Two Tivos To Paradise 04.02.10: Your CNN Approved Source for TV News!
Posted by Al Norton on 04.02.2010

Hello Friends. The big news in TTTP land this week was that yours truly got interviewed for a CNN.com piece about the Law and Order: Criminal Intent season premiere, and in particular my thoughts on if USA had made a smart decision in making such dramatic cast changes. I was the person most quoted in the piece and it gave props to both TTTP and 411mania.com. Big time, baby!

In non-TV news, I am very excited about going to Fenway Sunday night for the season opener against the Yankees. I'd be more excited it if was during the day - which is why they call it Opening DAY - but I understand that ESPN pays MLB quite a bit and they get to pick their favorites from the schedule.

I can't remember if I ran the Happy Town trailer before but with the show's premiere on the horizon I thought it made sense run it (again).

Anyone who lives in and around Las Vegas should check out the annual NAB Show, which kicks off next Saturday at the Las Vegas Convention Center and has a heavy TV component. NAB Show is the largest electronic media conference in the world, with over 85,000 expected to attend. And it's open to the public!!! The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons is receiving The Television Chairman's Award, and other guest speakers include Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner, Michael J Fox (who is receiving the Distinguished Service Award), Stephen J Hawking (via satellite), and the legendary Stan Lee. Go to www.nabshow.com for all the details, including cost and registration details.

Quick interview update: my chat with How to Make it in America's Bryan Greenburg will be up tomorrow, and next Saturday you can read my one-on-one with Breaking Bad's Anna Gunn.

Insert "become a fan of TTTP on Facebook" comment here.

On the first part of the journey I was looking at all the news.

THIS JUST IN
Right as TTTP was going to press People magazine was reporting that Charlie Sheen had told producers he did not want to return for a new season of Two and a Half Men in the fall. His contract is up after this spring and the network has already renewed the show through the 2011-2012 season, so some think this may be a negotiating tactic, while others think he wants to leave to focus on getting his life in order. Were he to actually leave the show it would leave CBS in the position of having to replace Sheen with a big name actor playing a different character - the audience wouldn't accept someone else in his role - and hope that it worked despite all TV history evidence to the contrary. Two and a Half Men is the most watched comedy on TV right now, and Sheen the top paid comedic actor in the industry. More on this big story next week.

It Was A Slow Day And The Sun Was Beating Down On The Soldiers On The Side Of The Road
As we approach the time of the year where network executives make decisions about which shows will return in the fall I thought I'd put together a list of the bubble shows from each of the big four networks and see which you readers thought should come back. Any series that has either been renewed or cancelled already, or where the renewal is a formality, will not be listed below.

ABC
Better Off Ted
FlashForward
The Forgotten
Shark Tank
V

CBS
Accidentally on Purpose
Cold Case
Gary Unmarried
Medium
New Adventures of Old Christine
Numb3rs
Rules of Engagement

The CW
Fly Girls
High Society
Life Unexpected
Melrose Place
One Tree Hill

FOX
Human Target
Lie To Me
Sons of Tucson

NBC
Chuck
The Marriage Ref
Mercy
Parenthood
Who Do You Think You Are?

If I were to pick a top five "Shows I Think Deserve Another Season" they would be, in no particular order, Life Unexpected, Chuck, Parenthood, Shark Tank, and Medium. I'd say Better Off Ted but the truth is it probably shouldn't be on this list as there is really no chance it returns. A month or so ago it seemed Chuck wouldn't be on the bubble but consecutive weeks of record low demos put it firmly back on the fence.

This is your chance for your voice to be heard; use the comments section below to give your list of shows that you want to see saved. I know there are least a couple of people who work at the networks who have been known to read the column so if you make your case strong – and loud – enough, who knows what might happen.

