Amazon.com). You may know her as a contestant from Fox's On The Lot a few years back as well as the executive producer and director of Sex Ed: The Series, which was profiled on these pages last summer. Here is a video about her and her music as well as how Peter Krause came to executive producer her album.
More on SNL a bit further down in the column.
Huge props – and the promised bonus points – to Rob for nailing the "who has appeared in the most shows on my Top 40 list" question last week. He correctly submitted Charles Durning (Everybody Loves Raymond, Rescue Me, Everwood, Family Guy) and Katey Sagal (The Shield, Sons of Anarchy, Lost, Boston Legal) & Alyson Hannigan (Buffy, Angel, How I Met Your Mother, Veronica Mars). For his tremendous efforts Rob receives our first ever "Two Tivos To Paradise Reader of the Week" award!!!! On a related note, that's the volume of comments I like to see – keep it up!!!
Quick interview update; my chat with Tim Daly (Private Practice) ran yesterday (use the links below to pull it up) and a one-on-one with Mark Derwin from The Secret Life of the American Teenager will be up on the site on Monday.
Said I wouldn't call but I lost all control and I need news now.
I Know That I'm Not Perfect And That I Don't Claim To Be So Before You Poke That Finger Be Sure Your Hands Are Clean
The NY Post set off a media frenzy last Saturday with a news item quoting unnamed sources connected with American Idol saying that the hit Fox series wants Howard Stern to replace the departing Simon Cowell at the judges table next season. The source went on to say that Stern was the top choice of Idol producers and that they had approached him already to begin a conversation about the job. Stern spent a large portion of Monday morning's edition of his Sirius radio show talking about what he would do as a judge, although he also said he was not going to comment on any negotiations that may or may not be going on.
Let's just be clear about this – Howard Stern is not going to replace Simon Cowell on American Idol. Sure, all this chatter may end up getting his a guest judge stint during the audition rounds but that's all it would turn out to be. Anyone who listens to Stern even casually (and I am an everyday listener) knows that he would never either fly to and from LA on a weekly basis for five months (let alone all the travel for the audition rounds) or would be move there for five months. He is an almost obsessive creature of habit who would be incapable of such a dramatic change of lifestyle.
And on the Idol side of things, they would never offer him the job as he simply isn't who they'd want to fill that role. Someone like him, as in someone with a well established personality who wouldn't appear to be trying to be Simon II in the role, sure, but not Howard.
I don't want to call the NY Post story bullshit but it came from Page Six of the NEW YORK POST, so you be the judge. Howard told his audience last week," I was approached by a major TV network to take over a TV show and leave here and do that next year -- and I did turn it down . . ." My guess is that NBC contacted him about America's Got Talent, which recently replaced David Hasselhoff with Howie Mandell as that seems a bit more likely, and that there have been no conversations between anyone connected with Idol and Stern.
Howard is brilliant at manipulating the media and now just about every major news outlet has had a item/story that comes from "unnamed sources connected with America Idol", from Extra to Entertainment Tonight to HLN to The View. He has been very clear not to say that they've actually talked with him as acknowledging that they hadn't would end the story. It's no coincidence that his Sirius deal is up at the end of 2010 as he is famous for making his contract negotiations public spectacle as a way of increasing both the volume and quality of offers he receives. Think about it – when was the last time Howard was such a topic of conversation? Answer, the last time his contract was up, when he made the jump to Sirius.
Even a Howard fan like me grew tired of him talking about it non-stop and by Thursday morning I switched to something else because the self obsession was hitting new heights. While, for the sake of argument, I will acknowledge that his presence would cause a ratings spike at the start, we are talking about a show that has been far and away the # 1 series on TV the last eight seasons, so when he talks about saving it it's not like he would be trying to salvage The Great American Dream Vote or anything.
