Two Tivos To Paradise 03.12.10: Come For The South Park DVDs, Stay for the TV News
Posted by Al Norton on 03.12.2010

Hello Friends. I am still on a high from the truly beautiful weekend we had, which involved taking the twins to play outside for what seemed like the first time in ages. It's amazing to see them running (or at least fast walking) around our yard after remembering how tentative they were crawling around last spring.

Did you know that season 13 of South Park comes out on DVD and Blue Ray this coming Tuesday? Here's the official blurb:

South Park: The Complete Thirteenth Season Uncensored" DVD and Blu-Ray will be released nationwide on March 17th! All fourteen episodes from South Park's thirteenth season are available in this exclusive three-disc set. Roll with the boys as they save the economy, the whales, and a bunch of dead celebrities, all while discovering the joys of fish sticks. For them, it's all part of growing up in South Park!

For the first time ever, the DVD and Blu-Ray will include exclusive deleted scenes and the bonus features include "Inside Xbox: A Behind-the-Scenes Tour of South Park Studios" and free codes to unlock character and challenge levels in the "South Park: Let's Go Tower Defense Play" game on xBox Live Arcade. Episodes on the DVD version will be presented in widescreen format and the Blu-Ray version will be in full HD (1080p). Visit SouthParkStudios.com for more information.

Why is this important? Because I have two DVD sets to give away!!!! You know how I keep mentioning the Two Tivos To Paradise Facebook fan page? Well, if you want to win simply become a fan and then post "I want season 13 of South Park" on the page's wall. If you are already a fan you can skip the first step and just post the message and you will also be entered. Big thanks go out to the folks at Wired Set for providing us with the prizes.

One last note about the TTTP Facebook page, and it's a quote from three time TTTP TV Entertainer of the Year Joel McHale; "If you're on Facebook and not signed up for the most timely named Two Tivos To Paradise fan page then (in the immortal words of Tyra Banks) "kiss my ass.""

Last week's SNL was a mixed bag but Zack Galifianikis' monologue was a masterpiece…

Interview Update: my chat with Celebrity Apprentice participant and former WWE Diva Maria Kanellis will be up n the site this weekend and my one-on-one with Chuck's Ryan McPartlin will run on Monday.

I think we're alone now, the beating of our news is the only sound.

She Really Gets Me High, You Know That's No High, She's So Rock Steady, She's Always Ready
Lorne Michaels confirmed that Betty White would host the May 8th episode of Saturday Night Live, a Mother's Day edition that will feature various returning female cast members. Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Anya Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph, and Rachel Dratch will all be a part of the night as well, taking a bit of the burden off of the 88 year old White's shoulders.

Wow, let's hear it for Facebook! I mean, without that fan page going live the morning after the Super Bowl there is no way White ends up with this gig. Apparently she was asked to host in the past but turned it down for a number of reasons, but I am glad this great comedienne will finally get her turn on one of comedy's biggest stages.

Not that she wasn't great on The Golden Girls but if you only know her from that than you really should check her out as Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show; one of the reasons the casting of White on GG was so funny was how much of a bitch she was as The Happy Homemaker. I hope the SNL writers are already working on material fitting for both her stature and her abilities.

It's Nothing That I Haven't Seen Before But It Still Kills Me Like It Did Before
Variety is reporting that Fox Television and 20th Century Fox were close to announcing that the current season of 24 would be the show's last. Ratings for this year have been solid but not spectacular and the series very large budget plays a big role in the decision, as does the fact that they recently hired a writer to pen a big screen version of the action drama.

This is not a huge surprise but it's still noteworthy anytime a show that has enjoyed the run that 24 has shuts things down. The name Jack Bauer is forever a part of pop culture, and there is no reason to think the characters couldn't have a long life in theaters, an American James Bond, if you will.

Making the decision now gives the writers the chance to end on less of a cliffhanger than they would have normally, unless they decide to have an ending that leads into the movie. I was never a huge 24 fan but I always appreciated how many quality character actors they gave screen time to and will miss reading about all their extremely clever casting in the off-season.

Summer, It Turns Me Upside Down, Summer, Summer, Summer, It's Like A Merry Go Round
Fox revealed their late spring/early summer line up this week, including new shows and returning favorites.