Got To Know How To Pony Like Bony Maroni, Mash Potato, Do The Alligator
Big changes are in store for the upcoming season of Fox's So You Think You Can Dance?, which premieres on May 27th. The dance competition's 7th cycle will feature 10 finalists, half the amount of previous seasons, and they will partner with finalists from seasons past as opposed to each other. In addition, partners will be chosen at random each week, and the contestants will perform in style their partners specialize in. Other changes include Mia Michaels returning both as a judge and a choreographer, and Mary Murphy will do some choreography to her duties as well. Accurate barometer

Ratings for the show are down over the last two years and while some of that stems from Fox's decision to run back-to-back seasons, I can see why they decided to tinker with the format a little. I especially like them bringing back dancers from seasons past as it gives fans a reason to keep watching even if their favorite contestants are voted off.

I am not a regular SYTYCD viewer but Mrs. TiVo is and anytime I find myself watching over her proverbial shoulder I am in awe of the physical strength and personal discipline of the competitors. Dancing is a fantastic form of artistic expression and anything that leads to more people being turned on to it is more than ok in my book.

Every Night I'm Lyin' In Bed, Holdin' You Close In My Dreams
This year's winners of the highly prestigious Peabody Awards were announced on Wednesday, with many TTTP favorites among the honorees. Here is a partial list:

The # 1 Ladies Detective Agency (HBO)
60 Minutes (CBS)
American Masters (PBS)
Brick City (Sundance)
Frontline (PBS)
Glee (Fox)
In Treatment (HBO)
The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (CBS)
Modern Family (ABC)
Thrilla in Manila (HBO)

The Peabody Awards are pretty much the highest honor there is in TV and I love the above list, with many of these shows having appeared on my 2009 year's best list as well as being singled out for raves in various columns. Yes, essentially I am including this news item as a way of saying, to paraphrase Jules Winnfield, "check out the great taste on Al." The only thing I am surprised about is the absence of ESPN's 30 for 30 series but I am thinking maybe they are waiting until the series is complete .

And If You've Made It Right You'll Know It, It's Not Like Anything You've Ever Made Before
Over the last few weeks I've received quite a few press releases from cable networks about their upcoming programming so I thought I'd give you some of the highlight, bullet point style…

*Independent Lens (April, PBS); the acclaimed documentary series airs four TV premieres throughout the month including Unmistaken Child (search for a reincarnated Tibetan master and look at Buddhist culture and beliefs), The Buddha (story of a Buddhist who parachuted into Nazi-occupied Europe in an attempt to save the Jews of Hungary), and Garbage Dreams (three teenagers who are born into Egypt's trash collecting industry).

*American Experience (PBS); My Lai (4/27) examines the tragedy that took place in Viet Nam when American soldiers massacred 300 civilians, and the following Monday Roads To Memphis looks at traces the paths of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his assassin, James Earl Ray, and how they led to Memphis in April of 1968.

*Expedition Wild (NatGeoWild, 4/5); reality series with Casey Anderson and his 900 pound grizzly bear

*Explorer: Solitary Confinement & Detroit Gang Squad (NatGeo, 4/11); airing as a block from 9 – 11, these two new reality series document the lives of the over 750 prisoners who living in solitary at CPS, a supermax prison, and give up an inside look at undercover cops trying to infiltrate the gangs of inner city Detroit.

*9 By Design (Bravo, 4/13); reality series that follows a husband and wife NYC design team as they juggle work life and raising 7 children.

*Gravity (Starz, 4/23); very dark comedy about a group of people who attend the same out-patient program for suicide attempt survivors. It stars Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad), Ving Rhames, Ivan Sergei, Rachel Hunter, and series co-creator Eric Schaeffer. Schaeffer previously created the TTTP favorite Starved as well as several other shows, and wrote the fantastic book, I Can't Believe I'm Still Single.

*Into The Deep: America, Whaling, and the World (PBS, 5/10); two hour documentary on the history of American whaling and the ways it effected the world that you may not have known about.