I don't expect Idol to name a new judge until well after the season ends. Something to keep in mind as the name fly fast and furious is that Ellen's name was never one in the rumor mill before she took Paula Abdul's spot so it's entirely possible that the person who sits in Simon's chair next January will be someone who hadn't been mentioned as a contender.
Give Me Back My Broken Night, My Mirrored Room, My Secret Life
Multiple outlets reported that FlashForward showrunner David Goyer was leaving the series to focus on his film career. Because Goyer had no TV experience, Marc Guggenheim (Eli Stone, Brothers & Sisters, Law & Order) was the first showrunner, handing over the reins to Goyer as planned late last fall. FF premiered to strong ratings and critical acclaim in September but had lost more than 40% of its audience over its three month run. The show is set to return to the ABC line up on March 30th, and there is no word on who will be taking over for Goyer.
Never a good sign with this much turnover at the top of the masthead in this short a period of time, but since I didn't think what they were churning out was such a high quality product to begin with, these changes may end up making me more interested in giving FF another try. As I have written several times, series lead Joseph Fiennes was so woodened and uninteresting that I couldn't stay with the show after the first two episodes. I usually don't like to engage in fantasy TV booking but I remember watching the Caprica premiere and being struck by how much better FF would have been with Esai Morales in the lead.
One Of These Days I'm Gonna Wake Up, Skies Gonna Be Blue, One Of These Days I'm Gonna Wake Up To A Sun Shining Through
In our continued efforts to give readers some insight into different aspects of the world of television, this week TTTP would like to introduce you to Jeff and Greg Burns, a musical duo (yes, they are brothers) who have worked as engineers with some of the biggest names in music of the last 50 years, including Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Dr Dre, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and Aerosmith. Their work can be heard worldwide on a daily basis as they compose the score used on NCIS, the top rated scripted series in the US. We recently caught up with them via email to discuss their careers.
TTTP: How old were the two of you when you both decided that you wanted to work not only in music but to do together?
Greg: We both started learning guitar and performing in high school at around the age of 13 but it wasn't until we were about 22 that we really felt like a music career could be a reality. As far as working together, we've made music from day one. We both feel so lucky to have continued to work together our entire career. We have always thought it worked to our advantage to have each other. We can bounce creative ideas off each other and share technical information. It's been great.
TTTP: How does one break into the world of music production?
Jeff: Breaking in to the business is tougher than ever. When we started, we started at Oceanway Recording in Hollywood, a recording studio complex which consisted of 7 rooms at the time. The studios would be filled constantly with incredible artists, producers and engineers. We got to be around music, talent and opportunity every day. Now that the industry has changed and so many people have home studios, it's harder to be around so many talented people and the opportunities have become harder to come by. We would recommend to be creative about your networking, work hard and make your opportunities where you can. Going to a recording school like The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences which has an internship program might also help by placing you with an artist or producer in their home studio.
TTTP: And from there, how do you cross over into television?
Greg: I might recommend getting into licensing your music to shows as a first step into TV music. That's how we started. We placed lots of our pop/rock and jazz music into the background of TV shows. We had placed so much music that it got the attention of the music department at Paramount. Eventually, this led us to our first show, "Andy Richter Controls the Universe." Licensing your music is a great way to practice your craft and showcase your music.
TTTP: What is the creative process like with NCIS; do you get the scripts and write from that? Are there conversations about specific scenes with producers?