Wednesday, 5/19
The Good Guys (sneak preview, 8 pm)

Thursday, 5/27
So You Think You Can Dance? (two hour season premiere)

Friday, 5/28
Past Life returns (special two hour episode, regular timeslot will be 9:00 pm)

Monday, 6/7
Lie To Me returns (8:00 pm)
The Good Guys (regular 9:00 pm timeslot)

Tuesday, 6/8
Glee season finale (9:00 pm)

Thursday, 6/10
Hell's Kitchen season premiere (8:00 pm, all episodes 2 hours long this season)

Tuesday, 6/15
So You Think You Can Dance? live competition episodes begin (8 – 10 pm)

Wednesday, 6/16
Glee's first season encores (8:00 pm)

Regular readers know how excited I am for The Good Guys (formerly known as Code 58), created by Matt Nix (Burn Notice) and starring Bradley Whitford as an aging cop coasting on a hero's reputation earned years ago who is partnered with an up and comer played by Colin Hanks. Whitford can do no wrong in my eyes – and yes, that includes the Sister of the Traveling Pants movies – and I am huge Burn Notice fan, so expectations are high.

As bad as Past Life is, I am glad that Fox is committing to run all the produced episodes. Other networks might want to take note of this concept. Two hours of Hell's Kitchen a week might be a bit much but from a cost point of view it makes perfect sense for Fox.

I am also thrilled my Glee withdrawal will only be 8 days.

Long Ago And Oh So Far Away, I Feel In Love With You Before The Second Show
ABC's Supernanny celebrates its 100th episode tonight at 8 pm. In honor of that we give you part two of our conversation with Supernanny herself, Jo Frost.

TTTP: How many families apply to be on Supernanny and how to you select them?

Jo Frost: I wouldn't even know, but it's got to be thousands. They are chosen with my approval. The process is they go to the production company and their casting department or they log on to ABC.com and they'll explain what their issues are. What I'm looking for is different families, for each week to help a family in a different situation, so that there is variety and that families who watch will eventually be able to say, "that's us." If we feel that we've found that than the family will be taped for a couple of days and I get to see what is probably about a two minute piece of footage and they we go ahead and do it.

I don't like to turn down anyone, it doesn't matter where they are. It's great because in six years I've become a well traveled Brit in America. 40 something states. I'd like to get to all 50; they're only a few left and if it doesn't happen before I decide to move on to a new project than I will just take the road trip anyway and put the stars on the map (laughing).

TTTP: What are some of the biggest mistakes parents make?

Jo Frost: I think it's important to keep talking. There's all this talk about having a baby and then the baby comes and all of a sudden you stop talking. You've got to keep talking. Parenting doesn't just stop at six months, it's a 24-7 job, it's a wonderful responsibility. Hey, as human beings who procreate, it's important to keep loving and being compassionate and recognize the importance of it, to cherish the time with family. It needs to be a priority, it needs to be that important, because nothing changes unless you put the time in to actually make it happen. That takes a lot of work. You speak to any parent on a day that's not so stressed and they wouldn't take it all back.

Don't miss Supernanny, tonight at 8 pm on ABC.

Like A Coin In Your Mint, I Am Dented And Spent With High Treason
With news about casting for pilot season running wild (whatcha gonna do…) I thought I'd break it out of the News and Notes section to give it a proper spotlight….

*Oscar winner Kathy Bates is thisclose to signing for the lead in David E Kelley's NBC legal drama pilot Kindreds. The part was originally written as a man but is being retooled specifically for Bates. Brittany Snow and Ben Chaplin are already on board.

*The already high profile HBO pilot Luck (executive produced by Michael Mann and David Milch and starring Dustin Hoffman and Dennis Farina) is in talks with Nick Nolte to join the cast. Kerry Condon and Tom Payne, both from HBO's Rome, are officially signed on, as is TTTP fave Kevin Dunn (Samantha Who?, the Transformers movies).

*Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer are the leads in the TBS comedy pilot Franklin & Bash, playing street smart lawyers who are hired to run the ritzy law firm they just beat in a lawsuit. Think of it as if Bobby Donnell and Jimmy the Grunt took over Wolfram & Hart.

*Jimmy Smits will play a Supreme Court Justice who resigns to go into private practice in an untitled NBC drama pilot from Conan O'Brien's production company.

*Keri Russell is in talks to play the female lead opposite Will Arnett in the Fox comedy Wilde Kingdom, which comes from the Arrested Development team of Mitch Hurwitz and Jim Vallely.

*Patrick Fugit, best known for his lead role in Almost Famous, has joined Debra Messing in the ABC comedy pilot Wright vs. Wrong, as has Melissa Rausch (The Big Bang Theory, Best Week Ever).

*Jason Biggs will play Minka Kelly's love interest on ABC's True Love, with Dan Fogler signing on in a supporting role.