*When Families Grieve (PBS, 5/14); hour long special produced by Sesame Productions where Katie Couric and the Sesame Street Muppets talk about how to help children deal with the death of a parent.

*You're Wearing That?! (WE TV, 5/14); makeover show where mothers and daughters get to change what they don't like about the other's style.

*The Fabulous Beekman Boys (Planet Green, 6/16); a bit like a real life version of Green Acres. Two men, one a former big time executive with Martha Stewart and the other a drag queen turned successful advertising agent and NY Times bestselling author, move to a farm in upstate New York to try their hands at running an organic farm and living a green lifestyle.

*IFC has given first season pick up's to The Increasingly Bad Decisions of Todd Margaret (David Cross stars a pathological liar who ends up running his company's London office) and Onion News Network (a magazine show spoof from the writer's of The Onion) and also acquired the US rights to The Kids In The Hall: Death Comes To Town, featuring the comedy troupe reuniting for a new comedy/mystery series.

*WE will premiere Mother Knows Best later this year, a new reality series where Joan Rivers moves from NY to LA and in with her daughter Melissa and her grandson. Also from WE comes Downsized, a reality show about a 9 member family struggling to make ends meet in this economy. Most promising is Sunset Daze (4/28), a reality show set in an Arizona retirement community. In development at the network are Wayne's World (a reality series about all the women who run Wayne Newton's life, both on and off stage) and Staten Island Cakes (yes, a show about a family that runs a cake store).

Like A Coin In Your Mint, I Am Dented And Spent With High Treason
With news about casting for pilot season running wild (whatcha gonna do…) I thought I'd break it out of the News and Notes section to give it a proper spotlight….

*Jamie Foxx and former In Living Color writers (and MadTV creators) Fax Bahr and Adam Small are re-teaming up for a sketch comedy pilot for Fox.

*Fox is working on a pilot for My Parents Are Going To Love You, a new reality show where people prank their parents by bringing home a celebrity as their fiancé. Hijinx ensue when said celebrity acts like an incredible ass. Comedy.

*Don Johnson is in talks to star in the ABC comedy pilot Southern Discomfort as a tough-as-nails Texan whose life goes haywire when his adult kids move back in with him. Mary Steenburgen is already attached.

*The CBS comedy pilot True Love is fast becoming one to watch, with Tyler Labine (Sons of Tucson, Reaper) signing on this week to join Jason Biggs and Minka Kelly in the cast.

*Martin Short and TTTP fave Orlando Jordan have joined the cast of Ron Howard's Fox comedy pilot Tax Man.

*The great Terry Kinney, last seen on The Mentalist, is a part of the Dylan Walsh fronted ATF drama The Line for CBS.

*Part of David Zabel's (ER) two year deal with ABC Studios was him taking over as executive producer of their drama pilot 187 Detroit, a look at homicide detectives in the motor city through the eyes of a faux documentary. Michael Imperioli is one of the stars.

*Teri Polo nabbed one of the leads in the TBS comedy Glory Daze.

*Ryan Hansen (Party Down, Veronica Mars) will star opposite Danieel Harris (One Tree Hill) in NBC's comedy pilot Friends with Benefits.

But You Were Up To Your Old Tricks In Chapters Four Five And Six
All you need to know about the Nielsen's for the past seven days…

THURSDAY
FlashForward hit a series low in demos and put up overall lousy numbers for the second week in a row, moving the show closer and closer to "off the bubble" status, and not in a good way…Grey's Anatomy was the top rated scripted show of the night in totals and demos, although the demos represented a series low…CBS coverage of the NCAA basketball tournament topped the night in totals and demos, up from the week before…The Vampire Diaries returned to match its last new episode while Supernatural was up a bit…Marriage Ref fell 14% in the demos after last week's spike…The Office demo numbers were a season low, perhaps the residual effect from the previous week's horrendous outing…