Jeff: We usually get the finished show (without music) about a week before it airs. The process starts with a spotting meeting with the producers where we talk about where the music will stop and start for each scene and what emotions need to be expressed. Then we take the show home to our studios and, along with our writing partner Brian Kirk, we start writing the show. This is our fourth season on the show so we have a pretty good handle on what to write for different types of scenes.
TTTP: While the two of you aren't household names it must be incredibly rewarding knowing that between new episodes and reruns of NCIS, 50+ million people worldwide hear your music.
Greg: We aren't household names?? LOL. Well, we never wanted to be household names we just wanted and want to make music. For us, music is our number one priority. It's not about money or fame of anything else. Yes, it is rewarding to work on a successful project like "NCIS" but our biggest reward is that we can make music and make a living.
TTTP: What are some of your other current projects? Where can my readers hear more of your music?
Jeff: Well, at this point, "NCIS" is our full time gig. So tune in Tuesday nights to hear what we are up to. Fans of "Max Steel" can hear our music in his animated movie series that is released on DVD each year. We also occasionally put out an album for one of our side projects: Solamingus and Supertweeker. Both projects are available on iTunes and Amazon.
Like A Coin In Your Mint, I Am Dented And Spent With High Treason
With news about casting for pilot season running wild (whatcha gonna do…) I thought I'd break it out of the News and Notes section to give it a proper spotlight….
*Emmy winner Michael Chiklis will star in No Ordinary Family as the Dad in a seemingly regular family where all the members have super powers. Greg Berlanti (Everwood, Brothers & Sisters, Dirty Sexy Money) is the executive producer.
*Daniel Dae Kim's first post-Lost gig will be as Detective Chin Ho Kelly in CBS' reboot of Hawaii 5-0. Alex O'Loughlin (Moonlight), who has been rumored to be in negotiations to play Steve McGarret for some time, also officially came on board this week.
*Two Friday Night Lights alums got cast this week; Minka Kelly is one of four friends who are the focus of the CBS romantic comedy True Love and Zach Gilford will play the romantic lead in ABC's Matadors, a legal drama about rival families in Chicago. Oscar nominated actor David Strathairn will play the patriarch of one of the aforementioned families.
*TTTP favorite Andrea Anders (Better Off Ted, The Class) will be Matthew Perry's love interest on ABC's Mr. Sunshine. Last week it was announced that Emmy winner Alison Janney (The West Wing) had joined the project as well. Sadly, Anders signing on for this makes it pretty clear that Ted will not be returning.
*Jason Ritter landed the lead in the NBC everyman caught in a vast conspiracy series The Event.
*Jesse Metcalf (Desperate Housewives) and Cole Hauser will star in Chase, a NBC dramatic pilot about a fugitive apprehension team from Jerry Bruckheimer.
*Freddy Rodriguez (Six Feet Under, Ugly Betty) is the lead in the Bret Ratnor directed pilot Chaos for CBS as a government agent who actually believe he can make the world a better place.
*David Krumholtz starring in Ron Howard's IRS comedy pilot for Fox makes it looks like the odds of Numb3rs return are pretty limited (Krumholtz would be contractually obligated to return to Numb3rs if CBS does pick it up).
*TBS has ordered pilots for two comedies, In Security (two sisters who run a private security company for the rich and famous) and Franklin & Bash (two hustling, streetwise lawyers get recruited to run a big time law firm after beating them in court).
*NBC is said to be thisclose to giving a pilot order to Paul Reiser's untitled comedy that is based on his family life.
*Laura Prepon (October Road, That 70's Show) has signed as the female lead for ABC's Awkward Situations for Men, playing opposite Danny Wallace
*Enrique Muricano (Without A Trace) landed one of the leads in Shonda Rhimes new medical drama pilot Off The Map.
*In pilot directing news, Emmy winner Charles McDougall will helm Shawn Ryan's (The Shield) Ridealong. Previously MacDougall directed the pilots for The Good Wife and Desperate Housewives…Legendary comedy director James Burrows will shoot the pilots for Nathan vs. Nurture (NBC) and Open Books (CBS) while How I Met Your Mother's Pam Fryman will be behind the camera for Living on a Prayer (CBS) and Freshman (ABC).

