Plus, the box office breakdown, DVD news, and an exclusive interview with Len Archibald about his movie, Beating Traffic! All this and more inside!
Welcome back to the Big Screen Bulletin! My name is Steve Gustafson and we've got a ton of movie news to cover this week, so let's get it started! Real quick, I'm part of the management team for hip hop artist John Public. He just released a new mixtape and I'm spreading the word. Hit me up at stevethegoose@gmail.com for the free download. If you're not sure, just ask for a free sample and I'll shoot you over a couple of tracks to peruse with your ear.
Man, some of you were straight miserable last week! Let's hope things improved for you! And to settle this ugly Transformers debate I asked Chuck Norris what he thought. He said it stunk! DEBATE CLOSED!
If you haven't been over to the Music section, I suggest you take a look. Due to the...popularity...of my other column, the Hollywood 5 & 1, we have a new "sister" column. The Music 5 & 1 by Adam Hill. I'm diggin it and so should you!
I interviewed Skye Lewin, a music editor (and SO MUCH MORE) for CSI:Miami, Entourage, and How to Make it in America! A cool read to get a glimpse behind the scenes of your favorite shows.
So what else do I do around these parts? Let's take a look at all things Steve: Monday:Big Screen Bulletin. OSCAR MADNESS! Wednesday:The Silicon Valley 10 & 1. Top 10 Coolest Final Fantasy Characters! Oh, I made the announcement that the next edition will be my last due to scheduling. :Single tear: Saturday & Sunday:The Hollywood 5 & 1. Gossip and hot women.
If you've haven't read 411mania's Around the World in 24 Frames, then you may be missing out on one of the best written columns out there. You'll also be missing out on Len Archibald, screenwriter extraordinaire! I had a chance to chat with Len about his newest project, Beating Traffic, and what else he has on his plate.
Steve Gustafson: Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions. For the uneducated, what's Beating Traffic about?
Len Archibald:Beating Traffic is what I dub a "rural romance", it takes place in Rockford, OH, a little town of 1400 people. Jay (Jonathan Perkins) is a talented singer/songwriter who discarded his dreams to help his struggling family. Just as he is about to forget about her, Crystal (Crystal Cully), Jay's high-school sweetheart who is now an aspiring actress, makes a sudden re-appearance in his life. Timing and circumstances keep the two missing each other, physically and emotionally, and they must decide to take a chance on each other or let fate decide the path of their relationship.
SG: Nice! Sounds like an interesting plot that plenty of people can relate to. Where did the inspiration for the story come from?
Len Archibald:Well, I live in Rockford, so the inspiration came pretty easily. I was watching Yasujiro Ozu's 1953 film Tokyo Story and the thought struck me to make a simple love story in his style, no villains, no contrived story. Especially with the economic times we're living in right now, I felt that a story of how one may throw their talents away to better brace themselves in the name of simple security would be poignant. I also took a lot of ideas of my cast while writing and shooting as well. There are a lot of improvised "small" moments that give the film a nice realism.
SG: Ozu's Tokyo Story! Now that's inspiration! Describe working on the film?
Len Archibald:I wrote the first draft of the script in two months and spent a third writing about ten more! I just spent a lot of time polishing it and making sure what I had could work.
We shot every weekend from the beginning of November up until Christmas, with re-shoots and 2nd unit work done in January. We began the post-production immediately once I received the dailies from that first night of shooting. It was a COLD shoot for most of the outdoor scenes, with winds whipping all around us. We had to do some post-sync and sound editing as well.
SG: After the filming was complete, what was the process like, taking something so close to you and having to edit it, form it into something people all over would be watching?
Len Archibald:It's insane, to be honest, because as much as I've always talked a big game to my family and friends about making a movie and garnering attention for it, it's just a surreal feeling actually SEEING it on a big screen and hearing criticism or praise. What's up there have been really, for the most part, my private thoughts and feelings and now they're basically published and naked for all to see. It's nice, it's just weird seeing people mention my name or the title of my film and I don't know them.
SG: Welcome to the big time! (Laughs) Can you talk about the premiere? How were you feeling leading up to it? At the premiere?