FRIDAY
Surprisingly, Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution did better on Friday night than it did last Sunday with a Desperate Housewives lead-in. With a rerun of that episode as a lead-in, the new outing at 9:00 pm was up 17% and topped Kitchen Nightmares in totals and demos…CBS coverage of the NCAA tournament won the night with 10.5 million viewers…Spartacus: Blood and Sand hit a series high, up 14% from the previous week. Despite mediocre – at best – reviews, this Starz original series is a hit for them and has more than justified the network's risk of ordering two full seasons at the start…

SUNDAY
Amish Grace was the most watched original movie in Lifetime Movie Network history…If it's Sunday that means Undercover Boss is dominating in both totals and demos, up 11% in the latter from last week…Both Minute to Win It and The Celebrity Apprentice were up in the demos…Sons of Tucson was up 5% in the demos, although it was also far and away the worst demo producer of the night for Fox…Amazing Race easily won the 8:00 hour in demos and totals while Cold Case continued to lose huge chunks of its Undercover Boss lead-in…

MONDAY
Castle set a series high for the second week in a row, up 12% from last Monday despite its lead-in being down 11%...That lead-in was Dancing with the Stars, who had the drop from their own record high but still posted an impressive 23 million viewers, more than enough to easily top the night and also win in demos…Chuck recovered from consecutive weeks of series lows in the demos to jump 11%...Life Unexpected continued to flourish in the 8:00 hour, topping lead-out Gossip Girl in totals and finishing in a virtual dead heat in demos. These last two weeks should go a long way towards getting the show a second season…

TUESDAY
Justified dropped 34% from week two…21.8 million tuned in for R & B night on American IdolLost was up a bit in the demos – second overall in the night in that category and had a bit over 10 million in total viewers…Dancing with the Stars 14.3 million represented an increase from the first results episode last season…The Biggest Loser tied a season low in demos…

WEDNESDAY
20 million people saw Didi exit American Idol...Modern Family was up 3% in the demos while the rest of ABC's line up was down. Ok, Cougar Town was even with last week while The Middle (24%) and Ugly Betty (13%) dropped big time...A Minute to Win It rerun was up 38% in the demos from Mercy's numbers in that same time slot last week...The CW's High Society put up some of the lowest prime time numbers of the season for any show on the big 4...

All The Young Dudes, Carry The News
Industry News, Notes, and Hot Rumors…EW.com is reporting that Matt Damon will guest on 30 Rock during May sweeps. As someone who remembers how great he was on Will & Grace, I am very much looking forward to that…The record ratings high for Castle mentioned above helped ABC decide to pick up a 22 episode third season of the show…Fox confirmed what everyone knew already, that this season of 24 would be its last. The series finale will be a two hour episode on May 24th, and a big screen version of the show could hit theaters as soon as summer 2011…AMC gave a six episode first season order to Walking Dead, an adaptation of the popular graphic novel series that will be written, produced, and directed by multi Oscar nominee Frank Darabont…Alyssa Milano's new ABC comedy Romantically Challenged will premiere on Monday, April 12th following Dancing with the Stars…S. Epatha Merkerson, who has been with Law and Order since 1993, will not return for the show's record breaking 21st season in the fall. She went to the producers recently to ask for her release and to make sure the writers had time to craft a proper exit for Lt. Van Buren. While the show has not been given an official pick up yet it's considered a forgone conclusion that the show will be in NBC's line up in the fall...The 83rd annual Academy Awards will air on ABC on February 27, 2011…Eric Balfour and Lucas Bryant have been added to the cast of Syfy's Haven, based on the Stephen King novella The Colorado Kid. The new series is set to debut on July 9th… Glee's return on April 13th will be at a special time, running from 9:28 to 10:30, so don't forget to program your Tivos to start early…Scoundrels, scheduled to run this summer on ABC, was just a few days into filming when David James Elliot replaced Neal McDonough as the male lead. The series follows a mother (Virginia Madsen) trying to get her family out of a life of crime after her husband (Elliot) goes to jail…Lorraine Bracco will guest on Law and Order: CI later this season…Huge Disney star Demi Lovano has booked at room at Seattle Grace, appearing as a patient on a May sweeps episode of Grey's Anatomy…Season two of Travel's Dhani Tackles the Globe premiers April 19th…WE picked up the rights to Charmed and will show reruns nightly from 5 – 7 pm starting in late June…Justin Timberlake and Jamie Foxx will co-star in a series ads for the NBA postseason on TNT that will run in movie theaters…A couple of weeks ago I mentioned how Nigel Lythgoe would receive the Philanthropy Award at the upcoming 31st Annual College Television Awards, once again hosted by Tom Bergeron, and this week the list of presenters was released, including Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Ty Burrell (Modern Family), Busy Phillips (Cougar Town), Jon Tenney (The Closer), Gillian Jacobs (Community, Mad Men), Peter Facinelli (Twilight), Chris Colfer (Glee), Kelly Osbourne, and Kerr Smith (Life Unexpected)…Monica Breen and Alison Schapker's first post-Brothers & Sisters executive producing gig will be on Fringe, where they will be reunited with J.J. Abrams, who they worked with before on Alias and Lost…Hosting SNL in April will be Tina Fey (with musical guestJustin Bieber, 4/10), Ryan Phillippe (Ke$ha, 4/17), and Gabourey Sidibe (MGMT, 4.24)...

