Ten Deep 7.08.10: Top Ten Unexpected Tearjerkers
Posted by Mike Gorman on 07.08.2010

" The Top Ten Unexpected Tearjerkers"

Last weekend I had some free time and wanted to escape the heat, so I decided to go grab a tub of popcorn and find some eye candy at the local movie theater. I usually am drawn towards darker fare but I had heard good things about an animated sequel. That's right, I saw…

I figured, what could it hurt to catch up on one of Disney's juggernaut franchises? I settled into my seat expecting to see some great animation and maybe a well developed albeit wholesome story. Little did I know I would be seeing one of the most suspenseful and emotionally challenging films to be released this summer. Don't get me wrong, it was a great film but I clearly was not prepared for what came towards the end. I will not get into spoilers here because I would rather encourage you to see it for yourself. What I can say is that by the time the credits were rolling I needed to use one of my butter drenched napkins from my popcorn, to dry my eyes. Was my reaction unique? Had I just been having a rough day? I found validation later in the week when director Kevin Smith tweeted, "Me and the kid went to TOY STORY 3 today, aka SCHINDLER'S TOYBOX. Jesus Christ, I haven't cried that much since my Dad died. A+ #PixarPwns."

On that afternoon, I felt like the victim of a bait and switch, drawn in by the promise of whimsical 3-D animation and sucker punched with an emotional rollercoaster ride. It got me thinking about other times I had fallen victim to this phenomenon. After a trip down memory lane and several discussions with friends and colleagues I realized that the unexpected tearjerker could stand alone as its own genre. There is an important distinction to be made here as the films I am talking about are not movies you go into knowing your heartstrings are going to be tugged at. They are the films that set up for a much different reaction and then pull the carpet out from under you at very specific moments. Here I have listed ten films that caught me off guard and yes, brought out some tears.

10. Wall-E

As I prepared this list I began to see that Disney and Pixar have a long standing history of making tearjerkers. Just look at Bambi, Dumbo and The Lion King. In those films you expect some kind of emotional hit as they deal with growing up and the loss of a parent. Wall-E appeared to be different with its tale of human kind's inflated obesity, out of control consumerism and the little robot left behind to clean up the mess. Little did you know that in that soft spoken robot you'd encounter a deep river of emotion. One that breaks the damn in your tear ducts right around the time he dances in space with Eve. There is a beauty and simplicity to their space waltz. They become bound together and we get set up for a wallop at the film's climax when Wall-E is reset and we may lose him.

9. Cast Away

I expected to be taken on a journey of deep emotion in this tale of a man lost on an island who eventually finds his way home. What I did not expect was to be so upset at the loss of an inanimate object! Wilson becomes like a beloved pet by the time Tom Hanks is able to get his raft to leave the island and perhaps that is why one cannot help but shed a tear when the bloodstained ball floats away in the ocean's strong current.

8. Bridge to Terabithia

Come see the adventures of two kids who build a mystical fantasy land together one summer! Marvel at the special effects! Oh this film promised a lot of things and what it delivered was a punch to the gut. See those two kids above, I won't go into full detail but let's just say that one of them does not survive the summer. This film is a part of a sub-genre of the unexpected tearjerker that also includes the movie My Girl. I call them the "Let's make you think this will be a light hearted film but then kill a kid and point & laugh at the people who came to sit" films. Definitely good times!

7. Red Dawn

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is a fantastic story of what a group of resourceful teenagers accomplish when the US is invaded by Communists. It plays out all kinds of childhood dreams of running away to the hills and battling the forces of evil. The tearjerker moment comes when the teens venture back into their town to find their parents who have been placed into a kind of internment camps. They find their father and he delivers one heck of a speech to inspire them to keep going and seek vengeance for what has been done to him. It is a classic movie moment regardless of how wet your eyes are by the time it is over.