All The Young Dudes, Carry The News

Turns Out Not Where But Who You're With That Really Matters
The top thing I watched since the last column went to press AKA The Best Of What's Around…While this past week's Saturday Night Live had its share of weak moments, the highs were high enough to take this honor. I have watched the Rahm Emmanuel sketch five times and it gets funnier, and sharper each and every time, easily the best bit of political writing the show has done all season
Also a highlight was this commercial for Cialis
:
Weekend update was sharp, with Jean K Jean and former Governor Eliot Spitzer proving much laughter. The final clip I'll give you is the Oscar nominations announcement, skewering both the Academy's attempts at pleasing the populace as well as the vapidity of shows like Extra.
People Say I'm Crazy Doing What I'm Doing. Well, They Give Me All Kinds Of Warnings To Save Me From Ruin
What's flashed before my eyes the last seven days…Last week's Moon Landing episode of Modern Family was a great example of a classic sitcom build, as you could see everything coming together to a comedy climax when Claire arrived home with her friend…How good is the FX animated comedy Archer? So good that right now it's not a matter of making my year end Top 10 list but rather how high up it will rank…I can't recall an actor playing two such different parts at the same time as Benjamin Koldyke is right now; he's doing great work as Albie's lover on Big Love as well as Robyn's co-anchor and love interest Don on How I Met Your Mother…I must admit to chuckling out loud a few times at this week's high school reunion episode of Accidently on Purpose. I know it's not a good show but I like it more than the ratings juggernaut that is Two and a Half Men…The way Cougar Town has developed the supporting characters over the course of these first few months of the series should be used as an example for future comedies; despite all the hype about Courtney Cox, this is an ensemble piece, and a very good one to boot…This was the first Life Unexpected I had watched since getting the first three to review late in 2009 and my love for the series continues unabated…Ellen did a good job on her first couple of American Idols, mixing her humor in with genuine criticism…I wish Big Love had one or two more episodes in which to work with this season so there wouldn't be so much plot jammed in each week but that's not going to bump it off my list of the top shows on TV anytime soon…Three episodes in and this is hands down my favorite season of Damages so far, with some great pacing and plot developments happening much earlier than I would have expected, making me wonder what the other show is and when it will drop. Campbell Scott and Martin Short have been excellent, as have all the returning regulars…This Monday's Chuck ended on a solid note, almost giving permission for the show to go away from the Chuck-Sara relationship for a while. I was annoyed in the first 15 minutes by them not allowing Hannah and Chuck to have even a moment or two of peace and enjoyment; I'd like an episode that was mission free, so we can see what it is everyone does with the rest of their time. Also, poor Morgan…Willie Garson has such presence on White Collar that his absence was noticeable on an otherwise strong episode this week…I've got to say I found this week's Lost to be one of the worst in series history. The stuff with Kate and Claire was well acted but provided no insight whatsoever and all the "action" on the island was pretty uninforming as well. Yes, Josh Holloway is a great actor and his journey as Sawyer is remarkable but when we are in the final season of the show I expect to learn something each week, or at the least come away with a new question I want an answer to. Seeing Claire alive at the end with a rifle was hardly worth the hour. It was one of the few times I have ever watched Lost and wondered what else I had to watch in my "now playing folder"…
TV Pick Of The Week
The 2010 Winter Olympics start tonight with the spectacle that is the opening ceremony (7:30 pm, NBC). Topping the visuals that Beijing gave us two years ago will be tough but Vancouver has been planning for a while so I won't put anything past them. Here are the highlights of each day of coverage (all on NBC unless otherwise noted):
Thursday: Men's Ice Hockey, USA – Norway (noon, USA); Women's Ice Hockey, USA – Finland (5:30 pm MSNBC); Men's Figure Skating: Free Skate (8 pm)
Don't miss the Winter Olympics, all week on NBC
Hope You Need My Love, Babe, Just Like I Need You
Here is some other noteworthy programming of the next seven days
*Fresh off of Absolute Justice, Smallville takes on another topic bound to make the fan boys happy – comic book conventions.
*NBA All-Star Weekend begins tonight with the All-Star Celebrity Game at 7 pm on ESPN with the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge at 9 pm on TNT. Tomorrow you've got a big game of H.O.R.S.E at 7 pm on TNT followed by All-Stat Saturday Night at 8 pm, which features the dunk and three point shooting contests. The game itself has a 7 pm tip off on TNT on Sunday night.
*Survivors (Saturday, BBC America, 8 pm) is a new show about a group of people who survive (duh!) an apocalyptic event. I was hoping to show my verbatim knowledge of the lyrics of High On You and The Search Is Over but that will have to wait for another series.
*Bill Maher…But I'm Not Wrong (Saturday HBO, 10 pm) is the latest comedy special from the stand up turned talk show host. When you are talking politics you run the risk of your material being dated five minutes later but that won't make it any less funny (and on target) tomorrow night.
*Ruby (Sunday, 8 pm, Style) season two premiere
*On your marks, get set, go; The Amazing Race 16 begins Sunday at 8 pm on CBS.
*How to Make It in America (Sunday, 10 pm) is the latest comedy series from HBO. From the producing team that brought us Entourage, it tells the story of a couple of guys hustling to make money in New York. Bryan Greenberg, long a TTTP favorite, is one of the leads. Considering how much I love Hung and Bored To Death, I will be giving this new show plenty of opportunity to earn a season pass.
*TV Land celebrates adding Boston Legal reruns to their lineup with a 12 episode marathon that begins at noon, bookended by the show's premiere and finale.
*The 134th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (Tuesday, 8 pm, USA) is usually good for a few minutes of entertainment, although it's nowhere near as good as Best In Show.
*American Idol (Wednesday, 9 pm, Fox) picks the final 24 contestants, meaning for those of you only interested in the show when it gets serious, now is when you should start watching.
*Leverage seems to have found some traction in TNT's line up, which is why Wednesday's (10 pm) season finale is just that, a season – and not a series – sign off.