Turns Out Not Where But Who You're With That Really Matters
The top thing I watched since the last column went to press AKA The Best Of What's Around…Let's cut to the chase; Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution is not only the best reality series currently on TV but it's the best since FX's 30 Days, and anyone who bemoans the genre's lack of quality options needs to put their money where their blog is and get behind a show that is actually trying to do some good.

I was so unsold on JOFR that I didn't even bother to TiVo the preview episode that ran after Desperate Housewives, choosing to tape the re-airing last Friday along with the new episode that ran after and figured I'd give it a few minutes and if I didn't like it I could at least enjoy the high of creating room for two more show in my Now Playing folder. It took less than 10 minutes to see what I was watching was quite different than anything else currently on TV; a show that documents Oliver's attempt to get a town in America – and not just any town but the single unhealthiest town in the country – to change their eating habits for the better.

We live in a country where we all love to give our opinions about things – hell, I am a guy who writes a column where he tells the world what he thinks about TV – but the truth is we are a nation that would rather look out a window than in a mirror, so o one level it's no surprise that the townsfolk did not take kindly to Oliver pointing out the error of their culinary ways. What is surprising is that they didn't get over it and take this as a huge opportunity to teach their kids about healthy eating. I mean, we are only two weeks in but things are not looking so good.

A show that actually looks to teach its audience something is hard to pull off, let alone one that is entertaining at the same time, but JOFR does it without sacrificing real life for drama. And with a sense of humor, too. I was thrilled to learn ratings for last Friday were up and urge all of you to check it out. I am not saying a reality show like this makes up for Jersey Shore but it's a start.