6. Alpha Dog

I think this one could be a bit contentious but I believe it deserves a place on this list. This story based on true events takes a decidedly dark turn towards the end, obviously. It is the story of a drug dealer who takes one of his client's brothers as collateral for a debt. Zach is held as a prisoner of sorts throughout the film but it is more of a fun romp for him; Meeting new people and girls, having fun and seeing the lighter side of these "friends" of his brothers. Reality sets in when he is taken to the desert and sees that his grave has been dug. There is no way out at this point and Anton Yelchin plays the scene to perfection. You can see his heart break as he realizes what is really going on. It is that moment that grabs you.

5. Rudy

With this film you do expect some kind of emotional build up as it is the tale of a man who attempts to live out his dream on the football field at Notre Dame, regardless of how the deck is stacked against him. What is not expected is just how powerful his story would turn out to be. By the time he gets to put that uniform on you are right there beside him living the moment. It is the "everyman" aspect of his tale that makes it so relatable I think. Have some tissues handy for the ending of this one!

4. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Let's cut right to it, Spock sacrifices himself for the rest of the crew of the Enterprise! Bam! I did not see that coming. The moment of his death is powerful indeed but the real waterworks moment is when Kirk delivers his eulogy. Sure by the time we learned the title of the third film in the series we knew he would be back, but still his death had great import and meaning. It definitely stakes out a claim on this list.

3. Across the Universe

The tearjerker moment of this movie ranks so high because it comes completely out of left field in what is overall a pretty mediocre film. If you have not seen it, the film is a musical using the works of the Beatles. The scene that earns the film a spot on this list is the explosive portrayal of war juxtaposed with a young boy singing the song "Let it Be." It is the movies shining gem of a moment, which is beautifully shot and well presented against the power of the song. Music is a very visceral experience in and of itself, so it is no surprise in the end that it can be used to target your emotional center.

2. Deep Impact

Disaster films tend to want to evoke an emotional response but more often than not they fall short which is why I really expected no less from this the lesser run cousin of the asteroid impact films that came out in the late 90s. Most of the attention was paid to Armageddon but Deep Impact turned out to have some great scenes including one involving the crew of the space shuttle which will need to sacrifice itself in order to save the planet. Ron Eldard plays one of those astronauts. He was blinded during an earlier part of the mission and towards the end the crew gets to say goodbye to their families. It seems that Eldard's wife would not make it in time but she does and he gets to say goodbye to her and his child, never seeing them again. As his child reaches out for him and he does the same, your heart breaks. Sure the situation is a bit ludicrous but the emotions ring true.

And lastly…

1. Up

Disney & Pixar rear their ugly heads again on this list! Up's tearjerker moment is unique in that it does not come towards the latter half of the film, instead it is the merely the opening sequence. But do not take it lightly, this five minute or so sequence details the birth and development of an everlasting love. We see it blossom and then witness what happens when nature takes its course, and death steps in. I would state that I think this is probably the best 5-10min of animated film I have ever seen. It is one of the reasons that the movie stood out as one of the best last year.

Here is a clip of Carl and Ellie's life:

Any of these films get to you? Or did I miss the one that gets your eyes a waterin'? Let me know!

The winner is Click. Sold as a comedy, but actually ends up a crazy tearjerker

my fiancee and i rented Up to see what the fuss was about. Holy shit, it got me going in the first 10 minutes, never expected it. Good call

I dunno if you should include Alpha Dog simply because it's a true story. You know going in the Kid gets murdered, because it happened in real life. Not so tear-jearking after all...

Radio Flyer always got me.

Bridge to Terabithia is one bad trip of a movie.

so toy story 3 must be probably the greatest of the trilogy rite?

Posted By: perry (Guest)  on July 07, 2010 at 11:29 PM

Just watched Up for the first time the other day and I couldn't believe the first 10 minutes. Amazing. Definitely deserves to be #1. Oh, and Toy Story 3 should be on here instead of Cast Away, but that's just my opinion.

Here's one that I'll get laughed at for. The Nutty Professor with Eddie Murphey. The part where Sherman Klump takes his date out to a comedy club only to become the victim of Dave Chapelle's vicious hack comedian.

Another one was Cool Runnings where they wreck the sled but carry it across the finish line. Totally pissed me off when I found out that didn't really happen.

My Dog Skip.