Len Archibald:The premiere was a two-night private screening for friends, family and members of the local press. I think it's safe to say that the entire cast and crew were terribly nervous. For most of us, this was our first major involvement in a film. I remember my hands shaking, and I've been TRULY nervous only three times in my life.
We expected a particular number in regards to turn out, and it looked like we had a *decent* number of people who arrived. Then 7:30pm hit and we had a RUSH. We had 46% more than anticipated on Friday and 29% more than anticipated on Saturday. We needed to pull extra seats for Saturday night!
I was terrified that the audience would not like it. Once the film ended and the credits began to roll, there was SILENCE. Like pin drop silence. I'm sitting in the back with my wife, Jessica (who also played a role in Beating Traffic), hands sweaty, stoic and thinking, "My GOD. They HATE it!" Then the applause and the cheers came. Then all the attention from friends of friends of friends of friends. Then one of the most praise-worthy reviews came out following. I really say that I felt that the cast and crew accomplished something special those two evenings.
SG: Wow. That's awesome. But what a relief, and to have an audience validate your effort is incredible. What's next for Beating Traffic?
Len Archibald:Because of high turnout, insane word-of-mouth and just the overall attention that the film received, we're showing a public screening of Beating Traffic on April 10th, at The Marsh Foundation in Van Wert, OH. Since we have rules for various film festivals restrict the producers from charging tickets, it will be free admission. We have been accepting donations, though, just to help with the fees to submit to festivals all around the country, promotional material, and technical processing fees, the film was shot on DV, so for some festivals, we will need to blow up the print to 16mm or 35mm film.
After that, if all goes well, Beating Traffic will be on the festival circuit, most likely beginning in the summer.
SG: Big things! What's next for you?
Len Archibald:Well, you can always catch me every Friday, RIGHT HERE AT 411MANIA.COM! *thumbs up* I highlight foreign films every week with my column Around the World in 24 Frames. I really can't express how grateful I have been to Chad, Ashish and the entire movie-zone staff for making me part of the 411 Family.
I am also involved in Agatha Christie's The Unexpected Guest, a murder mystery that will be performed at the Van Wert Civic Theater from March 18th to March 27th. We have a great, talented cast. If you never heard of Jack Paullus, you need to! And an equally great director in Mr. George Dunster. If one ever has the desire to pass through, they are in for a good time at the theater.
After that, I will be basically putting all my time and effort into the promotion of Beating Traffic and try to garner as much attention as possible through festivals. I have other screenplays and ideas floating around, but I think (and Jessica thinks (Laughs)) it would be best to take a little break for a couple of months once that is all said and done. I won't stop making films or writing, though. As long as I have a pen and a camera, it's impossible to stop me from doing what I love to do.
SG: Len, thanks again for talking with me.
Folks, do yourself a favor and get on the Len Bandwagon. Beating Traffic is garnering serious heat and looking to make an impact on the festival circuit. Check out Len's column and/or email beatingtraffic@aol.com for more information.
If you're new to the Bulletin, I've classified the news by a symbol in front of the news segment. That way, if you're looking for certain information, just look for the logo. Easy enough to decipher but to ease your reading pleasure I've provided a legend for you. I've included the "legend" below.
Let's dive into the weekend!

Audiences continued to be enchanted with , which brought in an estimated $62 million in its second week. Disney must be very happy with this. This was over $20 million more than the grosses of all four new wide releases combined. Not only that, the 3D supporters will be trumpeting these numbers to bring the 3D tech to future movie projects.
Director Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon's Green Zone made a weak $14.5 million and it will ultimately gross only a fraction of its reported $100 million production budget. This was the latest Middle East-themed movie to perform mediocre at the box office. She's Out of My League may have suffered from not having a familiar lead (Don't bring up Hangover to counter that, Jay Baruchel is no Bradley Cooper.) while Remember Me showed that Robert Pattinson needs to cherish his Twilight time.
Outside of Alice, the box office was underwhelming but still up 45% from last year, thanks to Burton's 3D wonder. Next week has a real grab bag of selections with The Bounty Hunter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Runaways, and Repo Men. Results should be interesting.