People Say I'm Crazy Doing What I'm Doing. Well, They Give Me All Kinds Of Warnings To Save Me From Ruin
What's flashed before my eyes the last seven days...The Office recovered from the awful sales people vs. office staff episode with a pretty funny outing at a local bar. While Michael Scott being a buffoon is a bit old now, Date Mike – nice to meet me – was pretty funny, and it's always interesting to see people being charmed by him when he's not trying. I also enjoy seeing Dwight's success with a more normal woman than Angela – it makes the character a bit more real…"How are you still single? There are so many men in New York who like being yelled at and poisoned" was my favorite line from the last week, with accidentally drunk Floyd summing up much of Liz's romantic woes on 30 Rock…Sara Gilbert and Richard T Jones guest work on Grey's Anatomy last week gave the show some serious emotional punch. Kevin McKidd continues to do excellent work, and the helicopter showing up moments after he lets go of the wound gave the audience a real look into what haunts him…Lost is really starting to build towards the inevitable gang war (the Jacobs vs. the Smoke Monsters) that will highlight the series finale. Jin seeing pictures of his daughter for the first time was one of the emotional highlights of my TV viewing week…Each week I talk about how Parenthood seems to get better with every new episode and there will be no change today, with the writing finally seeming to fully match the talents of the cast. I wasn't so crazy about Peter Krause in the pilot but he has really found his stride, easily topping anything he did in Dirty Sexy Money…I was not happy to deliver the news about Justified's falling ratings above as I am really loving the show. Lots of shooting, but they make it seem like a perfectly normal part of their universe. Loved the introduction of the hopefully recurring Pinter character this week…Modern Family and Cougar Town are as good a comedy pairing as anything not on NBC on Thursdays. The GleeModern Family showdown for this summer's Best Comedy Series Emmy will be one for the ages…This is the single worst group of American Idol finalists in the three years I have been watching the show, and I blame Ellen. No really, I do. I think when they were picking the final 24 she was the swing vote on many of the cute and/or quirky singers in the group, pulling them away from traditionally strong vocalists, and it shows in the performances these past few weeks. Can we just eliminate Aaron, Andrew, Tim, and Katie right now and then give the remaining finalists a better showcase for their talents? If not, that's the order those four should go home in. I think the final four will be Mike, Crystal, Siobhan, and Lee, with Casey James looking in from the outside…The last five minutes of Breaking Bad were so deliciously tense it was amazing; who'd have thought that a guy in a towel walking into an empty room could be so nerve racking to the audience. Great to see Bob Odenkirk back; Saul was clearly written for him, whether Vince Gilligan knew it at the time or not…I am not sure there is a drama set in reality that does a better job at juggling multiple plot lines than this season of Damages, always doubling back and picking up random threads from weeks gone by and reminding you there is method to their madness. Best season in the show's three year history, by far…

TV Pick Of The Week
Baseball season! Far and away my favorite sport, I wait for Opening Day like a little kid, excited and invigorated by the real feeling of spring that goes with it. I've been lucky enough to attend Opening Day at Fenway Park the last 15 years or so, and as I mentioned in the opening, this year will be no different. What is different is that all of you will be able to (virtually) join me as ESPN has chosen the game for their Sunday night telecast, with the first pitch of the MLB regular season scheduled for about 8:05 pm. It's the start of baseball, and it's Red Sox - Yankees...what else could you ask for?

Don't miss Sunday night's Red Sox - Yankees MLB opener on ESPN.

Hope You Need My Love, Babe, Just Like I Need You
Here is some other noteworthy programming of the next seven days…

*CBS new Jerry Bruckheimer produced drama Miami Medical premieres tonight at 10 pm. I have seen the first two episodes and can safely say that if knowing a show is produced by JB seems like a draw to you than you will probably enjoy it, while the rest of us will wish Jeremy Northem had found a better vehicle to make his American TV debut in. The whole point of setting a show in a hospital is the variety of stories you can tell, so focusing a unit that only deals with life or death situations almost takes away the tension that scenario mixed in with others would bring.

*ABC's annual Easter weekend airing of The 10 Commandments beings Saturday at 7 pm.

*Season three of Sunday Best – a gospel spin on American Idol – kicks off Sunday at 8 pm on BET.

*Part one of a Best of Season Five two part episode of Deadliest Catch premieres Sunday at 10 pm on Discovery.

*HBO's How to Make It In America wraps up its first season Sunday at 10 pm.

*Versus debuts their first daily talk show when The Daily Line airs Monday at 6 pm.

*Apparently running out of BFF's in the states, Paris Hilton has headed across the pond for Paris Hilton's British Best Friend, which premieres Tuesday at 10 pm on the TVGuide Network.

*Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood is actually beginning its FIFTH season Monday at 10 pm on Oxygen, where it owns multiple network ratings records.