Malcolm In The Middle fans went and saw it expecting a fun Frankie Muniz pet film the equivalent of "Wonderdog" but were subject to one of the saddest movies I have ever seen.

I choked up a little during the crow when Brandon Lee is talking about his wife in ernie hudsons apartment.

Taken from someone who's pet golden retriever named Ellie died no more than a month before seeing UP, real men do cry.

Not on film, but for television, I wasn't too sure I was into watching the show SUPERNATURAL. I was actually about to stop after the first season, but decided to continue to season 2. Well season 2 kicks off with some serious tears and great storytelling, but for me it was the end of an episode called HEART. I became a fan after that episode. POWERFUL acting from Jensen Ackles and especially Jared Padalecki. Without revealing anything, let's just say HEART will break your own heart!

I had a harder time with Monsters INC than Toy Story 3 and Up.

I didn't cry, tho. That's for pussies.

I thought Up would be a cute little movie. But damn I was trying to fight off tears in the first 5 mins...such a good movie.

Great column. Up is the perfect choice. I actually agreed with almost every inclusion you have here. Glory and The Green Mile crush me everytime...

Posted By: Eric (Guest)  on July 08, 2010 at 12:42 AM

Fuck Bridge to Tarabithia. It was a well made movie and all, but way too soul crushing for my liking. It's like "oh man! Imagination is fun! Look at this crazy world I thought up! Oh wait I'm dead and now the imagination land is only there to escape your pain. My b."

Even though its not a movie, the Lost finale scene with Kate Charlie and Claire had me leaking from the face a bit.

"I call them the "Let's make you think this will be a light hearted film but then kill a kid and point & laugh at the people who came to sit" films"

I don't know, I'd call it the genre of "good book to movie adaptations". I don't know if that qualifies it as either unexpected (I guess to most, but I studied the book in school) or whatever. But what do I know, You have the column not me.

Click was suprisingly a tearjerker.
For me Treasure Planet the animated film I cried. Probably top 3 of my favourite animated films

Back in the 1980's, there was a movie out of Quebec. the title was translated into 'The Dog Who Stopped The War.'

in typical Canadian style, the movie was a winter based one. the plot centred around two groups of children involved in a snowball war, which was being fueled by the owner of the dog, a St. Bernard, from the title.

things progress in the war to the point that huge snow fortresses are built, and what was once a friendly game became much more heated and threatened to turn the friends on both sides into real enemies.

near the end of the movie, the dog is trying to climb into the fortress of his owner, and the tunnel he has to climb through collapses on him.

the two sides come together to dig the dog out, but by the time they get to him, it is too late and the dog has sufficated.

the dog had to die to stop the war. that is the only time i have ever cried at a movie, with the closest being during The Lion King when Simba tries to wake Mufasa up, realises he is dead, and then crawls under his father's paw.

that was probably the most emotionally intense moment in a disney movie to that point.

Up is third, but a close one.

overall, when you are talking about what makes a man really cry, it boils down to the death of a loved one, the loss of a beloved animal and if you are a closeted homosexual...the loss of your favourite spandex wearing athelete.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who teared up at Up.

The Wilson scene in Cast Away got me too. Tom Hanks yelling "I'm sorry!" as he has to make a choice between staying with his boat and going after his friend is heart-wrenching. That his friend was an inanimate object was rendered immaterial by the power of Hanks' performance.

When I was younger, the scene where John Lithgow slaps Harry in Harry and the Hendersons would get me.

Rocky III, when Mickey died

Posted By: Guest#6532 (Guest)  on July 08, 2010 at 02:06 AM

Jesse's song from Toy Story 2. "Dad... you want to have a catch?" from Field of Dreams. The ending of the Iron Giant ("Supermaaaaaaan"). The march on Fort Wagner at the climax of Glory. Heck, Mac saying goodbye to Blaine in Predator is enough to put a lump in my throat.

And, as great as the opening 10 minutes of Up are, the part that really got to me is when Carl finds the "Thanks for the adventure. Now go have one of your own" inscription at the end of Elle's Adventure Book.

Also, excellent call by whoever cited "The Dog Who Stopped the War." I haven't seen that movie in ages, but loved it as a kid.