This weekend several sites were buzzing over the LatinoReview.com interview with an unnamed 'inside source' at Marvel. Does the source provide juicy information about the upcoming movie projects? You betcha! But until any of this is confirmed, I'm holding back any real thought or judgment. Yeah, this sounds cool, but even I, all the way down on the reporting totem pole, get emails with "scoops" and once had someone send me 10 pages of the Captain America script (It was fake, but I have to admit it was really well done!). Is it me or are all these rumors starting to wear on everyone? I'm finding myself not caring who will play Captain America. JUST CAST SOMEONE! Half of Hollywood is rumored to be in the running and every day I read an article about so-and-so having the inside track or this guy getting the nod. It's starting to become white noise to me.
I'm not putting the full "interview" in here. Just bits and pieces. Check it out:
LatinoReview How does Thor fit into this time-line?
MYSTERY SOURCE: "In terms of time-line, Thor is set after The Incredible Hulk. In the script we make mention of gamma radiation and one of the scientist characters, I think Stellan Skarsgard's Professor Ford recalls, "There was brilliant scientist (Bruce Banner). He was a genius with gamma radiation and somehow S.H.I.E.L.D. made him disappear." So Thor's story would take place after The Incredible Hulk. At this point, Nick Fury and Tony Stark would have already started amassing people [for the Avengers team]."
LR: When does Thor become a full-fledged member of the Avengers?
MS "Basically, at the end of the movie, Thor makes mention to Clark Gregg's character Agent Coulson that his kingdom of Asgard and S.H.I.E.L.D. are on the same side and whenever they need his help, he will be there to assist them in battle. It does leave it open, with Thor basically saying "When you need me and you want to assemble a team, I'm down." So, this is obviously pre-Avengers, post-Incredible Hulk."
LR: How is Kenneth Branagh handling comic book material like Thor?
MS: "Branagh is fantastic. The guy is a passionate director. He makes everything and everyone important, no matter how small their role in the production is. He's keeping the material very close to the comic. The tone is – even the way the stuff looks – is darker. So it's cool. Iron Man was cool because it was light, but not too light like the Batman movies that Tim Burton made and it was not as heavy as say, Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight. Iron Man was the perfect comic book movie because it was the light and the dark sides sort of mixed together. Thor balances the same things as well. It plays the light side with the stuff on Earth and then the heavier side with what happens up in Asgard and the battle that occurs. Marvel has done a really good job of trying to blend what they need to have a successful movie and what they need to keep all the fan boys happy. They're doing an excellent job."
LR: How is Chris Hemsworth doing with the title role?
MS: "He's not only f*ing great, but a cool guy and about as normal a guy that you'll ever meet. I know everyone is saying that. Chris had auditioned for another movie, but failed to win the part, yet he was very open and self-deprecating about it. He even said "Yeah, yeah. I auditioned for that. But apparently I was pretty terrible." He'll have that sort of attitude about it and kind of make fun of himself. "Yeah, I pretty much stunk the joint up when I went in and auditioned for that." He's got that kind of self deprecating humor. Very, very cool dude. He is a perfect Thor. The guy's a physical specimen. He's 6'4''/6'5'' and he's built like a brick house. He looks like he came down off that Rainbow Bridge and was ready to rock."
LR: What's the real story about Townsend's abrupt exit from the production?
MS: "It appears he wasn't happy with the limited screen-time of his character Fandral. There was friction with him from the very beginning as far back as his screen test which he basically blew off. He wasn't the first choice of either Marvel or the film's producers to begin with, but when they brought him in they liked him. They thought he did a good job. It looks like the fact that his character doesn't have a pivotal role in the movie made him sort of slack off and say, "Well, f**k this movie. I'm not the lead, so who f*cking cares?" They say he had a similar attitude when he made The Lord of the Rings ten years ago and look how that turned out. They replaced him with Viggo Mortensen and the rest is history. He failed to realize the movie is not called Fandral, it's called Thor. The movie's not about him. Its surprising, because he was one of the longest working actors on the project yet he still acts like a diva. There was an incident where he had a costume test and blew that off. The studio had people working under deadlines fly in to meet him and he showed up six hours late. When they complained, his response was something like "Oh, well could we just do it now?" Talk about arrogance. Townsend's been replaced by another actor named Joshua Dallas and he's just come from doing Red Tails near San Francisco where the rumors of George Lucas directing re-shoots on the film are not rumors, they're true."