*I am hoping Tuesday's Southland (10 pm, TNT) is a season finale and not a series finale. I know the ratings haven't been fantastic but this is too good a show to die a second early death.

*Wednesday's Criminal Minds (9 pm, CBS) introduces viewers to Oscar winner Forrest Whittaker and his team of trackers, who will be populating an as yet untitled spin off series in the fall.

*The season finale of Shear Genius (Wednesday, 10 pm, Bravo) is followed by the season two premiere of Top Chef: Masters (11 pm).

*Coverage of The Masters – is there something bigger than usual about it this year? – begins Thursday at 4 pm on ESPN.

*Bones celebrates hitting the 100th episode milestone with a flashback to the first time Bones and Booth worked together. Yes, that means that Zack will be on the show!

I want Chuck back if the writers feel they have more story to tell. I don't understand the low demos as of late because this season is really starting to pick up after (imo) a questionable beginning. Chuck still has its charm and great story telling, if the writers think they have it in them then I say bring it on. Otherwise, get Sarah and Chuck together and call it a day

Two shows I watch from the "bubble list" are Parenthood and the best show on TV, Chuck... Parenthood has a super cast and the writing is getting more into story mode as opposed to "meet the characters" mode necessary in the begining of a show, especially in a show with a cast this big. I like the direction this is taking and would like to see more.

Chuck on the other hand is just a superb show... Zack Levy is great in his role, which has seen Chuck mature as the show has gone on, and he has handled it somewhat realisticly. Yvonne Strahovski is the most beautiful woman on TV. The chemistry she and Chuck has just flies off the screen, and even when their characters are with other people, the glances they give each other say alot with out them speaking. As for the other characters, Adam Baldwin is plain genius as Casey. Joshua Gomez's Morgan is a great side kick. The song stylings of Jeffster is top notch entertainment... I read they were going to do a video, and I can't wait.

The ratings may not be what the networks want, but last years Subway deal proves that the show has a great fan base. It'd be a real shame not to renew this show.

I only care about Chuck.

Of the shows on the bubble list, the 3 that I'd like to save would be Human Target, V and FlashForward. FlashForward being canceled wouldn't really shock me at all since the ratings keep dipping (same thing happened to Invasion, the long hiatus ended up killing it when it was actually getting good). If I could pick only one show to keep, it'd be Human Target. That's one of the shows I look forward to every week and I think the cast meshes very well together.

Chuck, Human Target, and Better Off Ted. Anything else I don't watch anyway, so I wouldn't care if they came back or not.

Of the shows on the list, Chuck and Rules of Engagement should be saved. I'm not sure how Rules can be on the bubble, as didn't it JUST start it's new season? I thought it was doing pretty good in the ratings too.

All three of those shows you listed for IFC sounded awesome. Please update us on them when they are coming around to airing because it sounds like fun quirky TV.

And a couple of opinions... I think this season of Chuck has struggled. The last maybe 4 episodes have been good but the first few episodes weren't very good. There's been almost NOTHING at the Buy More. I realize that this is only a small part of the show, mind you, but it was a big part of the show's original charm. Chuck being a regular guy and a spy. Ever since Chuck has become just a spy, the show has suffered and I'm not surprised that the ratings have suffered as well.

The show used to have two story arcs most episodes, one as a spy and one at the Buy More. The Buy More stuff added in lots of cool characters like Jeff and Lester and this season without it, it's been all heavy handed drama. Plus Chuck is asuper badass this year, more or less negating a point to Casey and Sarah.

That said I still like the show and the last few episodes have been great drama... But the show is supposed to be a mix of drama and comedy, which it's really not anymore.

Also, on Justified... I love the show. I really do. But there needs to be more going on. Most FX shows have a major storyline going on. Justified doesn't. There might be a major story arc coming together, but it doesn't feel like it each week. Which makes people less inclined to continue watching. It's more or less a cop show right now. If they could find a hook storyline that is recurring, then we'd be on to something. Right now we're getting too little and I think audiences are having trouble connecting.