When Optimus Prime dies in the animated Transformers: The Movie.

Has anyone seen the movie They? It was about a guy who's daughter dies and he starts to believe she's still wandering around. He ends up at this school/house run by Vanessa Redgrave that is haunted by the ghosts of dead children. The scene at the end where he is reunited with the spirit of his daughter still makes me crack. The X-Files ripped off this scene years later when they explained what happened to Mulder's sister.

There haven't been too many movies that I've cried during (as an adult anyway), but I could do a whole list of TV episodes that were unexpected tearjerkers (M*A*S*H* and Futurama come to mind.)

You should do a list of the best kids' summer movies. I'm talkin' Camp Nowhere, Heavyweights, Blank Check, etc.

Posted By: Cactus (Guest)  on July 08, 2010 at 03:09 AM

i totally agree with this list and the choice of the number one. I remember seeing Up and choking up at the first 10 mins, a very well made movie too btw

also, Click was surprisingly a tearjerker to me as well. And Seven Pounds. The sight of Sandler and Smith dying crushes me every time

Posted By: Svenki (Guest)  on July 08, 2010 at 03:52 AM

You missed the biggest unexpected tearjerker of them all... a movie that will, and has brought the mightiest down to a gooey, drippy mess:
'Best of the Best'

Marley and me for sure. I know of tough football players that have bawled in that movie. And no wonder. Losing a dog is something we can all relate to

psh. real men don't cry!

Posted By: Guest#1092 (Guest) on July 07, 2010 at 11:12 PM

Obviously you're working the "spend life sad and alone" angle.

Real men do cry and aren't afraid to admit it.

If you've found love and are married there's no way you don't cry at the opening of Up. If you've ever had a toy as a child or have children now, there's no way you don't tear up for Toy Story 3.

The other one that always gets me is the end of the Color Purple when Celie is reunited with her children.

I remember this movie I think they even tried to remake it in the US(or they renamed it can't remember which, feel like I saw two different versions of it) but I do remember the tunnel collapsing on the dog. That moment was something else back then.

bridge to teribithia was a childrens book, I read it when I was young, so the move wasn't shocking to me, but up, I was bawling like a baby, when you are married and watch those first ten minutes, its crazy. Best ten minutes ever you are correct!

The scene in Click that got me was where he chews out his Dad and realizes it is the last time he ever sees him and keeps rewinding and screaming at himself.

While you know both *could* be emotional going in, I don't think I expected The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile to effect me like they did. Shawshank for its triumph of the human spirit when Andy escapes and lets the rain wash away his past, but that could also easily illicit a cheer instead of happy weeping. Now, Green Mile on the other hand, boy that's a doozy. When the man sent to die is comforting the ones around him I just lose it. And then as Hanks stands there belaying the execution order as long as possible...

The episode of Futurama about Fry's dog, "Jurassic Bark". Cry every time I watch it. Just pretend they didn't retcon it in the first movie.

Crash: The scene where the dad gives the little girl her magic cape and where the guy shot her. Everyone in the theatre made that little noise you make with your throat before you cry.
Man on fire:The opening where he ask walken if he thinks god will forgive them for what they have done. unless you are a soldier or something you'll never know that feeling. if you are you hate that knowledge. When he tries to commit suicide but cant. finally getting the little girl back and then him being drove off.
Toy Story 2: When jessie sings her story messed me up.
And the most random tear jerker for me was hero. yes the jet li movie. When he emperor gets a free pass from jet li so he can unite china. Then jet li accepting his fate. the sheer honor of it. then as far as just plain honor getting me:Braveheart, Black Hawk Down, Tears of the sun and four brothers. I wish it would rain indeed...

No Lord of the Rings? Up is a good pick as that movie in the first five to ten minutes are very sobering when you are expecting to see a fun kids movie and of course the kids you are watching it with don't get it. Rudy is also another good choice and should have been higher on the list as I think a lot of folks can identify with Rudy and the problems he had to face. Star Trek II I'm sorry really never got any sort of emotion from me.