*Numb3rs star Rob Morrow will play opposite Joely Richardson in ABC's legal drama The Whole Truth.

*Three time Emmy winner Jean Smart will play the Governor of Hawaii on CBS' Hawaii 5-0 remake.

*Tom Cavanagh (Ed, Eli Stone) has landed the lead in ABC's Edgar Floats, playing a police psychologist who moonlights as a bounty hunter.

*Elisha Cuthbert (24, The Forgotten) will play the female lead in ABC's comedy pilot Happy Endings, about a couple who calls their wedding off at the altar and tries to figure out where to go from there.

*Scott Foley is the latest to sign on to the ABC ensemble mystery drama True Blue.

*Aly Michalka, half of the pop duo Aly and AJ, will star in the Tom Welling produced college cheerleading drama Hellcats for The CW. Gail O'Grady will play her Mom.

Noted choreographer and fellow Dance judge Adam Shankman will present, and the ceremony itself will be once again hosted by Tom Bergeron..

Turns Out Not Where But Who You're With That Really Matters
The top thing I watched since the last column went to press AKA The Best Of What's Around…First and foremost, Sharon Gless is now on the short list for a Best Supporting Actress Norty this summer. In the first few episodes of Burn Noticee I thought her character was a weak link but over the last two seasons in particular the writers have stepped up and given Gless material worthy of her ample talents. This past Thursday watching her screw with the FBI was a treat, and her emotional breakdown at the end was totally believable.

Gless was not the only thing to enjoy about the Burn Notice season finale; any Garret Dillahunt sightings are to be appreciated, especially when he takes a stock character of crazy ex-government operative and still finds a way to make it his own. I was thrilled that they did not kill him as it means we are quite likely to see him again.

The very best thing about the episode may have been that we finally learned something about why Michael was burned in the first place. Networks need to understand that giving us little bits and pieces along the way is what keeps us interested in shows with ongoing mysteries. Maybe we won't get all the answers until the end but you have to give us something, and this hour did in a way that made it easily the best finale in the show's run.

People Say I'm Crazy Doing What I'm Doing. Well, They Give Me All Kinds Of Warnings To Save Me From Ruin
What's flashed before my eyes the last seven days...How great was this moment from The Soup Awards last Friday night?!?!?

Genius, pure and simple…A mid-level Grey's Anatomy this past week highlighted by the on-going rehabilitation of the Sheppard – Weber relationship; neither actor (Patrick Dempsey and James Pickens, Jr.) gets anywhere near enough credit for their work…Medium came very close to getting this week's Best of What's Around for an incredibly dark episode about Scanlon's brother. I was thrilled that they gave David Cubitt (who is British, by the way!!!) some meaty material to sink his teeth into as well as giving him the always excellent Dean Norris to play off of. Talk about versatile – put Norris work on Medium up against his role on Breaking Bad and his guest spots on The West Wing as head of the Republican Party and see if there is any resemblance between the three. The episode also kicked off Laura Prepon week in primetime, with her role as a serial killer (the good kind, of course) on Medium followed by a quality turn as the patient of the week on House…Two very strong weeks in a row for How I Met Your Mother; LOVED the musical number, and I dare you to tell me you didn't feel for Robin when they showed her crying outside the apartment…It was fun to have Gossip Girl back but I still am wondering why I watch, or rather who it is I am supposed to care about…Loved the in-bed banter on Rules of Engagement this week, and while I am not such a huge fan of milking mistaken spousal abuse for comedy, the "hit" itself was very funny and easily recognizable to anyone who has ever shared their bed…Damages strong run continues, and while I am starting to get a bit annoyed wondering how pieces like Keith Carradine's recurring architect/designer character and Ellen's drug addicted sister fit into everything, I am looking forward to see the glorious plot crescendo they have in store for us. This season has also shown that Campbell Scott shouldn't be cast as a good guy or a bad guy; he is at his best when operating in the ambiguities of grey…Another week, another funny episode of Modern Family. I loved Phil's confusion at the tone people attach to Facebook posts…Michael Emerson's brilliance on Lost reached new levels this week when we got to see the flash sideways of Ben's life. His getting another chance to "save" Alex was an emotional high point of the season. Speaking of emotional high points, if I felt the way that I did at the small reunion on the beach at the end, how much of a wreck am I going to be when some of the bigger reuniting moments occur?...