LR: When might we finally see a teaser trailer?
MS: "Probably at Comic Con. The scheduled release is date is May 6, 2011. I think that's the actual release date, handed down from Marvel. They could put it in front of the new Iron Man 2 movie, but that's this May and a little too soon. Marvel wants to release the film exactly a year after Iron Man 2. The release is almost 365 days later. And then Captain America in July 2011 and The Avengers will be the following year, 2012. That's what they're trying to do, line them up like that. May of every year, there will be a new Marvel movie out."
LR Everyone has their own personal choices about who should play Captain America. What's yours?
MS "My choice for Captain America would be Matt Damon."
LR: But that's not going to happen.
MS: "No. Personally, I know little of the work from the guy's on the short list, except for John Krasinski, but I don't think he' right for the role. He's too tall and he's oriented more to TV sitcoms or comedic films. I just don't think he's the right fit for Captain America. I'm hearing the tests for him are not really going well. But don't feel bad for John, his fiance is Emily Blunt who would have made a great Black Widow. The other potential actors I don't know too well. I know what they look like, and I've seen some of their material, but Captain America needs to be played by a strong actor. He's got to have incredibly strong character because not only does become an Adonis from the Super-Soldier serum, but he develops into an amazing fighter. He also has to be a guy who can establish order in complete chaos. With the Avengers, you've got Tony Stark being funny and doing his thing. You've got Thor who is a God and a bit of a loose cannon and you've got the Incredible Hulk. You need a guy who's a disciplined leader. Most importantly, as leader of The Avengers Cap needs an actor whose presence can even overshadow that of Robert Downey Jr. After all, Tony Stark sort of ends up following him, right?"
LR: There's also talk of the Hulk being the villain in The Avengers. Perhaps through a misunderstanding by the team or under Loki's influence...
MS: "I think in the first Avengers film, the Hulk should be the villain, in a way. There should also be another arc in the story or perhaps a bigger storyline. The Hulk personally is my favorite character in all comics. He's the guy who represents the inner rage and the animal inside of everyone and I think something's gotta drive him where he thinks he's under attack by these guys who are basically just trying to subdue him. It sets up an interesting dynamic. I don't think the Hulk should be the main villain, but I think he should be a distraction. I think everyone else is in order and he's the only one who, at a moments notice, can go off. He represents rage in all man."
LR At the end of The Incredible Hulk Tony Stark has a cameo where he says to Gen. Ross, "You have a problem."
MS: "Exactly. You need to have the Hulk brought under control. And that's what they want. "This guy could be the most powerful being on earth and he should be dealing with us. We don't want him to fall into enemy hands." I think if you have something like that where they are trying to wrangle him in and then realize they really do need him. That was basically the story line with the Incredible Hulk. The Hulk was always trying to be subdued, always trying to be controlled. But when the sh*t hit the fan, who would come in to save the day? The Incredible Hulk, one of the most powerful beings on the planet. The problem with that is that he's unpredictable. You never know what he's going to do. Though they suggested at the end of that film that Bruce Banner had finally mastered control over his transformations and perhaps the monster so that element might work too."
LR: Do you think there's gonna be another Hulk movie?
MS: "I don't know. I think there should be another Hulk movie because let's face it, Ang Lee's version wasn't the best interpretation. Edward Norton's Hulk was a little more faithful to the material. I wish it had been a little more successful because then it would lock him in. If somewhere down the line they do Planet Hulk which is when the Avengers try to trick him to do this mission, then sedate him and shoot him into space, that might be nice too. He lands on an alien planet, becomes a gladiator and eventually leads a race of warriors back to Earth. That would be nice to see in live action. Seeing him seek revenge on those that betrayed him, Mr. Fantastic, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, and even ripping the roof off Madison Square Garden. Something like that could be huge and I think Hulk deserves a movie like that. But the next time we see him will probably be in The Avengers movie."