"The winner is Click. Sold as a comedy, but actually ends up a crazy tearjerker"

Couldnt agree more. this list has no validity because Click isnt on it. I got pretty choked up during Click, and I DEFINITELY didnt see that coming...as it was billed as a comedy

One that always gets me is Godfather II. Two scenes. The first one is when Fredo Corleone is killed. Fredo was not a malicious guy. He was naive and trusted the wrong people, but never intentionally intended to hurt his family. Fredo knew it was coming but didn't put up a fight. On the fishing boat when you hear the gunshot after he says the line "...pray for us sinners." Just chokes me up every time.

The other scene is the very very last one. After the last "flashback" when Michael tells the family that he is joining the army. Cuts to Michael sitting on a bench by the water staring into space. You realize here that this was not how Michael's life was supposed to turn out. He was supposed to be the one who went straight, but instead was sucked into this life of organized crime. How he became a man worse than his father. Very tragic ending in my opinion.

Old Yeller, To Kill a Mockingbird, Shawshank Redemption, Return of the Jedi :( The music did it for me when Yoda died.

No mention of "An American Tale"? I was very young when this movie was made but when Feivel(sp?) got lost from parents doing the storm, I cried so much. I still remember the feeling of dread watching that scene.

Holy shit! I remember watching this movie at school like 20 years ago! I dont remember the dog, but I do remember the giant snow forts. Wow.. just wow!

Only two times in your life a man is allowed to cry one is birth of your children the other is if you get kicked square in the nuts and only then it has to be one manly tear

I first saw Death of The Incredible Hulk when I was seven and I thought it was sad when the Hulk came crashing down, reverted back into David Banner, and his girlfriend runs up saying, "Don't! Don't die! We can be free!"

And David looks at her and says "Yasmine...I am free." He dies and then The Lonely Man theme hits. That was sad as heck to me back then.

I'm the last guy on earth to scream "no ......? Epic fail" on lists, but seriously, Click belongs right up there, maybe even at #1. I expect Up to bring up certain emotions, but the movie where David Hasselhoff gets repeatedly farted in the face? No way! So I was majorly surprised that this brought tears to my eyes.

You know what movie was an "unexpected tearjerker" for me back in the day (the first time I saw it)? Independence Day.

I know that sounds completely absurd... something about the Randy Quaid's sacrifice at the end of the movie always got me. "In the words of my generation.... UP YOURS!"

Especially considering Fry thought he did the right thing not bringing him to the future thinking he lived a good reminder of his life when really the dog spent the rest of his life in sadness waiting for Fry to come back.

Shit now I'm crying!!!

Enjoyed the list. An unexpted one for me was 8 Seconds. I knew what happened to the main character, but it's the after that right before the end that just tore me up... And Crash, the scene where the little girl ran out to give her dad the invisible cape and got to him right as the trigger was pulled??? Be still my beating heartbreak!!! but was a blank, whew...

Well, I think we should make sure that the topic is talking about is UNEXPECTED tear jerkers. Being honest, many of the movies on Mike's list (as well as many of the ones listed in the comments) were a least a little expected. Field of Dreams and Brian's Song, for example, both hit me like a ton of bricks - but they were kind of expected. The first time I saw Rudy, I wasn't expecting to be moved, but I was. I can get behind the Rocky 3 suggestion when Micky dies - but the series itself is about ups and downs and when Micky dies, it is sort of expected - just takes us by surprise that they'd do it to Mick. I think the key here is finding a comedy that just finds that one moment that shoots the viewer for a loop out of nowhere. Something like Grumpier Old Men when Grandpa Gustaphson (also played by Burgess Meredith - Micky in the Rocky series) passes at the lake. Funny People is also a good one as is most of the Pixar animated comedies.

In any case, there are tons of examples. Especially because of the fact that every movie hits ever person a different way.

Not a film, but an episode of Futurama.

Fry's dog waiting outside the pizza shop for his owner, keenly scanning the sidewalk for what seems to be years. The music accompanying this final scene. Finally, the dog - tired and hunched over in the same spot - rests his head on the sidewalk and drops his eyes. Credits.

Even writing that, moistens the eyes. Of all the cartoons, I never expected Futurama to pull that one on me.