I'll agree about Human Target. Each week, the reparte between Chi McBride and Jackie Earle Haley is outstanding! The fact that Haley plays Guerrero with such non-chalance is what makes it fabulous. I'd also save V as well. Having been a fan of the original, I loved the moment when they teased eating the mouse from the trap. I did think that Anna was a tad over the top with the CGI.

I'm a huge Chuck fan, and I would love to seem them come back. I don't think the world of Chuck is done.
I also kinda like Human Target, but I'm not holding my breath.

Do we really have to go through this again like last year...Chuck needs to come back for a fourth season. Seriously, without Jay Leno on at 10, NBC should have more than enough spots open to keep it.

Parenthood has really turned out to be a good show and I want to see it back. I recorded the pilot because I like Lauren Graham and it has really delivered. The big cast is helping them avoid the "two parents and their 2.3 kids tackle this week's issue" mold which really helps give some originality.

Mercy was shaky at first in that it looked like it would be another hospital orgy like E.R. had devolved into. While it still has moments of that, the character development has been well done. I look forward to each episode for reasons beyond seeing the gorgeous Michelle Trachtenberg, who was the reason I first watched.

Life Unexpected has been well done and should also come back. I've been a huge Shiri Appleby mark ever since her work on Roswell (I can't believe that was a decade ago). I just wish her character was more like the virtuous Liz Parker. Simultaneous "girl can't choose between two guys so strings both along" story arcs are really starting to put me off though. If the main females both pick the bad guys I won't want to watch any more.

Shows to save: Chuck and Chuck and Chuck.
very simple. Would do better on different night, maybe Sundays - Even Friday I think would pull more viewers as the fans of the show are very loyal and will follow it.

Couldn't agree more with your views on Jamie Oliver's Food Project. Watched it and I couldn't believe that the kids didn't know what a tomato was and they choose to eat the chicken paste because it was circle and fried. Sad thing is I wasn't surprised either. Wish this show would be given a chance, but we would rather watch a bunch of drunk morons doing each other on the shore than something that is entertaining and educational. Idioracy may become a true story sooner than later.

I noticed that Heroes wasn't on your bubble list. Has it been officially renewed, or cancelled? Anybody know?

Life Unexpected is sooooo good! It's the only CW show I watch and I hope it comes back--I was hooked from the second episode on.

It's obvious to me ABC wanted badly to keep Lost's loyal viewing base, but have some misplaced ideas about why people love lost so much. Just putting a former Lost cast member in a show will probably get at least a watch from most viewers. FF has a cool premise, and remaking V isn't such a bad idea, but people love Lost because of the character development as much as the overall mystery. It seems like Happy Town will get the 3rd shot, and anything that returns Mr. Friendly to my TV will get a strong shot at gaining my viewership.

I'd save V and Human Target, my fiancee would save One Tree Hill and Parenthood, and we'd both save Life Unexpected and Mercy.

Chuck is the only show I'm gunning for. Ratings never tell the whole story. Chuck is the first show since House that I wanted to find and rent every episode starting with the pilot. I discovered this show only weeks ago. It says a great deal about the networks' inability to increase viewer-ship lately. The powers that be need to be beating the streets selling their product like every other industry does. The days of people sitting down in their living rooms at prime-time are over. You need to give potential viewers a sample and a reason to come buy your product. Not whittle down the quality every chance you get.

Time to search out your audience. Show them what you sell. It's like having an electronics store and displaying all of your goods on the loading dock. Put it out there.

Chuck, among many other shows, has suffered from this from day one, I'm sure I heard about the show in passing... a few times. But nothing about the show's advertising told me that I would be interested. I'm not saying I know the answer to all this, but someone getting paid to come up with solutions needs to start doing their job.