LR: What other characters are going to be in The Avengers?
MS: "Not entirely sure, but I read like everyone else Joe Quesada from Marvel posting on Twitter that he was printing out the first draft. I think it would have to be Wasp. You have to have Wasp and you have to have Ant Man who are also romantically linked. But Ant Man's own movie doesn't appear to be happening right now. You also need Natasha Romanova who is the Black Widow. Scarlett Johansson plays her in Iron Man 2, so I imagine the plan is the bring her over for that and she'd be perfect. You need Captain America, Thor, Hulk and Iron Man. Then there's Nick Fury sort of guiding them all. "
Steve here. OK, let's say the above is true. I cut out quite a bit of Thor information but it reeks to me of trying to put a positive spin on a project they have reservations about. The "mystery source" was overly diplomatic and enthusiastic about the project and that set off alarms in my head. But let's say things are as rosy as he says. We get several breaks from this:
*Townsend left the project due to his diva attitude. That won't make him any new fans in Hollywood.
*A Thor teaser trailer should be hitting at Comic Con.
* John Krasinski's screen tests are going poorly.
*Hulk is likely to be the villain in the Avengers movie.
*The casting for the Hulk is up in the air.
Is this legit? I'm hesitant to dive in and say, "Yes." A lot of the information is already out in some shape or form. With the few tidbits that the "mystery source" drops, they are general enough to sound solid. Plus, certain segments read like a press release, hyping the movie. What do YOU think?
I could have sworn he directed before. But a quick check on IMDB says otherwise. After many, many years in the industry, Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut is just now coming up! Screen Daily is reporting that Hoffman will direct Quartet for BBC Films, with Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay and Albert Finney in the lead roles. The BBC Films angle makes it possible that the movie will only show up on television, but Hoffman's directorial debut may be enough of a lure to get people into theaters as well. The story is about four retired opera singers living in a retirement home and planning a concert for Verdi's birthday. Hoffman likely won't be playing a role in the film, and Ronald Harwood, who won an Oscar for The Pianist, is writing the screenplay.
And on the other side of the tracks, though it had been a little over eight years when Mel Gibson finally made his return to acting in Edge of Darkness, it's only been half that time since he last directed a feature, Apocalypto. Next up for him is another epic, set in time of the Vikings, being written by William Monahan (who also wrote Kingdom of Heaven, Edge of Darkness, and The Departed) and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. And now Hero Complex is reporting that this yet-to-be-titled Viking project may very well be Gibson's last film as a director. Gibson recently reflected on the meeting as a special moment for him, a chance to get underway with a project that started as a daydream during his youth. "It was the first movie I ever thought about making," Gibson said. "I saw it in my mind back when I was teenager. Seriously, it's the first movie I wanted to make. And I think it will be the last film I direct. It's the thing I have been going toward, in a way, since I was young, and I think when it's done I may be finished."
With some people, it's hard to separate their personal life with their professional persona. Gibson has been solid with his directorial selections and if this Viking project comes together, I'm betting it will be a smash. But I am curious how DiCaprio will fit into a Viking environment. Prince Valiant?
Here's a cool "First Look" presentation for Robert Rodriguez's Predators. I was already looking forward to this, but after watching this little featurette, it has zoomed to the top. What do you think?
Robert Zemeckis's ImageMovers Digital studio is no more. According to The L.A. Times Disney announced it would shut down the motion-capture studio and lay off close to 450 workers. ImageMovers is most known for such digital productions as A Christmas Carol, The Polar Express, and Beowulf. Not surprisingly, two out of these three movie are the prime examples of the Uncanny Valley phenomenon. ImageMovers Digital has one more production, Mars Needs Moms, in the pipeline, and Disney will adhere to its 2011 release date. Additionally, Zemeckis is creating a 3-D version of the Beatles' Yellow Submarine. Disney has said they will keep a production deal alive with Zemeckis, but his studio and its employees are kaput. Disney exec's weren't kidding when they said they would be making cuts all over.