TV Pick Of The Week

Take a couple of works from the pen of Elmore Leonard, perhaps the best crime novelist of his generation (with only Ed McBain as a true peer), have those works adapted by Emmy winner Graham Yost (Raines, Boomtown, Band of Brothers, The Pacific) put it on a network that as a rule produces high quality dramas, and then cast as the lead one of my favorite actors never to headline a series in Timothy Olyphant, and you've got my attention. Not only is Justified all of those things but it's also got Natalie Zea as a regular, who impressed on Dirty Sexy Money and then blew me away on Hung.

Don't miss the series premiere of Justified, Tuesday at 10 pm on FX.

Hope You Need My Love, Babe, Just Like I Need You
Here is some other noteworthy programming of the next seven days…

*Supernanny (ABC) combines a 100th episode Best Of celebration with its season finale tonight at 9 pm.

*It's a safe bet that tonight's Numb3rs is not just a season finale but a series finale as well. It's also a safe bet that whatever holds the Fridays at 10 pm timeslot next fall for CBS won't match the ratings the show has put up.

*Dinoshark (9 pm, Saturday, Syfy). Really, do I have to say anything else?

*March Madness is upon us!!!! Fill out your bracket with the NCAA Basketball Championship Selection Show Sunday at 6 pm, and then get ready for crazy hoops; the play-in game is Tuesday night at 7:30 pm on ESPN and then the tournament begins in earnest Thursday at noon on CBS.

*The new season of The Celebrity Apprentice kicks off Sunday at 9 pm on NBC with a shockingly recognizable group of celebrities. Ok, maybe they're only recognizable if you are 35 and over but still, this is a big step up from the first two seasons.

*The Pacific, a 10 hour HBO mini-series, begins Sunday at 9 pm, and it's exactly as good as you'd expect based on the track record of everyone involved. Take note that the first two hours are actually the weakest in terms of character development so stick with it!

*Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks (Sunday, 9 pm, ESPN) is must-see TV for any basketball fans, especially those who were following the NBA in the 80's and 90's. ESPN's 30 for 30 series has been across the board excellent and I can't wait until next Christmas when the box set goes on sale.

*Tyler Labine takes the shtick that worked so well for him on Reaper and turns it into the lead role on a not-as-bad-as-you-might-think-considering-the-9:30-on-Sunday-Night-timeslot Sons of Tucson. It takes what would have been the plot of a brilliant Malcolm in the Middle episode and stretches it out for a full series but Labine is funny enough to make it worth your while.

*Kendra premieres a new season Sunday at 10 pm on E!. Who watches these shows? Seriously, who?

*VH-1 premieres to new shows about physical appearance on Monday night; first at 10 pm you've got Jessica Simpson's The Price of Beauty followed at 10:30 pm by Transform Me.

*The final 12 of American Idol (Fox) take the stage for the first time Tuesday at 8 pm.

*As much as I've enjoyed Scrubs (8:00 pm, ABC) this season (and I have, especially the JD-less episodes), there is no doubt they should have called it a day with last spring's brilliant one hour finale. Wednesday's episode will more than likely be the actual series finale – it's the season finale and there is really no way they are bringing it back again – but it won't pack anywhere near the same emotional punch.

*Gary Unmarried brings its second season to a close Wednesday at 8:30 pm with the show firmly on the renewal bubble. Its fate really depends on the quality of CBS comedy pilots, so fans should keep their fingers crossed that these new shows suck.

*FlashForward (Thursday, 8 pm, ABC) returns with their first new episodes of the year in the hopes of regaining some of the momentum that launched the series last fall.

*Archer (FX), yet another of the incredible string of new comedies this TV season, airs its season finale Thursday at 10 pm.

I like Lie To Me and it sucks that it doesn't come back til June! Seems like they're canceling it. Shame.

Gail O'Grady getting cast in this pilot is a JOKE! Who did she screw for this part? She is a manipulative liar, and a disgrace to mothers, and real victims everywhere. Bad move on CW's part. There are many, MORE deserving actresses out there for the role. Gail O'Grady needs help, not a tv show. She should concintrate on being a good mother and not use her innocent son as prop for disgusting publicity stunt to falsely accuse people of heinous acts.

Dare I ask, what the hell are you talking about with Gail O'Grady? I went to her Wiki page and found nothing that made that rant make sense.

That Wings of Love skit was the best thing ever on the soup. Much to the annoyance of my wife I've been singing 23 comfy locations just for you all week long.

The promo for the new Lost was great. Love that they used Bird on a Wire. Definitely fits Sawyer's character very well.

Armand I've got agree with John. Gail O'Grady is about as evil as they get. She pulled a low ball trailer trash move by making up a story someone stalked her after she took whatever she could. She is a manipulative psychotic.