Knowing that you have the Deadliest Catch on season pass, I was keeping an out for reference to the passing of Captain Phil Harris.
Having been influential part of the show's success, the lack of coverage of his passing has bothered me somewhat.
I realise it isn't your duty to cover such things, but being a fan of your work I was hoping to hear what words you may have had on the subject. As i'm sure that they would have been comforting to me or at least respectful (if you weren't a fan of his).
R.I.P. Phil Harris, thanks for the memories

Yeah I marked out pretty good when Mac appeared on screen, but he was horribly miscast on that show. I love him on Sunny, but on Lost I was just waiting for him to do something stupid, and for Charlie to come out.

Saying something is better than 2.5 men is not a justification to watch the lazy crap that comes out of accidently on purpose.
Posted By: sigh (Guest) on February 12, 2010 at 06:09 AM
And the other guy with Mac was BLT from the original Degrassi Jr High! Hard to take Mac seriously as a tough guy.

The only way i would watch the god awful "karaoke contest" as Howard Stern called it is if he were the judge. Its an awful show, if they let Howard be Howard and turn it into "Howard Sterns American Idol" it would be worthwhile. Sound effects from Fred, Singers losing thier tops if the audience votes them down, trap doors for crappy singers. How about a Chocolate Bandit mask from Sal for the pne who gets voted off?

Gene Simmons should take Simon's spot. Or Ozzy.

I kept waiting for Mac to bust out his kung-fu moves on Jin, but alas it wasn't meant to be...

Nice choice of lyrics preceeding the story about Flash Forward. I hope things work out as I've really gotten into the show as it's gone on. I do agree with you though that a different lead actor (Garret Dilahunt anyone?) would make it better.

I really wasn't amused by "What is Burn Notice?" but I did like the SNL overall and the Emanuel sketch was gold. Especially the Palin slams.
Why did you say Heroes "signed off"? Is the show in that much trouble of coming back after the Olympics?
The Superbowl beating MASH doesn't really seem like an accomplishment. In fact, I think it's generally a stupid feat. At least half the people watching the Superbowl aren't watching the Superbowl.
MASH captured the attention of the nation. The Superbowl is some annual event and reason to drink beer. Hardly the same, IMO.

Mario - Thanks for noticing the lyrics. I spend a decent amount of time matching songs to stories. Also, Garrett Dilahunt would have been an awesome choice for Flash Forward. Dean Winters, too.
HH - Monday was the season finale of Heroes, so it's done for now. My guess is NBC brings it back for a final run, maybe 12-15 episodes so they can get the ratings bump from a hyped final season.