My best memory of Zemeckis is working with him on the movie Contact. As an extra. Actually, it was cool watching him work, since where I was stationed, I had a perfect angle of watching him direct. Don't be surprised to see ImageMovers pop up somewhere else. While I don't have information about Mars Needs Moms, I am interested in the Yellow Submarine. The digital technique ImageMovers uses would be ideal to update the abstract world of Submarine. I hope some sort of deal can be made to keep it in Zemeckis's playground, but time will tell.
ComingSoon.net had a first look at the Pixar short that will play in front of Toy Story 3 theaters on June 18th. The short, titled Day & Night, was directed by Teddy Newton and is described as follows:
When Day, a sunny fellow, encounters Night, a stranger of distinctly darker moods, sparks fly! Day and Night are frightened and suspicious of each other at first, and quickly get off on the wrong foot. But as they discover each other's unique qualities--and come to realize that each of them offers a different window onto the same world--the friendship helps both to gain a new perspective.
I'm sold!
If you read my stuff, you know that the Hollywood 5 & 1 is the place to go for cheesecake. I try and keep the line distinct between the vibe the 5 & 1 has and the more news oriented Bulletin here. BUT this was too good to pass up and I'm sure some of you fanboys will appreciate it. AND to give it a news spin, is Denise Milani in the running to play Wonder Woman? Watch this and tell me what you think!
Yeah, that's a limp angle to follow, but I don't think I'll get many complaints about this.
Quick Bits.....Director David Gordon Green spoke about Your Highness at SXSW. According to Greene, it's not the parody-like comedy assumed it would beHoly Grail, they thought it was a spoof. We didn't make a spoof. We made an adventure, a medieval, early 80s adventure, sword and sorcery film. So it was not Lord of the Rings. When you reference Krull to an actor, they don't really…Beastmaster they're not really…you know." Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman, and Zooey Deschanel are about to star in a movie that's basically Krull…with puppets. Without a script. That's right, it's ALL improv. I'm excited for this..........Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass isn't going to be in theaters for over a month but with all the buzz it's no surprise a Kick-Ass 2 is already underway. "Last night at the Q 'n' A (at SXSW), someone asked Johnny (Romita Jr.) if they're going to have some stuff from Kick-Ass 2 at Comic-Con and they said, 'Yes,' which means they're going to get started on it, which is exciting,"..........Is Edward Norton coming back to the Incredible Hulk? Has he even spoke to Marvel? "Yeah, to some degree, through my agents," he said in an interview, "But there's always been an agenda I think to unspool a lot of the Marvel Universe and then come back...I think they've got a lot of new stuff that they're rolling out and then I think at some point they're going to figure out how they want to get around to Avengers....The main guy I had a beef with there left anyways, as always happens. As David Mamet said, 'Just wait 'em out cause they'll be gone, and you'll still be there.'"..........
Looks like I'll be saving some money this week! I don't have to do a write up for Twilight: New Moon since you either love it or hate it. 2 guesses what I think. For the little ones you have Princess and the Frog and for the ladies you have Did You Hear About the Morgans. Did you see Astro Boy? Is it a buy or ignore?
Wait. Here's something for me! Ninja Assasin! Oh, and look at this! Armored! And I didn't catch this in the theater but it looked interesting; The Fourth Kind.

It sounds like the 'mystery source' got the guy laid or something in return for hyping an article that had no discernible probative value.

I don't want to see Hulk as a bad guy. It's not needed. There are way too many good villians they could use.

What is the deal with Latino Review? It seems whenever there's a superhero-movie rumor, it starts there. Do they actually have connections, or do they just throw out random rumors and hope 1% of them stick so they can claim to be legitimate?

I saw Astro Boy at the theaters, and found myself loving it. Screw the critics, that movie was one of the best films I saw all last year. The animation was amazing, the vocal performances were superb, and the story really grabbed me. I'm buying the Blu-Ray this week for sure.

Wait, your mystery source said Thor will not be 'light like the Tim Burton Batman movies'?
